Are Our Future In today’s world, one of the most serious problems facing established volunteer organizations is how to ensure their continuation. In the past, there existed many successful volunteer organizations that were heavily involved in community outreach. Organizations have historically flourished with large membership numbers that always included several influential community leaders. Today, many of these organizations have all but disappeared and for those that have remained, membership consists of retirees, regularly losing membership to death and to advancing age. St. Vincent de Paul also faces similar issues, since a large number of our membership is made up of retirees. However, we are moving proactively to resolve this dilemma. Understanding that there are huge generational differences between the young and the old, our efforts have concentrated in welcoming groups of young volunteers. These volunteers can come together to perform the same acts of charity that older members do, but the young are doing these services their way and in the company of others their same age. The poor and marginalized are receiving the assistance that they need, and the young are satisfied in what they are accomplishing and are doing it in an atmosphere of friendship and companionship. Youth sometimes don’t relate to poverty or don’t realize the seriousness of some situations. Issues that are important to older volunteers often seem

trivial to the younger volunteers. However, when young volunteers see serious issues that they may have trivialized in the past, they are forced to realize the gravity of the situation that hopefully will change their perspective on life. A young, single mother, with a young child, who is the same age as the volunteers, who has no money or place to stay, would strongly relate to a young volunteer. Such a tragic situation may begin to put life issues into perspective, for what is important in life. These are important lessons that cannot be taught in a classroom and hopefully, will create an ideology that will remain with them the rest of their lives. We have two all-youth Conferences: The Annunciation Catholic School Vibrant Vinnies and the St. Rose/Good Shepherd/ St. Philip Benizi Jr. Vincentians. We also have grammar school and high school students and college and university students who all volunteer at St. Vincent de Paul. They feed, help with the clinic, work in our urban garden and collect donations. These volunteers come from diverse groups and sources, and we are grateful to each of them. It is with certainty that I can predict that most of these young volunteers will return as continuing members and leaders of future St. Vincent de Paul organizations. They are taking part in “On-The-Job” training program and their skills will continue to be needed in the future. For in Christ’s own words “The poor will always be with you.”

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is an international non-profit organization dedicated to serving the poor and providing others with the opportunity to serve. The Phoenix Diocesan Council has been assisting central and northern Arizona families since 1946. Programs include services for the homeless, medical and dental care for the working poor, charity dining rooms, thrift stores, a transitional housing shelter and general assistance for individuals in need.

WITH DR. MAURICE LEE
Dr. Lee, who last year was one of our thousands of volunteers, says he is looking forward to making our clinic an even greater resource for the community.
The other part of it, is that I want to make sure that we try to fill any needs that aren’t met in the community. Right now, for example, wound care is what is most needed so I want us to excel in that. In the future, the needs might change so we need to change too. Dr. Maurice Lee, the new medical director of our clinic, sat down with us to tell us about himself and his plans for the future of St. Vincent de Paul’s clinic. He has a long history of volunteerism and vast experience working at community clinics.
You have a very interesting story. Could you share a little bit about your experience in Ecuador and how it shaped you as a doctor? It was probably one of the most rewarding times in terms of personal growth. It taught me that I have to take a step back and let things happen and that I don’t necessarily need to have all the answers. I was there, in a small town in Ecuador’s coastal rainforest area, for a little more than two years. I had finished my undergraduate degree and had worked for a little bit, when I decided to join the Peace Corps as a health volunteer. It was when I came back that I went to med school. I thought it had been hard when I left here to go there, but I had no idea leaving there to come back would be so much harder. We focused on helping people work to the top of their abilities, as opposed to telling them what they can and can’t do. We really encouraged them to figure out how high they can soar. That was really the biggest thing that happened there. Really, it was doing whatever the town needed. We built a basketball court and painted murals. I worked with all the population, including kids, teens and adults. It was a fun time: the food was great, the people were great and even the weather was great. What’s your vision for the future of this clinic? Well, I’m lucky because the clinic has been run really well and I’m just kind of stepping in and crossing t’s and dotting i’s. I don’t really have to do any sweeping changes or anything like that. Just in the tradition of this clinic, I want to make sure that the care we’re giving is up to the standards that you would get in any office so people who come here are not getting any less care because they come to a free clinic.

During 2014, our medical clinic provided almost 8,000 appointments and more than $4.2 million worth of medical and dental care.

LESSONS LEARNED
Advice for a Younger Me: If Only I had Known… After almost 30 years of working at Ozanam Manor, St. Vincent de Paul’s 49-bed bridge shelter, I struggle to put to words how much I have learned and experienced here. I started as a case manager and eventually became the director of the program. Looking back, I sometimes wonder what words of wisdom I would give myself on the day before I started the job. Here are some of them. 1. “Don’t be afraid”
Or even better, be afraid, but do it in a way that suits you and have faith that things will turn out OK.
2. “Believe in yourself”
As a new case manager at Ozanam Manor, I had not yet had much experience with homeless people. When the director asked me to lead the alcohol recovery group, I didn’t feel that I could lead or inspire any group, much less people from such a different background from mine. To this day, I even have trouble with any sort of social events that involve lots of noise and people around with whom I need to speak. My anxiety made me worry that our residents, struggling with alcoholism, would resent the fact that I was there and hadn’t walked in their shoes and that they would end up rejecting me. I imagined how other people who had lots of experience with alcoholics, or were simply more comfortable with strangers, would handle this much better than I could. But in the end, I learned that I can make a difference and that everyday I was helping the group overcome addiction.

3. “Listen Well”
In the years since I started, I have learned to be myself and listen well. When other people are encouraged to talk, they are far more inspired than they would be listening to me. Listening is fulfilling to me if I can relate what others say to an idea that is meaningful to me. For example, with the alcohol recovery group, I was fascinated by the idea of a self in which a person had lost confidence in himself being assisted by a higher power and the support of a group. I think my rapt attention inspired the members of the group to share their experiences and wisdom they had acquired and be supported in their recovery.
4. “Things are always better than they seem”
The negative things that I imagine happening at Ozanam Manor while lying in bed in the middle of the night usually bear no resemblance to what actually happens the next day. Fears are fears, not reality.

Continuing the Legacy Young Vincentians change lives one food box at a time While most teenagers use Saturday mornings to catch up on much-needed sleep, two Mesa high school students spend it getting food boxes ready and going on home visits to ensure neighbors in need have food on the table and other basic necessities. Felicia Kerns, a sophomore at Mountain View High School, and her cousin Gillian Vaugh, a freshman at Xavier College Preparatory, have been volunteering at one of St. Vincent de Paul’s community pantries for years. The girls, along with their mothers, are in charge of home visits one Saturday every month.

ASU STUDENTS IN ACTION
On a Saturday morning in February, more than 50 ASU students came to our downtown Phoenix campus to work on the garden, serve lunch to more than 200 guests, and completed other cleaning and organizing tasks. A month later, another 50 ASU students returned to our downtown Phoenix campus, as well as our Mesa dining room, to participate in the largest student-run service project of the year, Devils in Disguise. The students helped with lunch service, trimmed bushes, gardened and helped set up our new barbershop. It was wonderful to see them in action!

More than three years ago, St. Vincent de Paul board member and ASU professor, Dr. Phil Mizzi had a dream: making and serving fresh and delicious pizza to guests in our dining room. When he presented a plan to install pizza ovens at the industrial kitchen in our main campus, no one knew if it would ever come to fruition. Now, not only is the kitchen equipped with the ovens thanks to generous donors, but Pizza Friday has extended from each third Friday of the month to every single one. The pizzas are not only a treat, but they are also meant to demonstrate to kids that healthful eating can be fun and delicious. The thin crust pizzas are made with multigrain dough and topped with fresh vegetables. These healthful pizzas are served during our Family Evening Meal on the first and third Fridays on the month, and at our Phoenix Dining Room on the Second and fourth Fridays.
Food Services Manager Jerry Castro said the guests couldn’t be happier with the pizzas. “Phil Mizzi is a wonderful example of a volunteer wanting to do more for our guests,” he said. “Healthy, fresh and delicious pizzas are a reality, and I am able to witness the love professor Mizzi and all our volunteers have as they make the pizzas.”

It is also a fun activity for our volunteers. Laurel Gracey and five other ASU students spent hours perfecting pizzas during a Friday in late March. The students volunteered as part of a leadership class.
“This has been a great experience and everyone is so nice,” Laurel said, “but most importantly, it’s actually really fun to make pizzas.”

Faith Olson goes to night school three times a week and works full-time as the Job Opportunities coordinator at our Ministry to the Homeless program every day. She has been able to find just the right balance to apply the knowledge she learns at school to her work at SVdP and vice versa.
Some of the guests’ needs include first passing the GED test. For them, Faith and Peter, the GED tutor, develop a personal strategy and offer resources such as online courses and prep books.
Intern Spotlight: Faith Olson Faith Olson does not get to relax once it’s 4:30 p.m. and she leaves her full-time position as Job Opportunities coordinator at St. Vincent de Paul’s Ministry to the Homeless program. In fact, for her, the day is far from over.
This isn’t the first time Faith has worked with the homeless, as she had experience through her church. Twice a week, Faith goes through an orientation with the people who sign up for the job program to explain what the goals are: to help them with resume creation, prepare for interviews and to get employment. To that end, Faith also attends networking events to find potential job opportunities for guests and she tours some shelters in the Valley to meet the people who might benefit from the program.
“The focus is, what can we do to help you pass this test?” she said. “We don’t want to focus on what they already know.” Olivia is one of the guests who decided to work toward taking the GED test before looking for a job. When she first came to St. Vincent de Paul, Faith said, Olivia felt like she would never pass the test. Now, a few months later, she has passed the English and science portions of the test and is preparing for social studies and math.
The success she has had in this position wouldn’t have been possible without the knowledge she gets from school, Faith said. “Every two years I have to go get an MRI test and it always shows the same thing: disc number five is completely wrecked. I get therapy, but every day I feel like I have less strength in my legs. My daughter even has to help me get in the shower. But here I am! Some mornings, when I’m dizzy from all the medicine I take, I think ‘God give me strength, because I need to go volunteer.’ And he does.”
“The best part of my job? Well, I once saw one of my kids, Roberto, read for the first time. He was 3 at the time and he came up to me and started saying ‘Miss Cynthia, I’m reading!’ His mom started crying, you know? Volunteers keep saying to me: ‘I can’t believe how smart these kids are.’ And they truly are.”

Every day at St. Vincent de Paul we feed, clothe, house and heal those in need. This exchange, however, is not one-sided and we end up getting as much, if not more, than we give. The Society of We’re All in This Together looks to show just that. Differences make us who we are, but it’s our common goal to better this world that unites us. These are just a few of the stories of the people behind our organization: staff, volunteers and guests. Because many of our guests are pictured here, we decided to omit names to respect their privacy.
“I started this year on the right foot! The doctor at the clinic just told me I’ve been approved to get my medicine for high-blood pressure and even gave me some information on affordable insurance. What I had to pay to get insurance through my job was so much that I had to opt out, but I know I need to get it soon, so hopefully this will help. I am so thankful that I promised myself I would come back as soon as I get better and volunteer.”
“Well, it all started with me coming to get meals here, and then I thought ‘I should become a volunteer!’ But now, I’m going to be doing it less, because guess what? I got a fulltime job! I’m going to be doing security over in Cave Creek. Who would have thought? And now look at me, I’m doing very well.”
“March 21st will mark three years of me being sober. I was in prison for most of that time, but even there you can get the stuff I was using, but I stayed away from it. I feel proud because I owe it all to God. He is the one who guided me. I’m just grateful. A lot of people don’t see that kind of grace in their lives and I pray for them to find it. God put me here for a reason and he’s got something planned for me in the future. I just need to figure out what it is.”

14-YEAR-OLD PLANS AND HOLDS FUNDRAISER FOR SVdP
John Conroy planned, promoted and held a fundraiser for St. Vincent de Paul’s transitional shelter, Ozanam Manor, after reading about the program online.
John Conroy may only be in eighth grade, but he is already impacting lives. On a Saturday morning in March, the 14-year-old St. Francis Xavier student held a fundraiser for St. Vincent de Paul’s 49-bed transitional shelter, Ozanam Manor, at Funugyz, a sports grill in Peoria. He did the planning and promoting all on his own. His original lofty goal was to raise $300. He ended up raising almost $500. “It was an amazing experience,” he said. “This is probably the biggest project I’ve ever done.” Part of the school’s curriculum, the Arrupe Project encourages students to raise money for worthy causes. The eighth graders start by completing chores or other work for friends and family and earning $10. The school matches that amount through grants and the students then use those funds to organize fundraisers.

The first step for John was figuring out which charity he would choose. A previous volunteer, he knew right away he wanted to donate to St. Vincent de Paul. John Conroy planned, promoted and held a fundraiser for St. Vincent de Paul’s transitional shelter, Ozanam Manor, after reading about the program online.
“I was going through the different programs that the organization has, when I found Ozanam Manor,” he said. “It really spoke to me because I thought it was just great what they do for older homeless people.” The shelter offers housing to an especially vulnerable group of adults: those older than 50 and the disabled. Once he decided on Ozanam Manor, John learned which items the shelter needs more: pillows, toiletries and bedding. He will use all the money to buy the items and deliver them personally. There, he will get a tour of the shelter and meet some of the residents.
To get more people involved, John decided to put together two gift baskets to give away during the fundraiser.
Mike Bell, the director of Ozanam Manor, said he was really impressed with John’s generosity. “I’m very pleased and a little amazed that John found us,” he said. “Our guests typically have no income when they come to us and they will really appreciate the toiletries and nice bedding.” Just after noon on the day of the event, John said he was a little nervous because he did not know how many people would show up. He didn’t need to be worried. His dad’s friend agreed to host the event at his restaurant, and to donate a percentage of the proceeds to his fundraiser. Sitting nearby, his parents watched John in action as he visited with patrons and asked if they wanted a ticket for one of his two raffles of gift baskets full of goodies. Cate, his mom, said it was quite an experience, not just for John, but for the whole family. “John grew so much out of this process,” she said. “He learned so much from it and he couldn’t be happier to be helping St. Vincent de Paul. We couldn’t be prouder.” After the successful event, John can’t wait to bring his donation to Ozanam Manor. “The fundraiser was mind blowing,” he said. “But the part I’m most excited about is actually delivering them. Hopefully they will help.” They definitely will.

One of the greatest privileges of serving in Arizona is being able to work with a generous community of people who care about the well-being of our state. Our friends not only host food drives and send volunteers, they donate generously to support our work. Another Great Year for Friends of the Poor Walk Duncan Family Farms held its annual Friends of the Poor Walk, raising over $25,000 for SVdP this year. Started in 2011, this event has become a family tradition for its employees. Everyone participates, from the farm owners to young participants who come to the walk with their piggy banks filled to the brim. We are truly touched year after year, by their generous support and how much the event has grown!
Global Village Champions Celebrate Annual Christmas in January at Dining Room Early in the year, Global Village Champions Foundation Inc. hosted the very special event, Christmas in January, at our Phoenix dining room. The co-founders of the organization, Yank Barry and his wife Yvette spoke at the event, which was emceed by NFL Hall of Fame nominee Nick Lowery. Global Village Champions donated 150,000 meals to St. Vincent de Paul, making it possible for us to continue feeding our neighbors in need. Thank you to all the speakers and organizers!
Insight Foundation Makes Learning Possible Insight Foundation recently made a generous donation of 15 laptops to our Dream Center. Thanks to them, our Dream Center children enjoy volunteer-taught computer lessons each week and develop much-needed skills in technology.

Tour Inspires Toyota Financial Services to Give Generous Donation After an exciting tour of our main campus and some volunteer activities, the Toyota Financial Services team decided to donate $2,500 to help fund the Family Evening Meal and Dream Center programs. Thank you to Toyota for being such a generous partner!
High School Students Decide to Give Back Students from Bourgade High School gave their time to help us put together 800 hygiene packs for our Ministries program. It’s wonderful to see young people get excited about volunteering and seeing them impact their communities!
Sundt Supports St. Vincent de Paul The Sundt corporation team took a tour of our main campus in February and gave us a gift of $3,000 to help our dining rooms continue to provide almost 4,200 meals daily. Our work would not be possible without the generosity of corporations like Sundt.
Let It Roll Gives SVdP Kids Chance to Enjoy Bowling In April, Let it Roll hosted a night of fun for our Dream Center kids. With partnerships such as this, SVdP can give our children the chance to experience many new things. The Let it Roll team also volunteered in late March during Family Evening Meal and is organizing a month-long fundraiser to support us.

The Society of a Thousand Thanks Valley Youth Theatre Treats Dream Center Kids and Their Families to a Night of Fun On a Friday evening in February, Valley Youth Theatre had a special treat in store for almost 100 of our kids from the Dream Center and their families: a private performance of The Emperor’s New Clothes at absolutely no charge. VYT also hosted a clothing drive and donated a portion of the ticket proceeds to SVdP. We look forward to continuing this wonderful partnership!

Celebrity Fight Night Teams Up with SVdP to Help People in Need Summers in Phoenix can be grueling for all of us, but particularly to those who don’t have easy access to water. In fact, lack of drinking water can cause life-threatening illnesses for people who are homeless or don’t have safe shelter. Thanks to a donation by Celebrity Fight Night, and its founder, Jimmy Walker, SVdP now has a “water truck” delivering life-saving water, sunscreen, hats and other essential supplies to people living on the street.

Quicken Loans Employees Volunteer at SVdP In March, around 20 Quicken Loans employees volunteered in the kitchen at our main campus. It was a great start to a new relationship between SVdP and Quicken Loans as employees decided to volunteer on a regular basis and look for other ways to support our organization!
