JUNE 2022

celebrities

everyone’s talking about...

BRITNEY BARES ALL

Recently freed Britney Spears has sparked concern from fans after posting a naked photograph of herself on Instagram – twice.

The ‘Hit Me Baby One More Time’ singer could have been forgiven for doing the original post - marking her recent 40th birthday and new-found freedom the first time 2 weeks ago but the bizarre second time post (on May 28th) appeared way too much for fans

“Girllllll put some clothes on and have some morals for yourself! Didn’t want to scroll just now and see one of my favourite singers naked!” said one fan.

Although Britney was covering her modesty with heart emojis, which could have been bigger to cover more in our opinion (!) her behaviour has had fans questioning whether the star is actually OK.

In November last year the 13-year conservatorship that had been hanging over the troubled singer was finally lifted by the LA Courts. Her father, Jamie Spears, was no longer able controls her assets, her fortune, her medication and ultimately her decision making. An embittered Britney said her family and those involved in the conservatorship “should all be in jail” following the ruling.

Another said: “Not AGAIN!! Enough already with the naked pics.”

A third joked: “Can we get a different set of pictures please. Just to switch it

“Honestly, it still blows my mind every day I wake up how my family and the conservatorship were able to do what they did to me, it was demoralising and degrading!”

Demoralising and degrading it may have been - but so is posting naked pics on the internet!

STYLES DONATES £1M TOUR PROCEEDS FOLLOWING TEXAS TRAGEDY

Singer Harry Styles (and concert promoters Live Nation) will be donating the proceeds from his ‘Love on Tour’ North America dates to the non-profit gun safety organisation, Everytown.

Harry, aged 28, has also added new dates to this tour which sold out in minutes. At least £1m will go to support the gun safety fund following the Texas tragedy, where 19 school children and two teachers were gunned down by an 18-year-old (as yet to be named) killer.

Talking to Instagram on Friday, the former One Direction singer said to his 45 million fans: “Along with all of you, I have been absolutely devastated by the recent string of mass shootings in America, culminating at Robb Elementary in Texas. On our North American Tour, we will be partnering with Everytown who work to end gun violence,

donating to support their efforts, and sharing their suggested action items. Love H.”

Harry captioned the post “End Gun Violence” and put a call to action to those that want to help Everytown and their movement by donating funds.

NO MORE DRAMA QUEEN!

The Queen has ordered her family “to all come together and put dramas aside” for her Platinum Jubilee Celebrations this June bank holiday weekend.

By this we know she is mainly referring to the family’s rift with her grandson Harry and wife Meghan following their Royal exit, turbulent Oprah Winfrey interview and subsequent tell-all book.

Harry, Meghan and their children; Archie (3) and Lillibet (1) will be flying over to the UK to take part in the Thanksgiving Service at St Paul’s Cathedral on Friday 3rd June and maybe the Trooping the Colour on Thursday, although this has yet to be confirmed by the palace. The Royal Family have announced that Harry and Meghan will not stand on the Buckingham Palace Royal balcony with senior members of the Royal family after the Sunday ceremony – the most prized photo opportunity moment. Although, neither will Prince Andrew following his

tumultuous year in the press and the stripping down of his royal work and military titles following his ‘almost court case’ with Virginia Giuffre – an alleged victim in the Epstein scandal.

The one good thing to come out of all this is Queen Elizabeth will finally meet her great-granddaughter, Lillibet.

The youngest of Meghan and Harry’s children, the little girl was named after her, after all! Hopefully the Lizzies get on and enjoy their time together as Harry and Meghan will very rarely be seen at UK events such as these – having built a new home for themselves in LA.

CALVIN HARRIS & VICK HOPE ENGAGED

DJ Calvin Harris popped the question to long term girlfriend and Radio 1 presenter Vick Hope in the romantic setting of his Ibiza farm last month.

Harris, 38, who has been linked to a string of beautiful singers over the years including Taylor Swift and Rita Ora, was 25 when he first asked Vick out.

She said no at the time but has since admitted she was “19 and

FINAL FAREWELLS FROM DEBORAH

‘You, Me and The Big C’ Podcaster, Deborah James, who was diagnosed with terminal bowel cancer in 2016 has said her final farewell to fans as she enters her last weeks of palative care.

In an emotional TV interview via video link with BBC Breakfast, Deborah revealed she is not having any more treatment as she nears the end of her terminal cancer battle. BBC presenter Sally James couldn’t continue as she fought back the tears as the interview progressed.

Deborah has now raised over £900,000 for Cancer Research through her Go Fund Me page and charity Bowel Babe.

Speaking to her fans, the mum-of-two said she was “gutted to not have more life.”

Her voice trembling, she said: “I’m scared about what might happen but it is what it is, I’ve had five years to prepare but you never really prepare - you always want more. My health hasn’t been good and I could see it coming and it’s just knowing that it’s going to happen.”

Deborah, who has shared every step of her experience with stage 4 bowel cancer through her podcast, was also awarded a damehood by The Queen last month.

shallow then” and that Harris has now “turned into an Adonis!”

Vick, 32, and Harris have been papped out at Radio 1’s Big Weekend as well as enjoying the Chelsea Flower Show in London.

The couple haven’t indicated yet when they will tie the knot although speculation is rife it will be later this year.

RECIPE

VEGAN M’ HANNCHA

Moroccan M’ Hanncha is a wonderful way to wrap up gorgeous smashed vegetables and grains to make a beautiful looking dinner, while also adding amazing texture – crunchy on the outside, soft in the middle. Healthy and tasty, are you ready to be part of the vegan revolution?

INGREDIENTS

100 g pearl barley

1 butternut squash, (1.2kg)

2 red onions

2 cloves of garlic

2 red peppers

1 big bunch of fresh coriander, (60g) olive oil

½ teaspoon dried red chilli flakes

1 heaped teaspoon fennel seeds

1 heaped teaspoon cumin seeds

1 heaped teaspoon ground coriander

100 g mixed dates and dried apricots

½ a lemon

10 sheets of filo pastry

1 tablespoon shelled pistachios icing sugar, for dusting

METHOD

Cook the pearl barley then drain. Wash the squash, then carefully cut

it in half lengthways and remove the seeds. Peel the onions and garlic and deseed the peppers. Chop the squash, onions and peppers into 1cm dice. Finely chop the garlic with the coriander stalks (reserving the leaves).

Place it all in a pan on a medium-low heat with 2 tablespoons of oil, the chilli flakes, fennel and cumin seeds, and the ground coriander. Sweat with a lid on for 25 to 30 minutes, or until soft but not coloured, stirring occasionally.

Destone the dates and finely chop the flesh with the apricots and coriander leaves. Fold into the veg pan with the drained pearl barley, squeeze in the lemon juice, season to perfection, then leave to cool.

Preheat the oven to 180ºC/350ºF/gas 4.

Lay out two clean damp tea towels on a large work surface, side-by-side, with the longest edges facing you. Working quickly but taking care, lay out 3 sheets of filo side-by-side with the short edges towards you, overlapping each one by 2.5cm and brushing between the overlaps with water.

Lightly brush the sheets with oil, place 3 filo sheets directly on top, then repeat with another 3 sheets. Save the remaining sheet for patching up.

As evenly as possible, spoon your filling in a line along the long edge closest to you. Brush the opposite long edge with a little oil.

Working slowly and carefully, use the tea towels to help you roll it up and away from you into a giant cigar, keeping it on the damp tea towel at all times. Roll it into a large pinwheel, working quickly but handling it gently to avoid too many cracks. Gently slide it onto a large greased baking tray, and patch up any gaps, if needed. Brush all over with more oil and bake for 45 to 50 minutes, or until gorgeous, crisp and golden.

Ten minutes before the end, smash and sprinkle over the pistachios and an extra pinch of each of the spices, if you like.

Serve with a super-light dusting of icing sugar. Delicious with all the usual trimmings or served with a spiced tomato sauce.

WINE MATCH

If you are having a vegetable-based menu the best option is to go with wines that are a bit more mature. With vegetarian food the flavours are more subtle so you have to be a bit more careful with your wine decisions. The obvious difference between vegetable and meat cooking is the absence of rare protein and animal fat which both tame the tannins of full-bodied reds.

Therefore, the best option is to go for a Bordeaux, Burgundy, Tuscany or a Napa Valley wine (although pricier) that go well with a dish that is classic and vegetable based like this one.

MOVIE REVIEW ALBUM REVIEW BOOK REVIEW

JURASSIC WORLD DOMINION

On June 10th, the latest and final instalment of the ‘Jurassic Park’ franchise is being released in cinemas.

The story centres around two generations of dinosaurs uniting for the first time in what is billed as “the epic conclusion” to the Jurassic themed films.

Actor Chris Pratt is back as the film’s lead and sees Oscar winner Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum and Sam Neill (the 1992 original film’s stars) reprise their roles as the scientists and enthusiasts involved in the intrepid plan to bring dinosaurs back into the modern worldwhere humans must try and survive the threat they pose.

‘Dominion’ takes place 4 years after the last film ‘Forgotten Kingdom’. Isla Nublar has all but been destroyed and dinosaurs live and hunt alongside humans. This fragile balance reshapes the future and determines whether human beings are fit enough to survive in a world where they have to co-exist with deadly predators like the T-Rex.

The film is written and directed by the original ‘Jurassic’ architect Colin Trevorrow and produced by Frank Marshall and Patrick Cowley.

It’s a long one at 2 hours and 23 minutes so bring a cushion! It marks the sixth film in the franchise that was started 30 years ago by Steven Spielberg. If it is going to be the last outing (as promised) we really hope it will be a good one. Early indicators are it will be - unlike its predecessor spinoffs that achieved terrible reviews with less than 50% on Rotten Tomatoes for 4 out of the 5 films.

‘Jurassic World’ in 2015 was the only one to make a splash at the box office. Let’s hope they go out with a bang with this one.

POST MALONE 12 CARAT TOOTHACHE

Post Malone’s fourth studio album ‘12 Carat Toothache’ is dropping on Friday 3rd June. Steeped in controversy, Malone’s manager, Dre London, claimed Malone’s label was stopping him from releasing the album, which was previously earmarked for 2020.

“Our sync & energy always on an Insane level,” London wrote alongside a photo of them. “Album has been done!! We Ready!! But it seems Republic Records and Universal Music isn’t. Posty fans no more need to press me anymore we did our part! Now it’s time for the label to get the business right before we drop BIG Album! Hit them up! We been ready like u are! It’s Time.”

Dre previously teased the release of the album in April 2021, writing: “This that smile while on FaceTime with Post Malone agreeing that the world deserves 2 Posty projects out this year!”

London shared a video of Malone strumming on an acoustic guitar, saying: “I know waiting for that Post Malone musical fix! Stand by!! We planning to do a few special things during 2021.”

During a 2019 performance in Wyoming, Malone revealed to his audience that his new album was finished, further fuelling the speculation that there had been a huge fallout with the label.

“I have some pretty f*ckin’ awesome news, and the reason my voice is kinda fucked is because I was in the studio for the last three days and we just finished up the new album, and I think it’s gonna be pretty goddamn out of sight,” he said.

Fast forward three years and the much-awaited album is finally being revealed. It is supposed to be worth the wait though... 12 tracks of impassioned music by the New York singer will enthral fans and even nonMalone fans.

GILT

A luxurious and compelling new novel from Jamie Brenner, the critically acclaimed author of ‘Blush’, about a famous family dynasty and the hidden past that could topple it all.

One perfect diamond is all it takes to divide a family. The Pavlin family built an empire on love. As the first jewellers to sell diamond rings exclusively for proposals, they started a tradition that has defined engagements ever since.

But when an ill-fated publicity stunt pits the three Pavlin sisters against one another for a famous family jewel, their bond is broken. No ordinary diamond ring, the Electric Rose splinters the sisters, leaving one unlucky in love, one escaping to the shores of Cape Cod, and the other, ultimately, dead.

Now, over a decade later, Gemma Maybrook is still reconciling the reality of her mother’s death. Left orphaned and cast out by her family after the tragic accident, Gemma is ready to reclaim what should have been hers: the Electric Rose. And, as a budding jewellery designer in her own right, Gemma isn’t just planning on recovering her mother’s lost memento, she’s coming back for everything.

From Manhattan’s tony Fifth Avenue to the vibrant sands of Provincetown, Gilt follows the Pavlin women as they are forced to confront the mistakes of the past if they have any hope of finding love and happiness of their own.

A great novel by a budding writer this will undoubtedly captivate readers like the previous books that have made it onto the New York Times Bestseller List.

Zendaya Zendaya

Zendaya Zendaya

2022 has definitely been Zendaya’s year. The actress has been catapulted to superstar status following her hit HBO series ‘Euphoria.’

The show - about a group of high school students struggling with love and drugs - was recently signed for a third season, smashing the ratings on Netflix for Seasons 1 and 2... becoming one of the most watched and talked about TV shows in the world.

Zendaya plays the character of drug addicted, Rua Bennett, impossibly well. The scenes she has to do must be incredibly tough; regularly appearing out of it, her Bambi eyes rolling to the back of her head. In a large majority of the series, she is in a semi-state of unconsciousness too, goodness knows how an actor portrays this so believingly. And an actor of her age as well. Zendaya is only 25.

It was not surprising that she scooped a Primetime Emmy Award for ‘Outstanding Lead Actress’ in 2020 for her role as Rue. She was 24 at the time, making her the youngest ever recipient of this coveted award.

Zendaya landed the role in ‘Euphoria’ in 2019 following her impressive performances in the theatrical cinematic hit of 2017, ‘The Greatest Showman’ starring alongside Hugh Jackman and Zak Effron and the ever popular ‘Spider-Man’ Marvel franchise; of which she has starred in all three films to date, from 20172021.

LIFE IMMITATING ART

It was here she met her boyfriend, the talented Brit actor Tom Holland, who plays Spider-Man and her love interest in the films. Rumours of romance were quick to circle around Hollywood following the pair’s blatant on-screen chemistry and all the off-screen time the duo spent together.

Although for almost 5 years, Zendaya and Holland denied anything was going on. They are both “extremely private characters” and did not want to “doom the relationship” were cited as reasons for keeping their relationship on the QT.

The news of their official ‘coupling’ didn’t come until February of this year when they were pictured holding hands at the premiere of Holland’s new film ‘Unchartered’. It was Hollywood’s worst kept secret! According to sources close to the stars, the romance had been going on for near enough 4 years.

Now officially out in the open, Holland regularly gushes about his girlfriend. In a recent Instagram post, Holland put a series of red hearts under Zendaya’s picture and commented “First.”

He has also spoken out about how Zendaya supported him on the set of ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home.’ Apparently, he was so nervous to meet his predecessor Spidey’s Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, who star alongside them in the film, that Zendaya had to calm his nerves.

Of their romance, Zendaya said in an interview last year: “The equal sentiment is just that when you really love and care about somebody, some moments or things, you wish were your own… I think loving someone is a sacred thing and a special thing and something that you want to deal with and go through and experience and enjoy amongst the two people that love each other.”

According to one of the ‘Spider-Man producers, Amy Pascal, the romance blossomed despite her warning them both to not get involved. In a recent interview with the New York Times, Pascal revealed: “I took Tom and Zendaya to one side separately when we first cast them and gave them a lecture. “Don’t go there – just don’t. Or try not to,” were her words of wisdom.

Pascal feels partly to blame for them having to keep the relationship a secret for so long. Although it was a pretty rubbish secret Amy so don’t lose any sleep over it!

The news comes as Zendaya and Holland have just SURREYROCKS

purchased a £4m house in Richmond, South West London together, a sure sign that their romance is serious. Zendaya already owns a mansion in Hollywood but is spending more time in the UK to be around her boyfriend’s friends and family. This new property surely means they have been dating for more than a few months, as they would have us believe!

FASHION ICON

Hollywood definitely sat up and took notice of the petit model turned actress and as is with these things, it wasn’t long before the fashion and beauty world followed suit.

Zendaya has just started working with Valentino on their Maison Valentino Campaign, wearing a series of gorgeous barely-there dresses, beachy hair and gladiators... if anyone can pull it off, she can. She has been dressed by the who’s who of the fashion industry including Balmain, Vivienne Westwood and Gucci. She is also the face of cosmetic giant, Lancome.

Zendaya is a normal girl at heart though... admitting to doing her own make-up for the Oscars ceremony this year. The boho chic, Californian born girl is setting herself apart from all the over-groomed actresses these days. Although equally she can get away with smart power suits and couture gowns.

Versatile, current, talented, beautiful and kind – Zendaya has got a lot of attributes, as well as being a huge supporter of the Black Lives Matter movement, filling up most of her Instagram squares. We just need her and Holland to tie the knot and make beautiful babies together – life would be complete!

If you like hiking then head north to Norway. Three bizarre rock formations can be found near one another which are unsurpassed and sure to take your breath away. Trolltunga (The Trolls Tongue) is the most spectacular rock formation in Norway. Situated 700 metres above Ringedalsvatnet Lake and resembling what you would imagine a Troll’s tongue to look apparently. Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock) at a height of 600 metres is a mountain formed like a huge flat monolith with sheer squared edges. It and the iconic and bizarre Kjeragbolten at 1000 metres tower over the Lysefjord. Kjeragbolten is as strange a rock you will ever see – a 5-cubic-metre glacial deposit wedged in the mountain's crevasse.

China’s Tianmenshan National Park is likely the one place where you can get all the heart-stopping attractions in one place. Tianmen Mountain in the southern province of Hunan has just opened its third glass walkway ‘The Walk of Faith’. Stretching 60 metres, with a width of 1.6 metres, it hugs the mountain over 1500 metres above sea level overlooking Tongtian Avenue, known as ‘Coiling Dragon Cliff’.

Add to that there is the 7 km, 30 minute joyride of the world’s longest cable car, as steep as 37 degrees over sheer cliffs to one of the mountain peaks. Suffer 20 minutes in an open chairlift for two over densely forested peaks or take the sedate and correctly named ‘99 Bends’ after which 99 steps or the ‘Stairway to Heaven’ await and you arrive at Tianmen Cave or ‘Heaven’s Door’ - the highest hole of its sort in the world. And you still haven’t even reached the Tianmen Temple at the top. Phew!

Laferrari Packs

Laferrari Packs A Punch

Boxer Canelo Alvarez’s recent LaFerrari purchase for £2 million is one of the best splurges the Mexican has made, according to car experts.

Although he splashed the cash for this luxury car purchase – it’s worth it’s weight in gold. As only 499 were made, in 10 years time this collectable car is estimated to be worth in excess of £4m.

Alvarez is definitely enjoying showing off his new LaFerrari, posting pictures on Instagram to the joy of his (albeit) envious fans. But what does it feel like drive his fans asked? Alvarez was too busy in the ring to respond. But luckily we enlisted the help of Iain Dempsey to review the power of the boxer’s shiny, new red toy.

IT’S A KNOCKOUT

Explaining just how fast LaFerrari can go is not as easy as you may think. I could tell you it will hit 100km/h from rest in under 3sec and won’t stop accelerating until it’s somewhere the far side of 350km/h and doubtless you’d be very impressed. I could tell you that once you add the power of its 6.3-litre V12 engine to that of its electric motor it produces 950bhp, yet weighs about the same as a small family hatchback. But these are still just numbers.

So let me try to put it in less dry terms. It has more power than Fernando Alonso’s Formula Ferrari, and I mean a lot more. It is the only road car I’ve known whose acceleration from rest is genuinely frightening – even to those standing outside the car. As for the inside, when you put your foot hard down for the first time, what happens next is so alien that the instinct of survival will make your foot lift off the pedal, whether you want it to or not. It will create equally involuntary actions from your passenger who will gasp in air only so that he or she can scream it out again, while his or her right foot stamps frantically at a brake pedal that isn’t there. Whatever your concept of fast may be, whether it is defined by BMW M3, Porsche 911 or any old common-or-garden normal Ferrari, this one will take it and gleefully burn it before your eyes.

The LaFerrari is not just the fastest Ferrari ever built, it is the fastest car made by mainstream manufacturer ever to wear a numberplate. Some will point to the Bugatti Veyron and note it has even more power and takes even less time to reach 100km/h, but the former advantage is miniscule and obliterated by the over half tonne of extra weight it carries, and the latter simply a

FEATURES

function of the Bugatti’s four-wheel drive traction. In any real world scenario, that Bugatti would not see which way this Ferrari went.

LaFerrari’s stands at the centre of a new unholy trinity of hybrid hypercars, flanked by the McLaren P1 and Porsche 918. All use electrical power in much the same way as a Toyota Prius to boost a petrol engine, but to rather greater effect. And of them all it is the Ferrari – the most powerful, lightest and most expensive of the lot – that claims all the saloon bar bragging rights to itself.

So when you approach it, an insect-like study in scarlet from some dystopian future dumped unceremoniously outside the Ferrari gates, you naturally expect some pre-flight ceremony, or at least explanation. But there is none. No one steps forward to hand you a G-suit, neck brace, helmet or weaponsgrade sedatives. The door scissors open and as you peer inside, it looks quite a lot like any other Ferrari cabin.

Except it isn’t. There’s no elegant way in, so you sort of

tumble, grasping various bits of carbon fibre bodywork to control your descent. Once in you try to adjust the seat but it doesn’t move. This is because you don’t actually sit in a seat, but merely a padded section of the car’s structure. You don’t move to meet the car, it moves to meet you with not only the steering but the entire pedal box telescoping in or out to meet your hands and feet. It’s so comfortable you wonder why more cars aren’t made this way.

The engine blasts into life. It’s not a particularly attractive sound at idle, but it oozes aggression. You can summon up quite a number of different displays on the TFT screen in front of you, all of which will make you feel like a fighter pilot. I choose one with a vast central rev-counter and a red-line at 9250rpm.

It’s easier than you’d think to trickle out into the traffic, largely because your very presence turns you in a red carpet royal among other road users. In Italy where I got to test drive the car, everyone wants to get out of your way.

But driving it fast in public is an exercise in frustration and futility. Even on quiet roads it is so quick it eats the distance between one car and the next in barely discernible time. So it feels like you’re always in traffic. And while overtaking is the work of a blink of the eye, you can never get into a rhythm nor even start to understand what this car will really do. With a car like this it’s not just your licence that’s at risk, it’s your liberty.

Happily Ferrari has a test track, somewhere the LaFerrari is able to express itself fully. And I’d like to say my hour alone at its wheel on the circuit was the most frightening experience I’ve ever had in a car, because that would seem an appropriate thing to say. Except it wasn’t. Forget the power, forget the stats; forget the fact that there are places here it’ll do 280km/h where no other Ferrari I’ve driven will do more than 230km/h. Ferrari’s yet greater achievement is to take unprecedented road car performance and package it in such a way that anyone with just a bit of time, experience and understanding can exploit.

And when you do, it’ll take you to a place no other road car can reach. Any car that can involve you so much you start to feel part of the machine is a rare and exceptional device. The LaFerrari does better than this: it makes the machine feel like part of you. So much so that when they hang out the flag that tells you they’d like their car back, and you slink back to the pits, out of the red insect and into a normal road car, it is the everyday, ho-hum tin box that feels like the alien creature, not the LaFerrari.

Ferrari only built 499 LaFerraris and charged £1million plus local taxes for each one at the time. Ferrari offered the cars only to its most loyal customers and everyone sold without its new owner so much as sitting in it. They bet that Ferrari would be true to its word and produce a driving experience unlike any other the world had seen to this point. If anything, Ferrari has overdelivered with LaFerrari.

LETS FACE

Every appointment at HARE & BONE starts with a consultation. If you are a new client or have been with us for years, we always begin with a consultation. We create space for you to discuss your concerns, to talk about what you would like from your hair and highlight any issues you have. This could include texture, scalp worries and how much time you have to commit to styling your hair at home. Do you spend an hour washing, drying and styling your hair everyday? Or do you wash and go? Either way is fine with us but by being honest, it will help us achieve a style that works for you. As well as your concerns, we want to know your lifestyle. Do you go to the gym every morning, then straight to work? Do you have three children to get to school each day? Are you out most nights? Does your workplace have a hair policy?

Have you recently separated? Or going through the menopause? Have you changed your diet? Quit your job? You might believe that these personal stories don’t play a part in your hair story, but as professionals, we recognise when there are changes happening in the lives of our clients.

As well as asking a lot of questions during the consultation, we will look at your hair texture and face shape. The condition of your hair can inform us on the backstory. How often it’s been coloured, how often it is washed, what type of home haircare products are used and how ofter heated appliances are used - without heat

NIKU

We were already huge fans of Niku before we got to try their tantalising new European inspired menu. In case you have been living under a rock... Niku is well known for being one of the hottest nightspots in Surrey, serving an eclectic mix of cocktails with great DJ nights every Friday and Saturday till 1am as well as Bottomless Brunches from 12-4pm on weekends.

Having arrived on a Thursday evening, Niku was already getting going with several large party bookings... the vibe was fun in their beautifully decorated green leaf and flower adorned lounge bar and restaurant.

On arrival we got to sample their extensive cocktail menu and on recommendation of our helpful and charming waitress, we went for the ‘Cup of Tea’, which was a delicious cocktail of peach

gin, vodka, apple juice, lime and gomme syrup beautifully served in a quintessentially British china tea set... a lovely touch. There were also other wonderfully named, creative signature cocktails such as ‘Mango Bango,’ ‘Apple Tree’ and ‘The Suitcases.’ Be prepared for a cocktail experience like no other! Visually as well as taste wise.

FOOD GLORIOUS FOOD

After salivating over their gorgeous Instagram posts, we were well and truly excited to try Niku’s food menu. It was extremely wide and varied with so many tasty offerings including Burgers, Steaks, Pasta, Salads, Sharing Platters and Chef’s Specials.

For Starter we went for the ‘BBQ Pork Belly’ which was drizzled in Apple Sauce and Chilli, the meat was so tender it literally melted in the mouth. The second starter of ‘King Prawns, in Chilli, Butter & Parsley’ did not disappoint either. There were 5 very large succulent king

prawns which were cooked to perfection and two slices of warm homemade bread – the perfect accompaniment for mopping up any leftover garlic butter.

For Mains, we opted for the ‘Lobster Mac & Cheese’ which was cooked in a rich, cheesey sauce with generous chunks of fresh lobster, topped with even more melted cheese... we were literally in food heaven.

Our second Main of ‘Lamb Cutlets’ was from the Chef’s Specials section of the menu. Three large grilled lamb cutlets served on a bed of creamy mash with tenderstem broccoli,

gravy and flaked almonds. The mean was tender, succulent and plentiful (not always the case with cutlets, we were sold!) The mash was very creamy and the broccoli cooked perfectly al dente – a really tasty dish that comes highly recommended.

As the portion sizes are so generous at Niku, we were well and truly filling up by Dessert. However, we had to try the new ‘Biscotti Cheesecake’. Layered with a Biscotti biscuit base, cream cheese filling, caramel and finished with a whole Biscotti Biscuit. We were so glad we fit it in as it was simply devine. The perfect ending to our perfect meal.

FEELING HAPPY

Niku offers Happy Hour on weekdays for the whole evening and on weekends from 5-7pm in the Restaurant and 8-9pm in the Lounge. They also have a beautiful outdoor garden area and offer private hire for parties. Bottomless Brunches run from 12-4pm on a Saturday and Sunday too for only £35 per person. For 2 hours guests can enjoy a selection of Cocktails, Prosecco and a Meal with the best tunes.

THE GIN KITCHEN

Beautiful Bottomless Brunch at the heart of the Surrey Hills.

Walking along a country lane in the depths of the Surrey Hills’ countryside, you don’t expect to stumble upon an artisan distillery and cocktail bar, but that’s exactly what happened when we discovered the Gin Kitchen near Dorking. Arriving at this buzzing rural setting was like being transported to another dimension, far removed from the usual chain cocktail bar. We were immediately struck by the characterful heritage farm buildings that have been transformed into the very coolest setting for a distillery and bar, with the farmyard reimagined for alfresco drinks, adorned with festoon lights, fire pits and fabulous gin bottles.

We quickly relaxed, with a talented DJ playing chilled tunes reminiscent of lazy days at a hip beach bar for Ibiza sundowners. Looking around, the rustic 170 year-old Calf Shed Bar captured our imaginations. It forms the backdrop for some of the Gin Kitchen experiences, such as the Gin Tasting said to be second to none, combined with a tour of the renowned on-site artisan distillery, the creative Cocktail Masterclass and even the Absinthe Tasting Experience, all of which can be paired with the acclaimed tapas menu.

GASTRONOMY REVIEW

the Gin Kitchen prides themselves on their five-star service and we were impressed by our host’s knowledgeable recommendations of which gin would perfectly pair with each delicious dish to come.

Alongside the charming Calf Shed, we discovered the long, stylish Orangery Bar, named after its budding citrus trees, serving up inventive cocktails on weekends and temptingly tasty accompanying dishes. It is also home to the Bottomless Gin Brunch and we simply couldn’t resist indulging!

Shown to our table, we were warmly greeted with G&Ts whilst our friendly host introduced the qualities of the individual gins handcrafted in the next door distillery building, as well as the botanicals sourced from around the globe. It was clear that

When the food was presented, it was obvious that it is not just the gin that’s exquisite. The flavours of the dishes enticed with each bite – from the smokiness of the borlotti beans baked with a perfectly poached egg in paprika, to the heavenly scent of the fresh croissants and waffles served with succulent strawberry jam being two of our particular favourites. Yet, naturally, it was the gins themselves that stole the show. Each stood out in their own right, with the full Gin Kitchen collection enjoyed across the brunch. Sweet-toothed guests will fall for the Blushing Monkey Pink Gin (fruity and floral), the silky opulence of The Ginger Cat tempted us with its glorious tonka bean base and zestful Iranian orange flower notes, and the Insane Ostrich made for the perfect partner for those excellent aforementioned smoky beans.

By the end of the brunch we had tried all five gins, especially

loving that when we discovered a particular favourite we could simply ask for more. Once the experience drew to a close, we couldn’t resist extending our stay by taking a table in the characterful courtyard for Pornstar Martinis in the sunshine (the best we’ve ever tasted!), whilst already planning our next visit to the Gin Kitchen.

Served on weekends from 11-1pm, the Bottomless Brunch is currently priced at £55 per person. One of many experiences offered by the Gin Kitchen ideal for gin-fanatics, luxury-lovers or simply those looking for a special Surrey Hills’ day out. They also do Golden Ticket Experience Vouchers for gifting. We can’t wait for our next visit.

THE FRUIT MACHINE COBHAM

Our favourite go-to greengrocers for the finest fruit and vegetables in Surrey turned one last month (Happy Birthday FMC!) and we were happy to celebrate with them and do this birthday photoshoot and accompanying write-up of all their wonderful produce.

FEELING FRUITY - THE STRASBERRY & MORE

Not only do the wonderful team at The Fruit Machine get up at 2am to bring you the finest fruit and veg direct from the London Markets everyday but they bring fruit and veg we didn’t even know existed!

All hail ‘The Strasberry’ - a fusion of strawberries and raspberries and they taste devine. A great talking point if you are ever hosting a dinner party too. We were also lucky to be able to try the Beekers Berries white ‘Limoncello Strawberry’ too. A sharper taste than a normal strawberry but delicious all the same.

VEGETABLES GALORE

Rare vegetable wise we have also been fortunate enough to sample a ‘Caulishoot’ ‘Globe Artichokes’ and the ‘Barlotti Bean’ also known as the cranberry bean. And then there’s the finest Dragon Fruit, Passion Fruit and the biggest and best Cherries we’ve ever tasted.

Having been regular customers of The Fruit Machine we can wholeheartedly swear by the quality of their produce. Without a doubt the crème de la crème of greengrocers. This is backed up by the fact a few local Surrey celebs and members of the Chelsea squad have been seen doing their shops here.

GOING THE EXTRA MILE

ESCAPISM & SANCTUARY

When it all gets too much, we all like to have a place of escapism and sanctuary. Apart from going to the spa, mine is going to Scotland. When my husband told me 3 years ago that he was buying some land in Scotland, I thought he had taken leave of his senses! Little did I know what a great decision that would turn out to be. From escaping the crowds, to the breath-taking scenery of the mountains to the silvery blue loch and the verdant greens of nature. Not forgetting the fresh lobsters and oysters, and of course the friendly locals. Notice I didn’t include haggis I’m afraid.

Rockhill Farm Estate extends over 130 acres of verdant undulating ground which forms a headland on the southern shore of Loch Awe from which there are stunning views of the loch, several of its islands and the Ben Cruachan massif. It is accessed by over a half mile stretch of sweeping private track. It is a completely private and beautifully secluded location.

Commercial activities at Rockhill have included livestock rearing and equestrian activities, the latter notably in 1967 with the establishment of a renowned stud, specialising in British Hanoverians. Now we have beautiful highland cows roaming the land which help keep the grass at a manageable level. It is quite a sight watching them make their way down to the loch every evening to take a drink before retiring for the night. There are also deer, rabbits, sheep and geese to name but a few. We have even spotted an eagle roaming above the land. It’s a good job my husband studied Zoology for his first degree and has an interest in sustainability and ecology so that we can be committed

to enhance the wilding of the noncommercial areas of the estate.

The buildings of Rockhill comprised of a main house, a barn, a stone cottage and various other outbuildings. The buildings were quite dilapidated and were not fit for living. Knowing that this was going to be an immense project, it was imperative to us to keep the original buildings and restore them to their former glory. We also wanted to build several other loch cabins in order to share this spectacular place with others.

Ordering furniture and soft furnishing remotely, and during a pandemic, proved somewhat tricky. Although this was rather challenging, I’m pleased with how everything has turned out so far. We have gone for contemporary Scandi–style designs in the loch cabins and kept more of a traditional style in the stone cottage with paisley prints and dark wood features. I wanted everything to have a homely feel and it certainly has

that. We have plans for the original farmhouse, the barn and the original stables... so watch this space!

Conveniently, en-route from Glasgow airport, you have to pass Loch Fyne Oyster Bar which serves some of the most delicious freshly caught seafood you have ever tasted. Around 30 minutes from the estate you also have Inveraray, which is a small town which houses the historical George Pub and of course Inveraray Castle. Fans of Netflix would have seen this on the series of ‘A Very British Scandal’. The George Pub is our favourite place to go for some home cooked pub grub. My favourite is the beef cheeks which just melt off the bone. Samphire restaurant is famous for its fish but we are yet to try it. That’s for next time.

One of the loch cabins is now available to rent out. So if stunning views, your own private jetty and an island to explore sounds up your street – then please do check it out. Follow us on Instagram @ rockhillfarmscotland.

Just watch out for the Loch Ness Monster!

JUNE Tarot Reading

Let’s find out what june will bring for you!

Oracle Card

Oracle cards are used during tarot readings to emphasise and help interpret the tarot cards differently. They can give a different perspective to the reader, helping them explain what your tarot cards are trying to tell you. Your oracle card for this month is ‘Energy’. This card wants you to think about the energy that you have been using lately and the energy you would like to attract. Where have you been putting your energy, and is it worth it? Make sure to put your energy into things that you are excited about, even if it may seem like something small to someone else, if it makes you happy, go for it! Now is the time to pursue what you are being called to do. Put out the energy that you want back to you and use your newfound momentum to achieve great things. Now onto the tarot reading.

Queen of Swords

Your main card for this month is the Queen of Swords. This card is all about your independent side coming forward and guiding you towards making different decisions for yourself. You are using your unbiased judgement to create a better life and aren’t letting your own ego stand in your way. One of the hardest things we can do as humans is accept where we are going wrong and what makes us scared, but the Queen of Pentacles is showing you truthfully coming into your own. You are setting clear boundaries for yourself and are showing the world what you really stand for. Direct communication with the people closest to you will help you find your way.

Justice

The Justice card is pretty clear in its meaning, it is all about getting justice for yourself and the people who you think need it most. This card shows you believing in fairness and wanting everyone to be treated equally. The truth is important and you want others to see you for who you really are. You are aware of the effect you have on people and don’t have time for drama or jealousy. The Queen of Swords and Justice together show you stepping away from people who are no longer serving your highest good. You are becoming your own person and creating your own opinions based upon what you believe is right.

The High Priestess

Your final card for June is The High Priestess. This card is about using your intuition and letting it guide you. You have the knowledge you need already inside of you and can suss out quite soon if something just isn’t working for you. These three cards together tell a story of someone who isn’t afraid to go after what they want and has the ability to use their instinct when in uncomfortable situations. June is going to be all about holding your own and being independent. You know what you deserve and are ready to get out there and find it.
