Dear Friends and Neighbors, April brings the vibrant arrival of spring to our community, offering a season filled with renewal, celebration, and opportunities to connect with nature and one another. As flowers bloom and warmer days return, residents are encouraged to enjoy Surfside’s beautiful outdoor spaces while taking part in meaningful community activities. Let’s never forget April Fools’ Day on April 1, bringing smiles and playful moments to kick off the season. Don’t be fooled – Surfside is hotter than ever…
April highlights milestones that inspire us all, from Ponce de León exploring Florida to Apollo 13’s journey and Apple’s founding, reminding Surfside residents to celebrate discovery, creativity, and the achievements that shape our community, and above all, progress and possibility.
A New Chapter 2026 for Surfside April also marks a time of new beginnings for the Town of Surfside. With the start of a new term, we welcome our newly seated Town Commission and the fresh perspectives they bring to our community. New leadership offers an opportunity to build upon past accomplishments while working together toward a shared vision for the future of Surfside. Please vote in the April 7 mayoral runoff election at Town Hall.
We welcome our elected officials with open arms and look forward to a collaborative and productive term focused on transparency, service, and continued progress for our residents, businesses, and visitors. Together, we look forward to moving Surfside forward and strengthening the vibrant community we proudly call home.
Environmental & Cultural Highlights One of the month’s most important observances is Earth Day on April 22. This global celebration reminds us of the importance of protecting our environment and strengthening our commitment to sustainability. Throughout April, residents can participate in gardening, beach cleanups, and volunteer efforts to help preserve the beauty of our coastal community. April also brings several cultural and seasonal observances. Families will celebrate Easter and Passover, a time of reflection, renewal, and togetherness.
Literature and the arts take center stage during National Poetry Month, celebrating creativity and the power of words, as in these 2 Surfside-inspired rhymes:

Residents are encouraged to explore poetry, attend cultural events, or simply enjoy the inspiration the arts bring to daily life. Music lovers can also celebrate Jazz Appreciation Month (JAM), honoring jazz legends such as Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Miles Davis, and Ron Carter, and their lasting impact on music worldwide.
April is a wonderful time in Surfside. Get involved, plant something new, attend local events, and soak in the beauty of our vibrant community and coastline.

To add to our summer excitement, the 2026 FIFA World Cup is headed to Miami. This will bring tourists, athletes, famous faces, and of course lots of traffic our way. Please expect traffic in our community and hightened security.Finally, we shined the spotlight on one of our finest officers: Officer Bobby Gabriel. IN MEMORIAM, MARIA SIERRA
It is with deep sadness that the Town of Surfside shares the passing of Maria Sierra, Police Dispatcher.
Maria joined the Town of Surfside Police Department as a communications operator (dispatcher) on April 22, 2024. During her time with the Town, she served the community with dedication, professionalism and care. She will be deeply missed by her colleagues and all who had the privilege of working alongside her.
In honor of her service, all Town flags were flown at half-staff.
Please keep Maria’s family, friends and colleagues in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

SURFSIDE MAYORAL RUNOFF ELECTION IS APRIL 7
A runoff election will be held to determine the next mayor of the Town of Surfside following the Tuesday March 17 municipal election.

The runoff is scheduled for Tuesday, April 7, 2026, with polls open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Voting will take place in the Commission Chambers at Town Hall, 9293 Harding Ave.
ALERT! HURRICANE SEASON BEGINS JUNE 1
As hurricane season approaches, the Town of Surfside Police Department urges residents to prepare early. Planning ahead helps protect families, reduce risks, and ensure a faster response if severe weather impacts the community.
Residents should review and update family hurricane plans, know their evacuation zone and routes, inspect storm shutters, secure outdoor furniture, restock emergency supplies including medications, water, batteries, and important documents, and sign up for local emergency alerts.
The Surfside Police Department has begun seasonal preparations, including reviewing emergency response and evacuation plans, coordinating with Miami-Dade County emergency management, inspecting emergency equipment and vehicles, conducting staff training, and evaluating communication systems to ensure reliable public information.
Early preparation keeps Surfside safe and allows first responders to focus on critical needs during a storm. Residents are encouraged to begin preparations now rather than wait for a forecast. RECYCLING: WHY IT MATTERS AND HOW IT HELPS
Recycling is the process of collecting and processing materials that would otherwise be thrown away as trash and turning them into new products. It is an important part of protecting the environment and conserving natural resources.
When we recycle materials such as paper, plastic, glass, and metal, we reduce the need to extract raw materials from the Earth. For example, recycling paper helps save trees, and recycling aluminum cans reduces the need for mining new aluminum. This conserves energy and reduces pollution caused by manufacturing and transportation.

TOWN ADOPTS OFFICIAL PAINT COLOR PALETTE
The Town Commission has recently amended the Town Code to adopt an official exterior paint color palette for properties throughout the municipality. The new provision is intended to promote a consistent and harmonious visual character while preserving the Town’s unique aesthetic identity.
Under the updated code, property owners planning to repaint the exterior of a house are not required to obtain a building permit. However, prior to beginning work, owners must apply for and receive a Zoning Approval Letter confirming that the proposed paint color complies with the adopted color swatch palette.
The application allows the Town Planner to review the selected color for consistency with the approved palette and ensure compliance with community design standards. This process helps maintain an attractive and coordinated streetscape across the neighborhood.
Questions regarding the application process or palette options may be directed to the Planning Department.
The Town appreciates residents’ cooperation in supporting this initiative to preserve and enhance the community’s overall appearance.

SURFSIDE PREPARES FOR WORLD CUP CROWDS, INCREASED TRAFFIC THIS SUMMER
June and July will bring the energy and excitement of the FIFA World Cup to Hard Rock Stadium. Numerous events throughout the Miami area will celebrate this highly anticipated occasion, drawing visitors from around the world.
While this is an exciting time for the region and will provide increased revenue for local hotels and restaurants, a significant influx of visitors is also expected. As a result, traffic on already busy streets will likely increase during these two months.
The Surfside Police Department is working closely with neighboring law enforcement and partner agencies to help ensure this period runs as smoothly and safely as possible. Authorities are coordinating resources, adjusting staffing and implementing traffic management strategies to minimize disruptions to the community.
Officials said they look forward to the world-class event and appreciate residents’ patience and cooperation as efforts continue to keep Surfside safe and moving efficiently throughout the tournament.
FROM EXPLORER TO DECORATED OFFICER: SURFSIDE RECOGNIZES OFFICER BOBBY GABRIEL
The Surfside Police Department honors Officer Bobby Gabriel, a dedicated member of the team whose service with the department began in 2007 as a Police Explorer while still in high school.
He later served as a police dispatcher before becoming a sworn officer in 2013. During his career, Officer Gabriel has served in the Criminal Investigations Unit and worked with the State Attorney’s Office on complex money laundering cases. He currently serves part time with the State Attorney’s Office investigating human trafficking.
Officer Gabriel has received the department’s Officer of the Year award twice, along with multiple Officer of the Month recognitions. From Police Explorer to a decorated officer conducting state level investigations, his career reflects a strong commitment to service and the Surfside community.

COMMUNITY RELATIONS BOARD (CRB) HOSTS RESOURCE FAIR
The Community Relations Board held a Resource Fair on March 1 at the Community Center, bringing together residents and a diverse group of nonprofit organizations and service providers from Surfside and throughout Miami-Dade County. Participating organizations and businesses included Safe Cycling Florida, Bullets 4 Life, Kresy Pizza, the Alzheimer’s Association, Brain Injury Florida, Organ Donation representatives, and the American Red Cross.
A highlight of the event was the partnership with Safe Cycling Florida, which provided free, expertly fitted helmets for children and adults. Dozens of residents received properly sized helmets for bicycles, scooters, and other micro-mobility devices, reinforcing the Town’s ongoing commitment to safety and injury prevention. Bullets 4 Life also hosted a meaningful hands-on activity where participants created one-of-a-kind bracelets using donated bullets that had been repurposed as symbols of transformation and positive change.
MFF BY MOONLIGHT SERIES UNDERWAY
On Feb. 22, the Resort Tax Board partnered with the Miami Film Festival (MFF) to launch the first beachside screening of the season as part of the MFF By Moonlight series, featuring the film “Nonnas.” The event drew a capacity crowd as residents and visitors filled every available seat at 93rd Street Beach to enjoy a memorable movie night under the stars. Guests also enjoyed complimentary cannolis, popcorn and iced tea.
Vice Mayor Tina Paul and Commissioner Gerardo Vildostegui attended alongside Miami Film Festival representatives, Tourism Director Frank Trigueros, and Resort Tax Board Vice Chair Judy Martinez. The successful kickoff set the tone for another season of community-centered cultural programming on Surfside’s shoreline.

CELEBRATE EARTH DAY
Surfside to Celebrate Earth Day with Plastic Fishing Festival and Community Resource Fair, hosted by the Resort Tax Board and Parks & Recreation.
The Town of Surfside invites residents and visitors to celebrate Earth Day with a morning of environmental action followed by a community resource fair on Sunday, April 19.
The day will begin with the Plastic Fishing Festival from 10 a.m. to noon at 93rd Street Beach, where participants will help remove plastic and other debris from the shoreline. The hands-on activity encourages families and community members to work together to protect Surfside’s coastal environment while learning about the impact of plastic pollution on marine life.
Following the beach cleanup, the celebration will continue with the Earth Day Resource Fair from noon to 2 p.m. at the Surfside Community Center. The event will feature environmental organizations, sustainability resources and a live musical performance by Orquesta de Cateura, an internationally recognized group that performs with instruments made from recycled materials.
The festival highlights Surfside’s commitment to sustainability, environmental education and community.
THIRD THURSDAY SERIES CONTINUES TRIP AROUND THE WORLD
The second Third Thursday event of the series, Cruising the Globe: A Night in the Mediterranean, transformed Town Hall into a lively celebration of Israel, Turkey, and Greece. The program featured a beautiful harp and violin performance that set an elegant tone, followed by an energetic Turkish belly dancing showcase that captivated the crowd. The night also included a special live set by acclaimed guitarist and singer Oneg Shemesh. Creatives enjoyed decorating custom pottery pieces from local business, PotterMe, adding their own Aegean-inspired flair. Attendees enjoyed complimentary wine, Greek lamb sliders, Turkish kibbeh, and baklava. Kosher offerings included pizza, hummus and falafel courtesy of Harding Avenue eatery Kresy Pizza. The final event of the series was on March 19 and featured “A Night in Asia.”

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: REGISTER NOW FOR BAYNANZA BISCAYNE BAY CLEANUPSTREET PARK
Registration is now open for the annual Baynanza Biscayne Bay Cleanup, Miami-Dade County’s signature volunteer effort to protect Biscayne Bay. Registration is open through Friday, April 3. Space is limited and participants are encouraged to register early.
Cleanup Day will take place Saturday, April 11, from 9 a.m. to noon at more than 30 sites across the county.
Launched in 1982 by Miami-Dade County with a small group of volunteers, Baynanza has grown into one of South Florida’s largest environmental initiatives. Thousands of volunteers now participate each year to remove trash and debris from the Biscayne Bay watershed.
Registered volunteers will receive a free commemorative T-shirt featuring this year’s student art contest winner. Community service hours are also available for students.

SURFSIDE YOUTH COUNCIL HOSTS NATIVE GARDENING WORKSHOP,
Residents gathered Sunday, March 8, for the Town of Surfside’s “Native Gardening 101” workshop at 92nd Street and Bay Drive, where community members learned how to care for and grow native Florida plants. Hosted by the Surfside Youth Council, the event brought residents together for a morning focused on sustainability and community engagement.
The free event featured tips from native plant expert Ivy Hernandez, who shared practical tips on supporting the growth of native species and incorporating them into home landscapes. Native plants play an important role in supporting local ecosystems, conserving water and attracting pollinators.
A plant giveaway began at 11 a.m., allowing attendees to take home native plants for their gardens. The event encouraged residents to embrace environmentally friendly landscaping practices while helping enhance Surfside’s natural environment.

18TH ANNUAL BEACH 5K DRAWS 220 RUNNERS AND WALKERS TO THE SHORE
The Town of Surfside welcomed an estimated 220 participants to the 18th Annual Beach 5K Run/Walk on Feb. 22, 2026. Runners and walkers of all ages gathered at 8 a.m. on the beach hard pack east of the Community Center, for the scenic oceanfront race. The course traveled south to 87th Terrace, looped north and finished northeast of the Community Center, offering participants clear skies and sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean.
Awards were presented to the top overall male and female finishers, top masters male and female ages 40 and older, and the top three finishers in each age group. The annual event once again brought together residents, families and fitness enthusiasts for a morning of community spirit, healthy activity and coastal camaraderie.
Sarah Wilson is a longtime Surfside resident, NASM Certified Personal Trainer, Certified Nutrition Coach, Women’s Coaching Specialist, and former Team USA duathlete.
