By the time you read this, we will be in 2013. On behalf of the Town Commission and employees of the Town of Surfside best wishes for a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year. Following is a report on my 2012 New Year’s Resolutions: 1. Continue to manage this community in an efficient and effective manner with full transparency encouraging citizen involvement. Please draw your own conclusion, however, we finished the year with more than $5 million in reserves in the General Fund and all the Enterprise Funds have robust reserves. Our Pension Plan is also well funded and does not create a burden on our taxpayers. 2. Complete the Water/Sewer/Storm Drainage project quickly and with minimal disruption. The Water/Sewer/Storm Drainage project is nearly complete and should be finished by mid-February 2013. Kudos to Public Works Director Bill Evans and Capital Improvements Project Manager Randy Stokes for their hard work. If you have any concerns call Randy at (954) 494-7497. 3. Expand programming in the Community Center with particular emphasis on cultural events and more activities for teens. There are nearly 90 on-going programs in the Community Center with more to come. With the resources provided by the Surf Club and the Chateau (if approved by the Town Commission on January 24, 2013), we will have $700,000 toward a second story or other Parks and Recreations capital projects. 4. Expand the Five Year Financial and Strategic Plan to ensure that we continue to build reserves in all funds. An updated version of the Five Year Financial and Strategic Plan is being prepared. Bottom line, Vice Mayor Karukin’s desire to have $5 million reserves in the General Fund has been met in less than three years and all other funds are healthy. 5. Implement the Downtown Vision Advisory Committee recommendations after full community and Town Commission discussion while making sure that the character of Surfside remains in its laid-back family state. Lots happening here. We have $650,000 available from the Surf Club and Chateau, projects to improve downtown. The new CVS has been completed. The facades of a number of stores including JGB Bank and soon Amtrust (in conjunction with the new signs) have created a new face to the entrance to downtown. A Business Improvement District study will soon begin and much more. Watch for news on a Starbucks next month. Downtown is on the move! 6. Ensure that the repaving by FDOT of the Collins and Harding corridors minimizes traffic impact. FDOT has completed the repaving on Collins and Harding Avenues. The new crosswalks have been installed and a few details remain. Thanks for your patience and tolerance for the significant traffic impacts. 7. Upgrade the hard pack, walking path, beach and dune maintenance. The maintenance of the hard pack, walking path, beach and dune was greatly increased. Now we have to meet the challenge of beach renourishment due to the significant impact of Hurricane Sandy. 8. Review modernization of our solid waste and recycling programs to

Residents will not want to miss the viewing of the completed “Tales of Surfside Turtles” that will be held at the Community Center on the weekend of January 12 and 13, 2013 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. All 18 painted sculpures can be seen in one place before they are placed throughout the Town. This public art event will decorate the Town for more than a year. The subject is the beloved loggerhead turtle - with a twist. Each Surfside Turtle has been painted in bright colors and exciting themes. The sculptures are 5feet high with a 4-foot flipper span. The event is sponsored by the Town of Surfside Tourist Board. The Harbour Grill Expands The Harbour Grill, has recently expanded and remodeled its dining area at 9415 Harding Avenue. Stop in to see the improvements.
Josh’s Deli in Bon Appetit Magazine
In a story on the emerging Miami food scene, Bon Appetit featured Josh Marcus of Josh’s Delicatessen, 9517 Harding Ave, and his “Jewban” sandwich, a cross between a pastrami on rye and a Cuban sandwich. ”...Josh’s, in Surfside, is a throwback to the Courtesy of Bon Appetit days when deli meats and fish were smoked and cured in-house. Even the bagels are made from scratch.”
School Art Auction Kicks Off Turtle Viewing The Ruth K. Board Bay Harbor K - 8 Center will have an Art Auction and Sale in conjunction with the opening of the Tales of Surfside Turtle viewing (above) on Friday, January 11th from 6:30 – 8:30 pm at the Surfside Community Center. Students will have their artwork displayed and for sale. Also, Ruthie, a turtle sculpture created by 32 students in grades 6-8 will be sold at a silent auction.
Downtown Carolers Ring in the Season
Third Thursdays Return to Downtown Surfside
They are back! The popular free music series returns to the Downtown Business District for four themed events sure to appeal to all musical tastes. Mark your calendars and plan to attend, starting with Latin Night on January 17. Third Thursdays are sponsored by the Downtown Business District and Surfside’s Tourism, Economic Development and Community Services Department.

Carolers from Ruth K. Broad Bay Harbor K-8 Center helped to jump start the holiday season in Surfside’s Business District. Following an annual tradition, the talented students joined with Santa in visiting downtown businesses and providing sounds of the season. Thanks to the Downtown Business District for coordinating the event.

Continued from Page 1 achieve a reasonable level of service in an efficient manner comparable to similar beachside communities. This item was deferred by the Town Commission. We will be bringing an ordinance in the near future to require all trash to be put out in containers and to limit the ability of landscapers to blow yard clippings into the new storm drainage system. 9. Watch the details like landscape maintenance, feral cat and dog issues, refinishing parking lots, new entry and parking locator signs for the community, code enforcement, community garden, keeping our technology up to date including electronic payment of utility and other bills and converting records to electronic access. Most of these items were completed or advanced greatly. How about our new website, what an improvement! 10. Work with the Town Attorney and the Town Commission to settle or win several contentious and expensive lawsuits. The Young Israel case was settled as were the John Davis cases. The funds generated by settling the Maranon property were used to support the FY 12/13 budget. We have worked very hard to provide reasonable resolution to many of the issues that have been contentious for years. 11. Developing Staff through training and mentoring. What a great Staff we have. Welcome to Finance Director Donald Nelson, Building Official Edward Rojas, Budget Officer Andria Mieri and Web and Special Projects Coordinator Linda Jain. These new employees join the Town of Surfside team with great experience and knowledge. 12. Work with the Planning and Zoning/Design Review Boards to improve the quality and impact of new construction. What an exciting year! The new Development Impact Committee has reviewed the Young Israel project, the Surfside Grand Beach Hotel, the Transacta Lanai hotel project, the Surf Club and the Chateau residences (formerly Best Western). The February edition of the Gazette will have more detail on these projects. 13. Lose 25 pounds by year’s end. Bummer, only lost eight pounds. Blame little Hector’s cucina, Dawn’s candy stash or just my weak self control. Hope to do better in 2013. 14. This is an add-on. Watch the Town Calendar for five public information meetings that are scheduled to discuss the undergrounding of our utilities. As always, thanks to you and the Town Commission for the opportunity to manage this very unique community.

Television Anchor Belkys Nerey Loves Surfside’s Neighborhoods
As the evening anchor of WSVN Channel 7 news, Emmy award winning journalist Belkys Nerey is one of the most recognizable South Florida television personalities. And away from the spotlights of the studio, she is a longtime resident and champion of Surfside’s small town charm and livable neighborhoods. Belkys was living in a nearby condominium when she discovered Surfside while bike riding through the area. She bought her first Surfside home in 1997 and later moved into another. “Surfside is a real town. It has everything you look for in a place to live,” she said. “The beach, the condos, a variety of people, the family-friendly neighborhoods ... there is something for everyone.” A native of Havana, Cuba, Belkys grew up in New York and then Hialeah, so she really is a home town girl. She has been a self-described “TV junkie” her whole life. She started her television career as a reporter for a South Florida cable station. She was a “one-man band” for more than two years, shooting her own video and editing her
own stories. Her energetic style and hard work earned her a job in New Haven, Connecticut as general assignment reporter for the ABC affiliate WTNH8. It wasn’t long before she was covering some of the market’s biggest stories, often beating the competition convincingly because she could speak Spanish. In 1994, she returned to Miami and joined Channel 7 and covered major stories as a general reporter. With her engaging personality and lighthearted interview style, she eventually was named the co-anchor of the station’s pop-culture driven program Deco Drive. It was in this position that Belkys popularity with audiences soared and led her to becoming the evening news co-anchor beside Craig Stevens. While her successful career has brought her fame, her home life has kept her grounded in Surfside, where she lives with her niece and nephew. “This is a place where the kids can ride their bikes to school and you know your neighbors,” she said. “Surfside is a wonderful place to live.”
New Photo Display at Community Center Visit the Community Center to enjoy a new photographic series exploring the personality of the ocean. Sea Shades is on display now and can be seen at www.redphoto.com. The minimal and graphic compositions of Sea Shades show the sea it’s own voice, uniquely expressed in each photograph. The visual effects were made in-camera using long exposures and/or camera movement. The photos are by Scott and Cristina Redinger-Libolt. Aside from fine art, the Surfside-based duo specializes in their
own brand of “Fashionable Lifestyle” photography for advertising. Since moving to Surfside in 2009, Scott and Cristina have shot advertising campaigns for major corporate clients and their work has appeared in Ocean Drive, Miami Magazine, Forbes and Conde Nast. They also exhibited photography at a show curated by Miami Independent Thinkers during Art Basel in 2011. “We love the beach lifestyle that Surfside offers and hope to meet more people in our community.”
Website Offers Emergency Alerts The new Surfside website has an important function - The Emergency Banner. It alerts residents to any emergencies, such as weather or police notices. Click on the text in the Emergency Banner (in red at the top of the home page) and a complete message will appear with all

Citizen’s Police Academy Celebrate Graduation The Town of Surfside Citizens Police Academy recently celebrated the graduation of their 11th class. Graduates completed a nine-week course that included subjects such as EMS/Fire Department, Criminal Investigations/Crime Scene, K-9 Demonstration, Marine Patrol Operations, Officer Survival/S.W.A.T, Firearms Simulator and gun range. Congratulations to the graduates!

Wrestler Puts a Headlock on Bullying
Surfside’s Winter Extravaganza took place on Sunday, December 2 at the Community Center. It was an afternoon of traditional holiday fun, including Santa, the dancing dreidel, music, arts and crafts, face painting and giveaways.
Professional wrestler Daniel Puder conducted a bullying prevention presentation entitled, “My Life My Power” for the students at Ruth K. Broad Bay Harbor K-8 Center. The program promotes anti-bullying and teaches self-empowerment of youth through goal setting, mentoring, character building and leadership.

France Recognizes WWII Veterans in Surfside The Town of Surfside Community Center was the site of a special ceremony in which France recognized 19 World War II veterans. The French Consulate awarded the insignia of “Knight in the National Order of the Legion of Honor” to the U.S. veterans who fought alongside France during the war. and civil merits in the service of France. It’s the highest distinction that can be awarded to a French citizen or foreigner. The Legion was founded in 1802 by Napoléon Bonaparte. Notable Americans who have received the award include: Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell, General Douglas MacArthur, the astronomer Simon Newcomb, Dwight D. Eisenhower and former Secretary of State Colin Powell.
Book Club to Discuss Number the Stars on January 23, 2013 The Surfside Book Club will be reading Number the Stars by Lois Lowry to start off the new year. Everyone is invited to meet with the Club at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, January 23 to discuss this historical novel that was awarded the Newbery Medal in 1990. The story centers around ten-year-old Annemarie Johansen, who lives in Copenhagen, Denmark during World War II. During the Nazi occupation of Denmark, she and her family risk their lives to rescue Annemarie’s best friend, Ellen Rosen, by pretending that Ellen is Annemarie’s older sister.
