MESSAGE FROM THE TOWN MANAGER

Dedicated Surfside Employees Lead to Great Local Government Surfside’s Town employees and elected officials took a moment out of their day to participate in the second annual City Hall Selfie Day on August 15. Along with thousands of other towns, cities, counties and other forms of local government, we gathered in front of our Town Hall for a “selfie.” While this was a fun event designed to increase civic pride and promote the importance of municipal services and leadership, it reinforced the value of our dedicated and experienced staff here in Surfside. The services rendered to the residents is at a very high level. The Public Works Department, Sanitation and Utilities Departments provide daily services while maintaining our infrastructure and working to improve and beautify the Town. Residents of all ages benefit from the many Parks & Recreation programs, the Aquatic Center and the Community Center. The Police Department protects our neighborhoods through proactive efforts and provides numerous community programs and initiatives to strengthen dialogue with citizens. Thanks also goes to our elected officials for the leadership, dedication and support they provide to the employees. Our dedicated staff focuses on excellent service every day, making Surfside a wonderful place to live, work and play. - Guillermo Olmedillo, Town Manager

Bollywood on the Beach!

Bollywood was in the air as residents and guests enjoyed the August 4 Indian-inspired beach party under giant tents at 93rd Street. The event included a free yoga class, music, Indian dancers, a drum circle, henna tattoos, healthy bites, oversized floaties and kids crafts.

JOIN THE SEPT. 1 FIRST FRIDAY FOR A TASTE OF THE MEDITERRANEAN Journey to the Mediterranean on September 1 at 4 pm for the final First Fridays beach picnic of the season at 93 Street and the beach. Enjoy live Middle Eastern music, belly dancers, interactive drum circle, Dead Sea exfoliating mud scrubs and Mediterranean bites. The event is a family-affair with loads of kid-friendly activities. Art aficionados also can get their dose of culture by participating in a walking tour of the InsideOut art exhibit presented by Perez Art Museum Miami and discover reproductions of masterpieces by 15 renowned artists. Visitors may bring their own beach picnic supplies and beach gear. The event is free and open to the public.

CODE COMPLIANCE CORNER

Permits are Required for Dumpsters Are you building or remodeling a home or condo apartment in Surfside? If so, you need to apply for and obtain a roll-off construction dumpster permit prior to ordering the dumpster. Start the process by completing a Town of Surfside Building Permit Application. The permit fee is $80 plus the County surcharge. Applications are available at Town Hall and online via the Town’s website: www.townofsurfsidefl.gov Currently, Surfside has an exclusive franchise agreement for construction debris removal. The dumpster provider is Waste Management. You are required to use this company when ordering a roll-off construction dumpster container. Waste Management can be reached at 305-471-4444. Roll-off construction dumpster containers must be placed in your driveway or on your property. They are not allowed to be placed on town property, roadways, rights-ofway, swales or on street ends. When the dumpster container is full, you or your contractor must have the container picked up by the waste hauling company. Full and overflowing dumpsters are a code violation, and property owners may be cited and assessed a civil fine for the public nuisance violation. If you have any questions about roll-off construction dumpsters, please call the Code Compliance Division at (305) 861-4863.

BLOOD DRIVE ON WEDNESDAY, OCT. 11

The Surfside Police Department is hosting a blood drive in conjunction with the One Blood organization. The blood drive will take place on Wednesday, October 11 from 12 to 4 pm. DRIVER’S LICENSE SERVICES AT TOWN HALL

Community Outreach Specialists from the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles will be setting up a mobile DMV at Town Hall on Thursday, October 19, 2017 from 10 am to 2 pm in the Commission Chambers. The services provided, fees for the services and documentation required is located on the Town website. SHRED-A-THON & PRESCRIPTION DISPOSAL

The Surfside Police Department will join with four other local agencies to host a shred-a-thon and prescription drug drop off on Saturday, October 28 from 10 am to 2 pm at the Bill Bird Marina in Haulover Park. By safely shredding personal papers and correspondence you can reduce your exposure to fraud and identify theft. There is a three box limit and no CDs, x-rays, binders or plastic will be accepted. October 28 is also National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. Bring your unused or expired medications for safe and proper disposal. For more information, contact Dina Goldstein at 305-861-4862. SAFETY VESTS FOR RESIDENTS ARE AVAILABLE AT TOWN HALL The Town of Surfside started a pilot program to offer high-visibility safety vests to make the wearer more visible to motorists. Research has shown that reflective vests will increase safety to pedestrians as they walk near traffic areas or cross streets. The “Civilian Safety Vest Program” has 20 vests available on a first come, first served basis, available at Town Hall.

FIND A PROBLEM? REPORT WITH SEECLICKFIX SeeClickFix is a mobile phone app for reporting non-emergency conditions within Surfside that may need to be addressed by the Town. (For emergencies call 911). Register Now for the Citizen’s Police Academy The Surfside Police Department is now accepting registration for the 16th Annual Citizen’s Police Academy (CPA). The Academy begins September 7 and takes place on Thursdays through November 16. Classes are from 6-9 p.m. at Town Hall. The 11 classes include Fire Rescue, Aviation Unit, K-9 Unit, Marine Patrol,

POLICE TEEN SUMMER CAMPERS GRADUATE

The 9th Police Teen Summer Camp class graduated on August 3 at the Surfside Community Center. During the camp, the teens were visited by the K-9 Squad, Legal, Fish and Wildlife Commission, Crime Scene, the Venom Response Unit and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Department Station 21. They enjoyed trips to the Fire Station 25, U.S. Coast Guard Air Bases in Opa-Locka and Miami Joining the Teen Summer Camp graduates are instructors from Sunny Isles Beach Police Department K-9 Beach, U.S. Customs and Border Unit, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Department Air Rescue were in Protection and Ocean Rescue. attendance for the celebration.

Officer Hernandez Solves A Prickly Crime

While patrolling in the residential area, Officer Dianna Hernandez observed a vehicle parked askew at 90th Street and Abbott Avenue. The driver was securing a large cactus to the roof of the vehi- Officer Hernandez, Lt. John Bambis cle. He stated he found the cactus in the middle of the road. The cactus appeared to have been freshly cut and a hand saw with wood debris was laying on the front passenger seat. After searching the area, a large cactus was found at a home planter with debris leading to the street. The homeowner said he did not cut his cactus or authorize anyone to trim the plant. The driver was arrested. Officer Hernandez was also able to return the stolen plant to the owner. Officer Dianna Hernandez is commended for her professionalism and dedication to the community.

Officer Gentileâ€™s Efforts Lead to Arrests and Recovery of Motorcycle

In the early morning hours, Officer John Gentile saw a vehicle with three occupants parked on the side of the road in the 9100 block of Collins Avenue and a person on a motorcycle nearby. The person on the motorcycle drove in the wrong Officer Gentile (R) with Captain Julio Yero. direction on Collins Avenue to avoid Officer Gentile. As the car left, Officer Gentile stopped the vehicle for an equipment violation. The occupants gave conflicting stories about their activities. Two BB guns, a bolt cutter and a baseball bat were inside the car as well as a motorcycle tag registered to a nearby address. The owner was contacted and verified the motorcycle was stolen. The three subjects were arrested for loitering and prowling. Two juveniles were issued civil citations and released to their parents. The adult and was charged with possession of a stolen tag and burglary tools. Within hours, the motorcycle was recovered by the Miami-Dade Police Department. Officer Gentile is commended for being proactive and alert and for his investigative ability.

Systems Support Specialist Jose Feliz provides information technology needs for all the departments in Surfside. On August 9, 2017, he was honored by the Surfside Police Department Command Staff for his unwavering level of commitment, dedication to his duties, his exemplary work ethic and his strong support for Surfside and the law enforcement community. Jose received an award plaque from Chief David Allen. Congratulations Jose!

STATE UNIFORM CRIME STATISTICS The Florida Department of Law Enforcement Uniform Crime Report for January to June 2017 has been released. Surfside had a significant reduction in Total Crimes, Violent Crimes and Property Crimes as compared to the first six months of 2016. There were decreases in most Part 1 Crimes including aggravated assault, burglary and larceny. Motor vehicle theft remained the same at three. Part 1 Crimes are murder, sexual battery, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny and motor vehicle theft. More significantly, our clearance rate increased from 27.5% to 45.5%. Of the crimes committed, many have been cleared by arrests. Arrests for Part 1 Total Crimes increased by 4.2%. Overall arrests for all incidents decreased from 117 in 2016 to 56 from January to June 2017. The reduction is most notable in narcotic and traffic arrests.

96th Street Park Wall Transformed by Hoxxoh, Muralist Surfside families and children can now enjoy a work of colorful, textured art on the once drab wall in theTown’s 96th Street Park thanks to the skills of well-known murialist Douglas Hoekzema, aka, Hoxxoh. Famous for his optical illusion-style images, Hoxxoh painted a series of flower-like spheres on the park wall which appear to be three-dimensional tunnel openings. Hoxxoh started as a graffiti artist in his teens, studied architecture before developing his mural style in Miami’s Wynwood neighborhood. Stop by the 96th Street Park and enjoy the art!

SURFSIDE CAMPERS CELEBRATE LAST DAY OF SUMMER Surfside campers enjoyed the last days of summer with outdoor activities. Family and friends joined the campers for the final day celebration, which included a dance performance and a special awareness project to promote sea turtle conservation (see poems at left).

Surfside Beach has 21 Sea Turtle Nests Residents may encounter endangered sea turtles on the Surfside beach. If you find a dead, sick, or injured sea turtle or hatchling(s), you can contact: Alex Martinez at 786-719-6836 or Teal Kawana at 305-310-3046 with the Miami Dade County Sea Turtle Program (MDCSTCP). You can also call the Florida Wildlife Commission at its 24-hour Wildlife Alert Number at 1-888-404-3922. You may receive further instructions from MDCSTCP SEPTEMBER 2017 SURFSIDE GAZETTE

Renewal Commencing on Sunday, October 1, 2017 for the upcoming fiscal year of Town of Surfside ID Card Program New Surfside ID Cards and/or Renewal of Surfside ID Cards

Process:  If the resident is the owner of the property, they must bring in their driver’s license and two of the following documents: (Residents that are renewing must also provide their Surfside ID)  Current Utility Bill  Current Bank Statement  Current Credit Card Statement 1. If the resident is a renter, they must bring in their driver’s license, and a copy of the lease that includes the dates of rental and people authorized to reside at the property, and one of the following documents: (Residents that are renewing must also provide their Surfside ID)  Current Utility Bill  Current Bank Statement  Current Credit Card Statement 2. If the resident is a renter without a valid lease, the owner must fill out the Temporary Community Center Access Form and have it notarized; which must include the dates of rental and people authorized to reside at the listed property. 3. The renters must provide the notarized Temporary Community Center Access form, and their driver’s license and one of the following documents: (Residents that are renewing must also provide their Surfside ID)  Current Utility Bill  Current Bank Statement  Current Credit Card Statement *Access to the Facility may be denied upon three notifications and

failure to renew your Resident ID card.

Surfside ID Cards expire on an annual basis and are valid from October 1st to September 30th of each fiscal year.

Everyone 18 & older must provide current proof of residency Resident ID Cards are limited to one family per address (Owners or Renters). There is a $5.00 charge for lost, stolen or replacement cards. ID Cards are issued to children 5 years and older. Parental Proof may be required for ages 5‐17.
