CHARLES W. BURKETT MAYOR As we approach a very happy time of the year, there is much to be thankful for, including our Town, our neighbors, our amazing natural resources, our access to the most wonderful things in life, our security, our ability to control our own lives and destiny, and on and on. How lucky are we all to live, work and love in this paradise we call home! Currently, everything in our town is “steady as she goes,’ with progress being made on most fronts. Is it challenging? Oh yes, but the team you have in place, Tina, Nelly, Gerardo and Ruben, all of whom are deeply dedicated to doing what is right, has already navigated hard issues and demonstrated the ability to make the right decisions. For all of them, I am grateful. Holiday decorations should be up soon, and my wish for everyone is that any discord or division is set far aside, and the joy of family, the warm convivial moments of the holidays and the special gifts from God, that we are all blessed with, will be front and center, and will be the only things we need to concern ourselves with through New Years. Let there be joy in Surfside, joy for your family and friends, and joy to the world!

NELLY VEL ASQUEZ COMMISSIONER The November commission meeting marked a milestone for our town, showcasing significant achievements and setting the stage for an exciting year ahead. Most notably, all five referendum questions placed on the ballot by the commission were overwhelmingly approved by voters. These measures are designed to preserve and protect our cherished small-town way of life, ensuring that our community remains a haven for generations to come. Another highlight is the long-awaited reopening of the 96th Street Park. This beloved community space has been revitalized to serve as a hub for recreation and relaxation. To celebrate, we invite families to join us on Dec. 15 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. for a Winter Wonderland of fun-filled activities, bringing neighbors together to enjoy the park’s new offerings. In truly exciting news, the commission announced the purchase of Pamela O’Hagan’s house at 9433 Harding Avenue. This property will be transformed into a valuable amenity for our residents. Personally, I support creating a much-needed gym and library—a place where our community can come together to learn, grow, and thrive. This addition will complement our town’s charm while providing services that enhance the quality of life for all residents.

TINA PAUL VICE MAYOR As the year comes to a close, December is a busy time with preparations for holiday festivities and is also time for reflection of our recent experiences and how we wish to move forward in the coming year. My highlight of 2024 was being elected to serve as your Vice Mayor and I am honored to work towards our common goals for maintaining our seaside paradise. The commission is moving forward with projects that will improve infrastructure and resiliency to benefit the community. We are grateful to Town staff for working tirelessly to provide excellent service for residents, businesses, and visitors. This holiday season celebrates light and miracles. I fondly reminisce about holidays spent with family and friends who are no longer here though the memories of our times together remain with me always. Holiday season is a time for appreciation and togetherness while aloneness is a time for reflection of the special moments life can offer us. I always look forward to our local events and to sharing in the festivities. This year we have a Christmas Tree lighting ceremony at Town Hall with Santa Claus in addition to the Chanukah Menorah lighting. Wishing all of Surfside warm and wonderful holiday celebrations full of inspiration for a very happy New Year 2025!

GERARDO VILDOSTEGUI By the time this issue of the Gazette reaches the Town’s mailboxes, the winter COMMISSIONER holiday season will be in full swing. For me, this joyful time of year is also an

occasion to think about time itself, and about how quickly and how strangely time passes. During this season, we participate in traditions—familial, cultural, and religious—that connect us to past times and to our own past selves. A recipe, a ritual, or an ornament can make time seem to stand still, or even fold back on itself. But this season also reminds us of time’s inevitable forward march, particularly when we’re reminded of loved ones who are no longer with us. Time’s strangeness makes itself felt in smaller ways, too, and in 2024, a couple of calendar-related quirks make this year’s holiday season especially distinctive. The first is that this year’s season is an unusually short one, with only 33 days between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day. That’s because November 1st fell on a Friday this year, and so Thanksgiving (the fourth Thursday of the month) fell on the 28th, its latest possible date. The smaller number of days doesn’t have to mean less celebration, though: I prefer to see this year’s calendar as offering us the holidays in a more concentrated and more potent dose. The 2024 season’s second—and more meaningful—quirk comes from the complicated dance of the Gregorian and Jewish calendars. This year, their two cycles align such that Hanukkah begins on Christmas night. The last week of 2024, then, promises to be a week of resonant, harmonious celebration—a total overlap between the eight nights of Hanukkah and the twelve days of Christmas. I look forward to that celebration in Surfside, and to enjoying the two calendars’ joint gift to us, the gift of unity in diversity. Happy Holidays, Surfside! Let’s make the most of these 33 (or so) days.

SURFSIDE HOSTS RIBBON-CUTTING FOR NEW CITI BIKE STATIONS

SURFSIDE VETERANS DAY CEREMONY HONORS SERVICE AND SACRIFICE

On Oct. 30, 2024, the Town of Surfside celebrated the launch of its new Citi Bike stations during FDOT’s Mobility Week. Held at the 94th Street station in front of Publix, the ribbon-cutting ceremony marked the official unveiling of one of four new bike rental stations added in partnership with Citi Bike. The event was attended by Vice Mayor Tina Paul, Commissioner Gerardo Vildostegui, and representatives from Citi Bike and the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT). Commissioner Micky Steinberg was also represented at the event. These new Citi Bike stations aim to enhance mobility options for residents and visitors, with locations conveniently placed at:

The Town of Surfside commemorated Veterans Day with a meaningful ceremony on Monday, Nov. 11, at Veterans Park. Organized by the Parks and Recreation Department, the event brought the community together to honor the nation’s veterans.

Mayor Burkett, Vice Mayor Paul, and Commissioner Vildostegui delivered speeches recognizing the sacrifices of those who served in the U.S. Armed Forces. Their remarks highlighted the importance of gratitude and remembrance. The program included an invocation by Rabbi Avrohomel Hayman of the Shul and a benediction by Deacon Roberto Pineda of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Byanca Alemán, a student at the New World School of the Arts, gave a powerful performance of the National Anthem.

IN MEMORIAM: HONORING THE LIFE OF JAMES MARTIN CORPORA James Martin Corpora, 69, passed away on Nov. 8, 2024. He was born in the Bronx, New York as one of 14 children. He was a loving husband to Ana Maria and a wonderful father to Danielle (Mikhail) and Dominick. He adored his 2 grandchildren, Caspian & maxim, who were his life. He is survived by his siblings Eddie (Cathy), Joanne (dick), Eileen, Celeste, and Anne.

CRB PRESENTS ‘HOW TO TALK TO YOUR NEIGHBORS ABOUT POLITICS On Tuesday, Oct. 29, Surfside’s Community Relations Board (CRB) held its second event of the season, ‘How to Talk to Your Neighbors About Politics,’ an interactive session led by Executive Leadership Coach Isaac M. Carter, Ph. D. The event featured pastries by local business The Gifted Crust and aimed to provide participants with tools that help facilitate healthy, productive discussion during election season.

James was an incredible storyteller, like the enthralling recounting of his time in Vietnam, a place he had never been to. He would skillfully narrate the details of his entire day when you call him, so a quick call to ask one question would take a bit longer than usual. He was a dreamer - he had grand plans for his boats that were in constant

repair, or the movie he was producing that was coming to a theater near you. James was larger than life and universally loved by all who knew him. He was filled with positivity and made a lasting impression on every person he met. His big heart compelled him to go out of his way to help others, making friends everywhere he went. He never took himself too seriously and was always joking around or giving you a hard time. Life’s simple pleasures would bring him tremendous joy - a lesson we could all learn from him. He will remain extremely loved and incredibly missed. He was truly one-of-a-kind.

SUSTAINABILIT Y COMMITTEE HOSTS PL ATFORM SURFSIDE INTERACTIVE EXHIBITION

SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES FOR THE HOLIDAY SEASON During the holidays, we have a unique opportunity to practice sustainability in our celebrations. Here are some simple but impactful steps we can all take:

Last month, the Sustainability and Resiliency Committee hosted Platform Surfside: Flood Mitigation and Resilient Strategies for Coastal Communities, an interactive exhibition focused on innovative approaches to flood mitigation, climate adaptation, and sustainability. The exhibition featured cutting-edge research and conceptual proposals and models from students at Syracuse University and the University of Miami Schools of Architecture. Two events were held for the initiative, a Seaside Adaptations Workshop and a Closing Presentation and Roundtable Discussion. A big thank you to everyone involved in the effort including Sustainability Committee Chair, former Mayor Daniel Dietch, Committee Member Roy Raskin, Liaison Vice Mayor Tina Paul, Commissioner Vildostegui, and the talented students and faculty of Syracuse University and University of Miami.

1. Waste Reduction: Be mindful of the waste generated during celebrations. Using reusable or compostable plates, cups, and cutlery can help reduce reliance on single-use plastics. 2. Composting and Recycling: Correctly composting organic waste (like food scraps) and recycling materials can significantly improve waste management. 3. Eco-Friendly Gift Ideas: Instead of physical items, consider sustainable gifts like reusable water bottles, eco-friendly bags, or even experiences. These thoughtful gifts are often more memorable and reduce unnecessary waste.

SURFSIDE HONORS SGT. JOSE PACHECO FOR 23 YEARS OF DEDICATED SERVICE

RESORT TAX BOARD’S SURF FOOD FEST MAKES ROCKING RETURN TO 93RD STREET Last month, visitors and residents enjoyed the second iteration of one of Surfside’s newest events, Surf Food Fest presented by the Resort Tax Board.

Sergeant Jose Pacheco was celebrated at a retirement ceremony Wednesday after 23 years of service with the Surfside Police Department. Family, friends, and colleagues gathered at Town Hall’s Commission Chambers to honor his contributions to the community and express their gratitude. Pacheco, who joined the department in 2001, was commended for his commitment to public safety, his leadership, and his dedication to Surfside’s residents. Chief of Police Henry Doce praised Pacheco’s role in shaping a safer, more connected community, noting that his presence would be missed.

The food truck and entertainment event featured more than 30 food trucks and tents with something for everyone plus a bar. From American to Mexican, Puerivan and Cuban to Burmese and kosher - even the most particular eaters had something to savor. The evening’s music entertainment kept the energy going throughout while kids enjoyed the arts and crats station. Attendees also had the chance to participate in a free raffle for complimentary meal tickets. The next Surf Food Fest events are scheduled for Feb. 6 and April 3 – please make sure you join us! The ceremony, attended by Pacheco’s wife and daughter, included remarks from fellow officers who shared memories of his impact on both the department and the Town. Colleagues highlighted his professionalism, empathy, and mentorship, which they say defined his career. “Sergeant Pacheco exemplified what it means to be a community servant,” said Chief Doce. “His dedication and compassion set a standard for all of us.” Following the formal presentation, Pacheco was presented with a commemorative plaque in recognition of his years of service. As he accepted, he expressed his gratitude for the support he’s received throughout his career and reflected on his time in Surfside. “It has been an honor to serve this community,” said Pacheco. “Thank you to everyone who has made this journey meaningful and fulfilling.” The Surfside community joins his family, friends, and colleagues in wishing Sergeant Pacheco happiness and success in his retirement.

GIFTED CRUST BAKERY OPENS IN SURFSIDE, BRINGING ARTISANAL SOURDOUGH TO HARDING AVENUE Gifted Crust Bakery has officially opened its doors in Surfside, offering residents and visitors an array of artisanal sourdough breads and baked goods. Located at 9523 Harding Ave., the women-owned bakery focuses on sourdough, using traditional techniques and slow fermentation to produce bread that’s rich in flavor and texture.

RESIDENCE INN MIAMI BEACH SURFSIDE HOSTS COFFEE WITH THE COP The Police Department’s monthly community event, Coffee with the Cops, has made its way to a number of new venues over the last few months. The event was recently held at the Residence Inn Miami Beach Surfside where hotel staff welcomed the Town with a delicious array of breakfast pastries and coffee options to enjoy. Many residents participated, joining Chief Doce and command staff in addition to Town Manager Peter Jankowski for the morning gathering. Vice Mayor Paul and Commissioner Vildostegui also stopped by to join the conversation.

Keeping Surfside’s beachgoers safe is a priority for the Town, which relies on the expertise of the hardworking and talented lifeguards under Parks and Recreation. Led by Aquatics Supervisor Marianella Marcano, the team of lifeguards recently conducted a high octane ocean rescue training session to test and develop their skills during potentially stressful situations.
