Message from the Town Manager Springtime is upon us and so too are a series of initiatives and programs benefiting our community. We invite you to tune into Surfside’s local TV Channel 93. The station has been revamped with modern, exciting and resident-centered content, including a Surfside 7 segment which highlights top happenings each month. Watch Channel 93 (Atlantic Broadband) on your television or view it online on the Town website. Channel 93 also regularly broadcasts Town Commission meetings, as well as other meetings (more on page 3). Last month, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers held a Beach Renourishment Community Meeting at Town Hall to inform residents about this monumental project which is slated to start this summer. For the latest project updates, check out the Town website or refer to our monthly Surf’s Up Corner on page 3. In search of ways to keep your children physically and mentally active over spring break? Enroll them in the Surfside Spring Adventure Camp. Tree City USA for the Third Consecutive Year For the third year, the Town of Surfside has been designated a Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation. The designation shows Surfside’s commitment in managing trees on public land and increasing the Town’s important tree canopy. Thanks goes to the Public Works Department for its dedicated efforts to meet the standards of Tree City USA recognition.

POPULAR THIRD THURSDAYS RETURNS FOR 2019

The Surfside Tourist Bureau’s 11th annual year of hosting the popular Third Thursdays block parties got off to a rousing start on February 21, 2019 with chef demonstrations, live music from Brothers of Others, games, an interactive mural, herb planting station, delicious samplings from local restaurants, and healthy living ideas for the entire family. Mark your calendar for the March 21 Third Thursdays with a theme of Be Well – Yoga & Wellness. Do not forget your yoga clothes!

Keeping the Business District Clean

BOOTCAMP & BREWS - WHAT A COMBINATION Surfside is a favorite spot for combining outdoor workouts with beautiful scenery. So it makes sense that the first annual Bootcamp & Brews events, sponsored by the Tourist Bureau, were a huge success. Held on January 17 and February 7, 2019, residents and guests broke a sweat and learned new moves in the hour-long workout. Held on the beach in front of the Grand Beach Hotel Surfside, four of Miami’s best trainers created a distinct workout regimen. After the bootcamp, guests retreated to the garden area of the Grand Beach Hotel Surfside for post-workout beers sponsored by Concrete Beach Brewing, Estrella Damm and Saltwater Brewery. Lahh Salon, a local favorite, provided a braid bar for the perfect post-workout hair. Fiji Water provided the H20 and Harmless Harvest provided refreshing coconut water. DJ Supersede, the official DJ of the Miami Dolphins, kept the energy going with lively beats.

Storefront and sidewalk cleanliness is an important component of operating a successful business. It is the first impression customers have regarding a store or restaurant and it should be a positive one. Under the Town Code, Section 14-51, General Property Maintenance, every owner of a commercial property or tenant shall be responsible for maintaining the exterior of the store/business in a clean, sanitary and safe condition. Under the Town Code, Section 14-52, Commercial Property Maintenance, every merchant, storekeeper or operator shall sweep and/or hose down the sidewalks adjoining the business whenever necessary to keep the area clean. The sweeping must be picked up and not swept into the gutter. For those businesses that have a sidewalk café operation, under Town Code, Section 18-92, the area covered by a sidewalk café permit, and the sidewalk and street immediately adjacent to it shall be maintained in a clean, neat and orderly appearance at all times. The sidewalk surface on which the café is located must also be pressure cleaned at the close of each business day. The Town of Surfside works closely with business operators and property owners to follow the Town’s storefront and sidewalk cleanliness standards. If the Surfside Code Compliance Team finds a property owner, agent or tenant not following these standards, they will be contacted regarding the compliance standards and civil penalties of non-compliance. TUNE IN TO CHANNEL 93 FOR NEW AND EXCITING CONTENT

Have you watched local TV Channel 93 lately? The Town of Surfside is proud to announce the launch of new and exciting content geared towards Town residents. The revamped channel can be viewed on TV via Atlantic Broadband or streamed live on the Town website at www.townofsurfsidefl.gov. Tune in for features spotlighting the area, local businesses and the people who make the Surfside community special. In addition, enjoy a brand new Surfside 7 segment, a monthly run-down of the top seven happenings around Town. Channel 93 also continues to be a great source to catch Town Hall meetings, which are streamed live and are re-aired periodically.

OCEAN WATER QUALITY TESTING & REPORTING The health and safety of our residents and visitors are paramount in Surfside. Our Town officials and Parks and Recreation staff maintain a close watch on crucial updates regarding the ocean water quality through resources made available by the Miami-Dade County Department of Health. A water test site is at 93rd Street behind the Community Center in Surfside. Updates on water quality are uploaded to the County’s Florida Healthy Beaches Program at www.floridahealth.gov. The Florida Health Department provides notifications pertaining to water quality and if unsafe water quality conditions are reported, such as confirmed bacteria in the ocean, the Town alerts residents immediately through various communication channels including the Town website, Nextdoor and e-blasts.

A public and informational Beach Renourishment Community Meeting was held on Wednesday, February 13 at 6 pm in the Town Hall Commission Chambers. The meeting was hosted by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Miami-Dade County. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers shared a presentation and also answered questions from the attendees. Currently, the project is slated to begin sometime this summer. For additional information and frequent updates, visit the Town website and click on the banner titled Beach Renourishment Project. REDUCING SPEEDING IN NEIGHBORHOODS

The Surfside Public Works Department installs and maintains signage throughout Town. As directed from the Traffic Mitigation Committee, speed bumps have been installed in the residential area to reduce speeding. Speed bumps were recently installed on the 9400 block of Abbott Avenue (see above). These speed bumps are equivalent in dimension to concrete speed bumps and assist with the slowing traffic.

Sewer backups caused by grease deposits and the flushing of non-disposable items such as wipes and diapers can be costly and cause damage to the Town’s infrastructure, resulting in overflowing of sewer cleanouts, non-working drains and traffic congestions. An interruption of the Town’s septic system can last for several hours before corrections are made. Please dispose of grease properly in separate containers and not in sinks. All non-disposable items should be discarded through solid waste.

OFFICER AND CIVILIAN OF THE MONTH – OFFICER JOSE VALINO AND PARKING ENFORCEMENT OFFICER JOSUE CASTRO When a Bal Harbour police officer attempted to stop a vehicle, the driver fled southbound on Harding Avenue in Surfside. Parking Enforcement Officer Josue Castro saw the vehicle driving recklessly and reported on the radio it had entered the 94 Street Municipal Parking Lot. PEO Castro saw five men exit the vehicle and run south. Bal Harbour Police confirmed it matched the car that had fled. Officer Jose Valino responded to the area and saw two of the subjects. He pursued them and took both into custody without incident. Officers from Bal Harbour and Surfside located the other three subjects. All were apprehended and arrested. The Surfside Police Department is hosting a National Take Back Initiative on Saturday, April 27, 2019 from 10 am – 2 pm. A collection box will be in the Surfside Police Department lobby for residents to drop off unwanted and unused pharmaceutical controlled substances for destruction. The drugs must be sealed in their original container. No intra-venous solutions, injectibles or syringes. For more information, contact Dina Goldstein at (305) 861-4862.

The Surfside Police Department will join with four other local agencies to host a Shred-A-Thon and Prescription Drug Drop Off on Saturday, April 27, 2019, 10 am–2 pm at the Bill Bird Marina in Haulover Park, 10800 Collins Avenue. There is a three box limit and no CDs, x-rays, binders or plastic will be accepted. Also bring unused or expired medications for safe and proper disposal.

HOW TO REPORT AN ISSUE TO THE POLICE DEPARTMENT The Surfside Police Department's primary functions are to: Ensure public safety Prevent and/or reduce crime Enforce Florida State Statutes & County/Town Ordinances Manage and improve traffic safety Ensure the protection of citizens' constitutional rights Partner with the community to solve problems

The Surfside Police Department has police personnel and a communications operator assigned 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.Â The Surfside Police Department will respond to all calls for service including medical emergencies.Â

In the event of emergency situations and in-progress crimes, citizens should call 911. For non-emergency situations, citizens should call the Surfside Police Department non-emergency phone number at (305) 861-4862. The Surfside Police Department works in conjunction with the Code Compliance Division. If reporting a Code issue during non-working hours, the Police Department will either have a Police Officer respond and document the issue, or directly forward the issue to Code Compliance to handle when they have personnel on-duty.

During routine business operations (Monday through Friday, 9 am to 5 pm), residents can report a suspected code violation by dialing (305) 861 - 4863, and ask to be connected with the Code Compliance office. On weekends and legal holidays, and all other times, please dial the Surfside Police Department's non-emergency line at (305) 861 - 4862. . Both the Code Compliance Division and the Surfside Police Department will respond to complaints that involve public health & life safety issues and public nuisances. If the violator fails to rectify the violation, then progressive steps are taken to resolve the problem.

A PERFECT DAY FOR FAMILY FUN ! Hundreds of Surfsiders gathered at the 96 Street Park for the Parks & Recreation’s annual Family Fun Day on February 17, 2019. Under the a sunny sky, families and children enjoyed a variety of rides, bounce houses, face painting, balloon creations, snow-cones, cotton candy and a DJ. There was also tours of a Ballistic Armored Tactical Transport and a special K-9 presentation thanks to the Police Departments of Surfside, Aventura and North Miami Beach. After working up an appetite, everyone was treated to a delicious picnic lunch. Thanks to all who helped make the memorable event funfilled and relaxing!

Town of Surfside Higher Education Scholarship The Town of Surfside Higher Education Scholarship funds will be awarded to the successful student applicants upon evidence of registration in an accredited

In celebration of Arbor Day, the Town of Surfside is conducting a tree giveaway one tree per household

post-secondary institution. The Town of Surfside would like to promote higher education by providing two $1,000 scholarships. The scholarships will be awarded to two deserving Town of Surfside graduating seniors interested in or intending to pursue post-high school course of study. Continuation of education must be at either college/university level or other post-secondary educational institution. The applicants will be selected by the Town of Surfside Scholarship

To participate, fill out the online form on the Town website. The deadline to complete the form is 5 p.m. on March 22, 2019.
