Town Manager’s Message This is my last column as your Town Manager. In the time that Chris and I have called Surfside home, we have been warmly received and have made many friendships that we will long remember and value. As I depart, I would like to recognize our outstanding Town employees who strive each day to provide you with quality municipal services that make Surfside a safe and outstanding community in which to live in. Please see the article below which provides a glimpse of typical responses from citizens regarding their view and appreciation of our employees as they go about their daily activities. Also, a salute to our elected officials who devote countless hours to their duties and for their support during my tenure in Surfside as we worked together to make our Town better day by day. The Town’s future is bright with unlimited potential. Thank you for allowing me to be a very small part of this exciting time in Surfside’s history.

Exceptional Service of Town Employees Recognized by Residents The Town recently received two letters from residents that are typical of the appreciation expressed by residents regarding the efforts of our employees who go above and beyond normal municipal service delivery.
From Regina Stella, a 40 year resident . . . I have never received such caring, compassion and understanding as was given by the workers and supervisors of the Water Department, and the policeman that answered my call on September 30. I woke up early and heard water running. I looked around my home, but did not see any leaking anywhere. I did not know what to do, as it was quite early, so I called the police and asked them for advice. The officer that answered my call was Don McGavern. He was just so nice, and showed so much compassion. He offered to call one of the men from the water department, Hector Rodriguez. No more than 30 minutes later, Hector was knocking on my door, with some workers (who also by the way were immensely polite). Once Hector saw what the problem was, he called his supervisor, Randy Stokes, and together they came up with a solution Continued on Page 6

Harding Avenue Lights Up the Night! The Tourist Board and Town Commission approved the use of Resort (Tourism) Tax to fund seasonal lighting on the trees on Harding Avenue in the business district. These attractive lights complement the new streetscape project that has transformed Surfside’s downtown into an inviting and welcoming destination.

Surfside Shines on Small Business Saturday Surfside was an official Small Business Saturday® neighborhood champion on Saturday, November 29. This nationwide movement, founded by American Express in 2010, encourages customers to shop at their local small businesses on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. This year downtown Surfside was energized with special deals, promotions and shopping fun. Two weeks before the big day, Surfside introduced 19 Surfside Small Business Saturday® business advocates via social media. Customers were introduced to their products and services through videos. Each business offered special promotions for customers on November 29. On the big day, Harding Avenue shops opened their doors to customers and spread the Shop Small® movement. The Surfside Street Team rewarded customers with free tote bags and buttons for participating.

Fashion came to downtown Surfside at a trunk show hosted by The Scarlet Letter, with apparel from Le Beau Maroc and styling from Elle Air Blow Dry & Make Up Bar. Guests were treated with complimentary hair styling, Moroccan cookies, delicious drinks and a sneak peek into the latest pieces from Le Beau Maroc and The Scarlet Letter. Dr. David Carmona and his staff celebrated the Grand Opening of the Veterinary Wellness Center of Surfside, on November 13. An affair for all members of the family included facility tours, appetizers, drinks and dog treats for the furry guests.

Successful Entrepreneurs Call Surfside Home in North Miami. Yos continues to serve as the Chief Culinary Officer.
It all started on a whim. Zalmi Duchman and his best friend from high school, Yos Schwartz, had a phone conversation about starting a business that would deliver gourmet meals directly to the homes of people who wanted fresh, healthy food. The result was Fresh Diet. Still in his twenties and working from his apartment in Los Angeles, he started the company in 2005 with $500 from a credit card.
Zalmi was recently featured in the Miami Herald as one of the region’s top business leaders under 40 years old. Two years ago, he was named one of “America’s Most Promising CEOs Under 35” by Forbes magazine.

The Fresh Diet plan was to have a central kitchen that could provide door-to-door service in up-scale large metropolitan areas, starting with South Florida. Each day, clients would receive three meals and two snacks, all customized to each person’s taste, including specialized diets such as vegetarian and gluten-free. Zalmi advertised Fresh Diet by making deliveries in a high-profile Hummer and a Mini Cooper, both emblazoned with the company’s logo and images of fresh food. Yos had graduated from the Cordon Bleu culinary school in Pasadena and was involved in the operations and managed the culinary department. He created the menus. “I didn’t do any market research and I didn’t write a complex business plan. I just had an idea and went with it,” he said. And the idea revolutionized weight loss and healthy eating at home. Fresh Diet rapidly expanded and established kitchens in Los Angeles, Dallas, Chicago and New York. In August 2014, the publically traded Innovative Food Holdings aquired Fresh Diet for $13 million in stock. Zalmi remains active with the company, which is headquartered

In recent months, Zalmi has taken an interest in local start-up companies and provides advice and coaching at the Venture Hive in downtown Miami. He is considering creating an “angle investment fund” to help launch promising tech-related businesses. “It is an exciting time to be in Miami. We really have the opportunity to become a tech hub for all of the Americas,” he said. Zalmi grew up in Miami Beach and when he was looking for a community for his family – he and his wife have three children – they chose Surfside. His children all attended preschool at the Shul. The Schwartz family joined the Duchmans in Surfside. Yos and his wife have two young daughters that also attend preschool at the Shul. “We really like it here. It is a great neighborhood for us,” Zalmi said.

Captain Julio Yero Joins Surfside Police Department Julio Yero began his career as a police officer in the Town of Surfside. Now he has come full circle. He was recently welcomed back and sworn in as Surfside’s new Police Captain. He was formerly a Lieutenant with the Miami Beach Police Department and held command positions
in the Patrol Division, Criminal Investigations Division and the Internal Affairs Unit. He also managed staffing and logistics for major events such as the Super Bowl, Spring Break, Memorial Day Weekend, Fourth of July and New Year’s Eve celebrations. He led a contingent of Miami Beach Police officers as a security detail in Washington, D.C. for President Obama’s Inauguration.

Rolex Thief Arrested After a thorough investigation and working with other police departments, Surfside Police arrested a notorious Rolex thief who stole watches from a Surfside jewelry store in the 9500 block of Harding Avenue. The crime took place on the afternoon of October 29, when two Rolex watches valued at $56,000 were stolen. The subject fled into a waiting vehicle. Through surveillance video, Surfside police detectives identified the subject. He was wanted for similar thefts and robberies of Rolex watches in Sarasota and Boca Raton. Less than two weeks later, the individual was stopped in Hialeah for a traffic infraction and driving with a suspended license. Hialeah Police contacted Surfside Police who arrested him for grand theft.
Captain Yero has supervised the Homicide Squad and investigated murders, high profile death penalty cases and police officer involved shootings. He was the Commander of the Hostage Negotiations team for the past seven years and worked closely with the SWAT team on numerous critical incidents.
13th Citizens Police Academy Graduates The 25 participants of the 13th Citizens Police Academy class graduated on November 17 after completing the 12 week program. It was one of the most popular and successful in the history of the Academy. The class had exciting presentations and demonstrations from the Miami-Dade Police Department Aviation Unit, Station 21 Fire Rescue, Miami-Dade Schools Police K-9 Unit, State Attorney’s Office, Crime Scene Investigations, Homicide, S.W.A.T. and the Marine Patrol Unit.
Costumed Families Enjoy Halloween Block Party The Halloween Block Party sponsored by the Surfside Police Department has become a Town tradition with thousands gathering in the residential neighborhood to compare costumes, socialize and pick-up goodies for the children.

I am an 82 year old widow that just underwent total knee replacement (3 weeks prior) and I am still moderately immobile, and I felt helpless. These men, together made me feel so secure and took this huge burden off of my shoulders, and my gratitude will be endless. Joseph Senker, a resident since 2001 . . . I personally thanked Mr. Ross Prieto and Mr. Elinor Joseph but I wanted to let you know that I greatly appreciate their help with an event that I had for my son’s Bar-Mitzvah at
the Young Israel this past weekend. They worked with me to allow me to be able to erect a temporary canopy tent and allowed me to pay for reserved parking for a refrigerated truck which was key to the event going off without a hitch. As an owner and resident of Surfside since 2001, it is great to know that as this awesome town continues to grow the service only continues to get better each day. It’s Cookie Season for New Girl Scout Troop Surfside’s new Daisy Girl Scout Troop 739 is the only Girl Scout troup in Town and is now up to six girls. They are planning to start door-to-door cookie sales and possibly at a table in Surfside. So keep an eye out for them! The Surfside Daisy troop is open to kindergarten and first grade girls. Spooktacular is a Surfside Treat! The 96th Street Park was transformed into a Halloween carnival on October 31. The fun included a haunted maze, rides, snacks, candy, crafts, music, games and hundreds of costumed characters – both spooky and spectacular! Congratulations to the Parks and Recreation Department for another excellent event.
The Importance of Industry Trades Shows & Sales Missions Participation in tourism trade shows, and conducting sales missions that create a presence among our target tourism markets, are important components of a comprehensive marketing plan for the Town of Surfside Tourist Board. Now in its second year, the Town’s Five Year Strategic Tourism Plan identifies key promotional/sales opportunities that are essential to Surfside. Last year, the Tourist Board agreed to partner with the Grand Beach Hotel

Surfside (GBHS) to market the destination at international trade shows, including the World Travel Mart (WTM) London and ITB Berlin as well as Pow Wow Chicago; and to participate in sales missions to Latin America and Europe. Many of these opportunities were made possible by working with our partners at Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau (GMCVB), Visit Florida and Brand USA to offset the overall expense. This year, GBHS and Surfside have already had a presence at WTM London (www.wtmlondon.com). Pending Tourist Board approval, we will support attendance at this year’s trade shows and additional sales missions to Canada and, possibly, Russia. It is important for Surfside to compete on the global tourism stage and reach out directly to our target markets. For example, Bal Harbour allocates approximately $660k for such endeavors. Supporting our partners like GBHS, as well as future hotel properties, will help to increase the resort tax revenue that benefits the residents of Surfside.
The Grand Beach Hotel Surfside West is scheduled to open on December 1, 2014. It is located across Collins Avenue from the beach front Grand Beach Hotel, which opened one year ago. The new facility is in walking distance to the Surfside Business District. The “West Hotel” offers a pool and sun-deck on the roof and visitors have complete use of the restaurant, spa and beach services at the Oceanfront Hotel and use of the pool amenities at the nearby Surfside Community Center.
