Town Manager’s Message Even though we are surrounded by water in South Florida, all of us in Surfside should be doing our part to conserve our precious drinking water. That is why the Town of Surfside has joined in the National Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation in April 2015. This fourth annual event is a friendly competition to see which municipality can be most “water wise.” There are plenty of prizes involved, but the most important goal is to raise awareness and get everyone thinking of ways to save water. The competition is judged by the percentage of residents who participate. All you have to do is go to the website www.mywaterpledge.com. There is a one-click registration (no costs or gimmicks) and you, and Surfside, can win prizes for your water-saving ideas. You will be seeing and hearing advertising on the Challenge throughout April. Consider some of these statistics: • Each person in South Florida uses about 140 gallons of water a day (including agriculture). • Taking a bath uses about 70 gallons of water. A five minute shower uses 10-25 gallons. • A running toilet can waste 200 gallons a day. At one drip per second, a leaky faucet can waste 3,000 gallons a year. Surfside Garbage Trucks are Now Rolling Murals

Yes, that is a loggerhead turtle swimming out from behind the Town seal on the door of a Surfside garbage truck! What was once a plain white cab is now an eye-catching design of swirling aqua waves and the Town’s trademark turtle. The Public Works Department recently dressed up the trucks with new artwork that promotes the Town’s seashore and turtle themes.

Resort-style Residence Inn to Open in Late Summer A $52 million resort-style Residence Inn by Marriott is under construction at 92nd Street and Collins Avenue in Surfside. Atlanta-based Hotel Equities will manage the 175-room upscale property and Sean McKeen has been named the hotel’s General Manager. Mr. McKeen will oversee all operations at the hotel including food and beverage concepts, sales, marketing and revenue management strategies. He Sean McKeen will also execute timelines and all activities to prepare the hotel for opening. It will be the only all-suite hotels in the area. The hotel commands a two-acre site that will include a spacious, lushly landscaped interior courtyard area with adjoining suites and unique guest amenities. The four-story property offers ocean views from a roof-top pool surrounded by cabanas and a full bar. On the main floor, the communal-designed lobby and public space incorporates a tropical feel and features a uniquely chic lobby bar. The attached 191-space parking deck offers both self-park and valet options.

April 3rd Thursday Headed South of the Border With ‘Viva La Mexico’ At the March 3rd Thursday, downtown Surfside enjoyed the Indian-inspired, Bollywood Meets Surfside. This stop on our series of world travels brought us to India, in a beautiful backdrop fit for royalty. The night was filled with live music and a special performance from Bollywoodinspired dancers. Attendees enjoyed the colorful décor and food trucks serving amazing meals and desserts. Surfside Circle Members enjoyed access to the exclusive VIP area with their very own 3rd Thursdays cinnamon scented candle. Inside the VIP area, complimentary mango juice, a favorite treat popular in the India culture, was served while others received traditional temporary henna. Due to overwhelming compliments from residents, visitors and the business community, the Tourist Board worked with Miami Christmas Lights to extend the holiday lighting period in the Harding Avenue business district trees through the end of April .

Surfside has a new sweet sensation with the newly opened Yogurt Spot, 9519 Harding Ave. Yogurt Spot has a unique process for their sweet confections. Customers choose from a variety of certified Kosher and dairy yogurt flavors, self-serve their selections, mix and match toppings, and then weigh their masterpiece for a price. The Yogurt Spot menu also features smoothies, fresh juices and Panini options.

Town Flood Services

The Town offers several flood-related services to Surfside residents, including: • Access to the Flood Insurance Rate Maps to show if your property is in a special flood hazard area or may be affected by coastal erosion • Consultation on the Substantial Damage/Improvement 50% rule • Site-specific elevations for mechanical equipment • Elevation certificates • General local flood hazard information and brochures Town Staff will offer advice and visit properties upon request to review flood risks and explain ways to prevent flood damage. Dept. of Motor Vehicles to Visit on April 16

Community Outreach Specialists from the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DMV) will be setting up a mobile DMV at Town Hall on Thursday April 16 from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the 2nd floor Police Training Room. Film Ordinance Workshop on April 29 A workshop regarding filming within the Town of Surfside will take place on Wednesday, April 29 at 7 p.m. Based on the feedback from residents following the Film Ordinance Community Meeting in February, a workshop to identify and examine all possible recommendations and code compliance issues was requested. Surfsider Wins Spelling Bee Jack Benveniste-Plitt, an eighth-grader at Hebrew Academy, recently won the 75th Annual Miami Herald Spelling Bee for Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties. With his family watching from the front row, he took home the trophy for correctly spelling umbrageous. The14-year-old also won a Kindle and a trip to Washington, D.C. for the Scripps National Spelling Bee in May. Congratulations to Jack and his parents, Tami and Jared.

Dog Safety Expo at Haulover on April 12

The Surfside Police Department will join with several Miami-Dade agencies to host a Dog Safety Expo on Sunday April 12 from 9 am - 12 pm at the Haulover Bark Park, 10800 Collins Avenue. There will be K-9 and obedience demonstrations, dog CPR instructions, dog health and wellness information and free treats. Parking will be $2 with dogs and $7 without a dog. Surfside in Florida’s Top 20 Cities for Real Estate Investing A recent study on the best places to invest in Florida real estate listed Surfside as the 18th best investment out of 227 municipalities. The study was done by consumer finance site NerdWallet. Researchers looked at analyzed data from the U.S. Census, Florida Department of Revenue and real estate database Zillow. The key factors were market health score, affordability (cost per square foot), growth score for the past 10 years and tax rate. Most of the top areas were in Miami-Dade and Broward, including eight of the top ten and 14 of the top 20. Doral and our neighbor Bal Harbour scored first and second. Joint Tourism/Commission Meeting Set A Joint Meeting of the Town Commission and Tourist Board is set for Monday May 4, 2015 at 7pm in the Commission Chambers. The agenda will address potential changes to the existing Resort Tax Ordinance as well as Tourist Board policies, procedures, ethics and membership. Construction May Impact Surfsiders The Florida Department of Transportation reports that Surfside residents traveling through Bay Harbor Islands and the Broad Causeway may be affected by lane closures and detours because of construction on Kane Concourse and the bridge through July 2015. On Kane Concourse, sections of curb, gutter and sidewalks will be replaced, brick pavers will be installed at intersections, there will be new signage, paving and striping. The expansion joints on the draw bridge over the intracoastal waterway are also being replaced, requiring lane closures.

FPL to Reduce Surfside Electric Rates in May Just in time for the sweltering summer, the Town of Surfside will soon receive some good news from their Florida Power & Light bills. Electric rates are set to drop 2 percent in May thanks to projected fuel savings primarily because of lower natural gas costs. The electric utility recently filed a request with the Florida Public Service Commission (PSC) to reduce the rates. It is projected that the impact for Surfside will be a decrease of approximately 2 percent compared with current rates. Of course, each customer’s total electric costs reflect both rates and actual electricity usage. Overall, residential electric bills are going down. In fact, the typical residential customer bill will be approximately 30 percent lower than the national average and, for nearly six years, the lowest of Florida’s electric utilities.

February Officers of the Month Honored

Surfside Sergeant Patrick McKenna and Officers Tammy Campbell, Loxley Arch, Tony Mesa and Dianna Hernandez were named Officers of the Month for their outstanding work in a dangerous situation.

All available Surfside Police units responded to a call on February 12 of an aggravated battery in progress and a description of a man possibly armed with a gun. As Officers Arch and Campbell arrived in the area, they found a man matching the description fleeing the scene. The Town of Surfside Parks and Recreation Department is proud to announce the return of our Teen Camp. The camp is provided for children between the ages of 12 – 15 years old. The teen camp will provide an opportunity for children to learn hands on pre-counselor training skills and enjoy their summer by participating in age appropriate activities for teens. All participants have the opportunity to participate as a CIT twice a week. Campers will receive service hours for hours volunteered.

The March Brunch Bunch had another successful event. Guest speaker, Dr Kiedrowski, Chief Medical Officer of the Miami Jewish Health Systems, discussed the importance of successful aging and achieving it with dignity. Next Brunch Bunch is Friday, April 10.

Water Safety Awareness Class The Town of Surfside Parks and Recreation Department will be hosting a free Water Safety Awareness class on Wednesday May 13, 2015 from 6-7 pm at the Community Center.
