Manager’s Message
It is great to be back in beautiful, sunny and warm Surfside! I am very impressed with the significant changes that have taken place in the 18 months since I left Surfside. Projects such as The Grand Beach Hotel, Surf Club, Chateau, Marriott and Young Israel are helping to lift Surfside to a new level and will bring more visitors, recognition and revenue to the Town. The Harding Avenue streetscape, landscaping and lighting upgrades have vastly improved our bustling downtown business district. The recently completed 95th Street End project is a great improvement. Other infrastructure accomplishments for 2014 include the completed refurbishment of the Tennis Center and the construction and upgrade of municipal parking lots. It is also great to see that Surfside established a strong interest in the environment during the last year. Climate change, beach and dune nourishment, seawall retainment and storm drainage were all addressed in 2014. Most importantly, services rendered to the residents of Surfside continues at a very high level. The Police Department remains proactive and has increased its community relations efforts, special programs and initiatives and added more opportunities to dialogue with citizens. Residents of all ages benefit from the many Parks & Recreation programs, the Aquatic Center and the Community Center. The Public Works Department, Sanitation and Utilities are not only maintaining our infrastructure, but working to improve and beautify the Town. Kudos to our elected officials for the leadership they have provided and their dedication to making Surfside a wonderful place to live, work and play. A special thanks to all our employees for the hard work they do day in and day out. They make everything happen and are the best! Travel The World With Third Thursdays The Third Thursday series is back with an international flavor in 2015. The evening block party returns on the third Thursday of each month between January and April at Harding Avenue and 95th Street. Enjoy live entertainment, music and themes each month, with the sights and sounds of Cuba, China, India and Mexico. The popular food trucks will be on-hand as well as special deals for the whole family from participating restaurants and stores Launching the series on January 15, dance to the bongos and sharpen your domino playing skills at Havana Nights. February 19 will celebrate the Chinese New Year with an Asian-inspired party to kick off the Year of the Sheep. Bollywood Meets Surfside on March 19 will feature temporary henna and colorful performances for all to enjoy. Solid Waste Rates to be Discussed at Workshop Surfside Public Works Director Joseph Kroll will lead two Solid Waste Rates Workshops in January: Wednesday, January 14 and Thursday, January 22, both at 6:30 pm in Town Hall Commission Chambers, 2nd Floor. Start 2015 by Giving Blood The Surfside Police Department is hosting a blood drive in conjunction with the One Blood organization on Thursday, January 8, 2015 from 1 – 3:30 pm. Join Cub Scout Pack 320 Adventure is waiting!
Surfsiders have seen Cub Scout Pack 320 participating in local events such as the Memorial Day and Veterans Day ceremonies. The Pack is seeking new members and is open to boys from Kindergarten to 5th Grade. Cub Scouting includes camping, games, crafts and community activities. Pilot Parking Program for Byron Avenue Beginning in January 2015, the Surfside Police Department will implement a pilot residential parking permit program for the 9400 and 9500 blocks of Byron Avenue. The program will be re-evaluated after 90 days. Only residents and their guests will be allowed to park on these two blocks. The program’s goal is to mitigate the problem of workers, beach goers and others parking on these two blocks. For further information please contact Lt. Community Meeting On Film Ordinance The Town of Surfside is planning a community meeting to discuss the Town’s film ordinance. The meeting will also address the prohibition of all filming in the residential district. The meeting will be held in February. Watch for more information. Surfside Resident and International Opera Star Conchita de Antuñano
Conchita de Antuñano has thrilled audiences worldwide with her dramatic mezzo-soprano performances of opera’s classic roles and her impressive vocal range in concert halls. A native of Mexico, Conchita’s career has taken her to Philadelphia, New York, London, Milan and Munich before settling in Surfside in 2005.
“Surfside is a wonderful community. I enjoy living here. I do miss the old community center auditorium and look forward to when we have a venue for live music and singing productions,” she said. Conchita added that she would volunteer to assist in the planning and coordination of cultural efforts or music projects in the Town.
Conchita continues to maintain an active singing career, performing as a concert soloist, recitalist and recording artist. In addition to engagements already planned for 2015, she also takes time to share her knowledge and experience as voice teacher for younger singers preparing for auditions and recordings.
Conchita also offers singers in the area top-notch voice training for all ages and talent levels. At her Surfside studio, she provides instruction for opera, musical theater, classical singing, recordings, recitals and auditions. Born in Merida in Mexico’s Yucatán peninsula, Conchita graduated from the University of Mexico City with a degree in history. Singing since she was child, Conchita also completed formal musical studies at the Conservatorio Nacional de Música. She first performed Bizet’s Carmen at age 19 while still a student. Word of her talent traveled all the way to Philadelphia where she received a full scholarship to the prestigious Academy of Vocal Arts, a school that focuses solely on opera. She later continued her studies at the Juilliard School of Music in New York City. After winning competitions and auditions, she launched her career singing Bellini’s Norma and Verdi’s Il Travatore. From there, she found success at the major opera houses of Italy, France and Germany, becoming famous for roles such as Azucena in Verdi’s Il Travatore, Amneris in Verdi’s Aida and Amelia in Un Ballo in Maschera. In all, she has performed in 15 different countries. Working with her mentor, the late Maestro Giusepe Patané, Conchita perfected a transition to mezzo-soprano. She appeared with Plácido Domingo on the Maestro’s world premier recording of Mascagni’s Iris for CBS/Sony Classical. Back in New York, Conchita performed at Carnegie Hall and served on the faculty at Juilliard. In 2014, she performed at the concert hall of the Anderson House in Washington, D.C. In recognition of her outstanding contributions and dedication to the performing arts, her home state of Yucatán awarded her the prestigious Yucatán Medal. How did a world-famous opera singer who speaks five languages come to Surfside? Conchita’s only child, Carlos Uribe de Antuñano was born in Manhattan and grew up in Germany. During his many vacations in the U.S. he became skilled in our national pastime, baseball. He received a college scholarship offer from Barry University in nearby Miami Shores. He received a degree in economics and is now a realtor. Conchita moved from New York to Surfside to be closer to Carlos and to enjoy the tropical weather.

Officer of the Month – November 2014
On November 24, 2014, Surfside Detective Marian Cruz identified a possible suspect of grand theft from a hotel room. Through superb investigative techniques and interviewing skills, the suspect admitted to stealing $370 in cash from a handbag in a hotel room. Det. Cruz was also able to gain a second confession of an additional theft of $1000 in cash from another hotel room back in April 2014. Congratulations and excellent work!

Communications Operator Tameka Burnell is recognized for her exceptional efforts on the afternoon of November 24, 2014. A water main burst on 96th Street caused two lanes of traffic to be closed and required the conversion of the eastbound lane into a westbound lane to allow traffic in both directions.
Next, a fire was reported at the closed hotel at 87th Street, shutting down three lanes of traffic on Collins Avenue. All northbound traffic was diverted southbound onto Harding Avenue. Traffic was also gridlocked at 95th Street and Byron and Abbott Avenues. Throughout the events, Communications Operator Burnell handled continuous calls from drivers and residents caught in the traffic as well as dispatching calls for service – including an in-progress crime that resulted in two arrests. Register Your Pet with the Surfside PD The Police Department is providing special tags to be attached to the collar of your pets. The dog tag will have the Police telephone number and a registration number.

Major Public Works Projects Near Completion Biscaya
95th Street End
The Biscaya Drainage Project is now complete. The project began in September and staff worked diligently with minor delays and completed the underground work on November 7, 2014. The roads and properties on the island have been cleaned and materials removed. There is newly inserted curbing on properties that were originally damaged. The asphalt was placed on November 25.
The 95th Street End Phase 2 Project is almost complete. All of the concrete work, paver installation and landscaping is finished. The shower is installed and operational. The concrete benches, which will be located in the circle on the pavers will be installed in January, weather permitting. Foot traffic is now open to the public for access to the beach (see below).This project was completed on time and under the proposed staff budget.
This project will help alleviate some of the history of slow drainage in the area. This project was a great accomplishment for the Surfside Utility Department as all work was performed in-house with a savings to the Town of more than $100,000. Special commendation goes out to both the Utility Department (Hector Rodriguez, Harold Lacroix and Kenny Chaviano) and Public Works staff (Jose Nodarse) for their tremendous efforts in working to complete the project. The whole project was spearheaded by the Town’s Project Manager Randy Stokes!
The Benefits of Getting Social We all know the importance of social media and accept it as a part of our daily lives. How does this modern phenomenon relate to tourism and, in particular, Surfside’s reemergence into destination marketing? While the Tourist Bureau focuses on partnering with and leveraging our hotel and industry marketing organizations’ social media platforms, there is also a responsibility to assist the downtown district. Recent campaigns include the simplywSurfside and an all-out effort to support Small Business Saturday. On Facebook alone, there was a10,000 person reach. A Social Media component is now a necessity for all aspects of promotions, advertising and special events. Coming this year to the Third Thursday Event series is the “Surfside Circle,” an exciting way to connect, involve and reward you and our visitors. Now is the time to grow our fan base and followers. Holiday Sounds in Surfside
Ruth K. Broad K-8 Center music students brought holiday cheer to the Town employees’ holiday lunch on Dec 17. The carolers continued bringing the holiday spirit as they made their way through the downtown business district on Harding Avenue stopping at each business. Special thanks to Cine Citta Café for the gourmet pizza, Serendipity for the delicious ice cream, Publix for the bottled water and Rollin Pin for the variety of freshly baked cookies given to the singers.

Rambo Still Helping Homeless Dogs It’s been a year since Surfside lost its beloved Rambo, the lovable stray that roamed the beach. In Rambo’s honor, Susana Escayola has set up a Second Annual Rambo Memorial Fund to benefit homeless dogs. This year, she has chosen Almost Home Dog Rescue and Rehab in Vermont. They save unwanted dogs from around the country, most from Miami-Dade. Homeless dogs are transported to Vermont where they receive medical treatment and a forever home if they are not adopted. E-Readers Available at the Community Center Starting Jan. 19 The Community Center is offering e-reader devices available for loan to Surfside residents for daily on-site usage with a valid Community Center ID. The e-Readers can electronically access the data base of the Miami-Dade library system with a valid library card. Two e-Readers will be specifically set aside for children 12 and under. Visit the Town website or contact the Community Center for information on e-reader availability.
WINTER WONDERLAND AT COMMUNITY CENTER Parks and Recreation hosted their annual Winter Extravaganza on Dec. 14th. The morning was full of cheer and included visits from holiday characters, music, arts and crafts, face painting, and the best part of winter‌SNOW. Also, the cast of Frozen performed, delighting their happy fans.
