Surfing & watercraft are among the most popular recreational activities within Australia. Approximately 6% of the Australian adult population participate in surfing or bodyboarding, while an additional 8% use other types of watercraft*. Participation in these activities is generally considered to be safe, particularly compared to other coastal activities, they are not without risk, and tragically, injuries and fatal incidents do occur. In this brief, we examine mortality trends alongside the hazard perception and safety practices among surfing & watercraft participants.
These analyses facilitate a deeper understanding of associated risks and provide guidance and education on how to participate safely.
