SUQUAMISH OFFICE OF EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT VOLUNTEER PROGRAM
Welcome to Summer in Suquamish! Happy June! Or is it Junuary? The weather can’t seem to make up its mind. Either way the flowers are blooming and the air is fresh and once again we are looking forward to the events of this summer. Yes, that’s right, it is almost time for Canoe Journey and Chief Seattle Days! This years Canoe Journey will be a youth focused event, therefore smaller than last years. The Puyallup Tribe will be hosting this years canoe journey as a Youth Canoe Journey from July 31st to August 5th. The event called, “Power Paddle to Puyallup” is expecting more than 5,000 to attend protocol in Puyallup during the week long event.
What does this mean for Suquamish? We are the second landing, after Port Gamble, with an expected landing date of July 28th. The exact times will be determined by the Skippers and the tides closer to the date. We could expect close to 70 canoes to land on the shores of Suquamish and approximately 3-5,000 people to attend protocol. As in years past, volunteers will be requested to assist with various tasks including, food service, the information booth, trash pick-up, and gift making. Watch for sign-ups (out soon!)
