The DX400 is equipped with the latest Hyundai DX08 engine, which increases maximum output and torque by 21% and 19%, respectively, compared to the existing model, featuring best-in-class performance. In particular, the application of the electronically controlled hydraulic system (FEH) delivers op-
24-hour delivery to dealers throughout much of Western Canada, to help reduce downtime and keep equipment in the field productive. The facility features advanced integration with Komatsu’s global planning and warehouse management systems, updated warehouse layouts, automation and new equipment designed to improve efficiency and accuracy. The expansion also increases workforce capacity and strategically positions the Edmonton operation to support future growth as demand from Canada’s mining, construction and forestry industries continues to evolve. “Today we’re celebrating more than the opening of a new facility. We’re celebrating a long-term investment in the people and businesses that rely on our equipment, our dealer partners and our employees,” said Rod Bull, CEO, Komatsu North America. “The new Edmonton parts distribution center enhances our ability to deliver the right parts at the right time, helping customers stay productive while supporting future growth across Canada.” SP

It also supports the Human Detection System (HDS) function to prevent safety accidents. This function uses six high-resolution cameras and AI deep learning technology to identify people and objects
within a 6-meter radius, including wide-area radar to detect blind spots and alert of collision risk. The model also incorporates ergonomic design and digital technology to enhance driver convenience. A large touchscreen—1.5 times the size of the previous model— enables intuitive control of the equipment. Another addition is the digital key function, which allows remote starting and indoor temperature control via a smartphone app to reduce the hassle of preparing for work. HD Construction Equipment has recorded global sales of approximately 100
units to date since launching the next-generation Hyundai DEVELON model lineup in Korea and Europe last year. The company plans to solidify its lineup of large-scale equipment further and expand its market base through a new launch in the US market in March this year and the domestic release of a new 30-ton product in the second half of the year. The first DX400 customer cited superior power and fuel efficiency compared to the foreign equipment they had previously used as reasons for choosing the product, expressing satisfaction with the cutting-edge safety technology for accident prevention as well. “Quarries are an extreme environment with continuous high-load work, and this delivery signifies recognition of the overwhelming performance of the next-generation new model. Caterpillar diesel engine, power shift transmission and axles are key components in the DJB D250 articulated four-wheel drive dump truck, manufactured in England and introduced to B.C. markets in September by Finning. The truck is built in Durham, England by DJB Engineering Limited, headed by David John Brown, a design engineer who has specialized in four-wheel drive mechanisms. After some 20
years with manufacturers of construction equipment, Brown started his own business and a year and a half ago produced the first DJB truck. Nearly 200 have since been sold in Europe, Asia and the Middle East; North American distribution is now being developed. The DJB line is intended to match the trend to smaller-volume earthmoving jobs. It gives a contractor flexibility in the varying types of condition it can handle; profitability in the multiplicity of jobs it can do. The truck is particularly advantageous in adverse ground. Rated at 25 metric tons, 27.5 short tons, the D250 is powered by the 235 flywheel horsepower Cat 3306 diesel. The Caterpillar full power shift transmission (same as in the 980B wheel loader) has four speeds forward to 25 miles per hour and three reverse to 16 miles per hour. The two heavy duty driving axles, with planetary
final drives, are Caterpillarbuilt the rear nondriven axle is a heavy-duty tubular type. An air actuated, large diameter dog clutch connects and disconnects the trailer axle for four wheel and twowheel drive. Four-wheel drive is engaged automatically when the parking brake is supplied. The D250’s braking system is described as the ultimate in truck braking safety. Four separate braking systems (service, secondary, parking, and transmission) operate through 11 independent circuits. In event of engine stalling or failure, air reservoirs provide five full service and secondary braking operations. Leading axles have Caterpillar air over hydraulic, selfcleaning caliper disc brakes; the trailing axle has drum type. Wheels are fully inter changeable on all three axles. Look before you leap. That could be the official motto of Leo Patchett, owner/operator of Patchett Excavating Ltd. “I take a pretty careful, cautious approach to the business end of things.” But when it comes to the actual job, all-out productivity is the name of the game.
Patchett’s dump truck of choice–for both long-term value and day-to-day productivity–is the Volvo A25C. Based in Langley, B.C., Patchett Excavating has steadily grown since it started in 1979. “We do mostly on-site preparation and preload work around the Lower
Mainland,” he says. Patchett started out with two Volvo 860 trucks, and has progressed through five 861’s, five A25’s and now has upgraded to four new A25C’s with a fifth one on order. “I just don’t think there’s another dumper that compares in value to the Volvo

over rough ground at faster speeds with the flexible, rugged superflex suspension system. The chassis consists of two separate sections coupled at the centre to allow full 360 degrees lateral oscillation between front and rear plus 45 degree steering to either side of centre. Articulated frame hydraulic steering through twin rams has mechanical follow up and flow control to give the operator cartype feel and response. The 29-
foot long, unit can turn in a 24½ foot radius. The dump body is low profile with side and end plates angled to reduce impact damage and to give clean, chute-like dumping. The dump system is twospeed, 10 and 25 seconds, for controlled dumping and spreading while travelling and for normal dumping. Operators like the convenient controls, comfortable cab and low noise level. The D250 is a quiet unit due to its low-speed Cat engine;
low speed, large diameter fan; low gas velocity; rear mounted exhaust system; insulated rubber mounted cab. Dimensions are 29 feet long, 98 inches wide, 106 inches to top of body, 120 inches to top of cab. Weight empty is 16 metric tons, loaded 41 metric tons. Keith Ashton, North American representative for DJB, says the D250 and the 30-ton D300 will soon be followed by 20- and 40- ton models. SP

For us, the Volvo line is tops in its class.” “Then there’s the productivity. With the A25C, dumping and bringing the dump box back into position are a lot quicker. That means the cycle time is cut down on our jobs.” The volume of the box, at almost 18 cubic yards, is 15%
bigger than on the older model. Load capacity is 25 tons. Patchett’s 6x6 model offers Volvo’s high-performance diesel engine that’s direct-injected, intercooled and turbo-charged with a 251 hp output. The power-shift transmission is electronically controlled and fully automatic in high and low gear ranges, and the special suspension, high ground clearance and individually oscillating bogie and front axles make the A25C the ideal dumper for rough terrain. The variable hydraulic retarder saves wear and tear on the brakes. Service is also important to Patchett. “Because we don’t have a shop and don’t want to invest time and money in this area, good mechanics and good regular servicing are really important to me. That’s what we get from Wajax. Also, their salesman, Jim Ell, will work right along with you.” Patchett currently has his fleet of A25C’s deployed on a number of different projects. One is the provincial Ministry of Highways project to create a new Hamilton Road interchange on Highway 91, the East-West Connector, near
the Alex Fraser bridge. There, Patchett is hauling sand to preload the bridge abutments. At the Green Timbers Forest Park in Surrey, an artificial lake is being created as a recreational facility. There, one of his Volvos is at work carrying dirt away from the large lake site to a nearby spot where dikes will be created. In the Heritage Mountain residential development of Port Moody, his trucks have been busy helping to strip off the top soil to subgrade as part of the road-building process. Patchett has also put his Volvo trucks to work on the Annacis sewage treatment plant, the Delta port near Roberts Bank, the Tsawwassen ferry expansion and two area golf courses. SP

The 3-Piece High-Reach Attachment also incorporates a patented cross-cylinder structure, which reduces overall height in the transport configuration and improves access during tie-down procedures. New attachment stands serve as both storage stands and work platforms during attachment and removal. An optional hydraulic removable counterweight can also be removed and installed by one person, helping reduce labor requirements and the potential need for additional crane support.

This machine is well suited to indoor and outdoor tasks where the operator needs to access elevated work areas carrying heavy materials but does not require the larger platform of a scissor lift.

New HT30 Compact Track Loader From Hyundai HYUNDAI
Hyundai adds versatile medium-frame CTL to its North American compact lineup.
HD Construction Equipment Hyundai North America is introducing the 71-grosshorsepower (53-kW) HT30 compact track loader, which follows its introduction late last year of the 115-gross-horsepower (86-kW) HT38 CTL. With a frame size suited for a variety of landscaping, residential contracting, municipal and residential applications, the Hyundai HT30 compact track loader is available from the factory in any of three versions: cab with highflow, cab with standard flow,
and canopy with standard flow. The HT30 cab version has a rated operating capacity of 3,028 pounds (1,393 kg), and the HT30 canopy version has a rated operating capacity of 2,900 lb (1,316, kg). All versions can lift to a pin height of 8 ft. 1 in (2,464 mm). Operating weight is 11,141 lb (5,053 kg) pounds for cab versions and 10,448 lb (4,739 kg) for the canopy version. “The medium-frame HT30 gives customers across a range of applications the power, lifting capacity and versatility they
need without buying more machine than their jobs require,” said Jason Taylor, Hyundai’s product manager for compact equipment. According to Taylor, the number of and value of standard features on the HT30 set it apart from other competing models. Among the standard productivity-enhancing features on the HT30 are ride control, creep control, hydraulic quick coupler, return-to-dig, lift-arm float and auto-self-leveling. “These features increase productivity for newer and experienced operators alike,” he said. The spacious, one-piece, pressurized ROPS/FOPS cab versions also include as standard many features that contribute to operator comfort and productivity, including torsion suspension for a smooth ride, heat and A/C delivered through eight wellplaced vents. The heated, air-ride seat is also standard, as well as Bluetooth and the 8-inch smart touch display. “The operator is the most expensive ‘feature’ on the machine, and a comfortable operator is a more productive operator,” Taylor said. Also standard are the
guarded exterior LED lights – two front and two rear. The cab versions include an escort light that stays on for 30 seconds after shutdown to help the operator safely exit the cab and the worksite. Another important feature of this new CTL is ground access to all daily service and routine maintenance points. A PowerCore air filter and reversible fan help keep the engine free of dust and debris and running cooler for longer life, while a tilt-up cooling module enables easier cleaning of the cooling system for max airflow. “With these features, contractors can rest assured the HT30 will stay productive longer,” Taylor said. He noted that Hyundai’s industry-leading three-year, 3,000-hour warranty provides an extra measure of confidence. Sandvik Introduces Autonomous Electric Concept Drill Sandvik has introduced a fully autonomous, battery-electric surface drilling concept that demonstrates vision for the next generation of surface mining. Unveiled at Sandvik’s Future of Mining event in Tampere, Finland under the persona Sami, the company’s latest concept machine showcases how AI, enhanced robotics, electrification and digital connectivity can work together as part of an intelligent, mine-wide operating system to improve safety and productivity. “For years, Sandvik has helped define the future of underground mining through automation, electrification and digital technologies that have fundamentally changed how mines operate,” said Patrick Murphy, President Mining at Sandvik. “Our latest concept brings that same ambition to surface operations. By challenging conventional ways of working, we’re helping to create the next generation of safer, more productive, more reliable and increasingly autonomous mines.”
Built on a boom-drill platform, the concept machine has no operator cabin and operates fully autonomously. It carries its own drill bits, collar pipes and down-the-hole hammers onboard, while an integrated robotic manipulator autonomously performs bit changes, installs collar pipes and replaces hammers. It can also measure hole depth and deviation after drilling, navigate autonomously through the mine environment and continuously adapt its behavior by identifying, tracking and classifying people, equipment and other objects around it. This enables the machine to distinguish between dynamic and stationary obstacles and respond accordingly. LED matrix displays communicate the machine’s operational status to personnel working nearby. The concept also introduces a new level of mine-
wide intelligence. Connected to a continuously updated digital twin, Sami is managed through Sandi, Sandvik’s AI agent. Sandi assigns drilling tasks and coordinates activities across the broader mining fleet, while Sami autonomously plans and executes its work cycle, adapting to nearby equipment and changing site conditions. Operators interact with Sandi using natural language, intervening only when human judgement is required. In developing the concept, Sandvik looked beyond individual features to explore how electrification, autonomous operation, robotic tool handling and digital integration could be combined into a single system. Sandvik’s latest concept machine continues the company’s tradition of challenging conventional equipment design and exploring what
technologies come next for mining. Beginning with its AutoMine® Concept Loader in 2020, Sandvik has introduced a series of concept platforms spanning underground and surface mining applications, each serving as a proving ground for emerging technologies before they are incorporated into commercial solutions. MAGNA Builds HighProduction Niche Recent exhibitions have turned the spotlight on MAGNA, the relatively young but ambitious brand targeting large-scale crushing and screening operations. Just two years after its official unveiling, MAGNA is already gaining traction in global markets, positioning itself firmly in the high-capacity segment of aggregates production and surface mining. For Neil McIlwaine, MAGNA business line director, the journey so far has been about laying solid foundations, both in product development and global distribution, while responding to a rapidly evolving customer landscape that increasingly demands efficiency, scalability, and sustainability.
Building a foundation for scale “Over the last two years, the key focus has been to establish a strong product portfolio for larger production environments,” McIlwaine explains. MAGNA’s target
audience is clear: large aggregates producers and mining customers requiring highthroughput, heavy-duty solutions. That focus has translated into a growing range of crushers, screens and conveyors designed specifically for largescale operations. Today, the MAGNA portfolio includes around 17 models—spanning jaw crushers, cone crushers, impact crushers, a wide array of screens, and conveyors— with multiple variants available across diesel-hydraulic and hybrid configurations. Crucially, around 80% of the product range can be supplied in dual-power hybrid form, reflecting rising demand for more flexible and energy-efficient solutions. The push toward full electrification is also firmly on the agenda, with selected models earmarked for
fully electric ‘plug-and-play’ configurations on the product roadmap. “It’s very much marketdriven,” says McIlwaine. “Customer feedback, distribution input, and regional to industry requirements are shaping how quickly and where we transition to full electric.”

Distribution: a critical early win Alongside product development, MAGNA has prioritized building a capable global distribution network, one tailored specifically to the needs of high-capacity operations. Two years in, MAGNA has appointed 12 distributors worldwide, with half of those located in North America. The US market has been a particular focus, with six distributors covering key regions from Florida and Georgia across to Texas, the Midwest, and the West Coast up to Washington State. This has been complemented by strong representation in Australia—where Mineral Processing Solutions (MPS) provides nationwide coverage—as well as key ap-

MAGNA MT400C large cone crusher and MT6S heavy duty scalping screen at Hillhead 2026. pointments in the UK (Blue Group), West Africa, Southern Africa, and Japan. “The key thing was identifying distributors with the right expertise for larger equipment,” said Felim Óg Gildernew, Business Development Manager, MAGNA. “It’s not just about selling machines—it’s about understanding the application, supporting the customer, and delivering long-term performance.” This strategy has helped MAGNA quickly establish a foothold in major markets, particularly in Australia and North America, where demand for high-capacity solutions is strong.
A growing product identity While MAGNA initially leveraged larger products from the Powerscreen and Finlay portfolios to accelerate market entry, the brand is now increasingly defined by its own models. Among these are the MT130J jaw crusher and the MT400C cone crusher—two machines developed especially for MAGNA and designed for high throughput and demanding applications. The MT400C, which took center stage on the Hillhead 2026 stand, exemplifies the brand’s approach. Equipped with an MVP 450X cone chamber, it can deliver production rates of up to 700 tons per hour, depending on the application. “It’s an extremely flexible unit,” says Niall Duffy, Product & Technical Sales Manager, MAGNA. “It can operate in secondary, tertiary or quaternary crushing, accept an all-in feed, and ultimately replace multiple smaller units in a fleet.” That ability to consolidate equipment is a key selling point, particularly for cus-
tomers facing labour shortages and rising operating costs. Across the industry, operators are increasingly looking to do more with less—fewer machines, fewer operators, and shorter operating weeks, without sacrificing output. “We’re seeing customers move from five or six plant trains down to three, while maintaining the same production rates,” McIlwaine notes. “At the same time, they want to reduce operating days—from six days to five, or even four days a week.” MAGNA’s larger, more efficient machines are designed to enable exactly that shift. By delivering higher throughput per unit, they reduce the need for multiple machines, operators, and maintenance resources. “The biggest challenge in the market today is people— resource, knowledge, and availability,” he adds. “So customers are looking at consolidation and efficiency gains wherever they can.”
Case study A compelling example of MAGNA’s approach can be found at Park City Stone in Kentucky, USA—one of the brand’s earliest full-system installations. Previously operating a six-machine tracked mobile train producing around 350 tons per hour, the customer needed to double output to meet a new long-term contract. MAGNA delivered a four-machine solution comprising a M130J jaw crusher, M400C cone crusher, and two horizontal screens, integrated with an existing tertiary cone. The result? Production increased to between 850 and 900 tons per hour—more than double the previous output—while reducing the overall equipment count. Fuel efficiency improve-
ments were equally significant. The new hybridpowered primary crusher consumes around 30 liters per hour when operating on its standalone genset, compared with 40 liters per hour for the previous unit, despite delivering more than twice the throughput. The installation, commissioned in April 2025, has since attracted global attention, driving further enquiries from customers across the Americas.
Europe: opportunity amid fragmentation While MAGNA has made rapid progress in North America and Australia, Europe represents a more complex but promising landscape. “There are definite hotspots,” says Gildernew. “Scandinavia is a key focus, as well as parts of Eastern Europe and Central Asia, where infrastructure development and mining activity are driving demand.” The UK market also presents opportunities, particularly as larger aggregate producers increasingly consider higher-capacity solutions and target efficiencies. Currently, MAGNA’s business mix sits at around 60% mining and 40% aggregates—a split influenced by strong uptake in the Australian mining sector. Over time, Gildernew expects this to move towards a more balanced 50/50 distribution.
Sustainability through scale Sustainability is another key driver underpinning MAGNA’s growth strategy— but not in the conventional sense of simply switching to electric power. While electrification and hybrid systems are central to the roadmap, McIlwaine Continued on page 31

But the brand is now exploring more advanced digital solutions, including real-time system integration and AI-driven optimization. “Our goal is to move towards a more connected plant environment,” says McIlwaine. “Multiple machines working in sync, controlled from a single interface.” Future developments may include systems capable of linking not just MAGNA machines, but mixed fleets from multiple suppliers—addressing a common pain point in the industry. While timelines remain fluid, the direction of travel is clear: greater automation, reduced operator input, and improved overall plant efficiency.

Defining success So what will success look like for MAGNA? For McIlwaine, it comes down to three core pillars: a fully developed product range purpose-built for large-scale crushing and screening applications, a strong and targeted global distribution network, and a dedicated team with deep expertise in high-capacity applications across various industries. “We want a full MAGNA identity,” he says. “A complete product portfolio, supported by the right people and the right partners.” With further expansion planned across South America, Asia, and Canada—and continued investment in product development and digital technologies—the foundations appear firmly in place. As the aggregates and mining sectors continue to scale up and adapt to new challenges, MAGNA’s early progress suggests it is wellpositioned to play a significant role in the next phase of high-production-plant evolution. Doppstadt Shredder Helps Control Scrap Tire Mountain Giant scrap tire mountains presented a major logistical challenge for Brownsville, Texas. With the INVENTHOR 9, the city processes large volumes directly on site, reducing the need for external service providers. In Brownsville, Texas, large quantities of scrap tires had accumulated over many years. These stockpiles took up valuable space, created significant logistical overhead, and brought additional risks: tire fires are extremely difficult to control, while standing water inside stored tires can create ideal conditions for mosquitoes and other disease vectors to breed. At the same time, maintenance and repair costs were rising for the existing shredding technology, which had been in service for many years. Brownsville needed a solution capable of reliably processing large volumes of tires directly on site. The city was also looking

Detroit has announced that customers can begin specifying Detroit Gen 6 DD13 and DD15 engines in Freightliner and Western Star trucks beginning Sept. 1. The Detroit Gen 6 engine lineup is designed to meet EPA 2027 emissions requirements while delivering the fuel economy, reliability and performance customers expect from Detroit. “Customers don’t want to choose between proven performance and future-ready technology. BCTA Convenes Inaugural Dashcam Task Force Meeting The BC Trucking Association (BCTA) recently convened the first meeting of its newly established Dashcam Task Force, bringing together representatives from carrier and technology supplier member companies to examine the practical implications of new dashboard-camera legislation in British Columbia.
Clarifying Which Vehicles Are Covered One of the first questions raised by taskforce members concerned the scope of the legislation. While the weight threshold clearly captures conventional heavy-duty trucks and motorcoaches, members noted that clarification is needed regarding specialized and vocational equipment. This could include cranes, concrete trucks and other large commercial vehicles that may operate differently from traditional highway transportation fleets. Clear definitions will be necessary to ensure the requirements are interpreted and applied consistently across the province.
Balancing Recording Quality and Retention
Members also discussed the requirement to retain at least 72 hours of footage. Many existing fleet-camera systems can provide 72 hours of recording at a lower resolution or a shorter retention period when recording continuously in high definition. Requiring 72 hours of continuous 1080p footage could therefore require significant hardware upgrades for some carriers. At the same time, taskforce members recognized the importance of establishing a meaningful minimum standard. Without an appropriate baseline, operators could potentially install inexpensive cameras that provide limited image quality, reliability or evidentiary value. Members agreed that the regulations should balance the need for usable footage with the cost and operational realities facing fleets.
Allowing Flexible Storage Solutions The task force examined whether footage should be required to remain on a camera’s local storage or whether cloud-based storage should also be permitted. Many modern telematics systems automatically upload video and incident data to secure cloud platforms. This can preserve footage if a camera or vehicle is damaged during a collision and can notify carriers when a device is offline or malfunctioning. Cloud storage may also reduce the risk of footage being intentionally deleted through the removal or destruction of a local storage card. However, members operating in Northern and Interior B.C. noted that reliable connectivity is not always available. In these areas, sufficient local storage remains essential until a vehicle returns to an area where footage can be uploaded. The task force generally supported regulations that
focus on maintaining the required footage rather than prescribing one storage method. Carriers could then use local storage, cloud storage or a combination of both, depending on their operations.
Installation, Maintenance and Compliance Members emphasized that technical specifications alone will not ensure cameras produce useful footage. A compliant camera could still be ineffective if it is mounted incorrectly, obstructed, dirty, misaligned or malfunctioning. Snow, road debris, vibration and normal vehicle wear can also affect camera performance over time. The regulations should therefore provide clear guidance regarding installation, inspection, testing and maintenance. Cameras should be positioned to provide a centred and unobstructed view of the roadway, with appropriate consideration given to mounting angles and vehicle components. Members also suggested that regulators could consider comparing dashcam recording logs with Electronic Logging Device operating hours. This could help identify situations in which a commercial vehicle was operating while its dashboard camera was not recording as required. The task force further discussed whether vehiclespeed and GPS location data should be retained alongside video footage. Many commercial telematics systems already capture this information, and members noted that it could provide important context when footage is reviewed.
Addressing Driver Privacy Taskforce members reported relatively little resistance from drivers regarding forward-facing cameras, particularly among fleets that already use them and clearly explain how the technology operates.
Greater concerns were associated with inwardfacing cameras and audio recording. Members recommended that the regulations explicitly confirm that the provincial requirement applies only to forward-facing video and does not require inward-facing surveillance or audio recording. Members also emphasized the importance of transparency. Drivers should understand when recording occurs, what information is collected, how it may be used and who can access it. This is particularly important for systems that continue recording briefly after a vehicle has been turned off. Clear company policies, communication and education will be essential to maintaining driver trust and complying with applicable privacy requirements.
Establishing Rules for Access to Footage
The task force identified access and disclosure as another area requiring detailed regulatory guidance. Members requested clarification regarding which enforcement authorities may request footage, the circumstances under which it may be requested and whether carriers could be required to provide footage when their vehicle or driver was only a third-party witness. Other questions included how footage would be transferred between different camera systems and enforcement agencies, how much time carriers would have to retrieve and provide recordings, and whether responsibility would rest with the driver, fleet operator or technology provider. For cloud-based systems, drivers may not have direct access to recorded data at the

Right To Work The fact that I grew-up in Western North Carolina, plus having had both an independently-minded father and grandfather, practically ensured that I would never be a “union man.” My college experiences never caused me to lean left-of-center on the political spectrum, and to this day, I think a person is better served when others do not speak for him or her. I was born in a Right to Work state, and it has always raised the hair on the back of my neck when I have been told that I cannot do my job, or make money, because other people are having a strike about this or that. These are my feelings. I also respect the thousands of truckers who prefer the “union way.” When it boils down to it, we are all truckers, and that’s what matters. This chapter is truthfully one that I wasn’t sure I would include, but I am doing so because situations like this just should not happen! I really do not care who was right and who was wrong — these things should not happen. During, yet again, another college hiatus, I arrived around 0800 at a Greensboro steel distribution facility with a load of steel coils. Our dispatch office had alerted me that the plant might be on strike, so I wasn’t terribly surprised to find the entrance gate blocked by 15 to 20 striking steel workers. They refused to move to let me in the gate and I quickly learned that I would forever be labeled a scab if I went into the plant. Feeling scabby, I asked the gate guard to contact someone in the receiving office. Soon, a supervisor came out to let me know he had called the Greensboro Police Department to request if they could send some officers to help me get into the plant. It wasn’t very long before several police cars arrived, and like magic, the crowd offered some loud verbal protestations, but they eventually parted and I drove through the gate and into the plant. The supervisors and foremen were more helpful than any of the steel workers ever had been, because several of them climbed onto the flatbed and helped me remove my tarps and chains, and it took
less than 30 minutes before I was completely unloaded. They also helped me fold my tarps. Damn, just for crossing a picket-line? This was great! When I returned to my truck after washing my hands, one of the supervisors walked up to me and said that he didn’t know how I would get out of the building because the picketers had gone around the building and were now standing in front of, and blocking, the roll-up exit door. (I would have turned around inside the building, and gone out of the door I had entered, if there had been enough room to make that maneuver.) Judging the distance from where I was parked to the exit door, I guessed that I could be in fourth or fifth gear by the time I arrived at the door, so I asked the foreman to raise the door when I started moving. Sure enough, the door opened to reveal those workers defiantly standing there, and I was headed toward them at a fairly good clip. Of course, I still had room to stop if they did not get out of the way, since I would never consider running over anyone, but I didn’t even have to slow down because they scattered when they saw me coming. (It probably helped that I was driving a truck with an extremely loud 903 Cummins engine in it!) I’m not ashamed to admit that I am no bad-ass, and I would never have crossed that picket-line if I hadn’t been told that I was being prevented from doing my job. I will also admit that after I passed by the strikers, I did not stop at the stop sign at the end of the street, nor did I completely stop at any stop light as I made my way to I-40. I also didn’t let many cars stay alongside me very long as I drove east. Not that I would have wanted to cross another picket-line, but I am sure I would have done so if the need had arisen. Thankfully, I never had to do so again. The Fraternal Association of Steel Haulers, or FASH, was founded in the late 60’s, and it was an organization comprised of steel hauling owner-operators (O/Os). Most members had been represented by the Teamsters
Union, but FASH’s founders thought the Teamsters treated the O/Os like “red-headed stepchildren,” so they broke away from the Teamsters. The association’s members were known to use violent tactics to persuade other truckers to “park their trucks” when FASH called a strike. This FASH lesson has been included because the association caused me to endure several terrifying weeks of truck driving. Unfortunately, during one of my “driving sessions” during college, I had several unpleasant dispatches which caused me to traverse the Pennsylvania Turnpike from Breezewood to Pittsburgh and beyond. I refer to them as unpleasant because the FASH boys decided that one way to get other drivers to park their trucks was to intimidate them by dropping bricks and cinderblocks from the Turnpike overpasses. I was not going to park my truck, so I thought of all kinds of ways to protect myself from those window breaking missiles. I tried to arrive at each overpass while using every bit of the roadway, both lanes and both shoulders. I even tried to move into a different lane as I went under each overpass. It also stood to reason that I could not block the entire windshield, but maybe I would be able to at least pull onto the shoulder if I could protect my eyes when being hit. So, when possible, just before each overpass, I would cover my eyes with one of my arms. This wasn’t too easy while passing, or being passed by, another truck, or when in a lot of traffic, but I did it
when I could. This was, by far, the most scared-shitless driving I had ever done, and many “Thank You, God” offerings happened during those two weeks of terror. Drivers don’t always like it when law enforcement officers sit on overpasses, but during this time, everyone was glad to see them. The next time one of these FASH strikes happened, I was a terminal manager in Pittsburgh, and one of our trucks was going to deliver a closed-van load close to the Pittsburgh Airport. When the driver stopped at a red light several miles from the consignee, a fellow climbed onto the side of the cabover International and asked the driver if he knew there was a strike going on. The driver replied that he was aware that FASH drivers were striking, but he
was not on strike, so he needed to deliver his load. The FASH member told him not to come back to this part of town again and that he would be smart to park his truck. When the striker was standing on the side of the tractor, he purposely blocked the driver’s view of his side mirror, so the driver did not see another striker reach under the trailer and pull the handle on the fifth wheel. Yep, when the driver left the red light, the trailer unhooked from the tractor, slammed onto and off the tractor tires, and then fell onto the landing gear pads, which of course had been raised for travelling. When the cops arrived, the FASH members were so proud of what they had done that they had fled the scene and were nowhere to be found. The landing gears
were bent, so they could not be hand-cranked, so a wrecker was summoned to lift the trailer, in order that the tractor could get back under it. Well, those FASH bastards cost our company quite a bit of money on that episode. I wonder if they would have been proud of themselves if the trailer had become uncoupled after the truck had built up speed and had then run into a bus load of kids. A Fishy Mystery, Solved At Last! On page 20 of our August 2026 issue, we shared a funny fish photo from our archives. Published in our July/August 1986 issue, this image shows a photo of Supply Post owner Ken Kenward’s head, pasted onto a black & white photo of an unknown gentleman wielding his impressive catch of the day. Plot twist: the original fisherman contacted us, and now we know more of the story behind this amazing photo! Meet Tex Bussey, our mystery fisherman. Tex was a salesman for Zephyr Trucks and then later Dams Truck Sales until his retirement. Both Zephyr and Dams were regular advertisers with Supply Post, and this is likely how we came across the original
for the joke post. This impressive salmon was only the second fish ever caught by Tex. Weighing-in at a whopping 47 lbs, Tex and his catch caught the eye of a photographer in downtown Victoria, BC, eventually ending up in the local newspaper. Tex thinks he caught this beast in Becher Bay, in 1962 or ’63. In reference to the original caption from our archive, “Jim” and “Sam” were likely Jim Chase and Sam Gerwin, both employees of Zephyr Trucks and avid fishermen themselves. You can imagine the friendly rivalry going on between these guys! Fast forward to today, when Tex found a copy of Supply Post August
