TIMED ONLINE AUCTION – PLAN TO BID!

Tuesday, June 9th

Complete Dispersal for Ber-Nor Trucking Ltd. Featuring Equipment from Nap How Contracting Ltd. & JB Bassett Logging Ltd.

Begin bidding Saturday, June 6th! Assets located at the Weaver Auction Site in Rycroft, Alberta.

Something Old Is Something New!!

You have in your hands the first edition of our new single section format! After a long (Read: Decades) affiliation with the same printer, we made a decision to change printers this month. Part of our selection process left us with an option to combine our two sections into one larger one — still at the same

page count as other recent editions. This new format offers us a little more flexibility on the layout and MORE importantly — gives us a quicker turn-around from deadline day to distribution.

In the OLD old days, this process used to take a week and a half. More recently, it’s been about a 72-hour turn-around. However, from this day forward, our printed editions will be labelled and delivered to Canada Post within about 48 hours of going to press. It’s a big step for the paper. You’ll also notice some familiar faces have moved around a bit. For example, the

Foreman Equipment ad has been on the front of Section Two since the early 1980s, when John Foreman and my mother, Kathy Watson, arranged for the ad to go on what was THEN a brand new 2nd section. We are grateful that they’ve graciously accepted a new position on page 3.

Veldt Parts, formerly of our Section 1 back page, is now on page 23. Velocity Truck Centre is neatly placed on the back page, as usual. No doubt the paper will evolve in terms of which ads go where month-to-month, but as we’ve done for over 55 years, we’ll continue to provide the latest and best in the way of new and used equipment and industry news.

In other news, coming soon for PAID subscribers: we are adding a number of exciting new upgrades to our website, which will be avail-

able to logged-in readers. Features in the works include saved searches, regionalized listing prioritization, and a MASSIVE breakthrough in how you’ll be able to search for equipment on our site. You’ll have to watch these pages and our website over the next month or two to learn more. Come see us at the Nisku Energy Show or the APNA Truck show and we’ll give you a sneak peek at our new technology.

Lastly, we appreciate you mentioning the Supply Post or SupplyPost.com by name when making inquiries on equipment and parts. There’s lots of options these days, and we’re glad you use this 55year- old paper and our website to do your business. SP

Frontline Machinery Launches Frontline Washing Systems

The new Washing Systems division from Frontline Machinery combines dedicated washing expertise, modular system design, and a national service footprint to help Canadian operators reduce disposal costs, recover value, and lower barriers to entry.

Frontline Machinery has launched Frontline Washing Systems, a specialized division built to help Canadian operators take control of rising excess-soil and slurry costs with practical, scalable washing solutions and local support.

The launch comes as construction, aggregates, waste, and environmental projects across Canada face mounting pressure from rising hauling costs, tightening landfill and fill capacity, and increasing compliance demands. For many operators, excess soil and slurry are no longer just a disposal issue. They are a growing cost centre that can affect margins, schedules, and long-term site economics.

While soil and slurry washing technology is proven in international markets, Canada has remained under-

served. The challenge has not been whether the technology works. The challenge has been access to the specialized expertise, responsive service, and long-term support needed to make washing a practical option for Canadian operations.

and material recovery technologies, including soil washing, long before the category gained traction in Canada.

“We realized we needed to bring this technology into Canada and make it accessible, not just to one or two companies, but to the broader market,” said Daryl Todd, President of Frontline Washing Systems. “If it is not accessible, it is not going to help solve the problem we have on our hands in Canada.”

Frontline Washing Systems was created to close that gap. That conviction was shaped in part by years of watching European operators adopt advanced recycling

The new division gives Canadian operators access to dedicated washing expertise backed by Frontline Machinery’s established national support network. Its focus is clear: help customers reduce dependence on disposal, recover usable material, and build a more cost-effective path forward with systems designed around real operating conditions.

Frontline Washing Systems offers modular, scalable washing solutions that lower the barrier to entry for operators looking to bring washing into their business. Rather than forcing customers into large, fixed installations from day one, Frontline Washing Systems provides a more flexible starting point with systems that can be matched to current volumes, site requirements, and recovery goals, then expanded over time as needs grow. The result is a more practical path into washing and a stronger foundation for long-term site economics.

“Our focus is on giving Canadian operators a better way forward in a market where hauling, disposal, and material handling costs are only getting harder to manage,” said Martin Anderton, Managing Director of Frontline Washing Systems. “This is not about adding another product line. It is about building a specialized capability around a category that now demands more attention, more expertise, and more support.”

Anderton previously led Frontline Machinery’s Major Projects group and now oversees Frontline Washing Systems’ project delivery, technical teams, and service strategy.

Backed by Frontline Machinery’s service footprint, Frontline Washing Systems supports customers through three Canadian locations and employees based in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, and Quebec. That reach gives customers access to local, hands-on support from project planning through commissioning, service, parts, and long-term optimization.

“This market needs more than equipment availability,”

Anderton added. “It needs a team that understands washing applications, understands the cost pressures customers are under, and can support these systems in the field over the long haul. That is exactly why Frontline Washing Systems exists.”

With Frontline Washing Systems, Frontline Machinery is making a clear investment in a category that is becoming more important to Canadian industry. As operators look for smarter ways to reduce waste, recover value, and improve project economics, Frontline Washing Systems is positioned to bring specialized washing

support to a market that has been ready for it.

New 6040 Mining Shovel From Caterpillar

Building on a legacy of trusted performance, the new 400-tonne-class Cat 6040 next generation hydraulic mining shovel is designed to help customers address these challenges through productivity enhancing features, durability upgrades and system improvements that increase efficiency.

Mining operations today face increasing pressure to move more material efficiently while managing fuel costs, workforce challenges and machine uptime. The new design integrates more standard technologies such as Cat Payload, which measures every bucket load to help customers consistently achieve target truck payloads without overloading or underloading, boosting load-haul cycle efficiency.

To help customers reduce fuel consumption and extend component life, Hydraulic Optimization for the new 6040 features variable, on-demand hydraulic oil flow to reduce excess heat, conserve energy and prolong component life. Conventional systems operate at the maximum required cylinder flow and pressure, regardless of demand from individual circuits. Conversely, the 6040’s optimized hydraulic system dynamically assigns individual pumps or groups of pumps to deliver the exact flow and pressure that each hydraulic function requires. This makes the new 6040 up to 15% more efficient than shovels without it.

For greater performance and reliability without sacrificing fuel efficiency, the 6040

is powered by twin new Cat C32B engines with 1550 kW (2,079 hp) output that enable shovel operation or the ability to move the shovel off the face under the power of one engine. A true global machine, multiple engine configurations are available to meet U.S. EPA Tier 4 Final / Stage V emissions regulations without the need of DEF or China Nonroad Stage III emissions standards, equivalent to U.S. EPA Tier 2. When equipped with the optional oil change interval extension attachment, maintenance downtime is reduced through engine oil exchange intervals increasing from 500 to 1,000 hours.

The new 6040 features high breakout forces – 1201 kN (269,996 lbf) in face shovel configuration and 1123 kN (252,460 lbf) with backhoe – to prevent bucket stall when encountering tough materials, improving productivity. Its closed-loop swing system delivers fast cycle times and improves energy efficiency. “One of the first things our fieldfollow machine operators comment on is the shovel’s power and swing speed,” mentions Feddern.

Standard Operator Assist

– Enhanced Motion Control incorporates angle sensors on the linkage to calculate boom and stick positioning, preventing hard stops and metal-to-metal contacts. By reducing pressure spikes and shock feedback, the system improves operator performance, reduces fatigue and increases component life.

The shovel delivers efficient pass-match loading for a range of Cat mining trucks. It loads the 147-tonne (162ton) Cat 785 in four passes and offers 8-pass loading capabilities of the 327-tonne (360ton) Cat 796 AC.

To support safer, more comfortable operation and faster operator training, the new state-of-the-art cab includes a floor window to provide clear views of the tracks and 40% overall greater visibility of digging and loading areas. Offering low, 68 dBA interior operating sound levels, the new cab design features a new air conditioning system, ergonomic joystick controls and left-side-mounted monitoring and diagnostic tower complete with large, 254-mm (10-in) touchscreen, live sensor monitoring, and visual and acoustic fault warnings. Caterpillar’s patented three-seat design - fully adjustable next gen comfort seat, an elevated full-size trainer seat and laptop work desk, and fold-away auxiliary seat – facilitates in-cab training.

Standard Vision 360 integrates four camera views on the in-cab touchscreen display to give the operator a 360˚ surround view of the shovel, reducing blind

spots and repositioning and increasing safe operation. A new 45˚ hydraulically operated access stairway provides safe ingress and egress to the cab and features emergency lowering to ensure operation even when the engines are shut off.

Outside the cab, the 6040’s new hydraulic system helps to enhance operator productivity. Its unique five-circuit hydraulics allow for two cylinder motions, two travel motions and swing.

To help customers adapt to evolving technologies and future power options, the shovel’s new cab riser features integrated Cat electronics and an optimized electronic architecture. Standard ProductLink™ Elite boosts connectivity and increases the availability of machine re-

porting data. Plus, the design opens retrofit capability of Cat MineStar suite of technology solutions, including Fleet, Terrain, Detect and Health.

The new design opens the door for power agnostic operation with retrofit capabilities of an electric power module for the next generation 6040.

Built for demanding mine conditions, the new 6040 is engineered to last

with a target design life of at least 60,000 hours. The shovel is 2.25% heavier than the previous 6040 model and features robust structures and long-lasting heavyduty fixed-axle rollers and idlers that eliminate grease consumption. A new single line grease injection system paired with fixed pins architecture vastly simplifies the

Vermeer is expanding its trommel screen lineup with the new TR6500TX, a new tracked unit in the company’s extensive portfolio. The TR6500TX features a tracked undercarriage, a large hopper, a digital drum angle readout and a full-function remote control to help optimize jobsite productivity and efficiency. It is a powerful, versatile solution for material processing operations, including those in the compost, mulch and soil industries.

“We designed the TR6500TX for the professional operator who demands jobsite efficiency. It’s a machine that can be tracked, set up and operated by a single person, which is a huge advantage for many mulch and compost yards,” said Jay Van

Roekel, product manager for Vermeer environmental equipment. “We’ve built on our legacy of reliable trommel screens and added features that give operators the adaptability and control needed to produce a consistent, highquality end-product of various material types.”

Enhanced mobility meets proven performance

The key feature of the TR6500TX is its steel-tracked chassis, which provides onsite mobility without requiring a truck to relocate the machine. This allows operators to easily reposition the machine around a jobsite, leading to compounding efficiency gains throughout the day. Setup is quick and precise thanks to a digital drum angle readout and optional outriggers allowing a single operator to level the machine and optimize the drum angle for different material types.

The TR6500TX is powered by a 120-hp (90-kW) CAT 3.6L Tier 4 Final/Stage V engine and is designed for high-throughput applications. With a 20-ft (6.1-m) long, 6.5-ft (2-m) diameter quick-change tension screen drum, it can sort up to 180 yd³ (137.6 m3) per hour. Its drum speed can be adjusted from 0 to 25 rpm to accommodate various material types and moisture content.

For quick loading cycles, the hopper features a large capacity of 13.0 yd³ (9.9 m³) and a low infeed height of just 9.4 ft (2.9 m) at a 5° operating angle. The quick-change screen system enables operators to swap screens efficiently, optimizing end-product specifications with minimal downtime changing screens.

Ultimate operator control

Operators can control the TR6500TX from a loader cab using the included full-func-

tion wireless remote. The remote allows for adjustments to belt and drum speed, full control of radial fines and overs conveyors so operators can maintain screening quality as conditions change.

To help minimize dust and material loss in windy environments, the TR6500TX is designed with adjustable discharge conveyors that can be positioned closer to the material pile. An optional drum cover and overs conveyor cover is also available for further dust containment. For operations processing wet materials or seeking higher throughput, an optional dual brush system is available.

Built for efficiency and maintenance

For efficient maintenance, large side doors on the TR6500TX offer complete

grease distribution system with component count and grease line reduction to all pins. This substantially reduces the risk of line breakage, simplifies diagnostics and allows for more efficient grease distribution and flow control.

A rigorous hose audit for the new shovel’s design provides better hose organization and routing for streamlined service and improved field performance that delivers thousands of

ground-level access to the drum body and critical engine components. The machine also integrates with the VermeerOne platform, a telematics solution that provides real-time machine data to help operators and fleet managers optimize performance and stay ahead of maintenance.

operating hours without a major hydraulic leak. All service areas are accessible via anti-slip walkways, and its retractable service station offers easy access to coolant, hydraulic oil, slew gearbox oil, grease, diesel and engine oil. Boom mounted, the main hydraulic block gives technicians quick access to the swing drives, rotary joint and travel spool valves, while increasing available space in the superstructure.

The updated electronics infrastructure provides

The TR6500TX complements the existing Vermeer trommel lineup, including the trailer-mounted TR6400 and TR6450 models, giving operations the flexibility to choose between tracked mobility and traditional transport options based on their specific needs. SP

Unlock More Tonnage From Your Primary Crusher With Heavy-Duty Jaw Profiles

When primary crusher wear parts matter for the entire circuit.

Keeping a crushing circuit running at full potential isn’t simply adding more power or more machines. It starts with the primary crushers –and specifically, with the jaw crusher wear parts that set your product size, shape, and overall reduction ratio for everything that follows.

Lippmann heavy-duty jaw plates are engineered to do more than just crush the material. They’re designed as OEM wear parts to the same specifications and standards as Lippmann jaw crushers, delivering safer operation, improved product quality, and lower long-term cost per ton.

No matter what type of crusher you run downstream –cone crushers, gyratory crushers, roll crushers, or impact crushers – they can only perform as well as the feed they receive:

• The size of the material leaving the jaw directly affects your achievable reduction ratio in secondary and tertiary stages.

• Uniform product size from the primary reduces recirculating loads, protects liners, and keeps efficiency reduced to a minimum.

• Better controlled discharge also supports a more stable crushing ac-

tion in every machine that follows.

That’s why OEM heavyduty jaw profiles are such a powerful lever for better overall circuit performance, not just jaw crusher uptime.

Heavy Duty Jaw Profiles for Better Material Flow & Wear Life

Traditional jaw plates can struggle with challenging feed material, especially when there’s a lot of fines, slabby rock, or very abrasive material. This is where Lippmann’s heavy-duty jaw profile is different.

Ideal for Challenging Feed and Unscalped Material

In real-life applications, scalping is not always perfect –and sometimes there’s no scalper at all. Heavy-duty jaw profiles are highly effective when:

• There is no scalper, or the scalping process is not efficient.

• The feed material tends to break into flat, slabby pieces.

• You’re processing difficult types of materials with high fines or high abrasion. Because the jaw plate design allows fine material to pass quickly through the chamber, packing and bridg-

ing are reduced. Features like the uneven tooth pattern actively work to break slabs, so you get:

• Fewer blockages in transfer conveyors.

• Less risk of overloading secondary cone crushers or impact crushers with poor-quality feed.

• More consistent performance across all downstream types of crushers, whether you’re running gyratory crushers, roll crushers, or multi-stage cone circuits.

Built for Long-Term Performance and Customer Satisfaction

These heavy-duty jaw profiles are not a short-term fix. They’re a strategic upgrade for long-term performance:

• Better fines removal and optimized tooth height mean manganese lasts longer and wears more evenly.

• Controlled material size leaves the primary supports a high-quality product all the way to the final stockpile.

Even operation across abrasive materials reduces surprises and keeps the circuit stable.

Operations using these OEM profiles report strong customer feedback around:

• Improved shape and consistency of final aggregates – a clear driver of customer satisfaction.

• Reduced unplanned shutdowns because of blockages and packing.

• Lower overall cost per ton, thanks to better utilization of all crusher types in the plant.

In other words, the right jaw profile helps your entire plant deliver a more predictable, high-quality product every shift.

When to Improve Your Crushing Action

If you’re seeing:

• Slabby material in your discharge

• Frequent packing or pegging in the jaw

• Downstream cone crushers or impact crushers are struggling with poor feed

• Maintenance intervals are getting shorter as efficiency is reduced under tough conditions …then it may be time to review your jaw profile.

The QUICKCHANGE’s design reimagines filter cloth maintenance with an innova-

tive design that allows cloths to glide effortlessly in and out during replacement. Unlike

change-out time minimizes downtime and maximizes productivity.

Safety is a cornerstone of the QUICKCHANGE system. By eliminating the need for personnel to climb onto or inside filter presses for cloth changeout, the risks associated with working at heights or in confined spaces can be drastically mitigated. The streamlined process also reduces dependence on slow-moving overhead lifting equipment, further enhancing safety and efficiency. Filter cloths can be removed for quick cloth or filter plate inspection at eye level without the need to lift plates out of the filter press.

traditional methods requiring extensive manual labor or specialized lifting equipment, the QUICKCHANGE enables operators to perform maintenance at ground level in minutes — reducing the industry-standard replacement time of 10-20 minutes per cloth to just 1-2 minutes. This dramatic reduction in

Beyond speed and safety, the QUICKCHANGE delivers cost-saving innovation. Traditional systems require replacing filter cloths on both sides of a plate when one fails, but the QUICKCHANGE allows operators to replace only the damaged side, cutting material waste and long-term maintenance costs. A specially designed feed shoe protects high-wear areas around the feed hole, extending cloth lifespan and ensuring consistent, high-performance filtration.

“Efficiency and safety drive everything we do,” said Cory Jenson, Executive Vice President of Sales and Business Development at McLanahan. “Teaming up with Diefenbach—a pioneer in liquid-solid separation since 1907—we’ve created a game-changer. The QUICKCHANGE gets plants back online faster and safer, slashing downtime from filter cloth changeouts.”

New Recycling Impact Crusher

McLanahan has also launched its newest recy-

cling crusher, the Renew Impact Crusher. It is designed for the C&D recycling of asphalt, concrete, and rubble, as well as virgin aggregate crushing applications.

The Renew Impact Crusher has a feed opening of 36” x 52” that is designed to process 24” feed material with ease, producing a wide range of output sizes from 6” down to 3/4”, depending on application requirements. It features a 47” x 51” heavy-duty 4-bar rotor with a unique and maintenancefriendly hammer retaining system. The crusher utilizes robust hammers with a protruding leading edge to keep the gradation and production consistent as they wear.

The hammer profile also allows for less core waste by increasing hammer exposure, extending wear life. The crusher chamber has been engineered with optimized geometry to allow the material to be evenly distributed in both the upper and lower chambers, allowing for balanced wear, increased production and better gradation. Strategic access points and inspection doors

around the machine allow for ease of maintenance and reduced downtime for component replacement.

“McLanahan’s new Renew Impact Crusher represents a major step forward in productivity and cost efficiency for recycling and aggregate operations,” said Nick Ford, Director of Sales – Aggregate Crushing and Screening. “Through our experience and listening to our customers’ needs, we are excited to introduce the Renew Impact Crusher. The goal for this impactor was to provide a crusher that is easy to maintain, provides reliability, lowers cost per ton and is simple to operate.”

The Renew Impact Crusher allows for skidded or portable plant options. The portable plant option is compact and mobile, making it easier to transport from site-to-site without having to completely disassemble. This unit helps to complete McLanahan’s range of solutions for C&D Recycling. SP

Talking Tailgates

to Optimize ROI.

Efficient hauling practices are at the heart of every successful mining operation. Maximizing capacity with each load while minimizing maintenance requirements and unnecessary downtime leads to increased profits and a healthy bottom line.

Many mining and aggregate producers have found simply adding a tailgate to their haul trucks makes a significant impact on their overall efficiency. Tailgates aren’t standard on rigid-frame haul trucks from any manufacturer. However, aftermarket options are available from manufacturers specializing in off-highway truck customization.

Like any piece of equipment, adding a tailgate requires careful consideration for optimal results. Some benefits can be achieved with any old tailgate, but to truly enhance their overall operation — and ROI — producers should look for a tailgate with

features that align with their specific application. Let’s take a look at how tailgates can improve efficiency and what options are available.

Tailgate to the Rescue

For being a relatively simple piece of equipment, tailgates can have a significant impact on how and how much material loader-operators will fill. This underhauling is often unintentional, but usually results in loads that are 10-15% below rated capacity. Sacrificing 15% per load per trip is simply not affordable for mining and aggregate producers looking to remain profitable.

Hauling a half-full load costs relatively the same amount of money in labor, fuel and wear on a truck as a load filled to capacity. By allowing loader-operators to meet the truck’s rated capacity without fear of spillage, tailgates quickly and easily boost an operation’s profit-

ability. For example, a 70-toncapacity truck with a tailgate hauls its rated payload, which is nearly 11 more tons per load than a 70-ton truck without a tailgate. Underhauling costs operations millions of dollars per year. If a fleet of six trucks adds 11 tons to each of their respective 12 loads per day, an additional 792 tons is hauled daily. That equates to nearly $7,049 in profits if hauling aggregates at an average of $8.90 per ton. It’s like adding another truck to your fleet without the increase in fuel, maintenance or labor.

Even with a single truck, adding a tailgate can greatly reduce underhauling. A mining producer using a custom tailgate on its Volvo A40D articulated hauler was able to increase capacity 17% per load. Before adding the tailgate, the Volvo A40D averaged 31.48 tons per load. With the tailgate, loader-operators now average 36.7 tons per load.

Hitting the Target

Whether it’s increasing productivity or reducing downtime and freeing up equipment, moving material from point A to point B in fewer trips is important for maximizing productivity.

By increasing capacity with each load, the above mining producer was also able to reduce the overall number of trips back and forth with its VolvoA40D. This not only increased overall efficiency, but reduced wear and tear on the truck.

Additionally, tailgates further reduce wear and stress on trucks by providing the loader-operator a better, larger loading target. Tailgates allow loaders to safely dump materials in the middle of the body, rather than near the front, improving loading target, weight distribution and overall truck stability. Without the added benefit of the tailgate, loader-operators avoid spillage by placing

most or all of the materials toward the front of the bed. This loading technique ends up overloading and stressing the front tires, axles and hydraulic hoist cylinders of the truck, resulting in premature tire wear, body maintenance and potential axle and hoist cylinder damage.

Typically, rigid-frame haul trucks are designed to carry one-third of the payload on their front axle and twothirds on the back. Placing heavy materials toward the front puts excessive stress on the chassis, axles, front tires, suspensions and hydraulic systems. Front tires are designed to support 33% of the weight and when overloaded, rim damage may occur, or

worse, they blow. Sometimes tires can be salvaged, patched or re-treaded, but even repairs are expensive, costing up to 60% of their original cost, in addition to the labor associated with repairing the tire and equipment downtime. An optimized loading target, equalized weight distribution and reduced spillage means that trucks with tailgates can extend a tire’s service life by as much as 40% or up to 13,000

Continued on page 17

hours in some cases.

One thing to remember — even if a tailgate makes loading easier, that doesn’t mean loader-operators should overload. A 150-ton truck cannot haul 175 tons of material without operating outside of the OEM truck manufacturers guidelines; this can cause damage and safety hazards in addition to voiding the truck warranty. Squeezing an extra 25 tons in a load might seem like a quick way to bring in extra profits; however, repair costs far exceed the additional revenue if you blow a tire or cripple the chassis and axles. The goal of tailgates is to achieve the trucks rated payload.

Maximizing Uptime

Optimizing payload capacity and reducing tire and axle wear are only the beginning. The benefits of adding a tailgate extend beyond the truck to haul roads and the other equipment, as well. Anyone who spends their day in a mine knows roads are narrow, rough and littered with spillage, which makes them hard to navigate and poses risks to the trucks and other equipment operating at the site. All options for dealing with the challenges result in lost time or increased expenses. Road grading crews deployed to clean debris off haul roads equates to lost productivity and the added costs associated with the fuel, labor

and expense of additional equipment.

Navigating debris can damage tires as well as the truck’s suspension systems. In some large mines, more than 200 tires are replaced per month because of debris damage or overloading. Many

quickly add up. A tailgate enhances operations whether you’re hauling aggregates, copper, coal, iron, gold, oil sands or soupy, viscous materials. But to truly maximize profitability, certain design aspects should be considered before making a purchase decision, such as durability and versatility. There are a variety of tailgate options on the market. Finding the design that complements the specific quarry or mining operation is important.

businesses aren’t equipped to handle the negative impact that has on the overall profitability, especially since the cost of rubber has skyrocketed over the last decade. Most mining truck tires cost upward of $50,000 apiece, with some larger models topping out at $100,000 each. Combine those extra costs with downtime caused by the repairs and replacement, and the impact can be devastating. A global tire shortage for mining-class vehicles only compounds the problem with longer-than-normal wait times just to receive replacement tires.

Weighing the Options

Crunching the numbers, it doesn’t take long to realize the benefits of a tailgate

First and foremost, work with a manufacturer that engineers their tailgates for each specific make and model of truck and truck body. Options exist for rigid and articulated frames. Some custom manufacturers have even engineered models that bolt directly to the undercarriage of the off-highway truck. Quick disconnect options, fluidic seals or cushion pads, are customizations that are available and should be considered, depending on the application. Operators should look for designs that do not require any welding to the frame, as welding to the frame of an off-highway truck may invalidate the OEM warranty, while making sure that the brand they choose offers stability, quality and structural integrity.

How a tailgate opens is also important for efficiency and long-term durability. A tailgate that lifts, for example,

EvoQuip Celebrates 10 Years

EvoQuip, a global manufacturer of compact crushing, screening, shredding and conveying equipment, celebrates a significant milestone at Hillhead 2026, commemorating ten years since the brand was officially launched at the show in 2016.

EvoQuip made its debut at Hillhead with the introduction of the Bison 120 jaw crusher, a compact machine designed to simplify crushing operations for smaller contractors and recycling applications.

Since that launch, EvoQuip has steadily expanded its portfolio from a single jaw crusher into a broad range of compact equipment covering crushing, screening, shredding and conveying. Today, the EvoQuip line-up includes jaw and impact crushers, aggressive scalping screens, mobile conveyors and shredders, supporting small-scale materials processing across

provides increased efficiency over a model that drops down. A dropdown tailgate is sometimes slower when opening and closing and is more susceptible to damage from the dumped materials. These designs often rely on pins or hydraulic systems, and when there are more grease points, cylinders and joints, the risk of increased maintenance and failure exists. They might seem like quick, economical solutions, but dropdown tailgates often end up costing more for repairs and replacement in the long run and are simply not an option for large

five key industries: building and construction; quarries; agriculture and landscaping; plant hire and recycling.

Barry O’Hare, Business Line Director for EvoQuip, said, “Launching EvoQuip at Hillhead in 2016 was about listening to customers who wanted compact equipment that was straightforward to own and operate. Ten years on, the portfolio has grown significantly, but that original focus on simplicity and practicality remains unchanged.

Marking this anniversary at Hillhead will be a full-circle moment, given the role the show has played in the EvoQuip story from the very be-

ultra-class rigid frame mining trucks.

Ultimately, a lifting, scissor-style tailgate has fewer moving parts so there’s less potential maintenance. However, it’s important to ensure these few parts are tough enough for the job since not all tailgates are created equal. A tailgate won’t last long if it can’t withstand the breadth of material being hauled. Find a tailgate that’s built with durable materials, such as high-strength steel, and features strong components including steel alloy chains and fiber bushings

ginning.”

The EvoQuip presence at Hillhead 2026 features a new digital element, which provides visitors with interactive access to product information, application insights and a snapshot of the brand’s global reach over the last ten years. The stand also highlighted the broader support and solutions available to customers, including TRAC, a multi-sensor solution to improve screening equipment performance and durability and INNEX, a new digital brand to improve end user experience through consolidated tools and AI driven capabilities.

Alongside the anniversary celebrations, EvoQuip will raise funds for cystic fibrosis across the three days of the show. The initiative builds on EvoQuip’s Hillhead 2024 fundraising effort, which raised over £2,000 for cystic fibrosis charities, and continues in

that don’t require ongoing lubrication. Certain manufacturers design their tailgates specifically for durability, resulting in a tailgate that can take a beating but still lasts for decades with minimal maintenance.

Customizations to tailgates are also a way to tie them into the truck fleet methodology employed at any given site. Truck bodies frequently have sideboards that add height onto the sides for either added volumetric capacity or to keep material within the bed. In this case, having the tailgate built up to the height

memory of Cahir O’Hagan, brother of EvoQuip Business Development Manager Paul O’Hagan, who passed away from the condition in 2023.

Barry O’Hare added, “Hillhead has been part of the EvoQuip story since day one,

of the sideboards creates a unified height around the entire bed, as opposed to a high-sided body with a low-sided tailgate.

Adding cushion pads to a tailgate will soften the blow when it is raised and lowered in harsh worksite conditions. When operations have extremely bumpy haul roads, or when mining underground, the cushion pads minimize noise and increase the tailgate service life and other truck components.

and reaching ten years at the show provides an opportunity not only to reflect on how far the brand has come, but also to recognise the people and communities connected to it. Supporting a cause that has a direct and very personal link to the EvoQuip team is an important part of that, and we’re proud to continue that effort while looking ahead to the next chapter of the brand.” SP

hooks on either side of the base of the flange intercept a corresponding tag on the tailgate, allowing the tailgate to pivot inward as the sidearm and over-center locking mechanism compressively lock the rear tailgate into place. This creates a water-tight seal that contains liquid materials within off-highway truck bodies or roll-off containers.

Operations that haul large amounts of wet material arguably need a tailgate more than any other operation that uses off-highway haul trucks. In these applications, a tailgate with a fluidic seal can create a near-perfect seal, resulting in minimal fluid leakage during transport. Few manufacturers can contain 100% of the liquid material, but manufacturers with years of experience have engineered designs that can contain up to 99.5% of wet materials, which is invaluable for specific applications.

For operations that require a 100% positive seal, there are specialty tailgates available from select manufacturers. These designs build up the rearmost portion of the truck body or container to create a cohesive flange from which the tailgate compresses. Two

Finally, make sure the tailgate lifts high and fast enough to get out of the way before material starts to unload. The last thing you want is the tailgate to hold back the material during dumping rather than allowing it to flow freely out of the back of the truck body. Fast dumps lead to increased efficiency and productivity. Materials left behind in the bed or stuck in grease points damage hinges and overall structure, and the amount of carryback reduces the volume of the next load.

Optimizing ROI

Increasing volume, reducing maintenance and maximizing hauling efficiency — for a simple piece of equipment, a tailgate can sure make a big difference. Six 100-ton-capacity trucks with tailgates hauling ore could result in approximately $10,700 in additional profits per day. Even with the average tailgate cost between $22,500 to $30,000 — based on the size

of haul truck and options chosen — a producer purchasing six tailgates for his 100-ton truck fleet would see a complete ROI on a tailgate project purchase in less than 17 days with those numbers. And that’s based on profit alone. Factor in additional fuel and tire cost savings associated with the use of tailgates on a truck fleet and the numbers really start to add up. Pay for tailgates once and reap the benefits for the truck fleets lifetime.

The challenge is what comes with it. Embedded boulders, harder rock intrusions, and rocky overburden mix at the face, and once that mixed material enters the loader bucket, it moves through every downstream stage: haulage trucks, preparation plants, crushers, screens, and wash circuits. Every ton of hard waste rock that makes it past the loading stage costs money at each one of those steps and adds nothing to the final product.

The good news is that soft ore and hard waste rock have a defining physical difference that can be exploited right at the point of loading: one can be crushed with relatively low force; the other cannot. An ALLU screening and crushing bucket mounted on an excavator or wheel loader takes advantage of exactly this contrast. By processing the material in the bucket itself, soft ore is broken to specification and passes through; hard rock is retained and left behind. The separation hap-

pens where it matters most: before the waste rock leaves the mining cell.

The Reality of Soft-Rock Mining: It Is Rarely Pure

Coal seams, bentonite deposits, and phosphate beds are almost never perfectly clean. They are interlayered with harder rock bands, penetrated by dykes, capped by rocky overburden, and studded with boulders. During blasting and excavation, these hard rock fragments break free and fall into the same dig zone. Without selective processing at the face, they end up in the same bucket.

The scale of this contamination problem is significant. Coal mine waste rock (CMWR) is among the world’s most substantial streams of industrial solid waste. A study in China estimated 4.5 billion tons of coal mine waste rock have accumulated in more than 1,700 waste dumps, and more than 315 million tons of coal mine waste rock are generated every year from

underground coal mining operations.

How Hard Waste Rock Harms the Soft-Rock Mining Process

When hard rock contaminates a soft-ore stream, the damage is not limited to one stage of the operation. It compounds across the entire production chain:

rock rejected at the preparation plant must be stockpiled somewhere. Coal mine waste dumps are a significant and long-lasting environmental liability. Sulphide-bearing waste rock generates acid mine drainage (AMD); waste pile fires from spontaneous combustion of carbon-bearing material are a documented risk. The US Abandoned Mine Reclamation Fund – financed at 35 cents per ton of coal mined from the surface, 15 cents per ton of coal mined underground, and 10 cents per ton of lignite at the time –had collected nearly $6 billion by 2000, reflecting the sheer scale of historic mine waste remediation costs.

Processing water and chemical use: Wash plants and beneficiation circuits that process rock-contaminated

ore consume more water, more chemical reagents, and more energy per ton of clean product than those receiving uncontaminated feed. In bentonite processing in particular, maintaining consistent product rheology and purity is highly sensitive to hard mineral contamination.

Crush the Soft, Remove the Hard – at the Bucket

Crushing and preparation plant equipment: Preparation plants for coal and bentonite are sized and configured for soft material. Hard rock boulders cause accelerated wear on crusher liners, screen panels, and wash plant components. Unplanned downtime for repairs and part replacements is one of the costliest consequences of rock contamination, as it halts the entire production circuit, not just one machine.

Product quality and calorific value: In coal mining, hard rock dilution directly lowers the average calorific value (CV) of the product. A shipment that should grade at 6,000 kcal/kg may test at 5,600 kcal/kg once dilution rock is factored in. For customers operating under strict quality specifications, this is either a contractual breach or a commercial penalty, sometimes both.

Haulage capacity and fuel consumption: Every hard rock boulder hauled to the preparation plant consumes truck payload capacity, fuel, and tire life, all for material that will be rejected downstream and then hauled again to a waste dump. Each ton of waste rock that could have been separated at the face is instead being moved twice.

Waste dump volume and environmental liability: Hard

This is the key operational insight: the hardness contrast between soft ore and hard waste rock is not a problem to be managed downstream, it is a separation mechanism to be exploited upstream. The ALLU bucket uses it as one.

Configurable output sizes of 50 mm, 75 mm, 100 mm, or 150 mm allow operators to match bucket settings to preparation plant feed requirements. Wet, sticky, or partially frozen material – a common condition in coal and bentonite operations – is handled without clogging. The M-Series is rated for

ALLU’s M-Series and DHSeries Transformer screening and crushing buckets are designed for exactly this scenario. Mounted on an excavator or wheel loader operating directly at the face, the bucket processes material in a single, continuous cycle: the rotating cutting drums crush soft rock such as coal, lignite, bentonite, soft phosphate to a specified output size, while hard rock that cannot be crushed at those force levels is retained inside the bucket and left behind at the face, or deposited separately.

Doppstadt Introduces New SWS 6 Spiral Shaft Separator

Equipped with a hopper and tracked chassis, the new SWS 6 from Doppstadt focuses on maximum separation precision and can be used as a stand-alone machine or as a key component in the Mobile Modular Processing Concept (MMPC).

With the SWS 6, Doppstadt is taking the separation of challenging material flows to a new level. The spiral shaft separator is designed as a self-sufficient functional machine and offers users a maximum degree of flexibility and independence. At IFAT (May 4-7), Doppstadt demonstrated the practical advantages the SWS 6 offers, highlighting how the new technology enhances cost-efficiency in processing lines.

At the heart of the SWS 6 lies Doppstadt’s patented spiral shaft technology. “Due to its unique spiral design, the system is self-cleaning and completely eliminates wrapping and clogging,” explained Moritz Müller, Product Manager at Doppstadt. “This design principle ensures continuous material

separation without maintenance-related interruptions.

The SWS 6 delivers reliably stable screening results even in complex waste streams and can be optimally combined with shredders or other upstream and downstream equipment.”

Equipped with a robust tracked chassis, the machine achieves a new level of operational flexibility.

“We have consistently tailored the SWS 6 to the real-world conditions found at recycling yards, landfills, or construction sites with uneven ground,” said Müller. “The track system makes it ideal for use on unpaved surfaces. A decisive practical advantage: the machine can be moved quickly around the yard via remote control – without the need for an additional

loader or towing vehicle. This provides operators with a highly mobile system that is ready for immediate use and can be flexibly positioned at changing locations.”

To maximize value, the SWS 6 utilizes the physical advantages of the spiral shaft: by stretching the material across the shafts, a perfect foundation for integrated air classification is created. This allows light fractions to be separated reliably without the need for an additional, external machine for this process step. This saves space and reduces the complexity of the processing line.

In addition to standalone use, the SWS 6 is designed for ideal integration into system environments. At IFAT, Doppstadt pre-

excavators from 50 to 120 tons and wheel loaders from 35 to 70 tons, suitable for large-scale open-cast operations; the DH-Series covers excavators from 18 to 45 tons and wheel loaders from 8 to 30 tons for more selective or constrained environments.

The Compounding Benefits of Getting Separation Right at Source

Removing hard rock at the loading stage rather than at the preparation plant, or not at all, triggers a cascade of operational improvements:

Cleaner feed to the preparation plant: When the bucket screens out hard rock at the face, the material delivered to the crusher, wash plant, or screen is already partially sized and freed of oversized contaminants. The preparation plant runs on material it was designed for, reducing wear rates, maintenance intervals, and unplanned downtime.

Consistent product quality: For coal, a cleaner feed means a more consistent calorific value and lower ash content per ton. For bentonite, it means more uniform rheology and mineralogical purity. Both translate directly into stronger market positioning and fewer quality-related penalties or rejections.

Fewer machine moves and less double-handling: By combining screening, crushing, and loading into one bucket cycle, ALLU eliminates the need for a separate scalping screen or additional mobile plant at the face. Material that would otherwise be loaded, hauled, rejected, and re-hauled as

waste is never loaded in the first place.

Smaller waste footprint:

Hard rock left at the dig face, rather than transported to a dedicated waste dump, reduces the volume and footprint of waste infrastructure. Less waste to manage means lower long-term environmental liability, reduced monitoring costs, and a smaller closure obligation.

Lower fuel and tire costs per ton of product: A truck loaded with clean, crushed coal carries revenue material on every ton of its payload. A truck loaded with mixed coal and hard rock is discounting part of every cycle. The improvement in effective payload utilization reduces the number of cycles needed per ton of product with proportional savings in fuel, tires, and machine hours.

Compliance and ESG positioning: As regulatory scrutiny of mine waste management intensifies and as ESG reporting frameworks require more detailed disclosure of waste volumes and environmental liabilities, the ability to demonstrate reduced waste generation at source becomes a material business advantage.

The Right Place to Separate Is the First Place

The mining industry’s productivity challenge is not, at its core, a processing challenge – it is a materials handling challenge. Loading hard rock that should never have been loaded in the first place costs money at every stage it travels through. The preparation plant pays for it in wear. The haulage fleet pays for it in wasted payload and increased fuel consumption. The environment pays for it in waste dump volume. The balance sheet pays for it in all three.

For operators of coal, bentonite, shale, and other soft-rock mines, the practical implication is clear: the separation from waste rock should happen at the face – at the first point where a physical difference between the two materials can be exploited. The ALLU screening and crushing bucket makes that separation possible in a single loading cycle, without additional equipment, without additional passes, and without sending unwanted material into a system that was never designed to handle it. Metso Launches New Flip-Flow Screens For Fine Dry Screening

Metso has launched the Metso GFF Series flip-flow screens, engineered for efficient fine dry screening of difficult and often moist materials.

The rugged design delivers stable classification in demanding conditions and enables finer cut sizes required in applications such as sand manufacturing in aggregates segment and high-pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) based closed circuits in mining segment. By strengthening the screening stage, the GFF Series helps customers improve energy efficiency, reduce circulating loads and lower water usage, enhancing productivity in fine product making and comminution processes.

The improved screening performance delivers value in two key areas. In HPGR and downstream grinding circuits, finer and more accurate classification reduces circulating loads and improves overall energy efficiency. In fine aggregate production, high screening efficiency minimizes crosscontamination, supporting consistent product quality, for example in sand manufacturing.

Stable dry screening with improved water efficiency

The GFF Series combines hybrid flip-flow and conventional deck technology with high excitation forces to deliver precise screening in both dry and wet conditions. It achieves cut sizes down to 0.5 mm in dry applications and 0.3 mm in wet applications, while

Beyond mining and aggregates, large-scale fine dry screening also opens new opportunities in applications such as biomass, fertilizers, construction waste recycling and industrial minerals.

More efficient HPGR circuits

Classification plays a critical role in HPGR flowsheets, influencing energy consumption, circulating loads and productivity. The GFF Series widens the technical envelope for fine cut sizes and throughput, enabling more accurate classification ahead of downstream grinding. The resulting finer particle size distribution improves the efficiency of the entire circuit.

minimizing blinding and pegging. Compared with traditional screening solutions, this results in higher efficiency, reduced process water demand and less energy wasted in downstream grinding, enabling more efficient flowsheet design.

Practical field performance has been a key design driver. The flip-flow deck’s anti-blinding behavior reduces unplanned stoppages, while straightforward access, rugged construction and easy serviceability support faster maintenance, higher availability and a lower total cost of ownership.

“Our customers have been asking for a high-performance screen that can handle fine, difficult and often moist materials without forcing them into wet screening,” said Michael Gyberg, Vice President, Screening Equipment Solutions. “The GFF flip-flow delivers the finer, more accurate cuts needed to support HPGRs and the overall comminution process, making the screen a true enabler of circuit performance.”

“The much finer screen cuts achieved with flip-flow technology are a major advantage for future HPGR circuits,” said Stefan Sakendorf, Director, HRC products. “More accurate classification allows a greater share of the workload to be handled by energy-efficient HPGRs and strongly supports the implementation of highly efficient HRC™e–Vertimill circuits.”

Eagle Iron Works Launches Hawk Fines Recovery Plant

Eagle Iron Works has expanded its end-to-end washing equipment line with the introduction of the Hawk Fines Recovery Plant, a compact yet powerful solution designed to capture fine particles down to 400 mesh from process water in aggregate waste streams.

The Hawk delivers a dripfree, stackable solids product, making it an efficient way to recover material that would otherwise be lost to the settling pond. It can function as a standalone recovery unit or serve as the first step in a larger tailings management system, seamlessly integrating with additional liquid-solid separation equipment. Beyond its versatility, the Hawk Fines Recovery Plant brings a range of operational advantages. By removing more solids before they reach the settling pond, producers can significantly reduce pond cleanout frequency, lowering both labor and equipment costs. The recovered fine solids can even be repurposed or sold for use in pond lining or as backfill material, trans-

across six villages.

Villages including Gümüşkol, Katrancılar, Söğütlü, Küçükilyaslı, Gedikler, and Karacaömerli now rely on solar-powered infrastructure that delivers uninterrupted water supply without the burden of electricity costs. By removing recurring energy expenses for pumping water, the project has eased financial pressures on households and improved long–term water security.

What makes this initiative stand out is its extension of renewable energy beyond mine operations and into surrounding rural infrastructure. Instead of focusing solely on on-site energy use, Kışladağ Gold Mine directed solar investment to where it could meet critical community needs. The result: reduced fossil fuel dependence, zero electricity cost for water pumping, lower carbon emissions, and sustained economic relief for communities.

The project includes 125 kW of installed solar capacity dedicated to powering village water wells — an effi-

forming what was once a waste product into an added source of revenue.

The Hawk also helps operations achieve more sustainable water use. By preparing the waste stream for downstream processing in Thickeners or Filter Presses, it supports water recycling, a major benefit for operations in regions where water is limited and/or costly.

Built with durability and precision in mind, the Hawk features a Sump, Pump, Hydrocyclones, and Dewatering Screen in a modular design that’s easy to install and maintain. Material enters the Sump where it is pumped to the Hydrocyclones. Here, the ultra-fine particles are separated and discharged onto the Dewatering Screen for moisture removal. The result is a dripfree, conveyable product and clearer process water that can be reused or sent for further treatment. This process makes the Hawk Fines Recovery Plant a smart addition to any operation focused on efficiency, recovery and sustainability. SP

cient, scalable configuration that can be replicated easily in other rural or industrial contexts. Its modular nature means similar communities can adopt the model without high capital costs or complex infrastructure upgrades.

A key pillar of the project’s success has been active community engagement. Village headmen (muhtars) and local stakeholders helped determine system capacities based on population, subscription numbers, and actual water consumption patterns. This hands-on involvement ensured that each installation met real community needs while fostering a sense of ownership.

By eliminating electricity costs, reducing emissions, and ensuring resilient water access, the solar-powered water initiative delivers a powerful combination of environmental stewardship and social value. It demonstrates how targeted renewable energy investments can uplift communities while advancing broader sustainability goals.

Unique ABG Screed Delivers High Performance

Winning a prestigious industry award requires more than meeting specifications. It demands careful planning, proven processes, an experienced crew and the right equipment.

“The best contractors don’t just meet the standards – they go beyond them,” said Thomas Wilson of Andale Construction, based in Wichita, Kansas. “Every project presents unique challenges that must be met head-on.”

Andale did exactly that while placing more than 1 million square feet of Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC) in 22 days on the Embarcadero Gateway Building jobsite in Laredo, Texas. The project included unique geotechnical challenges, which Andale overcame with the help of an innovative developer, Farias Development, LTD., and the geo-technical expertise of Howland Engineering and Surveying Co. Inc. The team was one of the first to use RCC in Laredo, Texas.

The efforts paid off, as the group earned the Gold designation in the RCC (industrial/

commercial) category of the American Concrete Pavement Association (ACPA) Excellence in Concrete Pavement Awards. ACPA, founded nearly six decades ago, is a federation of contractors, cement materials manufacturers, equipment manufacturers/distributors, and other industry stakeholders who act as the voice of the concrete paving industry.

Andale found a distinct advantage in using an ABG 8820 paver equipped with a high-compaction VDT-V 89 double-tamper vario screed – a patented design unique to Ammann’s ABG products.

Why Pre-Compaction Matters

RCC behaves more like aggregate base than plastic concrete, making early mechanical energy critical. A tamper screed provides that

energy. “It delivers immediate, deep compaction and reduces the number of roller passes required,” Wilson said.

ABG developed the double-tamper screed to provide even more pre-compaction and a high-quality surface.

“With a double-tamper, the material is compacted twice before the screed leaves it behind,” Wilson said. “We’re achieving up to 98% pre-compaction, and the ABG screed is the reason why. We tested competitive systems and didn’t find another paver and screed combination that could consistently reach that density while paving a 6-inch to 10-inch mat.”

How Double-Tamper Technology Works

Double-tamper screeds strike the material twice before it reaches the baseplates, delivering 5% to 7% higher

pre-compaction than singletamper designs. Achieving up to 98% density behind the screed significantly reduces roller passes, fuel use, emissions, equipment wear – all while improving smoothness and overall quality.

The first tamper redistributes material and begins compacting the mat. The second enhances density and uniformity. By the time the material reaches the baseplates, it is already compacted and leveled. The baseplates provide the

finished, smooth mat surface.

This technology has proven effective for asphalt courses, granular materials, RCC and cement-bound materials – especially in applications where traditional compaction is difficult.

On The Jobsite

On the Laredo jobsite, density up to 98% was registered on the 7-3/4”-thick RCC mat before rollers even hit the material. The paver was followed by a 10-ton roller.

Pre-compaction by the unique ABG double-tamper system eliminates passes of the roller – the number varies from one job to the next – which lowers costs and minimizes the potential for surface damage. On average, the ABG paver reduces a minimum of two paver passes when compared to the other available pavers with “highdensity screeds,” Wilson said. The paver is able to place extremely thick lifts because

the pre-compaction provides such deep density.

On some jobs, the high level of pre-compaction has allowed Andale to use smaller, more cost-effective rollers instead of larger models.

Smoothness and Joints

Achieving smoothness when placing RCC is a unique process. With asphalt, there are multiple lifts of mix – and multiple opportunities to iron out bumps. RCC offers only one opportunity, in the form of a single thick pass, which makes subgrade preparation and pre-compaction crucial.

RCC has zero slump and historically wasn’t finished. Modern RCC is troweled and finished with a broom. Andale prefers to

use ACEiT Industries Blue as a finishing aid when troweling before applying the broom finish.

Andale utilizes ACEiT Industries SF-200 additives in the RCC mix when fresh-joint paving. The additive delays mix set times and improves workability, compaction and finishing. For construction joints, Andale over-paves by 6” and later saw-cuts a new edge – a practice Wilson calls “cheap insurance” to ensure structural integrity.

Joint work is made significantly easier with the VDT-V 89 screed, which features a variable width and an advanced crown profile screed that will break 10º +/- in the wings.

“It’s the Cadillac of screeds,” Wilson said.

Cost Savings Are Common With RCC When Compared to Conventional Concrete

Andale is a pioneer in modern RCC, having offered the application for more than 15 years.

“When we first started placing RCC, most customers hadn’t heard of it,” Wilson said. “We had to offer warranties to convince them to try it. When we had the opportunity to pave a project for a customer, we made sure to place a quality product – no matter what. In this industry your reputation is everything. Most of our customers are repeat customers.”

In those early years, and even to this day, price is what often convinces the customer to consider RCC. “The lower cost gets their attention, and then we have an opportunity to educate,” Wilson said.

Wilson said RCC is usually more affordable due to:

• Lower overall material expenses

• Reduced labor through the use of a paver instead of traditional concrete placement equipment

• No rebar requirements

• Faster curing and tighter schedules

The savings add up. “The

use of RCC on the (awardwinning) Laredo project resulted in savings of 10-17% compared to traditional concrete construction,” Wilson said. “Cost savings are common, and on large projects it can reach millions.”

Specialized Concrete Plants Required For RCC

“RCC can’t be made in your normal dry-batch concrete plant down the street,” Wilson said. “Because it’s such a dry mix, RCC requires a pugmill to efficiently mix at the production rates required for placement.”

Mike Conley of Ammann sees the RCC market as poised for growth. “We value our partnership with Andale Construction and the Roller Compacted Concrete Pavement Council,” said Conley, Director of Sales & Distribution Development at Ammann America. “Together, we’re advancing RCC use and applications. The ABG paver and double-tamper screed have delivered outstanding performance, and we’re proud to support the industry leaders putting this technology to work.” SP

Superior Builds World’s Largest Telescopic Stacking Conveyor…Again!

Superior Industries, Inc., a US-based manufacturer and global supplier of bulk material processing and handling systems, recently completed design and manufacturing work on what could be the largest telescopic radial stacking conveyor in the world.

The brand-new and patented TeleStacker Conveyor model is a 48-inch-wide by 210-feet-long telescoping conveyor (1220mm x 64m). It’s capable of building 425,000-ton stockpiles (315,000 cubic yards). Superior says the record-breaking stacker will be used to unload dry bulk ships along the Atlantic Coast in Florida.

Operators at the port will take advantage of the TeleStacker Conveyor’s Pile Pro Automation. This userfriendly, Superior designed and supported system automatically controls the stacker’s actions while building partially or fully-desegregated stockpiles. Some popular features include pile volume reporting, maintenance triggers and diagnostics screens.

In 2022, Superior celebrated 25 years of manufacturing its famous TeleStacker Conveyor. During that time, the conveyor earned a reputation as the best tool for defeating costly material segregation while bulk stockpiling. Superior says it manufactures about a dozen standard sizes and is always willing to customize every inch of the conveyor for premiere performance in any application. SP

Turning Excess Material into Premium M-Sand

Autosand conversion increases sand production by 65 MTPH.

A 300 TPH aggregate crushing plant operating a three-stage configuration was facing a bottleneck in its sand manufacturing process. The plant was producing 45-50 MTPH of 5-12 mm aggregate with limited market demand, leading to stockpiles and reduced profitability.

To address this, the plant required a solution to increase M-Sand production and optimize the crushing circuit.

Crushing plants can improve profitability by converting low-demand aggregate into high-value manufactured sand through circuit optimization.

The Challenge

The plant was generating significant volumes of 5–12 mm material, which had limited market demand.

Key challenges included:

• 45–50 MTPH of unsel-

lable material

• Increasing stockpiles and storage pressure

• Lower recovery of 0–4 mm manufactured sand

• Rehandling of material

Excess mid-size aggregate often reduces plant efficiency when it cannot be converted into saleable products.

The Solution

To improve sand recovery, the plant added a Terex MPS MTC1300 Autosand Cone Crusher.

Excess 5–12 mm material was redirected into the Autosand cone, where it was converted into high-quality manufactured sand with improved particle shape and gradation.

Autosand solution enables crushing plants to convert mid-size aggregate into premium M-Sand by optimizing particle shape and gradation.

New NPK Dealer

In Ontario

NPK is pleased to announce RTI Equipment Solutions as our newest authorized dealer, serving the Greater Ontario Region.

The Results

The addition of the MTC1300 Autosand Cone Crusher delivered measurable improvements:

• +65 MTPH increase in 0–4 mm premium manufactured sand

• Complete elimination of the 5–12 mm unsellable fraction

• Improved crushing circuit efficiency

• Reduced stockpile pressure

• Increased revenue potential

By converting excess aggregate into premium MSand, the plant improved both operational efficiency and profitability.

Optimizing the crushing circuit can significantly increase sand production without major plant modifications.

Powerscreen, a global manufacturer of mobile crushing, screening and conveying equipment, will mark its 60th anniversary at Hillhead 2026 alongside long-standing UK distributor Blue Group, bringing together the pioneering ideas that established mobile screening in the 1960s with the modern crushing and screening solutions that define the brand today.

Exhibiting from a new, expanded location at stand H6, a focal point will be the fully refurbished MK1 screening unit, the original machine that launched the Powerscreen story and helped establish the concept of mobile screening. Visitors will be able to explore the history of MK1, its role in shaping the industry and the restoration process through historical material and video content.

A Hall of Fame induction will take place during the show, recognising individuals who have played a significant role in the brand’s development over the past six decades.

That heritage is reinforced by the current machines on display, including the Chieftain 2200 triple deck screen, the largest inclined screen in the Powerscreen range. Developed for high-output applications requiring con-

sistent, high-specification material, the Chieftain 2200 features a patented configurable drive system and dual screenbox design that allow it to operate efficiently across a wide range of applications.

“Powerscreen pioneered mobile screening, fundamentally changing how aggregates are processed worldwide,” said Sean Loughran, Business Line Director for Powerscreen.

“Early machines such as the MK1 were at the forefront of mobile processing, while the Chieftain design platform went on to provide the blueprint for many modern mobile aggregate screens. As a result, the Powerscreen name has become closely associated with mobile screening globally, with model names such as Chieftain now widely recognised across the industry.”

Also on the stand will be the Premiertrak R450 jaw

crusher, developed for quarrying, recycling, demolition and mining applications. The machine is offered with an independent pre-screen option that delivers practical benefits in high-fines material, reducing wear, increasing throughput and improving end-product quality.

Looking ahead, visitors will be able to view an early example of the next stage in Powerscreen’s product development, with a prototype version of the 1000X Maxtrak cone crusher forming part of the wider display.

Beyond the equipment itself, the stand will also highlight the broader support and solutions available to customers through Powerscreen and Blue Group, including TRAC, a multi-sensor solution to improve screening equipment performance and durability and INNEX, a new

digital brand to improve end user experience through consolidated tools and AI driven capabilities.

“Reaching a 60-year milestone brings the focus back to what has always mattered at Powerscreen,” continued Loughran. “Strong machine

design, effective support and long-standing relationships remain central to the business, alongside continual innovation to improve the end-user experience and deliver a strong return on investment. Hillhead allows us to acknowledge that his-

tory and to thank distributors such as Blue Group, as well as those inducted into our Hall of Fame, for their role in supporting customers and the global growth of the brand.” SP

Alliance Concrete Pumps Expands Aldergrove Facility

Alliance Concrete Pumps is expanding its Aldergrove, B.C. manufacturing facility to keep pace with growing demand from customers across North America.

The expansion will significantly increase production capacity, enhance manufacturing efficiency, and reduce lead times, positioning Alliance to deliver more equipment to market, faster.

“This expansion is a direct result of the strong momentum we’re seeing from our customers,” said Clayton White, President and CEO. “Demand for our equipment continues to grow, and we are investing to ensure we can scale with it—delivering more units, with greater speed and consistency, without compromising quality.”

This latest development will round out the 10-acre property in Aldergrove with

this third building featuring (9) new 115ft long production bays, 9,000 sq ft of additional parts warehouse, a 2-story office and an additional full size paint booth.

The expanded facility strengthens Alliance’s ability to support increased order volumes, expand product offerings, and reinforce its position as a leading manufacturer of concrete pump equipment in North America. This expansion is another step in scaling the business to match demand and continuing to deliver reliable, hard-working equipment customers can count on every day. SP

Management Woes

How to find your parked vehicle in a snow storm, a case of greener grass syndrome, and a lesson in complaining to the big boss. By Ed Miller.

CTH

CTH was the traffic manager for WMTS, and his primary responsibility was oversight of the traffic department, which rated all shipments. Nowadays, most truckloads are rated at either at a flat rate, or by the mile. Back then, only a true traffic manager could figure out the convoluted rate structures for all the different commodities. Trucking companies could only transport freight, and only those specific commodities, which they had been “granted authority” by the Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC).

Additionally, most new operating authority was only granted because a shipper could not find sufficient carriers to haul its freight. This shipper would then “support” a carrier’s application for new, or additional, operating authority. It was commonplace for the shipper’s representative, along with the carrier’s representative (oftentimes the traffic manager) to both meet with the carrier’s transportation attorney. After the case was placed on the ICC “docket,” many times only the attorney would testify to state the case before the ICC.

Bullshit, you say? It certainly was bullshit, it was terribly expensive, and the

process severely restricted competition. Most trucking companies were happy with the status quo, especially the large LTL (less than truckload) carriers, because rates were high and most all company’s profits were good.

Members of Congress also realized the rules were arcane and needed to be changed, when they passed the Motor Carrier Act of 1980, more commonly referred to as “Deregulation.”

Would you believe the large trucking companies hated it? Most everyone else liked the fact that it was now possible for small trucking companies to get their feet into a shipper’s front door.

Shippers loved deregulation because freight rates practically dropped overnight.

Getting back to CTH, he had driven to Washington’s National Airport, parked his car, and then found a quiet bar inside the terminal. As he was having his “highballs,” Joe and I were having drinks at our own quiet bar in the Pittsburgh Airport. Joe was the representative for the steel shipper which was supporting our application for new operating authority to transport steel from PA to points in the US. Joe and I were flying to meet CTH in Washington, have dinner, and then meet with our company’s attorney the

following morning.

Joe and I had several more drinks on the onehour flight. After CTH met us at the gate, we shook hands, and Joe and I followed CTH back to the quiet bar to which he had evidently taken a shine. We discussed some business as we had a few more drinks. We told jokes as we had a few more drinks. We eventually realized it was so late that eating was out of the question, so we agreed to just head for the motel.

We walked into the night to find ourselves in the middle of a raging snow squall, when CTH hollers, “Where the hell did I park my car?” Snickering, as inebriated fellows do from time to time, Joe and I asked, “Oh, come on CTH, it is cold out here, so where is your damned car? Well, CTH looked across the acres, and acres, and more acres of parked cars and dejectedly said, “I don’t have a god damned clue where I parked!”

Although none of us were clothed for this kind of weather, the alcohol did make us brave enough to head in different directions as we searched the parking lots. CTH had given Joe and me the make, model, color, and license plate number of the MIA vehicle, but the wet snow had stuck to the roofs, and sides of all the cars, so we had to look at just about every single license plate. We had agreed on a time and place for our rendezvous. By the time we found his car, we were wet, cold, and stone sober.

Greener grass

During one of those young, stupid, and fly off the handle situations, I had a (perceived) disagreement with one of my bosses at WMTS. Rather than accepting his side of our argument, I resigned and went to work for another trucking company, believing in the adage, “the grass is always greener.” Unfortunately, since it did not turn out to be any greener, I will refer to this other carrier as Big Mistake (BM) Trucking.

The owner of BM flew in his private jet to attend a drivers’ safety meeting we had scheduled for Saturday morning at our terminal in Mississippi. I picked him up at the local airport and then drove to the terminal. When we got there, he told me to drive through the yard so he could look at the equipment. (I anticipated him wanting to do this, so the previous evening I had parked the 30 tractors and trailers into a very presentable arrangement.)

When we got out of the car after parking in the fuel lane, the owner walked up so close to me that I could smell his breath. He said, “What’s all those empty tractors doing out there boy?” Well, we did have four or five available trucks, so I replied, “Well sir, we are doing our best to find qualified drivers to put in them.”

He pronounced, “I’d rather have a warm body in those trucks than them sitting on the fence. Do you catch my drift?” After assuring him that I certainly did catch his drift, we went into the building for the safety meeting, where the old man promptly pissed off all the drivers. He informed them that he was ending BM’s safety bonus program,

because he felt he was paying the drivers extra money to do something they were supposed to do already— that being to drive safely.

As soon as he said his piece, he turned to me, told me to take him to the airport, and then he walked out of the building. Most drivers just sat stunned by what they were told, but one fellow jumped up and ran after the owner. He got very close to the old man and yelled that he had never worked for a sorrier son-of-a-bitch before in his life. I stepped in and pulled the driver away from the owner.

On the way to the airport, I was instructed to terminate the irate driver’s employment “within the hour.” The driver was waiting for me when I got back to the office, and after learning of his firing, he said he figured that it would happen, and that it was okay, because he “didn’t want to work for that bastard anyway!”

Well, we did get busy hiring drivers, and it only took us about two weeks to fill the empty tractors with warm bodies. Most of us were not at all surprised that it took less than 30 days before three of the five tractors were wrecked by those warm bodies. (What the hell? They wouldn’t have received a safety bonus even if they hadn’t torn up their tractors.) Karma?

Everything’s great, Boss

Several years prior to my employment with BM, an event took place that I wish I had learned about before going to work for them. One Friday evening, BM sent their company planes to pick up all terminal managers, along with their wives, and then flew them to a management meeting at the corporate office.

When the husbands and wives finished eating breakfast Saturday morning, BM gave some cash to each wife, provided them with transportation, and then bid them to go shopping and have a fun morning. The wives were asked to return in time for everyone to have lunch together.

The manager’s meeting was rolling along smoothly until the owner asked the men if anyone had any gripes or complaints about the way things were done at BM. He also said they could be very candid, and that they could ask about or discuss any topic. Reportedly, one terminal manager did have a complaint. Then another manager had a separate issue to talk about. Another said he didn’t think it had been a good idea to take away the driver’s safety bonus. Some managers, those not having their own complaints, took sides with other manager’s issues.

When the wives returned for lunch, they found their husbands without jobs, as the old man had fired every damned one of them. The lunch buffet went untouched, because everyone had lost their appetites. Everyone was taken to their motel to check out, and then the company planes flew them all back to their homes. (At least BM didn’t make them pay for their own return transportation.)
