Last week, the 2025 Global Skills Contest, hosted by Sumitomo Construction Machinery (SCM), took place in Chiba, Japan. The event is held every two years and brings together top service technicians from around the world to showcase their technical expertise and dedication to safety.

This year, 11 countries competed across five areas of service excellence:
• Safety – While not an event on its own, each contestant was monitored closely to ensure that safety was the highest priority in everything they were tasked with.
• Troubleshooting – Machines were faulted in
various ways. The technicians were monitored by two judges, who were evaluated on their ability to follow procedures, accuracy, and time.
• Engine Repair – Tasked with replacing injectors while adhering to procedures, torque specifications, and time.
• Maintenance Proposal
– Inspect a machine and determine what issues need to be addressed. This was based on a 162-line-item checklist. The contestants had one hour to complete.
• Written Test – A 25-question test relating to all areas of service.
Earlier this year, Grant Kirk, LBX Service Training
Manager, worked closely with LBX dealers to identify and select the technician who would represent LBX and North America at this prestigious event. After a thorough evaluation, Jesse Lariviere of Equipment Sales and Service (ESS) in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, was given the opportunity to compete.
Kirk explains, “Jesse is a shop technician with 15 years of service. He was highly motivated and driven to excel at the 2025 Global Service Skills Contest. Over the last 8 months, Jesse and I have met multiple times to reinforce his product knowledge on the 210 X3 excavator. I could not have chosen a more qualified candidate.”
Jesse’s enthusiasm and determination, supported by Grant’s technical expertise and training experience, proved to be an outstanding partnership. Together, they brought home first place overall, a tremendous achievement for both LBX and ESS.
This accomplishment reflects the dedication of the LBX team and the strong support of its dealer partner, Equipment Sales and Service. ESS gave Jesse the time and resources to succeed, highlighting the strength of our dealer network and the skill of the technicians who represent the Link-Belt brand. SP

The dealer and OEM handed over keys to an electric machine at an event, kicking off a campaign that will see two more battery-powered machines donated to worthy organizations.
As the season of giving approaches, a Toronto-area heavy equipment dealer is embracing the spirit early by donating a battery-powered wheel loader to a nonprofit housing organization.
Nors, which operates 10 dealership locations across Ontario, has partnered with Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) to donate an L25 Electric compact wheel loader to Habitat for Humanity — Greater Toronto Area (Habitat GTA).
Homebuilding staff and volunteers will use the zeroemission machine for site prep and construction, allowing them to achieve Habitat GTA’s mission to build affordable housing in a quieter, more environmentally friendly way.
“Our construction team is busier than we’ve ever been, with four projects and plans for nearly 200 homes
in the coming years,” said Ene Underwood, CEO of Habitat GTA. “Much of our equipment is older than some of our volunteers, so we are grateful for this generous and forward-thinking donation.”
Underwood noted that the L25 Electric loader is the first electric construction machine they’ve had, and this is the first time they’ve received a donation of such a major piece of equipment. It will be put to work right away on a 30-home project in Brampton.
The donation marks the first of three planned contributions under Nors’ newly launched campaign, “Compact Solutions, Community Impact,” which aims to empower nonprofit organizations with sustainable construction equipment.
“We’re proud to partner with Volvo to offer equip-
ment that reduces emissions and noise on jobsites, helping build a better world for future generations,” said Paul George, Regional Vice President – Ontario at Nors. “Through this initiative, we aim to accelerate awareness and adoption of electric mobility solutions across Canada, promoting both innovation and accessibility in this new era of construction.”
The L25 Electric loader delivers powerful performance without the noise or emissions typically associated with diesel-powered equipment.
“This machine is a great fit for Habitat projects, which often take place in residential areas where noise and air quality are major concerns,” said Agako Nouch, Head of Sales Development at Volvo CE. “Volvo aspires to help build the world we want to live in, and we’re excited to

see the positive impact this machine will have on the community.”
Volvo electric machines have nearly identical specs to their diesel equivalents, allowing Habitat GTA crews to maintain productivity and efficiency while reducing their carbon footprint.
This is the first collaboration between Nors and Habitat GTA — a partnership
rooted in shared values.
“This donation and the campaign are about more than equipment — they are about people and progress,” said Francisco Ramos, Nors’ COO responsible for Nors’ Construction Equipment segment. “We’re committed to helping communities build a cleaner, more efficient future by putting electric equipment directly in the hands of those driving positive change.”
Since 1988, Habitat GTA has built 26 new communi-
ties and housed more than 600 families in Toronto, Brampton, Caledon, York Region and Durham Region. They’re supported by tens of thousands of volunteers who contribute about 100,000 hours each year. Nors’ “Compact Solutions, Community Impact” campaign invites Canadians to submit nominations and share input on nonprofit organizations or municipalities that could benefit from the donation of a Volvo compact

The new full-service distribution center set to open early 2026.

Komatsu is strengthening its commitment to Canadian customers with a major investment to double the size of its parts distribution footprint and transform its Edmonton, Alberta, parts depot into a full-service distribution center. This expansion marks a significant step in Komatsu’s ongoing effort to enhance service levels, reduce lead times and better support dealers and customers across Canada.
The new facility, spanning approximately 135,000 square feet, will double the capacity of Komatsu’s existing warehouse. This upgrade
enables Komatsu to store and distribute fast-moving parts directly from Edmonton, significantly improving delivery times —including 24-hour delivery capabilities to its dealers in western Canada.
“Our customers rely on Komatsu for uptime and productivity, and this investment ensures we can meet those expectations faster and more efficiently than ever,” said Danny Murtagh, Vice President of Parts and Infrastructure.
“By bringing parts closer to where our customers operate, we’re cutting lead
times, boosting availability and improving customer service.”
The expanded Edmonton facility will transition from a regional depot to a fully integrated parts distribution hub — serving as a cornerstone of Komatsu’s North American logistics network and streamlining supply routes from Komatsu’s global manufacturing hubs in Japan and Indonesia.
The investment underscores Komatsu’s long-term confidence in its Canadian dealer partners and in the Canadian market. With the country’s mining, forestry and construction sectors continuing to grow, the upgraded facility ensures Komatsu is well-positioned to support increased demand while maintaining its industry-leading service standards.
“Canada is a core market for Komatsu,” said Rod Bull, CEO, Komatsu North America. “This expansion is not just about space — it’s about service, and making sure our dealers and customers have what they need, when they need it.” SP

electric machine. This initiative is a public consultation, not a contest.
Final recipients will be selected by a review panel from Nors and Volvo Construction Equipment based on eligibility and community impact. Public input will help inform the decision, but Nors retains sole discretion in selecting the
recipient organizations in its eastern and western territories.
Nominations are welcome through Nov. 22 on the campaign website, and input will be gathered from Nov. 25 through Dec. 10. The two recipients will be announced Dec. 16.
Nors has operated in the Canadian construction equipment segment since
2020, employing more than 760 collaborators across 36 branches in seven provinces. Volvo CE currently offers the industry’s largest lineup of electric equipment, and the models available for this donation include three compact excavators and two compact wheel loaders. SP

Hitachi Construction Machinery has announced that in April 2027 it will officially change its corporate name and brand to LANDCROS.
This change will introduce updated equipment and parts branding, while maintaining the same manufacturing excellence and dealer support customers have always trusted.
This brand transition represents the company’s next stage of accelerating innovation to create and provide customers new forms of value as they look to the future.
“Hitachi Construction Machinery started as a part
of Hitachi Ltd. in 1950. In 1970, they incorporated as a corporation and has since built a strong legacy of earning customer trust and contributing to society with the Hitachi Brand.” Says Hidehiko Matsui, CEO and Chairman of Hitachi Construction Machinery Americas. “With this upcoming phase for our company, we are looking forward to adding to that history by providing our customers solutions beyond machines.”
Beginning in April 2027, the LANDCROS brand will debut with new machine decals and company logo. All other core aspects like company structure, equipment manufacturing, product offerings, and warranty policies will remain the same. Customers can trust that the dealers they have built strong relationships with will continue to support them. The industry leading engineering they depend on will also remain, only with new decal stickers.
“The same Reliable Orange we love to see on jobsites will be the same. Our customers can be assured that this brand change will not have any major impact to the way they work with our equipment or our dealers.” Says Simon Wilson, Chief Operations Officer
at Hitachi Construction Machinery Americas. “Instead, this represents our renewed commitment to continue creating solutions that solve industry and job site problems. With the LANDCROS brand, we will develop products that integrate technologies like AI, augmented reality, remote operations, advanced robotics and more. Our goal is to offer our customers intelligent machines capable of operating, learning, and adapting to their current and future needs, while maintaining the key functional components that they prefer us for.”

Hitachi Construction Machinery has a history of over 75 years of experience in manufacturing innovative equipment. Their specialty in hydraulic engineering has been revolutionizing the heavy machinery industry since they launched the first mid-size hydraulic excavator in 1968. This history of revolutionizing the equipment industry will serve as a launching pad as they continue to redefine how humans work on jobsites of the future with LANDCROS.
LANDCROS is a symbolic word that represents the guiding ideals the company will follow as they look towards the future. The new brand name combines the word “LAND”, representing their respect for the company’s history and their vision for the future, with “Customer,” “Reliable,” “Open,” and “Solutions,” to express how they plan to provide innovative solutions to their customers. Since its reintroduction to the North American market in 2022, Hitachi-branded
equipment has seen sustained growth and increased demand with their dealer network of over 22 dealers across the United States and Canada. During the transition period before the official brand change in 2027, Hitachi Construction Machinery and its dedicated network of dealers will use a dual Hitachi Construction Machinery Reliable Solutions - LANDCROS logo as customers familiarize themselves with the LANDCROS brand. New 850B processor is upgraded for improved roadside processing performance.

The 850 processor, the Tigercat branded purposebuilt alternative to excavator conversions, has been upgraded for improved performance. The new 850B retains all of the advantages over converted excavators used in roadside processing applications — easier service access, a more comfortable cab with better visibility, and superior cooling capacity.
The performance and fuel efficiency differential

has been further increased. Initial field testing confirms that the 14% increase in power to 187 kW (251 hp) results in improved machine performance and response — quicker, smoother boom cycles, improved feed acceleration and braking, and more powerful swing. Not every dig site is wide open. In fact, many utility, infrastructure and municipal projects are happening in tight, crowded urban environments: alleys, narrow easements and locations where even maneuvering a truck can be a challenge.
In these situations, the ability to hydro excavate from a distance is more than a convenience — it’s often the only way to get the job done.
Here’s how TRUVAC equipment is engineered to support long-distance excavation safely, efficiently and effectively.
Choose the Right Tool.
When the job site is blocked by obstacles like fences, walls, parked vehicles or buildings, you need a boom that can extend and maneuver with precision. Whether reaching over a barrier or down into a vault, TRUVAC’s range of trucks, like the HXX and APXX, offer powerful, multidirectional booms designed for complex access needs.
“In tight urban spaces,
reach and boom control can make or break a job,” said
Jason Boer, Midwest regional sales manager, TRUVAC.
“You need to be able to stay parked and still get the work done without compromising safety or performance.”
Working from a distance often means longer setup times and more complex access. The last thing a crew wants to do is stop mid-project to dump debris. That’s where a larger debris tank, like those found on the HXX or APXX, becomes essential.
“When you’re in an alley or behind a structure, moving in and out just to empty the tank isn’t practical,” Boer explained. “Larger capacity lets you dig longer without leaving the site. It’s a huge time and cost saver.”
When digging from afar, high airflow is critical as it is what determines how fast the material moves. The vacuum system’s power aids in pulling the heavy stuff through the hose, so together airflow and power help suction heavy, wet and sticky materials efficiently.
The ability to cut through tough soil and vacuum debris without moving the truck not only speeds up excavation but also keeps workers out of risky positions and minimizes surface disruption.
Controlling water pressure is at the heart of safe and efficient hydro excavation, especially in dense utility
corridors. That’s why some TRUVAC units feature DigRight Technology, a patented system that lets operators set the correct water pressure for each task and ensures that it never exceeds that setting.
“When you’re excavating near gas, electric or fiber lines, water pressure control is absolutely critical,” said Andy Hearrell, Southeast regional dealer manager. “DigRight makes it simple to stay within jobsite requirements, avoid utility damage and protect both the infrastructure and your crew.”
Long-distance excavation isn’t just about reach — it’s about keeping crews safe and reducing disruption. With hydro excavation, workers can operate the system from a safe distance, avoiding exposure to cave-ins, debris and utilities. Combined with the reduced footprint of a parked hydrovac truck, it’s a safer, smarter alternative to traditional methods like backhoes or manual digging.
And in areas where space is at a premium, hydro excavation often provides the only workable solution.
“Whether you’re exposing a water main in an alley or trenching along a crowded sidewalk, the ability to dig safely from 30, 40 or even 50 feet away is a game-changer,” said Boer.
From high-capacity debris tanks and boom versatility to a powerful vacuum and higher CFM coupled with well-designed air flow equates to superior performance in TRUVAC’s family of hydrovac trucks, including the HXX, APXX and FLXX, which are built to handle

tough jobs in hard-to-reach places.
When space is limited and accuracy is critical, TRUVAC delivers the distance, durability and safety that today’s crews demand. SP

The next generation Cat 440 and 450 Backhoe Loaders feature improved machine performance, an advanced hydraulic system and increased versatility compared to previous models.
Offering more operator choice and advanced machine control, these new models also feature the efficient Cat C3.6 engine and the latest Product Link technology.
“This design transition to the new 440 and 450 backhoe loaders aligns with the next generation 416 through 430 series models in both engine platform and electronic architecture. Having similar platforms throughout the range provides more component commonality and enhanced operating similarity benefits for customers,” says David Young, senior product consultant with Caterpillar.
“We’ve also integrated Cat Soft Key and Touchscreen display options, as well as a new pod-mounted joystick option, giving operators more choice over machine control. On the 450, we updated the design of the 4-lever hoe control option. Prior to this update, it was a mechanical linkage design and now has four electronic levers. This new electronic setup also has the ability to set response and modulation rates for the boom, stick, bucket and swing functions.”
A solid performer, the Cat C3.6 engine meets U.S. EPA Tier 4 Final and EU Stage V emissions standards with selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology and a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC). Compared to the previous 440 design, the gross power rating increases by more than 9% to 130 hp (97 kW), while the 450 maintains its robust 145 hp (108 kW) gross power rating. The updated models feature a load-sensing piston pump that delivers full hydraulic lifting and digging forces at any engine speed. The variable flow pump automatically adjusts hydraulic power to meet work demands, enhancing operating efficiency. Caterpillar’s advanced hydraulic system allows operators to adjust the loader and backhoe auxiliary flow to match attachment specifications, program the loader bucket kickout and
return-to-dig functions and enable parallel lift.
Continuing the legacy of advanced operator comfort and ergonomics on previous designs, the new 440 and 450 will still offer adjustable seatmounted joystick controls. The controls swivel with the operator to perform loader and backhoe functions and enable Dual Mode operation, which offers efficient machine repositioning and allows the operator to sit at an angle while controlling the machine to improve visibility.
A new option for the 440 and 450 is a traditional podmounted joystick option that positions the advanced electronic joysticks on rear pod control towers to give operators a familiar interface. It also includes a dedicated electronic joystick for loader control that integrates a forward/ neutral/reverse (FNR) rocker switch. Along with the standard FNR lever positioned on the steering column, this option gives operators more flexibility in control preferences.
Standard for all new backhoe loader canopy configurations, a new soft key display aligns with the interface used on Cat 416 – 430 models to provide a familiar and reliable interface for operators. For all cab configurations, the 440 and 450 models feature an upgraded Cat touchscreen display, enhanced with the latest intuitive interface to enable machine control customization and allow operators to achieve greater precision. The touchscreen now includes a speedometer on the home display to provide operators with real-time ground speed information.
Loader modulation and response settings on the touchscreen enable the operator to independently adjust modulation for the lift and tilt cylinders, matching machine behavior to specific tasks like material handling with forks or other Cat attachments. For the machine’s excavator, hoe modulation and response control allow operators to in-
dependently adjust settings for each hydraulic function –swing, boom, stick and bucket – to tailor machine performance to specific preferences and job requirements. A new material handling mode delivers precise, efficient operation by reducing hoe modulation and response speed and synchronizing all hydraulic functions.
Also new for cab configurations, a convenient QR code is integrated directly into the touchscreen display, so operators can quickly access Cat Operator Training on their mobile device. Operator Training’s comprehensive library of instructional videos and guides covers key operating techniques, maintenance best practices and advanced machine features to empower operators to maximize machine performance and longevity. In-Vehicle Health Monitoring (IVHM) provides operators with insight into upcoming service intervals and allows them to view specific maintenance tasks and access additional information.
Unmatched versatility
With the new 440 and 450 models offering adjustable auxiliary hydraulic flow, the available Integrated Tool Carrier (IT Coupler) for the loader increases machine utilization and versatility. Available from the factory or as a field-installed kit, the IT Coupler provides a quick connection to a variety of Cat attachments for fast tool changes. Beyond the IT Coupler, customers can opt for a variety of mechanical and hydraulic Cat hoe couplers, including Dual Lock Pin Grabber Couplers and Pin Lock Couplers.
Offering remote data monitoring through VisionLink, the upgraded standard Cat Product Link features an integrated network manager for enhanced connectivity and fleet management. Manitou has introduced five all-new large-frame skid steers and track loaders designed to deliver more power, more versatility, and more value for customers in construction, agriculture, and rental industries across North America.
Built in South Dakota, this new lineup includes three skid steers and two CTLs, with rated operating capacities ranging from 3,250 to 3,600 pounds. These models set a new standard in breakout force, hydraulic horsepower, and auxiliary hydraulic performance, helping customers take on bigger jobs with confidence.
“These five new models represent the best of Manitou global innovation matched with North American craftsmanship — from an engineering and design team that has built skid steers and CTLs in South Dakota for more than 50 years,” announced Ilmars Nartish, Vice President — North America, Manitou. “We now offer even more of an end-to-end solution for rental businesses, large fleets and national accounts, and other businesses that prefer working with a single supplier as much as possible — including financing, attachments, connected technologies and product support. This is another big step in Manitou’s commitment to growing and supporting the North American market.”
These machines are designed from the ground up to go head-to-head with the largest models in the industry while keeping them compact, transportable, and easy to operate. With vertical lift
designs, hinge pin heights up to 136 inches, and auxiliary hydraulics delivering up to 40 GPM at 3,450 PSI, the new skid steers and CTLs are built to handle high-demand attachments like mulchers, cold planers, and brush cutters, as well as heavy-duty attachments such as snow pushes.
“The demand for larger skids steers and CTLs continues to grow — and it’s preferred to add that power and capacity in the footprint of a compact machine that’s still easy to transport and is familiar to operators versus adding a larger piece of construction equipment in many applications,” says Nathan Ryan, global product manager — skid steers and CTLs, Manitou. “At Manitou, we approached this as an opportunity to completely redesign the larger end of our product line to go toe-to-toe with other large-frame machines in the industry while maintaining our focus on lower total cost of ownership, versatility through attachment capabilities, and connected technologies that improve fleet management.”
A great machine is one that makes work easier and more efficient. That’s why this new large-frame lineup includes features to improve comfort, visibility, and control:
• Spacious, customizable

cabs with adjustable pilot joysticks and climate-controlled options.
• 7-inch color display with easy-to-read machine settings, diagnostics, and service intervals.
• Standard CRC (Comfort Ride Control) to reduce material spillage and operator fatigue.
• 360-degree LED lighting and an optional rearview camera to improve safety and visibility on busy jobsites.
The Manitou design and engineering team incorporated existing Manitou exclusive technologies such as the IdealTrax track-tensioning system and IdealAccess foldable door with all-new design features that deliver practical benefits to machine operation and performance. IdealTrax, which automatically tensions the track to its desired tension upon startup and relieves that tension when the machine is turned off, now engages directly through the in-cab display (versus at the back of the machine in previous models).
“We don’t believe in design for design’s sake,” says Ryan. “The research and development team took this design, which was first incorporated into our midsized range of machines, and
beefed it up further to handle the stresses and power of the larger machines. The design also gives the machines an extremely modern look while improving visibility for the operator to the work area at the sides of the machine.”
Service is made simple through intelligent engine compartment design and easy access to daily service checks and fill points. The tilt-up hydraulic cooler serves a double purpose of enabling a low profile to improve visibility to the rear of the machine, and allowing for improved access to service points in the engine compartment while discouraging the build-up of jobsite dust and debris. That cooling fan comes with optional reversing capabilities – either at scheduled intervals or on-demand – to improve cooling performance and to keep the engine compartment clear of debris.
These new large-frame loaders are “Manitou Connected Machines” that provide instant remote access to recent activity, operation codes, CAN data and service alerts. Owners/operators stay connected on-the-go with the myManitou mobile app, where they can moni-

tor machine location, fuel levels, operating hours, and set geofences for added control and security. They can even access key documents like the operator’s manual directly from their device. For fleet and business management, EasyMANAGER is a robust management tool — track service intervals, pinpoint machine locations, and quickly identify diagnostic codes, all from one centralized platform.
Manitou also offers financing, extended coverage, and a comprehensive attachment offering for a complete and well-rounded product platform — whether its skid steers, CTLs, telehandlers, MEWPS or forklifts — to
businesses, rental operations and owner/operators throughout North America.
“This new product line serves notice that Manitou and its dealer network stand behind you and your business’ fleet management needs from initial investment through fleet transitions and sunsetting,” says Ryan. “They offer both the excitement of extremely capable and powerful machines, and the confidence of a strong business decision that will add to and improve the value of your fleet. And the new designs make you look good while you’re doing it.” SP

Alberta businesses rely on Rokbak RA40 haulers to get the job done.
For third-generation aggregate business Boden Sand and Gravel, and sister construction company Road to Rail Construction Group, based in Alberta, Canada, the right articulated hauler is about more than just moving material – it’s about simplicity, reliability and a partnership built on trust.
In the Edberg pit in Camrose County, Alberta, three Rokbak RA40 articulated dump trucks (ADTs) are the backbone of the operation, diligently moving thousands of tons of overburden, sand and gravel every week. These trucks are shared between two companies with a common ownership group: Boden Sand & Gravel (Boden S&G) and Road to Rail Construction Group.
The partnership with Rokbak began when Road to Rail bought its first RA40 in September 2022. A year later, in August 2023, the company’s confidence in the brand led
to the purchase of two more units – a second for Road to Rail and one for Boden S&G.
For Brandon Boden, the third-generation owner of Boden S&G, the investment was a straightforward decision. With a family legacy in the Central Alberta aggregate industry dating back to the 1950s, his company has grown to produce approximately 500,000 tons (US) of material a year.
“In this business, uptime is everything. You need equipment that just works, plain and simple,” Brandon says. “The Rokbak haulers are no-nonsense trucks. They’re robust, they’re easy on fuel and they don’t give us headaches. We run them hard, and they just keep going. That reliability is exactly what we need to keep our promises to our customers.”
With each machine now having clocked over 3,000 hours in their first three years,
the three RA40 units have proven they can handle anything the pit throws at them. No matter the ground conditions and weather, the haulers’ exceptional traction effort and rim pull have overcome every challenge. But for the person spending their entire shift in the cab, performance is only half the story.
“It’s a straightforward and comfortable truck to operate all day,” says operator Ryan Skjonsberg. “Everything is where you expect it to be. The visibility is great, and it feels stable and secure, even with a full 42-ton (US) load. You can just get in, turn the key, and have confidence it’s going to get the job done.”
The dealer difference
For both Boden S&G and Road to Rail, the decision to purchase and re-invest in Rokbak was deeply rooted in their long-standing relationship with dealer Headwater Equipment, which has served Western Canada for close to

three decades. With five fullservice locations across Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan, Headwater has built its reputation on providing complete solutions – from new and used equipment sales to parts, service and rentals.
“We don’t sell a customer a machine and walk away; we sell them a solution and stick with them,” explains
Scott Letkeman, a salesman at Headwater Equipment.
“Brandon and his team knew us and trusted us. When we recommended the Rokbak, they knew it was because we believed it was the right fit for their operation. It’s a tough, reliable truck that we could stand behind.”
Headwater’s service manager Henk Coetzer coordi-
nates this essential support from the Edmonton branch to ensure timely response at the Edberg pit.
“The beauty of the Rokbak design is its serviceability,” Henk says. “Our technicians can access service points easily, which means routine maintenance is faster and troubleshooting is simpler. Continued on page 29

This keeps downtime to an absolute minimum. We work with the Boden crew to schedule service proactively, so these trucks stay where they belong – out in the pit, earning their keep.”

The strength of this threeway partnership was cemented in May 2023 when Headwater sponsored a trip for the ownership group to visit the Rokbak factory in Motherwell, Scotland. The visit provided a firsthand look at the values driving the brand.
“When you walk the factory floor in Scotland, you see the pride the team takes in building these trucks,” Brandon recalls. “It’s a clean, professional, and people-focused environment. It reminded me a lot of our own company values. Seeing that commitment to quality, and meeting the people behind the machine, confirmed we made the right choice.”
This sentiment is echoed by Rokbak, which sees partners like Boden S&G and Headwater as a true reflection of its brand.
“We build haulers that are simple, hardworking, and reliable, because that’s what contractors in places like Alberta need,” says Greg Gerbus, Rokbak regional sales manager – North America. “But our real strength comes from having fantastic customers like Boden S&G and an incredible dealer partner like Headwater Equipment. They share our values.”
Back at the Edberg pit, every load hauled is another promise kept. It’s the result of a simple formula for success: generations of hard work, strong partnerships and reliable Scottish iron. SP

Telestack has launched the TCL 2031 tracked mounted conveyor, a powerful new addition to their tracked conveyor line, the largest tracked mounted mobile conveyor on the market.
Designed to meet the demands of high-capacity material handling with unmatched versatility and strength, the TCL 2031 is a heavy duty tracked stacking and link conveyor engineered to transform high throughput material handling on mobile sites.
The TCL 2031 has been devised after the many successful installations on the existing TCL 1031 tracked mounted stacker, which handles applications up to 1,000 TPH (1,100 ton) and 0 – 400 mm (0-16 inch) Primary Jaw Crusher operations, this NEW TCL 2031 is targeted for higher capacity 1,500 tonnes per hour (1,650 ton) up to 2,500 tonnes per hour (2,750 ton per hour) applications. This unit follows Telestack’s long-lasting legacy of ‘market leading’ products which are continu-
ally pushing the boundaries to meet the demands of their extensive dealer network and global customer base in a variety of industries.
Built to meet the rising demands of modern crushing and screening plants, the TCL 2031 delivers industry leading capacity while retaining the flexibility operators need on short term projects, contract sites and large stockyards.
The TCL 2031 is designed for throughputs demanded from high-capacity crushers and auxiliary plants. In stacking applications, the unit can stack from 1,500 tonnes per hour (1,650 ton) up to 2,500 tonnes per hour (2,750 ton per hour) with a maximum lump feed size of up to 400 mm, typical from a high-capacity Primary Jaw crushing application. This tonnes per hour trans-
late to more material on the ground, meaning less wheel loader movements and double handling of the material during the operation. The TCL 2031 can achieve over 6,203 tonnes (3,877 m3) of material in a single conical stockpile (5,070 yds / 6,837 tons) and moved easily from position to position to meet the demands within the stocking area.
These performance figures translate into a lower cost per tonne, reduced fuel consumption and the ability to keep high-capacity plants running with a proven reliable stacking solution, eliminating the requirement of wheel loaders constantly moving / stacking material.
The unit is fully track mounted, enabling operators to reposition the conveyor quickly around the site for ease of mobility and

relocation from ‘site to site’ when needed. Hydraulic folding head and tail sections collapse the machine for road transport to a folded length of 17.68 m (58'0") and a transport height of 4.38 m (14'5"), or alternatively it can be broken down into shipping containers for long-haul moves if required. Typical on-site setup is under 30 minutes, letting teams react faster to changing site layouts and phasing during blasting / relocating on site.
For site mobility via the track system, the unit uses an integrated diesel hydraulic engine with regional engine options from CAT (100 kw - 130 hp) or Deutz (86 kw – 100 hp) – Stage V (Regulated countries) and Stage III – CAT 96.4 kw solutions for Non-Regulated countries, all to meet local emissions regulations.
Once the unit is in posi-

tion, the unit is then driven via All-Electric drive motors via an ‘Electric Wrap Drive’ in which 3 x phase power is plugged into the IP 66 Rated Control panel of the TCL 2031 during operation, ensuring maximum efficiency using on site electrical power or auxiliary power from the existing Jaw Crusher. There all also options for a fully – All Electric system –Telestack ‘Zero’ range (no diesel engine) for certain sites where diesel hydraulic engines are not permitted.
The TCL 2031 brings high capacity with a robust
1,400 mm belt, mining grade roller / scrapers / bearings and tracked mobility together in a single package. This product is targeted to ‘fill the gap’ for large quarries, mining and aggregate operations using high-capacity crushers (mobile / semimobile and static) that need a mobile stacking solution to effectively handle their large ‘crusher-run’ type material at a high capacity while improving site flexibility and reducing operating costs. Caterpillar introduces a smarter articulated truck design with built-in automatic features for the next generation Cat 725, 730, 730 EJ and 735 models.
The upgraded interior puts control at your fingertips, with all functions accessible through a sleek touchscreen or a smooth, responsive keypad—plus, the touchscreen can be effortlessly navigated using the integrated jog dial for added convenience. New push-to-start with operator ID stores up to 50 operator IDs to quickly get to work and safeguard against unauthorized use.
ing our next gen articulated trucks feel more comfortable, responsive, and user-friendly than ever,” says Sherrie Williams, global product application specialist for Caterpillar. “With the introduction of the Cat C13B engine on the 725, the improved power-toweight ratio means it is up to 14% more efficient on our Tier 4 Final [and equivalent] machines.”
“Caterpillar’s latest machine design makes operat-

The new Cat C13 engine powers the next generation of trucks with ratings from 257 to 316 kW (345 to 424 hp), depending on the model. Designed to meet global emission standards—including U.S. EPA Tier 4 Final, EU Stage V, Japan 2014, and Korea Stage V—the C13 features a compact, lightweight design with no need for exhaust gas recirculation. The machine is available in configurations suitable for all regions worldwide, ensuring reliable performance across a wide range of applications.
Requiring no operator input, advanced automatic traction control prevents wheel slippage in poor underfoot conditions for maximum traction and productivity. The new engine overspeed control works seamlessly with Automatic Retarder Control (ARC) to manage braking and automatically adjust engine speed—enhancing truck handling, improving steering response, and building confidence for newer operators in challenging conditions.
Machine speed limiting supports safe operation by allowing ground speed to be set by the operator or in service mode—ideal for uneven terrain, high-traffic areas, or sites with strict speed regulations. Additionally, the integrated body height limiter promotes safety by helping ensure the machine operates within jobsite standards and height restrictions.
The Cat 725, 730 and 735 models feature a redesigned dump body that offers easier loading than previous designs and maximizes payload. The redesigned body features a rerouted exhaust heat system that helps minimize material carryback, improving load efficiency and reducing cleanup time. Improved payload technology allows operators to view real-time load weights on the integrated display, and the system’s updated software and sensors provide accurate

data. External payload indicator lights alert the loading operator when approaching rated payload and when payload is reached.
Caterpillar’s unique feature, Dynamic Roll Protection, supports rollover prevention, working in parallel with the field-proven Stability Assist, which prevents hoisting on uneven terrain. Configurable to material and jobsite conditions, this new feature monitors conditions to detect when the truck is experiencing high lateral acceleration, provides a visual and audible alarm, reduces fuel and applies service brakes automatically. It reduces the risk of machine rollover due to high-speed cornering, helping minimize downtime and safety repairs from rolling the truck. Additionally, Stability Assist software reports information via VisionLink® to increase awareness of when an event has occurred.
Reducing operator fatigue, the new Auto Wait Brake (AWB) automatically applies service brakes when the shift lever is in any position other than park and ground speed reaches 0 kmph. The service brakes apply in less than one second after the machine has stopped, and, after eight seconds, the transmission shifts to neutral with AWB engaging. Simply applying the throttle re-engages the transmission and releases the service brakes. This new feature eliminates the need to shift to park for short duration stops and saves fuel when shifting to neutral. This feature also works with the machine Hill Assist, by applying the service brakes, preventing rollback.
A new dump body height
limit feature for 725, 730 and 735 models allows the bed raise height to be set to meet jobsite conditions. The operator can quickly set the raise height limit by raising the bed to the desired height and holding a button on the keypad. Alternatively, it can be set through the display service mode to meet site-wide limits. This feature helps prevent the dump body from contacting overhead objects and increases cycle time by limiting fullbody travel.
The Cat 730 EJ Articulated Truck ejects the load without raising the body to help maintain machine stability. This unique design allows load dispersal on inclines, side slopes and in very soft underfoot conditions like those found on landfill sites. Virtually eliminating material sticking
to the body to increase productivity, the truck can eject in areas with low overhead clearance, such as around overhead lines or in tunneling and underground operations. Delivering faster cycle times, the versatile 730 EJ can eject and spread material on the go to reduce the need for additional spreading and dozing equipment.
Providing front and rear proximity detection, all next generation articulated trucks offer an optional object detect and multiview camera via a separate secondary monitor. The system’s radar sensors, mounted fore and aft, provide visual and audible alerts when objects are within the truck’s travel path. Four discrete camera views, that are configurable to the operator’s

The building trade is under even more pressure to reduce costs and environmental consequences.

Portable rock crushers for construction are increasingly being used as a necessary tool to make this happen, all while addressing sustainability in the industry and at job sites. Here’s what to know before you make the purchase.
The environmental challenge in construction
Construction and demolition create tons of debris that is dumped in landfills. This waste ends up being transported to disposal sites, which requires fuel and adds costs and emissions. At the same time, the demand for virgin aggregate is rising, leading to resource depletion and carbon-intensive extraction. To address these challenges, contractors are turning to ecofriendly construction practices like on-site rock crushing.
What makes portable rock crushers “green”?
Portable rock crushers for construction allow contractors to process materials directly at the job site. Komplet America provides portable rock crushers for construction that have the capability to deal with materials such as concrete, asphalt, brick, and stone, and are able to pro-
vide on-site crushing without needing distant processing facilities.
By eliminating hauling, cutting waste, and creating reusable products, these machines align with green construction equipment goals, and they are viable options for low-impact, environmentally conscious crushing projects. Modern designs also emphasize high efficiency, low noise, and adherence to environmental standards.
Sustainability benefits of portable rock crushers for construction
• Reducing Landfill Waste: A benefit of on-site crushing is that there is less debris hauled to landfills. Processed materials can be recycled rather than disposed of, and it saves valuable space.
• Cutting Down Hauling And Transport Emissions: Eliminating the need to transport rocks off-site for disposal or recycling, portable crushers cut down on fuel use and corresponding greenhouse emissions. Mobile crushing is seen as a cleaner alternative, reducing its environmental impact.
• Producing Recycled Aggregates: Crushed debris is turned into valuable recycled aggregates for use as road base, backfill, and even new concrete mix.
This minimizes the requirement for virgin material and results in lower overall project costs.
• Supporting LEED & Green Building Certifications: Construction that recycles materials on-site can also earn points for LEED and other certifications. Portable crushing operations can help contractors save on costs, time, and contribute to sustainability in the entire construction process.
The future of sustainable crushing is moving toward hybrid and electric power systems, smarter telematics, and higher-quality recycled outputs. With compact, transportable units already available, Komplet America is well-positioned to support contractors as environmental regulations tighten and sustainability becomes a competitive advantage.
Portable rock crushers for construction are more than just machines; they are key enablers to green and sustainable construction equipment. They reduce landfill waste, lower emissions from hauling, create recycled aggregates, and are eligible for green building certifications to help contractors save money and build responsibly.
For those committed to eco-friendly construction practices, investing in portable crushers is both a smart financial move and a longterm commitment to sustainability. SP

Mack Trucks has made the first public debut of the all-new Mack Anthem at the American Trucking Associations Management Conference and Exhibition in October.
This completely redesigned truck, launched in June 2025, delivers up to10% improvement in fuel efficiency compared with the previous model, enhanced maneuverability and industry-leading driver comfort.
“The all-new Anthem represents a complete reimagining of what a modern Class 8 truck should deliver,” said Jonathan Randall, president of Mack Trucks North America. “We’ve designed this truck to address the real challenges fleet managers face today: rising fuel costs, driver recruitment and retention, and the need for equipment that maximizes productivity. The Anthem delivers measur-
able improvements in every area that impacts our customers’ bottom line.”
The new Anthem, available in day cab, 44-inch sleeper and 64-inch sleeper configurations, is built from the ground-up with cutting-edge technologies and design principles. The truck’s enhanced maneuverability comes from a shorter bumper-to-backof-cab (BBC) length of 113.5 inches, making it exceptionally well-suited for navigating tight spaces and urban environments. The redesigned hood dramatically improves forward visibility, allowing drivers to see approximately 12% closer to the front bumper compared with previous

turnaround times so you can keep downtime to an absolute minimum.
Brandt celebrated the grand opening by donating $50,000 to the Maskwa Medical Center in Grande Prairie, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to enhancing access
designs and significantly reducing the risk of front-corner collisions.
“The response to the Anthem has reinforced what we knew from the start – fleets need a truck that excels in maneuverability without sacrificing comfort or efficiency,” said Fernando Couceiro, Mack Trucks vice president of highway trucks. “The Anthem delivers on all fronts, giving our customers a competitive advantage in their operations.”
The Anthem features a completely redesigned cab interior with a cab that’s nine inches wider than the previous model. New wide-base seats feature optional ventilation, heating and massage functions, while standup sleeper options provide enough headroom for drivers to stand upright. Premium quality mattresses and blackout curtains enable improved rest. The truck also features

to specialized medical services for residents of the Peace Region.

advanced safety technologies, including an optional digital mirror system that eliminates traditional blind spots, a standard front airbag and an optional Integrated Curtain Airbag (ICA) system. Additional integrated driver assistance systems have demonstrated a 43% reduction in near-miss incidents during controlled testing.
The new Anthem features Mack Connect, the company’s most advanced telematics platform, providing fleet managers unprecedented visibility into operations. Overthe-air programming enables overnight software updates without service appointments, while the predictive maintenance system has been shown to reduce unplanned stops by 20%. Integration with Mack’s GuardDog Connect automatically transmits service data to dealers, resulting in a 37% reduction in overall downtime compared with previous-generation trucks.
The Anthem is particularly well-suited for weight-sensitive applications including bulk haul, operations that require maneuvering in tighter spaces such as food and beverage distribution, and lessthan-truckload (LTL) hub & spoke operators.
The new Mack Anthem is available for order now, with production beginning in January 2026. SP

The all-new Distinction RG (Reverse Gate) Series was designed to meet the demands of specialized operations through versatility, efficiency, and the premium quality that has defined the Distinction lineup for years.

The RG Series maintains its 28.5-foot and 30.5-foot pup design, but has been updated inside for a new hopper setup. It comes with an 84-inch sidewall to maximize capacity and a brand-new 26-inch hopper clearance for easy access with larger hoppers. The 30-degree slope angles remain, ensuring the smooth, reliable clean-out that Distinction trailers are known for.
This trailer is available in three colours—graphite metallic, white, and black. It features durable exterior and interior panels, thicker slope angles for strength, and standard stainless steel corner posts, with an option to upgrade to full stainless steel panels on the front and back walls. Like all Distinction models, it has a two-piece rail design as well.
ing allows both hoppers to be unloaded at the same time, without needing to move the trailer.
Like all Lode King trailers, it’s important that your trailer is protected from the elements. The RG Series is equipped with numerous design elements that do just that. Mud flaps are mounted ahead of the landing gear, suspension frame, and behind each axle to protect the trailer from road debris. The fenders are mounted with a stainless steel bracket, eliminating the former tube-style mount.
Additionally, grip tape has been added to the centre fender to ensure safe and easy access.
tem is an excellent option for improved tire life. This system ensures that all tires remain at a consistent pressure.
The aluminum Jost landing gear is standard on the Distinction RG series trailer. It features a galvanized insert and comes with a 10-year warranty and a 5-year maintenance-free package.
Tarp cranks are mounted for easy access, and the evergrowing popular power tarp option with a wireless remote makes frequent load cycles much faster.
An external tire pressure gauge offers quick pressure checks without the need to open the air gauge box.
Each detail of the Distinction RG Series reflects feedback from operators in the field. From its quick-unload reverse gate system to its heavy-duty protection and visibility features, this trailer was designed to handle tough jobs while keeping operators safe. SP

New measures are coming to protect Albertans and penalize bad actors in the tow truck industry who use high pressure tactics to coerce drivers at collision scenes.
Alberta’s government has introduced new rules to crack down on predatory tow trucking practices. Previously, the province had no specific penalties to address this behaviour, such as towing vehicles without consent, not providing necessary information to vehicle owners and exploiting emotionally vulnerable individuals who have been involved in a collision. These changes will immediately target this dishonest behaviour by establishing a clear, provincewide standard for all tow truck drivers, ensuring better protection for Albertans.
Effective August 8, these
changes will establish a 200-metre exclusion radius around a collision scene prohibiting tow truck drivers or anyone directing tow trucks from pitching their services.
Anyone who enters the exclusion zone without being invited to do so by select personnel will be subject to a $1,000 fine.
“The last thing someone needs after a collision is to be taken advantage of by aggressive tow truck operators charging excessive fees,” said Devin Dreeshen, Minister of Transportation and Economic Corridors. “These new rules will protect Albertans from unethical behav-

iour, give drivers more control in a stressful moment, and help reduce insurance costs caused by inflated towing bills.”
The new rules will empower drivers to understand their right to request information before choosing whether to accept or refuse towing services. By establishing a consistent, provincial response to predatory tow trucking driver behaviour, these changes will help mitigate rising insurance premiums resulting from excessive towing fees. While tow truck operators are now restricted from approaching collision scenes uninvited, drivers, police and emergency services personnel can still request towing services when needed.
“AMA strongly supports these new rules, which protect Albertans from being exploited during already stressful situations,” stated Michelle Chimko, president and chief

members invite the public to contribute in ways meaningful to them, whether through food, clothing, or volunteer efforts and come watch the trucks at a convenient spot along the route
and cheer them on.
Parade drivers are busy preparing their rigs for the big night and look forward to sharing the holiday spirit and engaging with the community on December 6.

executive officer, Alberta Motor Association (AMA). “Alberta’s towing industry has a long-standing reputation for trustworthiness and professionalism, and these clear regulations send a strong message that predatory practices have no place here. We look forward to continuing our work with government to help eliminate unethical behaviour in the industry.”
“Albertans have the right to select the towing company of their choice following a
collision and should not feel pressured to immediately accept services offered at the scene,” said Nicole Chapdelaine, Deputy Chief, Edmonton Police Service. “The EPS has made several arrests related to this predatory practice and are supportive of rules that offer those involved in collisions the space required to navigate an already taxing situation.”
Alberta’s government remains committed to working with industry partners to
identify further solutions to prevent predatory tow trucking practices and protect drivers across the province.
Key Facts
Drivers have reported being charged up to $2,500 for unrequested vehicle towing services.

Daimler Truck North America LLC announced the production of its 850,000th truck at its Cleveland, North Carolina manufacturing plant, marking a major milestone for the U.S. manufacturing company.
The milestone vehicle - a Western Star 47X - was delivered to Alamo Group, a long-standing DTNA customer. The truck will be provided to Alamo Group’s Snow & Ice Team, a leading North American manufacturer of heavy-duty snow and ice removal equipment, which delivers a full suite of solutions designed for municipal, highway, and airport winter maintenance operations. From turnkey plow trucks and multilane snow removal systems to advanced airport de-icing equipment, they equip snow fighters with the tools they need to keep roads and runways safe and operational. Alamo Group, headquartered in Seguin, Texas, is a global leader in industrial and vegetation manage-
ment equipment, with over 40 brands, more than 3,750 employees, and $1.69 billion in annual revenue.
“Alamo Group has been a valued partner for many years, and we’re proud to support their mission with our most advanced vocational trucks,” said David Carson, senior vice president of Sales and Marketing at DTNA. “The Western Star 47X is purpose-built for demanding applications like snow and ice management, and it’s always exciting to see these trucks out in the field - doing the tough jobs they were truly made for.”
Western Star is DTNA’s fastest-growing brand, known for its rugged, reliable vocational trucks designed for the most demanding applications. The
47X, powered by a Detroit DD13 engine, is engineered for durability, safety, and performance in extreme conditions – making it the perfect fit for snow and ice removal.
DTNA’s relationship with Alamo Group has steadily evolved over the past decade - from individual division-level partnerships to a consolidated national account that has grown significantly in both scope and scale. In recent years, Alamo Group has emerged as one of Western Star’s leading vocational customers.

“We’re honored to receive this milestone truck and continue our strong relationship with DTNA,” said Jean Philippe Bourque, group vice president of Alamo Group’s Snow and Ice Division. “The Western Star 47X is a critical part of our portfolio, and our customers value the reliability, performance, and support that comes with it.”

Established in 1989, DTNA’s Cleveland Truck Manufacturing Plant is the company’s largest heavyduty truck plant in the U.S., spanning 1.2 million square feet on 178 acres. The facility employs approximately 2,000 people and right now assembles the Fifth Generation Freightliner Cascadia and Western Star 47X and 49X.
As one out of nine North American manufacturing plants, the Cleveland plant is known for its flex-
ible, complex manufacturing capabilities, integrating cutting-edge robotics and advanced lean manufacturing techniques. Despite the plant’s cutting-edge infrastructure, much of the truck assembly remains handson reflecting the precision, and craftsmanship the team brings to every Western Star built. It’s this balance of advanced technology and dedicated workmanship that defines DTNA’s approach to quality.
“Reaching 850,000 trucks is a testament to the dedication of our Cleveland team and the strength of our manufacturing processes,” said Jeff Allen, senior vice president of operations and specialty vehicles at DTNA.
“This plant is not only a cornerstone of our production
network - it’s a vital part of the Rowan County community here in the Carolinas.”
The Cleveland plant is also a leader in sustainability, operating as a zerowaste-to-landfill facility and contributing to DTNA’s broader goal of significantly reducing its environmental footprint by 2030 through improvements in emissions, water use, waste management, and energy efficiency.
As one of the largest manufacturing employers in Rowan County, the plant actively supports local initiatives, including disaster relief, veteran support through the Ride of Pride program, and school and holiday donation drives. SP

When the largest aircraft in the world no longer takes to the air, they get a lift from a Western Star truck.
In May 2025, the 76,000-pound World War II-era Philippine Mars flying boat, one of the last of its kind, was retired and relocated to the Pima Air & Space Museum in Tucson, Arizona. The epic 150-mile journey was made possible by utilizing a Western Star 49X, a truck known in the industry for its strength and durability.
gallons of water.
Boneyard Safari, specializing in historic aircraft transport, partnered with Southwest Industrial Rigging, which provided the 49X heavy haul truck to move the nearly 80-yearold aircraft. The length from the tractor bumper to the tail of the plane measured over 140 feet, and the gross vehicle weight of the truck and aircraft exceeded 177,000 pounds.
the route was determined early on, some last-minute changes to avoid low powerlines didn’t slow us down.”
The convoy traveled five nights on state and local roads at an average speed of 25 miles per hour and in-
cluded dozens of additional vehicles.
A legacy of reliability
Southwest Industrial Rigging has relied on Western Star trucks for more than 45 years, with founder Harry Baker valuing their reliabil-
ity and heavy-haul capabilities. “We’ve continued to purchase Western Star trucks as our fleet expanded, adding four new 49X Series trucks to our heavy-haul division over the last few years,” noted Goldstein.
The operator raved about

the 49X saying it offered great visibility and the best turning radius he’d ever experienced, essential for maneuvering the massive load through challenging intersections and narrow roads. Just as important during overnight runs: the cab stays impressively quiet. Thanks to steel-reinforced aluminum and sound dampening materials like Quiet Steel in the engine tunnel, road

This feat follows a Western Star’s 4900EX involvement in hauling a similar World War II bomber aircraft, the Hawaii Mars, to an aviation museum in Victoria, British Columbia, in 2024.
Overcoming the challenges of transporting a flying giant
Just how massive are the Mars-series aircraft? They feature a 200-foot wingspan and, while serving as an aerial firefighting titan following WWII, could scoop up and drop more than 7,000
“We started this project on February 10, 2025, when we met the Philippine Mars on Lake Pleasant in Arizona,” said Aaron Goldstein, marketing director of Southwest Industrial Rigging. “Extracting her from the water and preparing her for the journey was a massive undertaking. Once she was ready, we relied on our 49X for the long haul to the museum.”
Given the size and complexity, transport was conducted exclusively at night. This was a critical safety measure to minimize traffic disruption on public roads. Moving the oversized load at night allowed the convoy to travel slowly and safely, with the support of police escorts and utility crews. Says Goldstein, “Our Western Star 49X helped ensure the transport was a piece of cake for the entire entourage. We owned the road every night, and although

My last college trucking trip was also one to remember. After having delivered a load in Illinois, I was dispatched to Indianapolis to pick up a load of pinto beans.
At the bean processing plant, the dock foreman said, “Where’s this damned load of pinto beans going, North Carolina?” I agreed the load was consigned to NC, and I asked him how he knew the destination. He replied, “Cause that’s the only God dam people that eats them damned pinto beans!” He and his buddies must have thought this was funny because they laughed their asses off. I didn’t find a whole lot of humor in the comment, but hell, I love pinto beans, so maybe it is true!
I had to help the workers transfer 50-pound bags of pinto beans off their pallets, and stack them onto the floor of the trailer. At delivery, those bags were then placed upon the consignees’ pallets. (Strange, but true, but that’s another story.) The delivery

appointment was scheduled in NC early the next morning, so after sweating my ass off loading the beans, I drove a few miles to a truck stop where I showered and got something to eat. (No, after humping those 50-pound bags, I did not order pinto beans.)
Twenty miles into the trip south from the truck stop, a driver called to me on the CB to inform me of a flat tire on my trailer. I soon found another truck stop with a tire repair shop. I was told that I might have to wait for several hours, because the hot weather was causing many truck-tire blowouts, and the tire shop was extremely busy. The tire shop’s estimate was correct about the wait time, because, sure enough, my spare tire was installed a couple of hours later.

my teeth. These were also the days before truck televisions, smart phones, or wireless internet access, so I decided to sleep until the tire-man made his appearance.

While waiting for the tire to be fixed, I didn’t figure I could stay awake long enough to make my delivery ontime the next morning. I was having a conversation with another driver while having coffee, and when he learned of my problem, he said he had a couple of “truck driver pills” he could sell to me.
As I headed south, it didn’t take too long to realize the “no doze” pills were beginning to work, because my mouth was as dry as a pinto bean fart, and I was smoking Camel non-filters like they were going out of style. Just before I crossed from Kentucky into Tennessee, a loud “POW” alerted me of another blown tire—this one on the tractor, and I limped several miles ahead into the Tennessee Welcome Center.
I crawled into the bunk and laid my head on my pillow. My eyes would not shut! The pills were doing such a fine job that I couldn’t have closed my eyes if I had used a come-along! I had nothing left to read because I had finished the book I had taken with me on this trip. I tossed. I turned. I became so fidgety that had to get out of that bunk because I was getting the “heebie-jeebies.”
four of the men entering the men’s room didn’t really need to use the facilities, since they were there only because they were seeking the company of other men. Would you believe I wasn’t really happy by being propositioned a couple of times during the night?
rose, I can think of a helluva lot more picturesque settings than a Tennessee Welcome Center. The Black Bennie was doing a fine job of keeping me awake, and time was moving right along as I watched hundreds of vehicles enter and leave the rest area. Yes, they would be back on the highway in a few minutes. No, I was still pilled up and not able to do a damned thing except to watch them.

Unfortunately, my only spare tire had been used back in Indiana. This was the 1970s, which was a time when we had to use pay phones and phone books, and I spent a very long time, and used a lot of quarters trying to find road service. There was no tire service available at midnight, and the very best any company could do was to bring me a tire at 0700 the next morning.
With nothing to do until morning, I took my shower kit into the men’s room, where I washed my face and brushed
There were several picnic tables sitting next to the sidewalk leading to the welcome center building. I plopped down on one and I struck up a conversation with practically everyone who stopped at the rest area. The summer weather contributed to the large numbers of travelling vacationers, so there was no shortage of people with whom to talk.
Unfortunately, it didn’t take too long for me to figureout that about three-out-of-

One guy didn’t want to take no for an answer, and he also would not get up from the picnic table when I told him I wanted to be left alone. I suppose he thought I was inviting him to my truck when he followed me to it, but he quickly ran to his car when I pulled my tire-thumper from under the seat. Actually, I kept it with me the rest of the night as I sat at that picnic table.
Gladly, I did not receive any more offers for a good time.
(Maybe holding that thumper was also the reason none of the vacationers talked with me anymore either, so I drank Cokes, smoked Camel nonfilters, and walked around the picnic grounds by myself through these early morning hours.)

The tire service man arrived around 0800 that morning and put a new tire on the old rim. After he put the tire onto the tractor, I was finally able to complete my bean run. Yes, I learned several life lessons on this last run. SP
