Paradise Found

Humanity is lost… or so it seems, as we watch the chaos on our TV screens.

Our Red, White and Blue lies burning in the street, as masked protesters in anger, vow our defeat.

Now, there was a warrior, a softspoken voice, who calmly broke through and gave both sides a choice. He was able to reach that madding crowd by listening to their views. This he firmly avowed. His message rang true as he spoke from the heart of faith, love and family, a good place to start. But tragedy rang out on that fateful day. Virtue was not silenced. It found another way. Instead of violent outbursts, the masses bowed in prayer. Yes something happened that was extremely rare. The days ahead are hopeful, as we carry on his goal of making sure we strive to rescue every soul!

SONORAN DESERT LANDSCAPES

OWNER - SMILING DOG LANDSCAPES

PODAXIS PISTALLARIS

THE DESERT SHAGGY MANE

Before getting into the nitty gritty of one of the few fruiting fungi of the Sonoran Desert let’s have a short discussion of mushrooms in general.

All mushrooms spend most of their life hidden underground or buried deeply in the tissue of dead, decomposing plants, which they feed on. If you ever turned over a rotting log and found tiny, white, web-like structures running through the organic material underneath, you have most likely seen the real body of the mushrooms. These hair-like bodies, called mycelium, are present year-round, silently converting these nutrients to food for the fungi. Once enough nutrients have been absorbed, and a nice rain comes along, the mycelium focuses all the energy gathered to producing the mushroom, which seems to pop up out of nowhere. Sunlight and air flow orient the new mushroom (aka as the fruiting body) up to the surface and beyond so that the mushroom will be able to release its spores and the process can start all over again. Comparing a mushroom to an apple, the mycelium is the tree, and the mushroom is the apple.

Also known as False inky cap, P. pistallaris is indeed a mushroom. What follows is some interesting information about this surprising desert dweller.

P. pistallaris spores have thicker cell walls than other ‘shrooms’ which help keep the spores protected from heat and desiccation in our arid environment.

According to many reports it is edible but I’m going out on a limb here and telling you to NOT EAT IT. I found no accounts that said it tasted good, but many that said it was not poisonous. 'Nuff said.

This species is also found in African and Australian deserts and has been used by indigenous desert dwellers for; Skin disease, Sunburn, Inflammation, Anti-bacterial, Dye(made by mixing spores with urine to produce a dark red, brown or black tint), and Fly repellant.

P. pistallaris is not known to have any psychoactive compounds or hallucinogenic properties (sorry kids), again….DON’T EAT IT!

If you would like to take a deep dive into other Arizona fungi, may I recommend the Arizona Mushroom Society, https://www.arizonamushroomsociety.org/

GOLD CANYON GARDEN CLUB

Blue Star Memorial Dedication at Silly Mountain Park

Gold Canyon Garden Club is proud to announce the dedication of a Blue Star Memorial on November 14, 2025 at 11:00 am at Silly Mountain Park in Apache Junction.

We invite you to join us as we dedicate the Blue Star Memorial to the honor and glory of all the men and women who have served, are now serving, or will serve in the Armed Forces of our great Nation.

The Dedication will take place by the Ramada, and will feature a presentation of colors, military tributes, guest speakers and more. A Reception will follow at the Ramada. Everyone is welcome!

This program began with the planting of 8,000 Dogwood trees by the New Jersey Council of Garden Clubs in 1944 as a living memorial to veterans of World War II. In 1945, the National Council of State Garden Clubs (now National Garden Club, Inc.) adopted this program and began a Blue Star Highway system that covers thousands of miles across the Continental United States, Alaska, and Hawaii. Blue Star Memorial Highway Markers were placed along the way.

The Blue Star was adopted because it had become an icon in World War II and was seen on flags and banners placed in businesses, churches and home windows for sons and daughters away at war.

Today, Arizona is home to twenty-three Blue Star Memorials. We would be honored if you would join us as we dedicate our 24th Blue Star Memorial at Silly Mountain Park.

This dedication celebrates the installation of a Blue Star Memorial creating a lasting tribute to the members of our nation’s Armed Forces. The Blue Star Memorial serves as a beacon of gratitude and remembrance, providing an enduring symbol that connects our community to the sacrifices and service of military personnel; Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, Navy, and Space Force.

IN THE KITCHEN WITH MARSHA

Savory REUBEN BAKE

This spinoff of a Reuben sandwich makes for a hearty, comforting meal with layers of corned beef (or pastrami), sauerkraut and Swiss cheese!

INGREDIENTS:

• 4 slices of rye bread (I used Chompie’s Rye Bread)

• 1 pound thinly slices corned beef or pastrami, divided (I used pastrami, more flavorful)

• **1 (or 2) 14.5 oz can(s) or jar of sauerkraut, WELL DRAINED – Recipe called for 1 can, but if you like more sauerkraut, use 2 cans. I would layer the second can on top of the second layer of pastrami and continue on.

• 4 cups shredded Swiss cheese, divided

• Additional ½ to ¾c shredded Swiss cheese, to sprinkle on top at end of baking

• 2 tsp caraway seeds, divided

• 1 cup chopped dill pickles

• 1 cup milk

• 3 large eggs, beaten

• 1/3 cup Thousand Island dressing

• ¼ cup yellow mustard

INSTRUCTIONS:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray a 9”x13” baking dish with nonstick cooking spray. Cut 4 slices of rye bread into 2-inch cubes and place them in the bottom of the baking dish.

Layer the Casserole:

Evenly distribute half of the pastrami over the cubed bread.

Spread the “DRAINED” sauerkraut and chopped dill pickles on top. Sprinkle with 1 teaspoon of caraway seeds.

Add 2 cups of shredded Swiss cheese over the sauerkraut layer.

Place the remaining pastrami on top of the cheese. Gently press down on the layers to compact them. **At this point, use the second drained can of sauerkraut if you like.

Sprinkle the remaining 2 cups of shredded Swiss cheese and 1 teaspoon of caraway seeds over the pastrami (or sauerkraut).

In a medium bowl, whisk together the milk, beaten eggs, Thousand Island dressing and mustard. Pour the sauce evenly over the entire casserole. Cover with foil.

Bake in preheated oven for 45 minutes. Remove from oven and take off foil. Sprinkle with the ½ - ¾ cup of Swiss cheese. Set oven on broil and put casserole back in for about 1 minute to “lightly” brown the top of the casserole. Remove from oven and let rest for 5-6 minutes. Slice into portions and serve warm! Refrigerate any leftovers. Tastes good the next day. Just reheat in the oven or toaster oven.

Compliments from Miarecipes.com with some personal changes I made.

HEALING NATURALLY

Dr. Tina Marcantel, Naturopathic Doctor

480-738-1647 | DrMarcantel.com

6589 S. Kings Ranch Road, Gold Canyon

Do you have a recurring physical condition and have never been able to get to the root cause? Do you find yourself often struggling with negative thoughts and emotions?

The author, Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, said, “The body keeps score.” What he means is that suppressed emotions and negative thoughts can affect our bodies. Our bodies are made of flesh and blood and bone, but we’re also made of energy. Our brain produces energy waves that can be measured with an EEG machine. Our heart beats with electrical impulses that we measure with an EKG machine.

When the energy in our body becomes blocked, or dense, from suppressed emotions or repetitive negative beliefs, it can actually get trapped at a cellular level. The body then screams to be heard through its signs and symptoms. The good news is that when you understand how your energy works and how it affects your body, you can use simple selfhealing techniques to improve your physical and emotional health.

As both a naturopathic doctor and a registered nurse with over forty years of clinical experience, I am convinced that to achieve long-term health and well-being, we need to treat ourselves holistically—that is, by addressing the spirit, mind, and body.

The seven chakras are the energy centers in your body. Each of these energy centers has a related spiritual truth—that is, the truth about who you are, such as, “I am safe, I am loved, I am worthy.” In Ayurvedic medicine (traditional holistic Indian medicine), each of the chakras also corresponds to physical

HEALING THAT LASTS

areas and organ systems in your body. If what you truly believe about yourself doesn’t align with the sacred truth of a particular chakra, the energy flow in your body is blocked or dense and that can affect the related physical organs.

Beginning in January of 2026, I’m going to do a series of articles on the chakras. In this series we’ll explore how each of the chakras relates to specific organ systems in your body. I’ll talk about how certain signs and symptoms may point to dense energy that needs to be acknowledged and released from a particular chakra to allow for a long-term physical and emotional healing.

I call this series Children of the Chakras: A Return to Health and Self-Love. Inside each of us are aspects of ourselves— children, if you will—that are seeking to be heard, loved, and acknowledged. As we allow these fears and doubts to come to the surface without self-judgment, we release the suppressed energy that may be stopping us from moving forward with the healing we need and the life we deserve.

In these articles I’ll explain in simple terms about the seven chakras and how they relate to our physical bodies. I’ll give suggestions about how to work with your “children of the chakras” to help you identify and clarify the roots of dense energy that needs to be released. I’ll also share some fun and effective techniques to clear negative energy and start the healing process.

I’ve worked with so many people over the years who have benefited from this type of energy work. It’s still amazing to me that when we address these long-suppressed thoughts and feelings, combined with necessary medical interventions, we often experience physical healing of conditions that may have troubled us for years. I look forward to sharing these articles with you in 2026, and I hope you’ll enjoy them, too!

REAL ESTATE FOR YOU

THE MOST OVERLOOKED COSTS OF SELLING A HOME

Selling a home can feel straightforward, but many homeowners are surprised by the hidden costs that can affect their bottom line. Beyond the agentís commission and mortgage payoff, a variety of expenses can accumulate during the selling process. Understanding these costs ahead of time ensures you are financially prepared and helps avoid surprises at closing.

Repairs and Home Improvements: Even minor repairs can add up. Painting, fixing leaks, replacing outdated fixtures, and landscaping improvements can significantly enhance a homeís appeal. While some upgrades increase sale value, they still require upfront investment, and homeowners should budget accordingly.

Staging and Photography: Professional staging and highquality photography can help a home sell faster and attract more buyers. These services come at a cost, but they can improve marketing effectiveness, create a strong first impression, and potentially justify a higher asking price.

Moving Expenses: Moving is often an underestimated cost. Packing supplies, professional movers, storage units, and transportation can add thousands of dollars to the selling process. Planning early and budgeting for moving costs helps prevent unexpected financial strain.

Closing Costs and Fees: Sellers often forget about closing costs beyond the agentís commission. These can include title insurance, escrow fees, attorney fees, transfer taxes, and outstanding utility bills. Reviewing these expenses with your agent or a closing professional ensures there are no surprises during settlement.

Temporary Housing and Utilities: If your new home is not ready when you sell, temporary housing or short-term rentals may be necessary. Additionally, you may need to continue paying utilities on your sold home until the closing is finalized. These costs can quickly accumulate if not planned for in advance.

Awareness of all potential expenses allows homeowners to set realistic expectations and make informed decisions during the selling process. By planning for repairs, staging, moving, closing costs, and temporary accommodations, sellers can reduce stress, avoid financial surprises, and maximize the success of their home sale.

Wreaths Across America

Each year, millions of American come together to remember the fallen, honor those who serve and their families and teach the next generation about the value of freedom. The national Wreaths Across America Remembrance Day is observed in local, state, and national cemeteries across all 50 states.

Did you know that in Maine, live Evergreen Wreaths are prepared 52 days prior to shipping, 90,000 wreaths are made each day! In 2024, volunteers placed more than 3.1 million veterans’ wreaths at 4,900 participating locations nationwide, recognizing the service of veterans by speaking each name aloud.

Wreaths Across America volunteers work throughout the year to ensure interred Veterans are acknowledged, their families and living veterans receive recognition, and future generations learn about freedom.

This year, ceremonies are being held for the first time at Mariposa Gardens Memorial (400 S Power, Mesa, AZ) and for the fifth year at Mountain View Cemetery (7900 E. Main Street, Mesa, AZ).

Both ceremonies are scheduled for December 13th, beginning at 10:00am, followed by wreath laying at 10:30am. The public is invited to attend and participate. Please bring your lawn chairs for the ceremony. Children aged 7 to 14 who are interested in participating in the ceremonies are encouraged to contact Nancy Fassbender via email; 20 participants are being sought.

This free event requires support from the community. Mariposa Gardens will have approximately 500 wreaths, including two different sizes. Mountain View Cemetery contains 2,350 veteran graves, and the goal is to sponsor a wreath for each grave with the assistance of volunteers.

To contribute, visit www.wreathsacrossamerica. org/az0190p, or mail checks to Wreaths Across America—Nancy Fassbender, 4657 S. Desert Dawn, Gold Canyon, AZ 85118. Each sponsored wreath costs $17.

For every wreath sponsored, Wreaths Across America donates $5 to benefit local veterans; these donations have supported initiatives such as service dogs, transportation, and housing. Sponsorship contributes to both commemorating interred veterans and supporting those in need.

Major sponsors for this event include American First, Crescent Crown, Guild Mortgage, Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter 2560, VFW Post 9399 Auxiliary, Waste Management, Mountain View Cemetery, Bashas, and Texas RoadHouse in Mesa and Gilbert.

Volunteers are encouraged to register by emailing nfass@ hotmail.com. Donuts and coffee will be provided, and Texas Roadhouse will serve lunch to volunteers. Registration helps organizers plan accordingly. Please specify which cemetery you prefer to volunteer at.

FINANCIAL FOCUS®

MATTRUPPERT

The transition from military to civilian life brings countless adjustments. It also marks a good time to review how you’re taking charge of your financial future. Veteran Saves Week is Nov. 4-7 and an opportunity to focus on building financial confidence and creating a solid foundation for your new chapter.

Now in its second year, Veteran Saves Week centers around one core message: No matter where you are on your financial journey, small steps can lead to lasting change. Here are a few tips to help:

Understand the financial shift. If you’ve recently re-entered civilian life, it’s important to identify any gaps between your income and expenses. A key part of this gap often comes from the loss of military allowances, such as the Basic

Health benefits represent another shift. While you received health care through TRICARE on active duty, you might be eligible for TRICARE for Life and Veterans Administration benefits, but you may still need to supplement this coverage with a group health care plan from your employer or purchase it independently.

Build a budget. Getting a clear picture of your finances helps you make informed decisions. Look at your monthly income, expenses and savings to understand your starting point.

One strategy you may find useful is the 50/30/20 rule. With this, you divide your monthly take-home pay into three parts: 50% for needs like housing, utilities, food and insurance, 30% for wants and 20% for savings and debt repayment.

Your monthly budget should include building an emergency fund, paying down high-rate debt and saving for retirement. It may help to use budgeting apps that categorize expenses and identify areas where you

Building an emergency fund becomes even more critical during transition. Aim for three to six months of cash savings to provide a safety net for living expenses while you establish

Don’t overlook the available retirement planning tools. Even if you will have a pension, you might consider putting money into an IRA, or a 401k if one is available to you through a new employer, or into stocks and bonds to keep building toward your long-term goals. It’s also important to obtain a current Social Security statement since active-duty military

There are transition support programs through the military and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, which also offer debt relief programs and

Consider connecting with a financial advisor who understands the unique challenges veterans face during and after transition. They can help you create a strategy that maximizes your benefits and helps position you for long-term

Consistency is essential for making progress toward long-term goals, fostering strong relationships, and establishing stability in both your professional and personal life. By adhering to reliable habits and honoring commitments, even when circumstances shift, we create an anchor of steadiness in a world that is often unpredictable. This characteristic is particularly apparent in November, a month that highlights gratitude and appreciation—qualities rooted in consistent practices, collective values, and established traditions.

Consistency affects all areas of life, linking our daily habits to our goals. Whether we strive for personal achievements, develop healthy habits, or nurture relationships, it is our consistent actions that transform plans into tangible outcomes. Small, regular efforts—such as exercising, studying, or expressing gratitude—bring gradual but significant improvements. Over time, these persistent actions accumulate, resulting in meaningful and lasting change.

Maintaining consistency is essential for establishing and sustaining trust. When our actions and words are reliable, others learn what to expect from us, forming the foundation of strong relationships within families, friendships, and communities. Trust is built through ongoing, consistent dedication to supporting others, rather than isolated actions. In contrast, inconsistency can lead to confusion, disappointment, and a breakdown of trust.

Each November offers a dedicated period for reflection, reconnection, and the reaffirmation of core values. Setting aside time to gather and express gratitude highlights the importance of appreciation in both personal and professional spheres. This annual pause encourages us to count our blessings, acknowledge the efforts of those around us, and strengthen our relationships.

THE IMPORTANCE AND POWER OF CONSISTENCY IN OUR LIVES

Thanksgiving serves as a powerful symbol for the broader impact of consistency. Through annual traditions, families and communities stay connected to their histories and shape their futures. The values reinforced by consistent practice - gratitude, generosity, and togetherness - cannot be limited to one day or one month. When integrated into daily life, these values inspire us to act with greater intention and kindness.

Just as regular effort leads to personal development, a consistent focus on gratitude fosters a more compassionate society. By reminding ourselves and future generations of what truly matters -connection, appreciation, and the courage to be present for one another year after year - we nurture lasting bonds and a sense of community.

Is consistency the key to living a more satisfying life? Yes, Consistencywhether in habits, routines, or thought patterns - can be transformative. From enhancing mental and physical health to influencing the course of our personal and professional lives, its impact is both profound and far-reaching. Consistent effort, such as maintaining a healthy diet, sticking to an exercise routine, or committing time to personal growth, compounds over time and leads to substantial, enduring change.

Consistency means committing to a behavior or thought pattern over time. It involves making a choice and following through repeatedly. In terms of habits and routines, this translates to maintaining regular practices—whether it’s a morning jog, evening meditation, or dedicating time each day to learning a new skill. This steady approach is not about being rigid but about providing a stable foundation for improvement and growth.

The value of consistency extends to both physical and mental health. Physically, a regular routine supports better health outcomes, including improved

cardiovascular fitness and stronger muscles. Mentally, it offers stability and predictability, bringing comfort in a chaotic world. By incorporating consistency into our lives, we create a structure that enhances focus, reduces anxiety, and delivers a sense of achievement.

Establishing a daily routine with healthy habits—such as regular physical activity, adequate sleep, and balanced nutrition— is more than just scheduling tasks; it’s a commitment to your health every day. A well-designed routine is flexible enough to support you on difficult days and energizing on good days, helping you maintain morale and resilience. By developing such routines, you address immediate needs and invest in long-term well-being. Each small, consistent action contributes significantly to your overall health and leads to a life that is healthier, more fulfilling, and rewarding.

Several long-term benefits to incorporating consistency into your life include improved health and well-being and better mental health. Maintaining routines and habits, especially those that involve self-care and mindfulness, leads to improved mental health, reduced anxiety and depression, and greater overall happiness. Additionally, when you are working consistently towards and achieving your goals, it boosts self-esteem and increases confidence in your abilities.

Consistency is not about making drastic changes, but about steady, incremental efforts that compound over time. By embracing consistency as a daily practice, you can open doors to a healthier, happier, and more fulfilled life. Making gratitude and thankfulness a daily habit can help you move closer to living your best life. Start with small steps, remain committed, and allow your journey of consistency to begin.
