My Biggest Renovation Regret

When my husband and I bought our home, we had absolutely no budget for renovations. There was no team of tradies, no grand renovation loan, and certainly no reality TV-style makeover waiting to happen. It was just the two of us, a house that needed a lot of love, and a determination to figure things out ourselves.

Over the next two to three years, we sanded, painted, patched, pulled things apart, put them back together, and learned more from YouTube than I ever thought possible. Looking back, my biggest regret isn't any of the mistakes we made. It's how long I spent putting off the simple jobs. For some reason, I convinced myself that painting a windowsill would take more than an entire weekend. Touching up trim felt exhausting before I'd even picked up

a paintbrush. I'd walk past little projects every day thinking, "I'll do that later."

Then later would turn into months. Which embarrassingly turned into a year.

What I've learned is that most of the jobs I dreaded were nowhere near as difficult as I imagined. A couple of windowsills can be painted in an afternoon. A tired-looking room can be transformed over a weekend. One wall of colour can completely change how a space feels.

The hardest part is often just starting.

If there's one thing I wish I'd known sooner, it's that you don't have to renovate an entire house at once. Pick one room. One project. One weekend. Progress doesn't have to be dramatic to be meaningful.

Colours That Inspire Joy & Whimsy

After a long and gloomy winter, New Zealanders are looking to invite warmth, lightness, and optimism back into their lives – starting at home. This summer, Dulux Colour Forecasters predict a move toward romantic tones and airy pastels that promise to uplift, soothe, and spark a more hopeful outlook.

“Dulux Ethereal - one of three palettes from the Dulux Colour Forecast 2026 - offers a dreamy combination of colours that can be layered and combined to restore joy in our homes this summer,” says Davina Harper, Dulux Colour Specialist.

Designed with summer living in mind, the Ethereal palette is soft, feminine and whimsical, evoking a sense of serenity through delicate pastel tones. Rounded furniture, tactile finishes and curved accessories perfectly complement these hues, resulting in interiors that feel light, gentle and inviting.

“The Ethereal palette is filled with colours that will resonate with homeowners,” adds Harper. “They’re subtle, versatile and easy to work with in any style of home.”

Harper adds that this shift toward softer, more romantic colour reflects a collective desire to rediscover beauty in the everyday. “In a world marked by uncertainty, we’re seeking ways to create calm and nurture our emotional wellbeing. The Ethereal palette allows homeowners to do just that – every colour has an emotive quality that can transform a space into a beautiful sanctuary.”

Lighter shades such as Dulux Lake Camp and Dulux Waitiki Landing are ideal for smaller rooms, helping to create the impression of a more open, airy space. Pinks and greens pair beautifully together, with Dulux Silver Thaw working as a warm neutral alongside the depth of Dulux Wainui Beach for a grounded, calming effect. For those seeking a soft, tonal scheme, Dulux Aroma and Dulux Mask layer seamlessly to create a serene, harmonious look.

To bring the Ethereal palette to life, Dulux teamed up with Stylist Bree Banfield to transform a family home – taking it from a neutral, mostly white backdrop to a soft, pastel-filled escape.

Banfield explains that the key to capturing a summer mood is choosing colours that lift the space and spark joy – think sun-faded pastels, soft blues that echo the beach, or even fresh citrusinspired hues that bring in a sunny vibe.

“In the living room, we wrapped the curved walls in Dulux Lake Camp and painted the ceiling in Dulux Waitiki Landing,” says Banfield. “That simple change instantly opened up the space, making it feel cooler, calmer and so much more inviting.”

Banfield also leaned into the room’s architecture, using its curves to enhance Dulux Ethereal’s playful, soft charcter. “This palette is all about creating a mood that feels effortless and light, highlighting the gentle lines of the space helps emphasise the playful mood,” she says. Banfield utilised curved furniture and rounded, tactile accessories - including a boucle coffee table, woven rug, curvy occasional chair and oversized cushions – to echo the shapes of the room and reinforce the dreamy, relaxed mood. Pastel-toned sculptural ceramics provided the final touch.

Dulux Mt Stevens was used on the cabinetry, while Dulux Wainui Beach echoed through soft furnishings to create a seamless flow between the room. “Through colour and styling these spaces were transformed into rooms you want to linger in,” Banfield adds. “The soft pinks, blues and greens set a calm, relaxed tone that still feels uplifting. The mood feels lighter, creating that effortless feeling we associate with summer.”

In the main bedroom, the team took a bolder approach, colour-drenching the walls and ceiling in Dulux Mask, a moody,

romantic pink that completely transformed the space. “Going from plain white to this deep, embracing pink has given the room such a dreamy, elegant feel,” Harper adds. “Colour drenching is such a powerful way to uplift a space and make it feel both interesting and unified.”

Rather than starting from scratch, Banfield worked with what was already in the room. She kept the existing cabinetry and linens, then layered in fresh details –floral-patterned cushions, artwork and a lamp with textural accents – to create a bedroom that feels romantic, restorative and effortlessly summery.

“It doesn’t take a full renovation to transform a room,” Banfield explains. “Simple updates like new bedlinen, light cotton or linen throws, or even swapping out artwork can completely reset the mood for the season. Don’t be afraid to mix pattern and colour in unexpected ways –it’s those combinations that really bring the Ethereal palette to life.”

Reinventing a 90s Balustrade

There are some parts of a house you simply learn to live with. My staircase was one of them.

It was classic 1990s timber. Honeytoned wood that had seen better days, complete with years of claw marks from the previous owners’ cats. Every time I walked past it, I noticed the scratches, the dents and the tired finish that made the whole stairwell feel dated. Replacing it seemed like the obvious solution, until we started looking into it.

A full replacement would cost thousands. And because the railing is slightly lower than modern building codes, it would never qualify as a proper timber restoration anyway. In other words, saving the wood was not really an option. So while I save to replace it eventually, I decided to reinvent it.

The process started with a full sand down. Every spindle, every curve, every scratch. Staircases have far more detail than you realise until you try to sand one. Once the surface was smooth, I applied Dulux One Step Prep primer to give the old timber a clean base.

Then came the fun part. I chose Dulux Aquanamel in Manapouri, a bold, bright blue that instantly transforms the space. It is not a shy colour. And that was exactly the point. Our stairwell is tall and filled with natural light, and I wanted something punchy that would bring life into the hallway rather than disappear into it.

Painting a balustrade is a lesson in patience. There are dozens of narrow spindles and small edges that require careful brushwork. Aquanamel goes on beautifully, but the blue needed several coats to reach that rich, saturated finish. It was slow work, but incredibly satisfying watching the colour build.

To balance the blue, I sanded and repainted all the surrounding wood trim in Dulux Aquanamel Berkshire White in semi-gloss. The crisp white helps the Manapouri blue pop and keeps the overall look feeling fresh rather than overwhelming.

The result completely changed the space.

What used to be scratched timber that I barely noticed is now a feature that draws your eye the moment you walk in. The blue travels up the staircase like a ribbon of colour through the hallway. It feels bold, playful and modern.

Most importantly, it makes me smile every time I see it.

Sometimes the best renovation decisions are not the expensive ones. Sometimes they are just a few hours of sanding, a good primer, a couple layers of paint and the courage to choose a colour that makes you happy.

A Room with a Hue

If you've scrolled through Instagram lately, you've probably been bombarded with mural art that sends you into a whirlwind of inspiration.

Those fun wiggles, eye-catching squiggles, and retro vibes are spreading like wildfire. Naturally, I decided my dining room needed some love, and what better way to make a statement than to go for a mural? I turned my dining space into a sensational backdrop that elicits "wow" from anyone who walks in. And you can do it too!

First things first. Before you get to painting, get yourself some drop cloths. Trust me, cleaning splatters off the floor is not how you'll want to celebrate your new mural. Lay down those cloths to catch any spills or drips. It’s better to be safe than sorry.

Before you pick up that paintbrush, you'll need some painter's tape, and don't skimp out on this one. I recommend going for

the Scotch brand, even if it's a bit pricier. The investment pays off by preventing bleed-through and giving you crisp, clean lines. Use it to outline the areas you'll paint, especially those tricky corners and edges.

Smooth and clean walls are your canvas, so make sure to prepare them well. Patch up any cracks and sand down any rough spots before washing the wall clean. Then, prime it to make sure the vibrant colours adhere well and pop as they should.

Feeling a bit nervous about bringing your design to life? No worries! A projector can be a lifesaver. Simply project your design onto the wall, and use a pencil to trace over it. This ensures you’ll get the proportions and details just right. No more winging it and regretting it later!

When it comes to paint, I opted for the

vibrant, bold colours. Acrylics are great for durability and vivid hues. As for brushes, go big and go small. You’ll need a range for different areas and details. And don't forget a sponge, roller, or even a can of spray paint for added texture and flair.

Now that everything's set, go ahead and paint! Start with broader strokes and move on to the finer details, always keeping an eye on the drying times. Use multiple layers to give depth and vibrancy to your colours.

So, if you’re ready to add some spice to your living space, a mural might just be the answer. Get those supplies ready, and let your wall be your canvas. With a little bit of prep and a lot of creativity, you'll have a masterpiece that turns heads and sets hearts aflutter.

Chosen for its beautiful grain and natural warmth, the timber adds character while still feeling timeless and easy to live with. Thoughtful finishing touches, such as matching veneer edging and a subtle stain to enhance the oak’s grain, give the cabinetry a furniturelike quality that feels far more bespoke than anything flat-packed.

What’s refreshing about this project is how grounded the approach to bespoke has been. It wasn’t about creating something flashy for the sake of it, but about making considered choices that would stand the test of time.

Beyond the materials, bespoke cabinetry has allowed the home to work better for the way Wade and Stefanie actually live. Storage has been designed where it’s needed most. Spaces flow naturally. New Kid on the Kitchen Block

There’s a new kid on the kitchen bench, and it’s already causing a stir. The Thermomix TM7, the latest all-in-one kitchen machine from Vorwerk, has landed, and it’s not just a small update. It’s a proper, topto-bottom redesign that promises to change the way we cook at home. And yes, it's as impressive as everyone’s saying.

If you’ve ever met a Thermomix owner, you’ll know they talk about their machine like it’s part of the family. It sautés, steams, chops, blends, weighs, kneads, stirs, cooks, and becomes your sous chef, kitchen coach, and clean-up crew in one sleek unit. For years, the TM6 was the gold standard. But now the TM7 has entered the chat, and it’s got people rethinking their loyalty.

As someone who’s previously dabbled with a TM6 but never fully committed, I was curious. Is the new one really that different? Could it turn a casual cook like me into someone who actually enjoys the dinner rush? In short: yes. And here’s why.

The first thing you’ll notice is the look. The TM7 has had a complete glow-up. The familiar arms that once held the bowl in place are gone, replaced with a flat, more

open design that looks and feels more modern. It’s also available in matte black, which just feels a little more grown-up. The screen is a huge 10 inches now, basically the size of a tablet, and it’s so much more intuitive. It’s bright, responsive, and makes scrolling through Cookidoo recipes feel like flipping through a beautifully designed digital cookbook.

But the real magic is what’s happening under the hood. One of the most talkedabout features is “open cooking” and yes, it’s exactly what it sounds like. For the first time, you can cook with the lid off. That might not sound revolutionary, but it changes everything. Want to stir through ingredients while a sauce simmers? Go for it. Need to taste and adjust as you go? Easy. It gives you the freedom of a frypan with the smarts of a Thermomix. There are

limitations (you can’t crank the heat up with the lid off), but for gentle sautéing, it’s a game changer.

The motor is noticeably quieter, especially at lower speeds. I used to avoid using the TM6 at night because it could get a bit whirry, but the TM7 hums along much more politely. It’s a small thing, but if you’ve ever brushed against a hot metal bowl while multitasking with kids, you’ll understand why this matters.

They’ve also packed in new cooking modes, including browning, sous vide and a slow cooker setting. I tried the browning function for caramelising onions and the results were miles ahead of what I’ve done in previous Thermomix models. It’s still not going to replace your cast-iron pan, but it’s a solid step closer.

Another win? The Varoma (that’s the steaming tray) is now 45 percent larger. It means you can batch-cook more veggies, dumplings or bao buns in one go, which is

ideal for families or if you’re into meal prep.

So what’s the catch? Honestly, not many. The TM7 is a bit heavier and the bowl can take some effort to clean, especially the new lid mechanism. It also isn’t compatible with your old TM6 accessories, which might be frustrating if you’re upgrading. And of course, it’s not cheap. The launch price in New Zealand is $2,849 and while it includes a few extras and a Cookidoo trial, it’s a serious investment. That said, Thermomix owners don’t tend to regret it. In fact, most of them end up evangelising it.

For anyone new to the Thermomix world, this is the best place to jump in. It’s smarter, quieter and more versatile than anything they’ve made before. And if you already have a TM6? The upgrade decision comes down to how often you cook and how much you value those new features. For me, the open cooking alone was enough to justify it.

From Dated to Daring How I Revived My Bathroom with Colour

It was one of those discoveries that makes your stomach drop. We had to repair the damage immediately, but the real heartbreak came when I realised the black mould had seeped into our beautiful, exposed wood chapel-style ceiling. Treating the mould bleached the timber beyond saving, so what was once a charming architectural feature became patchy and pale. Luckily, the ceiling wasn’t made from anything precious (not kauri, just low-grade timber), so I took it as an opportunity to rethink the entire space.

When we moved into our home, the bathroom was a time capsule from 1990. Untouched, uninspired, and hiding a very unwelcome surprise. The bathtub on the second floor had a major leak, revealing black mould beneath. GET THE LOOK

Towels – Hommey Hunker Stool in Forest Green

I worked with Dulux, who were absolutely fantastic at guiding me through how to tackle mould and properly prepare the space. After treating the mould and drying it out for a few days, I sanded and prepped the ceiling. Then we used Dulux PRECISION High Opacity Blocker to seal and prime, followed by Ceiling White PLUS Kitchen & Bathroom tinted to Dulux Morrinsville. For the walls, we used Dulux Wash & Wear Plus Kitchen & Bathroom in Low Sheen in the hues Lyall Bay and Shotover Street. A daring and perfect pair to create my now-iconic blue and green stripes. My husband was a little worried when I pitched him the idea, but luckily, he had faith in my overall vision.

Initially, I’d started painting the walls black (rookie mistake!) before realising that you can’t spot mould under dark paint. It was a lesson learned early: sometimes a setback opens the door to something far better.

Once the mould was gone and the ceiling repainted in crisp white, the transformation began. I didn’t have the budget for a complete remodel, so this had to be a makeover powered by creativity, not cash. I kept the existing vanity, shower, and toilet in place to avoid costly plumbing changes. The room's structure remained the same, but the energy shifted completely.

The bold vertical stripes were my gamechanger. People often think they’re wallpaper, but every line is hand-painted. The combination of Lyall Bay’s cool aqua and Shotover Street’s rich green feels fresh, fearless, and fun. Every time I walk in, I’m so happy! All of my friends love it too, except for my mum who (unsurprisingly) wanted me to paint it white. The colour brings life back into what was once a gloomy, dated space.

To finish, I swapped out the cabinet handles for affordable replacements from my local Mitre 10. It was a small, inexpensive

change that made a big visual difference. I added hot pink Hommey towels to play off the vibrant walls, keeping the space feeling loud, joyful, and full of personality. And because even bathrooms deserve good design, the Hunker stool in Forest Green. A stylish, surprisingly chic poop stool that matches the walls perfectly and adds a wink of humour and function to the space.

The vinyl flooring will eventually go when I move onto the next phase (tiling the shower and floor), but for now, it still ties the space together nicely. This makeover was proof that you don’t need a huge budget to make a room feel brand new. With the right prep, a few tins of paint, and a bold idea, you can completely transform a space. It’s not just about paint on the walls, it’s about confidence, colour, and a bit of fun.

STEAM CLEANING YOUR MICROWAVE

By placing a bowl of lemon juice in your microwave and bringing it to a boil for just two minutes, the steam will soften any debris stuck in the microwave. By simply wiping off any residue with a cloth afterwards, the microwave will be left citrusy fresh.

PAIN IN THE GRASS

Grass stains are almost inevitable, especially for young kids, but the tough stains are surprisingly simple to remove. Adding 100 ml of Vanish gel into four litres of cold water (at a maximum temperature of 40°) to create the perfect mix for any stubborn stain. Soak coloured clothes for up to one hour, and white clothes for up to six hours. Simply finishing it off with a normal wash in the machine, with an extra dose of Vanish, will do the trick.

TOO SMALL, TOO TALL?

One of the most frequent issues to come from the laundry is the shrinking of clothes. Often, this happens purely because it can be easy to forget to check whether or not something can be tumble-dried. Consider putting clothes you don’t want to be distorted into a washable laundry bag, creating the perfect signal of what should be hung on the line. The bags are easy to spot, and a simple way to keep clothes in the best possible condition.

THE SOLUTION FOR DISAPPEARING SOCKS

Nothing can be more frustrating than losing one sock of a pair. The same mesh bag approach can be a clever way to keep socks from separating in the wash. This will enable all socks to stay together and will make it easier to sort postwash. Keeping socks together will ultimately create better organisation in the wardrobe, and will ensure that no socks go walkabout on their trip to the laundry.

Let's start with the positives. The dry vacuuming performance of the Dyson V15s Detect Submarine Complete is absolutely outstanding. With Dyson's Hyperdymium motor delivering powerful suction and the Optic Fluffy Cleaner Head illuminating dust with precision, my floors have never looked cleaner. It effortlessly tackles dirt and debris, leaving my home feeling fresh and spotless.

But when it comes to the wet roller head, I have to admit I'm a bit disappointed.

Despite the promise of innovative hydration, absorption, and extraction technologies, I found that it fell short of expectations. The water distribution seemed uneven, and the suction power wasn't quite up to par. I had hoped for a more thorough clean, especially on tough stains and spills, but unfortunately, it didn't deliver the results I was hoping for.

While the concept of a wet-and-dry vacuum cleaner is promising, it's clear that there's room for improvement in the wet cleaning functionality of the Dyson

V15s Detect Submarine Complete. In the meantime, I'll be sticking to the dry vacuuming capabilities, which truly shine and make this machine a worthwhile investment.

The Robot that Quietly Took Over the Cleaning

I’ve been using the Dreame Aqua10 Ultra Track S for a couple of months now, and it has become one of those devices that quietly earns its place in your space. It feels very focused on hygiene and long-term cleanliness rather than quick surface-level shine, which I appreciate in a robot vacuum mop that is meant to be doing regular, background cleaning.

One of the standout features for me is the hot-water mopwashing system. Being able to clean mop pads with heated water makes a noticeable difference in removing built-up grime and everyday residue, and it feels far more hygienic than rinsing with cold water. The base station also uses heat to dry the mop, helping prevent the damp smell that some robot mops can develop over time. It gives the whole setup a cleaner, more sanitary feel. The AI and camera navigation are genuinely impressive. Its cord recognition and obstacle avoidance are among the best I’ve used, and it confidently navigates around cables and floor clutter without getting tangled. The app experience is also

a highlight. Being able to manually drive it around is weirdly fun, and the little pet snapshots it captures along the way are unexpectedly cute. It sounds gimmicky, but it actually makes interacting with the robot feel more engaging rather than purely functional.

Where I am less convinced is the mopping action itself. Even on the highest settings, the Track S feels more like a thorough wipe than a true mechanical scrub, and it does not quite reach the edges and skirting boards. This is not necessarily a fault of the system; it is simply the nature of its trackstyle mopping compared to roller scrubbers. If you are fussy about corners and deepedge cleaning, you will notice it over time. That said, the results are hard to argue

with. When we first put it to work in the office, the mop water came back black for several days, which was confronting but reassuring. After a couple of weeks of consistent use, the water started coming back clear. It was a very satisfying sign that, even without aggressive scrubbing, it was genuinely lifting old grime out of the floors over time.

Overall, the Dreame Aqua10 Ultra Track S feels like a smart, well-considered robot vacuum mop that prioritises hygiene, navigation and consistency. After two months of everyday use, it has proven reliable, genuinely useful, and the kind of device you quickly stop thinking about because it is just doing its job in the background.
