Lost Your Sense of Taste or Smell? 7 Tips for Eating Well Some loss of taste and smell is natural with aging, especially after age 60. However, other factors can contribute to loss of taste and smell including allergies, certain medications, some cancer treatments, and a Covid-19 infection. Our senses of taste and smell are so intricately linked that when you lose your sense of smell, it can often feel like you’ve also lost your ability to taste. So, what can you do to make eating more enjoyable? Here’s some advice from clinical dieticians at The University of Texas’ MD Anderson Cancer Center.
try foods that are different from what you would normally eat. Try ones with ingredients that pack a real flavor punch such as ginger, mint, vinegar, onion, garlic, or chili powder.
1. Get moving - Rev up your body’s natural craving for calories through exercise. Set aside at least 30 minutes a day to get moving – even if it’s only a brisk walk around the neighborhood.
6. Tinker with temperatures - Chilled or frozen foods can have a more pleasing taste than warm or hot foods. Try yogurts, smoothies, shakes, egg salad or frozen fruit.
2. Make it a production - Set the stage for culinary satisfaction by dusting off your fanciest place settings, and make every meal an event. Get creative with herbal garnishes, so the end result is as visually appealing as it is tasty. Presentation matters, especially when you’re not that interested in eating.
7. Stay flexible – and give yourself time Foods can taste different from one day to the next, so it’s important to persist – and adapt as your palate changes. If you notice foods tasting salty or bitter; use honey, jam, or agave nectar to add sweetness. If, on the other hand, foods are too sweet, add something sour or slightly bitter, like vinegar or tart citrus fruit. If you have a sweet tooth, don’t underestimate chocolate, many people can taste chocolate when they can’t taste anything else.
3. Don’t underestimate the power of sour - Lemon juice or anything tart can stimulate saliva production, which is essential for taste. Try starting a meal with some lemon sorbet or add a squeeze of fresh lemon juice to wake up your taste buds. 4. Be willing to step outside your comfort zone - If old favorites aren’t cutting it anymore, Click the links for more content!
5. Try different food textures - When your ability to perceive flavor is limited, the way foods feel can have greater significance. Try different combinations of textures in your meals, such as crunchy apples with sticky peanut butter. Don’t forget about liquids like smoothies or fortified beverages.
Finding things that will work for you takes trial and error, and it’s an ongoing process. It takes people different amounts of time to recover those senses, so keep trying.

Eliminate Clutter with 6 Easy Steps!
Lindsey Swan, Professional Organizer, Minnestoa One of the best ways I help my clients is to go to their homes and organize it for them. If you don’t have the ability to bring in a professional organizer, you are not out of luck. Follow me @organizelikelindsey and I’ll teach you all sorts of tips and tricks you can use in your home.
54% of Americans are overwhelmed by the amount of clutter they have, but 78% have no idea what to do with it. Do you find it hard to let go of items in your home? If your answer is yes, you are not alone. Most people have a hard time letting go of things we have accumulated. Most the time we think, “if I let it go, then I am being wasteful”, or “I spent money on that, we can’t just get rid of it!”
Have you ever considered the fact that by not using the thing you are holding onto is already being wasteful? Instead of using it, you are storing it. For what? Just in case you might use it some day? Because you spent $30 or even $100 on it? Instead of getting rid of it, we keep it hidden in our closets, drawers, under our beds, garages, and storage rooms. Who wants to take up valuable space for items we aren’t using?! Yet, 80% of the items people keep are never used. What if we cleared out the garage so we could park in it, or only kept the clothes we wore, making room for the rest of our clothes to fit comfortably? What if instead of being worried about what to do with it all we donated those items we aren’t using? What if the item we donated really blessed someone else’s life when they found it? Maybe you are even extra motivated and decided to post it on Facebook marketplace. That’s great! However you decide to get it out, just do it! BE CAREFUL. If you aren’t 4 l www.swmlife.com
going to really get around to selling the items you think you are, it’s not worth keeping around to just clutter up your valuable space. Get rid of it. Donate it. I promise it will make you happy. There’s not much more I love doing than throwing things away. For me it represents a burden lifted off my shoulders. One less item in the house is one less thing for me to pick up - doing that over and over adds up so quickly! If you are feeling the need to start but don’t know where, pick one room. When that room is done move to the next. I feel more motivated to keep going when I see progress being made. If I focus on all the clothes in the house, I may feel like we got rid of clothes, but the rest of the house may be in shambles. If I do one entire room I feel like I can put a big check mark next to it. Then I move onto the next room and feel motivated to keep going because I am liking what I am seeing. Progress is contagious.
Follow these steps to organize any space in your home Step 1: Remove everything - when starting any space, first and foremost, remove EVERYTHING. When I say everything, I mean everything! If you want to clean the closet, take everything out and put in on the bed. If you want to clean the pantry, take everything out and put in on the counters, the tables, and the floors if you have to. Step 2: Edit - One by one touch each item and figure out its purpose. Are you keeping it? Do you need it? Or could you let it go? Does it fit you? Is it expired? Could someone else use the item more than you? Or maybe you simply just don’t like it anymore. LET IT GO!
Step 3: Get rid of it - Once you have identified all the stuff you are getting rid of, put it in the car and take it to a donation center as soon as possible. I think most of us know someone (perhaps ourselves) who puts donations in the garage to drop off at a later time. Months later they find themselves rummaging through it because they forgot to donate it in the first place. This gives them an opportunity to second guess their decision. But why? Don’t do that to yourself. If you didn’t need it for months, it’s likely you don’t need it at all. The faster you get it out the of the house, the quicker you too will feel that freeing feeling of letting go. Step 4: Find everything a home - Now that you have identified the things you want to keep, start putting them away. Keep like items together. In your closet long sleeve shirts should be by other long sleeve shirts. In your kitchen, baking things should be by all the other baking items, etc... Find a home for each and every item. If you are having a hard time still fitting it
Before

all, it’s very likely you need containers. Step 5: Label - Last but not least: label, label, label. We can spend countless hours organizing the lives of our children, spouses, and ourselves only to revert back to our old ways in short order. When we label our shelves and baskets we are creating a home for that item to go back into. Don’t forget this important step. It’s a game changer for the entire family. Step 6: Be Patient - As you go through this process be patient with yourself. It doesn’t happen overnight. Like anything else, you’ll get better with practice. Don’t give up. Keep chipping away at it, bit by bit. You’ve got this! And remember, there isn’t always just one right way to do it! Really, it comes down to personal preference. What makes you happy? Prioritize what’s important to you and go from there, and you can’t go wrong. Well, except matching hangers. I think everyone should always have matching hangers.

HVAC Filters
how clean is your air?
Nate Johnson brings his expertise in retail, manufacturing, and construction to the SunWest team.
The sun is shining and the sky is blue and beautiful! It’s beginning to warm up a little which means that Spring Is Here! You know what else that means…it is spring cleaning time! It’s time to roll up them sleeves and make sure that all of the colonies of dust bunnies are chased out of Dodge. Which also means, it just might be time to change out your air filters for your home HVAC system. All of that deep cleaning can stir up the dust and hair particles. Changing your air filter is a good way to help maintain a better air quality in your home and help extend the life of the HVAC unit.
Air filters are only meant to last for a set amount of time. If it goes too long, filters can load too much and collapse; creating gaps for the air to just go around the filter. When you buy a new filter, the packaging will state how long it should last. But don’t wait until that date to change it! Take that date as the absolute maximum and change your filter earlier, especially if you are experiencing lots of pollutants or particles in the air. Allergy and flu seasons, for example, are good times to make sure you have a new filter, and if you have pets that shed you may find you need them changed more often.

To stay on top of your filter changes, you should set a schedule for changing them. There are many types of filters to choose from and the proper filter may vary from system to system. There are washable/lifetime filters, pleated air filters, HEPA air filters and there are even air filters that connect via Bluetooth to a mobile device that can tell you the filter efficiency and life left of that air filter. Whatever type of filter you choose, make a routine schedule according to your personal and specific system needs. Whether that schedule be set around the changing of the seasons, every 3 months, every other month, or every single month, setting a regular schedule will help ensure your home’s air is always clean.

Dead...
or just Dormant? As spring is upon us, we get excited to see green popping out on plants that have looked dead throughout fall and winter. But what about Nick Boulton provides those that continue to a wealth of landscape knowledge and experilook dead into spring? ence. Connect with Nick The majority of the time at 435-773-6456 or these plants are still in landscape@swmlife.com a dormancy state. In gardening or landscaping, the term “dormancy” is used for perennial plants and their state of a brief metabolic inactivity or minimal activity where they reserve their energy and nutrition and send it to the roots instead of their foliage. Plants typically go dormant in response to adverse growing conditions, such as trees during the colder winter months, or grass during periods of excessive heat or drought. It’s important to remember that plants don’t die at this time but are simply in a hibernation state. While the outer leaves and above-ground foliage may die back, life still lies awake in the roots and core of the plant. Some plants pop back to life in early spring, while Crepe Myrtles, Mexican Petunias and Lantanas have a long dormancy period and don’t get any new green shoots until long after other plants have greened up. Typically Crepe Myrtles, although they look dead during fall, winter and early spring, will snap out of their hibernation 8 l www.swmlife.com
state when the outside temperatures are at a consistent 80 – 85 degrees. Mexican Petunias and Lantanas will sprout new growth from the root balls with warmer temperatures as well. How do you know if your plants are dormant or are, in fact, dead? Here are 3 easy ways to tell: Snap or Flexibility Test - Pick and end of a stem or branch about as big around as a pencil. Try snapping the branch in half by bending it. A dead branch or stem will snap easily and have a dried out look on the inside. On the other hand, a dormant branch will bend and when it splits open, it will expose wet wood on the inside. The Scratch Test - Try scratching part of the bark with your nail or a knife to see if the bark is dry and if the plant tissue under the bark is moist. If it is dry then it could be dead, but if it is moist, it is alive and well. Inspection of the Roots - Inspecting the roots is another way to see if the plant is healthy. This is a lot easier on indoor plants than outdoor plants, but can be done on both. A plant that is dormant will have healthy roots even if the rest of the plant still looks dead. If necessary, you can remove the plant from the pot and see if the roots look fresh and strong or if they have shriveled and died. Just remember to be careful when doing this as this can also hurt the plant if you’re not careful. Good luck with all your planting endeavors.

Mystical Can
We definitely recommend hiring a tour guide for this one. After a scenic four hour drive to Kanab from Utah County, we were so excited to meet up with Brett, our guide from Dreamland Tours. He was a kind fellow who quickly made us feel comfortable and excited to check out their Mystical Slot Canyon with Wandering Families dinosaur tracks. While Looking for fun advenwe signed release forms, tures? Follow along as Brett asked if we would we share the best! @wanderingfamilies like to stop at Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park to let the kids get some pent-up energy out. We, unanimously, agreed to do just that. We stopped there for about 30 minutes or so, but easily could have spent an entire day running, jumping and digging in the soft, cool pink sand. (side note: you can rent ATVs at the state park main entrance) All ten children jumped out of the cars, threw off their shoes and headed up the hill into the park without any hesitation.
E
They ran down the big hills so quickly that we couldn’t keep up and didn’t really try, since we could see them from the top. The juxtaposition between pine trees and Sahara desert-like sand is just so cool. After getting sufficiently covered in sand head-to-toe, we climbed back in the vehicles and went off-roading to the dinosaur tracks. Brett took us to one of the most concentrated section of footprints ever found. He calmly and patiently pointed out the small and large tracks and just let the kiddos run up and over the slick rock. 10 l www.swmlife.com
nyon Most of the time, the kids ran ahead and played and found their own tracks (some real, some not). Finding this “quicksand” was one of the highlights of the dinosaur stop - we could hardly pry their little bodies out of this to continue on our way to the slot canyon. The drive to Mystical Slot Canyon was seriously SO much fun - deep, deep sand and ruts and ups and downs... Brett was a skilled driver and let our children squeal and hang out the window and have the very best time. We quickly ate a snack at the suburbans and headed out through the slot canyon. The red rock with green foliage was stunning. Brett, once again, pointed out the different rocks, formations and interesting features that we should be aware of...even the kids were interested - which, as parents, we recognized as a win! A bit of scrambling as we hiked through the canyon...apparently, this boulder had been recently deposited that month during a flash flood (sure glad we were not there to witness that!) The little ones loved being able to run through the canyon and hear their yells echo against the canyon walls. After playing and hiking for four plus hours, we all were famished so headed back to Kanab for dinner and a well earned rest. Click the links for more content!

Inspirational Programs at the St George Temple Visitor’s Center History of the St George Temple
Stories and Music of Hope
Have you ever wondered about that big white building in the center of town? The St. George Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is a historic building that has dominated the landscape for nearly one and a half centuries.
The St. George Temple Visitors’ Center is featuring inspirational programs on Sunday evenings at 6pm through the end of April. Expected to run approximately 45 minutes, each program will feature a prominent community member - including legislators, educators, historians and city leaders sharing messages and experiences of hope and faith, followed by select community musicians, vocalists, and instrumentalists, sharing songs and music of the same themes.
St. George was a relatively small community when construction of the Temple began in 1871. There were not enough people to build such a monumental building, so construction workers traveled from communities throughout Utah to aid in construction. Most building materials came from areas near St. George. The volcanic rock used for the foundation and sandstone walls came from quarries just a few miles away, while timber was hauled many miles from Pine Valley or Mount Trumbull to become trusses, floors, pews, pulpits, balconies, and beams. Silk from silkworms raised on the local mulberry trees joined the locally grown cotton and wool to be made into carpets and finishes. Learn more about the fascinating history, as well as the current renovation project, in an hourlong presentation at the St George Temple’s Visitor Center. To schedule, please call 928-7104769 or 928-636-1166.

Taming the
Keepsake Clutter Life is a string of great experiences, and we all love to bring something home to remember an epic trip, music festival, or marathon. But what to do with all the souvenirs? And why keep them if you can’t enjoy them? Here are a few tips to tame the keepsake clutter and repurpose your treasures! Kamarie Naase, PCAM®, CMCA®, AMS®, is a Professional Community Association Manager who has been affiliated with SunWest Management and the SunRiver Communities for over 20 years.
Collect Christmas ornaments when you travel? Create a timeline garland by stenciling or writing the year along a ribbon. Weave it through holiday garland or hang alone to display your ornaments by year and relive the journey. Did your chocolates or treats come in a unique basket, box, or tin? Don’t stash them away in a closet! Use them to store everyday items, and enjoy the memories every time you pull them out.
Wooden shoes make a great door stop or pot for succulents. Magnets don’t need to stay on the fridge, an enclosed and framed magnetic board will keep them dust free! Hang charms, trinkets, or spoons from string lighting to create a conversation piece, unique holiday table runner or add to any décor. Love that unique oil or wine bottle? Display with others to catch the light, or use as a flower vase or candle holder. Do you have a Venetian mask, Scottish tartan, boomerang from Australia, or a piece of the Berlin Wall? Shadow box frames are a great way to show off your treasures with a photograph of you there! And what to do with all those marathon and concert t-shirts? Fold them so the applique is front and center, and lay them side by side on the floor to create a colorful mosaic. Then get the ladder out and take a picture to frame and proudly display. Keep the memory and donate the t-shirts. The point is, don’t leave your treasured memories in a box, unseen and unenjoyed. Your life’s journey and accomplishments are uniquely you and deserve to be displayed!

Beyond the
Seasons Spring is almost here! We celebrate the first day of spring on March 21st on the Spring Equinox. Equinox means “equal night.” On this day we have sunlight for 12 hours and no sun for 12 hours - across the entire globe. The same is true for September 21st, the Fall Equinox. On June 21st, the first day of summer, or the Summer Solstice, we have the most hours of sunlight, and on the Winter Solstice, December 21st, the first day of winter, the sun’s southern position creates the longest night. While designating the first day of a new season is fairly well known, did you know we also celebrate four more seasonal dates, collectively called “cross-quarter” days that mark the midpoints between seasons? Groundhog Day has made a history of predicting how much longer winter will last, but the date actually marks the midpoint between the first days of winter and spring. May 1st, or May Day, marks the midpoint between spring and summer. This is traditionally the time to begin spring planting. It’s also an international holiday to honor workers. Perhaps the least known cross-quarter day is the one marking the midpoint between summer and fall. Lammas, or “Loaf Mass Day” on August 1st is traditionally a celebration of the first fruits of the harvest. The last cross quarter day remains the most famous, Halloween. Marking the midpoint between fall and winter, it ushers in a time of darkness and cold. Now, when you think of seasonal celebrations, don’t just think of spring, summer, fall, and winter. Think of Groundhog Day, May Day, Lammas, and Halloween. Ron Smith has spent his career lecturing and teaching astronomy, meteorology, and earth science. In retirement, Ron continues to enjoy sharing his love of science with others.

Birthstone Aquamarine Aquamarine evokes the purity of crystalline waters and the exhilaration and relaxation of the sea. It is calming, soothing, and cleansing, and inspires truth, trust, and letting go. In ancient lore, Aquamarine was believed to be the treasure of mermaids and was used by sailors as a talisman of good luck, fearlessness, and protection. It was also considered a stone of eternal youth and happiness. Today it protects all who travel by, over, or near water, and opens the channels of clear and heartfelt communication.

Joseph Brimer relishes being a problem solver, so he’s a perfect fit for the SunWest team!
When I was growing up, March was a turning point for me every year. I shed the winter blues and the dread of football no longer being on every Sunday, and instead looked forward to basketball. Every March college basketball enters what has been dubbed “March Madness”, where the top 68 teams in the nation compete to crown a champion. Even if you’re not a sports fan I’m sure you’ve heard of March Madness because I would classify it as a cultural phenomenon. Grocery stores decorate in sports themes, some brands change their marketing for it, and even casual fans get in on creating a bracket to guess the outcome.
I personally find the bracket challenge exciting. As someone who grew up in Kansas, I make one bracket that has them as the National Champions and a few others that may be more likely to happen, depending on the year. I even get together with some friends and add to the competition by pooling some money together to give to whoever based on correct guesses of games. ESPN puts on a big contest where they give away money and prizes for each round of the basketball playoffs. But what’s more exciting is the anxiety of watching teams fight hard for their chance to further compete. Over the years I’ve seen success, disappointment, even gruesome injuries to guys giving it their all. The memories I’ve made watching the games make it something that I look forward to every year. Whether you’re excited about upcoming sports or the warmer weather we’ll have, I hope that March is as exciting for you as it is for me.
