Wedding Flowers A ROSE BY ANY OTHER NAME …

Beyond the vows, there are some essentials that make up the key components of wedding design and planning, and understanding the symbolism of some of those components can help bring the bride and groom's vision to life with deeper meaning The wedding dress, the venue, the music, the catering and the flowers could be considered the five pillars of the process. For some, flowers are at the top of this list.

Whether you choose a sleek, minimal design of simple white florals or a rainbow explosion of spring and summer colors on every table and in every bouquet, the flowers you choose have meaning, history and tradition. Floral design is an integral piece of the overall mood and theme of a wedding and, generally, also a good chunk of the budget. Most wedding planners suggest approximately 10%-12% of a couple’s overall expenditures go toward flowers. Obviously, if flowers are your thing, then you’ll want to spend a larger portion of your overall budget, but this is is a good starting guideline.

Where are all these flowers going? Generally, you can count on needing bouquets for the bride and her bridesmaids, boutonnieres for the groom and his groomsmen, floral décor marking the “altar” space or chuppah/archway, aisle markers or runners, and table centerpieces. Beyond that you may have flower girls tossing petals or wearing flower crowns. You may also want floral arrangements or decorations on your bar, dessert table, seating chart display, welcome tables, chair swags, and garlands. It’s a lot and it’s worth hiring a pro.

Choosing in-season, locally-sourced stems are two smart ways to stay within budget. If you are hosting a destination wedding on an island in the middle of winter, your flower budget may increase. And, obviously the more guests you have, the more tables you need and thus more flowers. Be sure to communicate with your florist—show them your inspiration photos, but also let them be creative with their designs! Consider things like heat, wind, and water availability when choosing centerpieces, and don’t forget: your guests want to be able to see each other and see you, so try not to go overboard with your floral tablescapes!

DON’T STRESS ~ T he best way to ensure a stress-free day is to plan ahead. The biggest cause of wedding stress: last-minute details that show up unannounced. So, hire a wedding planner to help guarantee that everything is under control. That way the duty doesn’t fall on close family and kin, and everybody—from the mother of the bride to your family, girlfriends, and the bride and groom—get to relax and have fun! It’s your day, make sure you have the opportunity to enjoy it!

HAVE FUN ~ One of the most common tips given by all our Sun Valley brides is to remember to have fun at your own wedding. Sounds elemental. But with all the details and planning, this simple edict to enjoy the day can often get overlooked. Plan a wedding to reflect your personal style, as well as your likes and loves, and the rest should take care of itself. Just remember to plan a few moments to actually enjoy some of the activities and festivities that you have created.

PREPARE FOR MOUNTAIN WEATHER … AKA “RENT A TENT” ~ Our mountain weather can be, if nothing else, completely unpredictable. We have a saying here that “if you don’t like the weather, wait five minutes and it will change.” While a bit of a local exaggeration, it has snowed in July and even August (a magical occurrence, to be certain, but a shock to anybody in a spaghetti-strap sundress). Of course, it won’t do that on YOUR wedding day, but rent a tent or have a contingency plan just in case. You don’t want to be caught out in the cold.

ALLOW FOR DOWNTIME ~ You and your beloved will be busy greeting out-of-town guests, family, friends and distant relatives that you may have never even seen before. It can be a whirlwind of activity and socializing, so remember to plan a few moments all your own. This can be as simple as a walk by the river after the ceremony or a moment of reflection before your first dance. Everybody is gathered in celebration of you, so take a few moments to enjoy it together.

GET COMFY ~ When choosing foot attire (a tip specific to the ladies), don’t forget to consider the location. Many popular outdoor wedding locations, such as River Run and Trail Creek, are located on grass, which can make walking in high heels in front of 200 guests a challenge. Consider a wedge or platform sandal if you still want height, but leave the spiked heels (which will only sink into the grass) at home— or save them for the rehearsal dinner.

ASK FOR HELP ~ Enlist the support of family and close friends for special projects related to your big day. A sincere request can make them feel special, and also helps to include them in the memory of creating your wedding celebration. Additionally, collaboration on a special project also provides a great way for members from both sides of the family to get to know each other.

PLAN ACTIVITIES ~ Remember that not all of your guests will be consumed with wedding details, so plan fun activities and gatherings

Hiking, biking, golf at Sun Valley Resort (with 45 holes and stunning views), guided or unguided fly fishing, waterskiing, skeet shooting at the Gun Club, horseback riding, ice skating at the historic Sun Valley outdoor rink— there is so much to do, your guests might appreciate a little direction with a few planned events. This also has the added bonus of creating opportunities for guests to mix and mingle—as well as a way to bond over shared experiences.

IT’S IN THE BAG ~ Stay organized by having a bag or tote to corral all your belongings on your wedding day. This applies for both the bride and groom. Chances are that the room you get ready in will probably not be where you are ending the evening and the last thing you want to be thinking about in the final hours is “where did I put my keys / computer / phone / going away shoes” etc. Be sure you have a tote that has all the essentials needed for when the party is over, and consider designating one person to be in charge of making sure that bag ends up in the right place at the end of the night (in the trunk or backseat of your getaway car, in the hotel room, etc.).

WELCOME GUESTS ~ Put together a welcome packet for all of your out-of-town guests—include things like a map (with a list of your favorite local haunts, hikes and watering holes), sunscreen and a small water bottle (exposure at altitude demands more water and lots of sunscreen). Add locally made snacks or goods (issues of Sun Valley Magazine are always full of all kinds of fun stuff to do in the area), dining out suggestions and a full schedule of wedding events. Include a copy of TASTE of Sun Valley Magazine or a list of local eateries to give guests direction on where to dine when not at scheduled wedding events.

TRUST THE EXPERTS ~ Take the time to interview key partners and vendors in the beginning of your planning process, and then trust them to do their job. If you hired a great florist—there are many seasoned professionals in the Sun Valley area—give them highlights, such as your color theme or favorite flowers (or which flowers you definitely don’t want to see in your arrangement) and then let them work their magic. Give your photographer a list of your top “must have” shots or people that must be captured (mother-of-the-bride, first dance, father-ofthe-bride dance, crazy brother’s special speech, etc.) and allow them to do their job. Be sure to explore past work of whomever you hire and don’t be afraid to call references.

A LL THE EXTRAS ~ Consider having wraps and throws on hand at evening events to help guests bundle up against the chill, so they

can enjoy the clear Idaho night skies in warmth and comfort. Or offer a basket of flip flops for serious dancing into the night without the pinch of heeled shoes. Plan to be up late? Provide small flashlights in a bucket on the way out to help guests locate their cars.

B E YOURSELF ~ Do what YOU want on your day. Select the details that are important to you and plan the items you want to experience. If you want to get ready by yourself—do it. Not into the cutting of the cake? Then skip that moment and set up a candy bar or create a tiered cornucopia of tarts as one Sun Valley bride and groom presented to guests. Want to arrive at the reception in a fire truck or on a tandem bicycle to reflect how you first met, then ride up in style! It’s your day. Do exactly what you want, and don’t let anyone make you feel like you have to do anything other than what reflects you as a couple.

D ON’T SWEAT THE SMALL STUFF ~ Very few couples will look back on their wedding and lament the color of the pin that was holding the seating tag to the seating board. Remember to hire experts who match your style and understand your overall vision, and leave the small details to them.

B E FLEXIBLE ~ It can save the day, and what unfolds may surprise you. ï

Planning your day, your way

The sky’s the limit as far as creative ways to make your wedding unique and memorable!

From beer burros and llamas to fire dancers, mermaid performers, and hot air balloons, some couples are pulling out all the stops to make their wedding day distinctive and special.

Get inspired by your own hobbies or shared activities, or create special touches that have signifcance to you and your partner. Here are some ideas to get you started:

START WITH YOUR VENUE

Weddings don’t have to be in hotel ballrooms! How about lakeside? Or a mountain meadow? An art museum, a greenhouse, a garden … the world is yours! Great food, great music, and great drinks are the basic and simple formula for a fun reception, but there are a few little secrets every couple should keep in mind during the planning process.

• Make sure your tables are close to each other and close to the dance floor, that way guests can mingle and chat with friends at different tables and will be more inclined to boogie.

• Speaking of access, keep the bars open and accessible, and if your guests will be seated for speeches and dinner, make sure there is wine, beer, and water on the table.

• If possible, “lower your ceilings visually” to create the illusion of a more intimate setting, especially if your reception is in a tent, ballroom or

barn. Use draping, lighting, and taller décor at your tables to minimize that space.

• Shorten the speeches! This is a tough one, but if at all possible, give your toast makers a five-minute time limit so the guests don’t fall asleep and the party doesn’t lose momentum. Generally, the rehearsal dinner is a better time for longer speeches and fun slide shows, though an oversized family photo display is a great way to add to your reception décor and acknowledge all the loved ones on both sides of the aisle!

DRESS CODES

Overall, this is a good call. Most people (women) want to know what to wear to any event. So be clear about the basics: black tie, formal, cocktail, garden party. Some couples are even taking things a step further and encouraging guests to dress according to their color scheme or theme: mountain casual or bright and tropical, or simply colorful. Other more minimalist couples are suggesting guests wear their best neutrals: whites, blacks and beiges. Again, it’s up to you, but remember, you can count on your wedding party to understand the assignment, but don’t get too upset if that one funny uncle didn’t get the memo!

SEATING CHARTS AND ESCORT CARDS

This display doesn’t have to be a simple chart—use what you love. One couple used antique mirrors for their table assignments; another used

cutting boards! Escort cards (table assignments) can be little party favors as well—a retro bride and groom used mood rings. Other ideas range from shot glasses to matchboxes to cookies.

ALSO ON THE TABLE

Trivia questions about the couple or advice cards for the guests. Fun for all ages—don’t forget the pens!

Give your tables a name instead of a number! One bride used different names for Paradise: Eden, Utopia, Nirvana, Elysium. Other couples use place names that are special to them—the bar where they met, the restaurant where they had their first date, their favorite trail, and their favorite coffee shop!

Place cards can literally be anything—a frosted cookie with the guest's name, a leaf, a river rock, or a mini champagne bottle!

AT THE BAR

Signature cocktails are a playful and easy way to personalize your wedding. These can be fun to name with puns or nicknames and can make it easy on the bartenders as they can mix up big batches. Have an artist friend create a stylized sign to display the drink choices, and keep it simple with just two or three.

RELAX

Create and furnish a “wedding lounge” near the dance floor with throw pillows and comfortable seating so guests can take a break without going back to their tables.

DANCE

Whether you opt for a DJ or live music, make sure you make playlists ahead of time so everyone can dance to your favorite tunes.

Keep in mind that you will most likely be hosting an “all ages” event and everyone from grandparents to new nieces and nephews will be in attendance, so add a few “oldies” to the playlist. The over 60 crowd will appreciate your thoughtfulness.

Choreographed dances? Yes or no? They’re not for everyone but certainly are always a crowd pleaser and a great way to get the party going.

GUEST BOOKS DON’T HAVE TO BE BOOKS

Couples are creating audio guest books with fun “old fashioned phone” recording devices. One couple set up a “Tree of Wishes,” so each guest could add a wish for the couple to the tree!

Provide a stack of postcards for your guests to sign or mount an extralarge photo (or caricature drawing!) of the happy couple and encourage your guests to sign right on the picture!

THE WEDDING CAKE!

Yet another “anything goes” category! Your cake can be traditional, tiered and white, or it can be retro, disco and multi-colored! The maximalist trend is big in cakes right now—over the top and over-piped! Another trend in cakes? Using fruit and fresh botanicals and florals as adornments Always a trend? Flavor first! Bottom line: if it tastes great, it’s a win.

FUN FOOD AND LATE-NIGHT SNACKS

After a few hours of dancing and drinking, there’s nothing like a latenight snack; here are some ideas for fun noshing:

• Hot pretzel cart with mustard and cheese sauce

• Ice cream carts or gelato carts

• Coffee bar

• Burger trucks or pizza by the slice

• Grilled cheese truck with shot glasses of tomato soup. YUM!

PARTY FAVORS

The traditional tulle bag of Jordan Almonds is rarely used these days. Five almonds or five bags were gifted to represent the five wishes for newlyweds: health, wealth, happiness, fertility, and longevity. All good things, but couples are getting creative with their favors these days. Fun monogrammed or personalized options include: honey jars, blankets, matchboxes, dandles, mini-succulents, coffee mugs, wine bottles, frosted cookies, chocolates, soaps, shot glasses, and many more. Always keep practicality and cost in mind. All these trends and ideas are to be used for inspiration—not a recipe for added pressure! Your style and your personality are the driving forces behind wedding planning. aKeep that in mind and your big day will be memorable no matter what! Not everyone feels the need to include their pets and even create custom boutonnieres for the pets! But if that’s a priority for you—then you should absolutely do it. It’s your wedding day! ï

UNDER THE WEDDING BIG TOP HANNAH & SAGEN

Hailey local Hannah McNees was nine months pregnant, in a drift boat below the Clayton bar, with a fish on her line, when Sagen Howard proposed! She lost the fish; he almost lost the ring, but she said yes and a year later they were married beneath a spectacular covering of canvas tipis and disco balls at Sister’s Grove in Bellevue. The five huge tipis were installed by Hannah’s own outdoor experience studio: Alcove Rentals and Pine & Dew, creating a space that was at once intimate and comfortable yet also sweeping and majestic. Their ceremony was a

true joining and blending of families—Sagen had his parents at his side and the couple’s son Knox in his arms, and Hannah’s procession down the aisle included both of her parents and all four of her siblings.

Hannah is a New Jersey native, and her family has Italian roots, so the wedding feast was a family style meal beginning with focaccia but including some solid meat and potatoes for Sagan’s side of the family—Idahoans through and through.

The couple’s weekend-long celebration, beginning with a welcome party at 7 Fuego

at the Gannett Country Club, was entirely centered in “South County,” switching things up from a typical “Sun Valley wedding” experience. The couple had (and has) a personal relationship with every vendor that worked on their special day, and each one was an integral part of creating this magical collaboration and celebration.

Friends and family were also deeply involved in making the festivities feel deeply personal. Their officiant was a dear friend of the couple’s, and Hannah’s three brothers DJ’d the entire dance party. Because they

were on a potato seed farm in Bellevue, they asked their guests to plan their attire from “the cowboy boots up” giving the party an understated feeling that matched seamlessly with the natural and neutral earth tones and foliage decorating the tent space.

Hannah and Sagan are both Wood River High School grads, and Hannah has successfully helmed both Jersey Girl and The Red Shoe restaurants in Hailey which is how the couple met. Sagan and the rest of the Idaho Power Line crew would lunch or spend happy hour at Hannah’s spots! As she puts it, “After

a few years, lots of beer and sandwiches, ‘the same places at the same time’ became ‘the right places at the right time.’”

And they (and the rest of their crew) know how to throw a party—from their first dance to Tyler Childers’ “All Your’n” to the custom boutonnieres created by Brenna at Floret Design Studio, which were made with pheasant feathers and 410 shotgun shells, every detail was perfect and just right for this couple and their vast village of family and friends. ï

XANADU IN WARM SPRINGS

KELSEY & SAM

Beyond the immediate chemistry on their first date, Kelsey Bunce, a somatic movement therapist, and Sam Wyman, a software engineer, found that they both share a love of magic, fantasy and the outdoors. So, when it was time to plan their wedding, they let those inspirations lead them to a “Midsummer Night’s Dream” of mythological lands and vivid colors for a wild and free celebration of their love.

The romantic weekend began at Apple’s— Kelsey’s old stomping grounds from her team snowboarding days. The air resonated with heartfelt speeches and toasts from family and

friends carried away by the couple’s energy and infectious love. For the main event at Kelsey’s family home in Warm Springs, the wedding party and the guests were encouraged to wear their brightest colors— an assignment they nailed in high style, and were seated at tables bearing names like Avalon, Xanadu and Nirvana.

Music and dancing were at the heart of this enchanted party—with SoulCirque transforming the dance floor into a true experience and Kelsey’s childhood friend Jens Peterson handling DJ duties and late-night song requests. The couple spent quality time

curating their playlists and danced their first dance to “Nothing Else Matters” (covered by Miley Cyrus, Elton John, and Yo-Yo Ma.)

Kelsey walked down the aisle to “Forever” by Labrinth, and Sam’s dad (a Stanford alum) used “Alright Now” by Free (Stanford’s de facto fight song) to introduce himself as he made his way to the microphone for his toast. Not one to ignore gut feelings or instincts, Kelsey ultimately chose the first dress she had seen at Julietta Bridal. The Andrea Sedici gown was simple but transcendent and paired beautifully with custom cowboy boots gifted by her aunt.

Kelsey and Sam made sure every detail— from tie-dyed robes for the bridesmaids to mini bottles of Patron at each place setting to an officiant who has known Caroline since she was a little girl—heightened the celebration and reflected their deep love and affection for each other and their guests.

The newlyweds have recently relocated to San Francisco where they are busy planning their postponed honeymoon to a rustic and rain forested island with plenty of good hiking and sailing. ï

BUTTERCUPS ON THE BIG LOST RIVER

SARAH & STOD

In 1970, Sarah Mullins’ great grandfather purchased some land on the East Fork of the Big Lost River, and his family has been gathering and celebrating milestones on that beautiful property ever since. Sarah and her husband Stod Rowley never even considered another venue even though the dirt roads leading to

the remote venue weren’t easy to navigate and logistics were tricky. Tying the knot on family land with Stod’s father as the officiant made the event deeply meaningful for the couple and their 135 guests.

Sarah, an RN at St. Luke’s Wood River Medical Center, and Stod, general manager at Silver Creek Outfitters, met at a Wood River

Land Trust event and got engaged on a favorite hike in the Valley. Sarah and Stod welcomed guests with a party at Apple’s and then spent the rest of the wedding weekend at the Wild Horse Creek Ranch where many of the guests stayed (some camping!) making the celebration feel like a real family party, complete with a cowboy style breakfast the next morning.

Everything about Sarah and Stod’s wedding celebrated the natural beauty of the valley. Buttercup Farms used local flowers and even made floral collars for the couple’s golden retrievers. Danielle Anspach used matching flowers in Sarah’s hair. Sarah’s bridesmaids got to choose their own dresses based on the blue and tan color scheme and wore coordinating Tecovas Western Boots. The reception was an intimate and laid-back affair with a fabulous buffet from Horsewood Catering and giant ice cream sandwiches instead of traditional wedding cake, which had every guest raving! And the combination of live music—The Pisten Bullys—and the DJ, Joey Sides, kept the party rocking until 2 a.m!

Ali at the Feathered Flip, Tara at Tara Bella Flowers and Jessie at the Sun Valley Resort were all part of bringing Caroline and Jack’s vision to life and were able to keep things stress free and low key for the wedding party.

Music was an important piece of the big day and Alexa Sluder from Pocatello worked closely with Jack and Caroline to capture their energy and mood and the feeling of the day.

Alexa performed “Love is a Verb” by John Mayer as the wedding party entered, “Angela” by the Lumineers when Caroline walked down the aisle, and “Real Love Baby” by Father John Misty for the couple’s first dance.

Alexa’s husband, Dan, was the party’s MC who took over DJ duties when the party migrated to the final venue—an afterparty at the Warfield Distillery & Brewery in Ketchum. ï

dresses in varying shades of springtime greens were a perfect complement to the surrounding foliage and their colorful bouquets.

Though they wanted to honor many of the classic wedding traditions, the couple’s highest priority was creating a weekend that felt like “them,” in other words, warm, fun, high energy; and, most importantly, surrounded by the people they love the most.

The event was black tie and a seated dinner, but it was important to the couple that the party was fun and welcoming and not overly stiff or serious, so they knew that their choice of music was going to be a key component to the overall tone of the evening. And their band—The Dance Doctors—did not disappoint! The dance floor was packed all night and the energy coming from the stage absolutely made the reception. ï

GRACE & KYLE

Just three weeks after meeting on the dating app Hinge and sharing a first date of ice cream and laughter, Grace Hibshman, a scientist from Miami, and Kyle Mosely, a Texan start-up entrepreneur in the AI insurance space flew together to Costa Rica and fell in love. Eight months later, after Grace recovered from a terrifying illness that led to sepsis and a hospitalization in Scotland

where she had flown on her own for a scientific conference—the couple was engaged at Kvalvika Beach in Lofoten, Norway where the mountains and cliffs of the archipelago seem to rise straight out of the Arctic Ocean.

Even though both the bride and groom’s families are scattered across the country, gathering in Sun Valley seemed to be written in the stars as Grace had attended an outdoor

leadership school in Idaho when she was only 14 and Kyle has family from Jerome and a cabin in Stanley. Both Grace and Kyle love the outdoors, especially high alpine places like the Sawtooth Mountains, so their wedding theme was very much rooted in nature and wildflowers and whimsy, which was reflected in their pastel color palette. Dark magenta foxglove, light pink ranunculus, bright green Queen Anne’s lace, and pale yellow feverfew were the colors and flowers in Grace’s bouquet and the bridesmaids dresses, as well as in the flower arch and the flower bar where guests found a bud vase with their name and table number.

The wedding was mostly traditional, though the couple chose the New Zealand form of the marriage liturgy after traveling there together and connecting deeply with the nature inspired spirituality. Grace also did much of the signage herself, including their banner proclaiming: “When you Know You Know.”

Grace walked down the aisle to “Can’t Help Falling in Love” by Elvis Presley and then danced their first dance to “Margaret” by Lana Del Ray, which was very much their song. DJ Bearskin Rug kept the party going all night long. Studio 11 created a cigar lounge where guests enjoyed Cuban cigars as a nod to Grace’s

family’s origins in Little Havana and Calle Ocho in Miami.

The couple’s cake was a reflection of their love of fresh fruit and honey made by the pastry team at Sun Valley’s Konditorei. The cake itself was over 5 feet long and covered in honey, fruit and flowers. They cut the cake with a replica “Lord of the Rings” sword (a favorite of Kyle’s family.)

The couple honeymooned throughout Italy and France and are now settled in Berkeley, California, where Grace is a postdoctoral fellow at the university. ï

SOUTHERN CHARM IN THE VALLEY

HARPER & CURT

Harper Morrison and Curt Plaskett came all the way from Fairhope, Alabama, to celebrate their wedding weekend in Sun Valley, and they brought 73 family members and friends across the country with them. Harper, a nurse anesthetist, and Curt who works for Beretta, met at Pirates Cove—a beach bar on the Gulf Coast of Alabama. Harper met Curt’s

identical twin brother first; he was already married, so luckily there was another one! They were engaged at Harper’s family farm— both in camouflage after a bow hunt in the woods. Curt dropped to one knee, popped the question, and they celebrated with family and friends afterward.

Fast forward to a destination wedding in Sun Valley where guests were greeted with

welcome bags carrying all the necessities for the weekend—cheese straws, ChapStick, matches, cards and Bigwood Bread Cookies— and a party at Whiskey’s on Main. Next was a Friday morning hike in Adam’s Gulch to get the party started, followed by a Wrapcity lunch, beer and mimosas. The main event began with a lovely ceremony at St. Thomas Episcopal Church after which they rang the

church bell and took a group photo with the entire group. The reception took place at a friend’s home in the valley whose party barn made for the picture-perfect venue and rustic backdrop for the blue linens and pink-, whiteand peach-colored flowers.

The groom was dressed in black tie formal with a white dinner jacket and a custom feather bowtie from Brackish, and Harper’s fabulously convertible Reem Acra dress went from fully sleeved and covered for church, to long sleeves and exposed neckline, to strapless for the epic dance party to the Motown tunes played by the live band ISING all the way from Mobile, Alabama!

The couple made sure to include all the elements of a traditional celebration: cake cutting, father-daughter dance, bouquet toss, and garter toss. They danced their first dance together to “It Must Be Love” by Don Williams. After the delicious buffet and cake from Salted Sprig, the party ended the night with Chrissy’s—a popular vanilla ice cream drink with Frangelico and vodka, which originated in Mobile. Harper wore her grandmother’s 1960 wedding dress, which she’d had altered and cut off for their grand exit! The couple honeymooned at Hermitage Bay on Antigua. ï

FORMAL FUNK AND FLOWERS BRENNA & JUSTIN

Brenna Cavanaugh, owner of Floret Design Studio, and Justin Latimer, an event producer, met at the Lost River Disco Music Festival and have carried that dance theme right up through their Formal Funk Wedding—a riot of chartreuse, cobalt and lavender with family and friends clad in their fanciest, funkiest duds amidst the gorgeous blooms of Floret Design right in Brenna’s mother’s own backyard. (The only guests not wearing their disco finest were Brenna’s father and brother who wore their Scottish kilts as a nod to their family heritage—though one could argue that kilts are inherently pretty funky.)

Brenna and Justin were even able to “complete

the circle” by having a Friday wedding and then a campout party the following day and night at Idaho Basecamp where the fortuitous Disco Festival had been held!

Brenna and Justin’s celebration was very “non-traditional” and because they both work in the industry, all the vendors were also their friends making the festivities extra special. And no, Brenna did not have to do floral arrangement and set up at her own wedding! Her amazing team and event florists from Bloom Theory came to help and executed her design and choices beautifully.

She did however do virtually everything else herself—including the invitations!

Brenna’s elegant Katherine Tash gown suited her perfectly, and Justin’s tux with teal accents struck the exact right note of formal and flash as they danced their first dance to an acoustic version of Whitney Houston’s signature anthem “I Wanna Dance with Somebody” sung by good friend, Casey Sedlack.

One hundred and fifty guests enjoyed a buffet dinner from Horsewood Catering with an Idaho Station, an Asian Station and latenight McDonald’s—tasty grub after grooving the August night away with DJ’s Jens Peterson & Joey Sides. ï

TWILIGHT WOODLAND ROMANCE KRISTEN & GRANT

Kristen Stenehjem and Grant Edland, both Chicago physicians, met their first year of medical school “locking eyes across the cadaver table,” as Grant likes joke. Study groups started a friendship, which turned into romance leading to an otherworldly proposal surrounded by the ancient trees, fog and mist of the Fanal Forest on Madeira, Portugal.

The couple called back this mystical and ethereal feeling as they planned their fall wedding in their own private corner of the Idaho woods. They began the weekend with an intimate rehearsal dinner followed by a welcome party at River Run Lodge featuring

their favorite signature drink—the French 75. Friends and family toasted the couple as a thunderstorm raged outside and lightning lit up the floor to ceiling windows of the lodge.

Bucking tradition slightly, Kristen and Grant chose to have their first look prior to their vows, so guests were guided along a lanternlined path through the forest to where the couple hosted a pre-ceremony gathering in the apple orchard adjacent to the ceremony space. The orchard was decorated with Kristen’s grandmother’s vintage silver pieces—giving the gathering a romantic nostalgic feeling.

Then the pastor who had married all three of Kristen’s siblings, joined Kristen and Grant

as well among the fall trees, huge blossoming hydrangeas and the jewel-toned bouquets held by Kristen and her bridesmaids.

The couple was inspired by their shared Nordic heritage, Scandinavian folk art, and forest inspired mythology. They used those motifs and symbolism on their save-thedates and invitations as well as their custom welcome gifts for each guest, which included chocolates, matchbooks, candles, and hats. And instead of a traditional wedding cake, they served krumkake (a delicate, crisp Norwegian waffle cookie) as a nod to their roots.
