There’s a special kind of energy in Broward when summer rolls around. Maybe it’s the golden sunsets over the coast, the sound of flip-flops hitting the pavement, or just the way the air feels lighter when school’s out and the days stretch longer. Whatever it is, it’s the perfect time to grab your friends, your sunscreen, and surprise your BCT pass!

This summer, a group of five friends made a simple decision that changed the way they explored their county: they tried the bus.

At first, it was about saving money. With gas prices high and rideshares adding up, they looked for a better way to get around. What they didn’t expect was that Broward County Transit

would become part of the adventure. With just $2 for a one-way fare or affordable all-day passes, hopping on board gave them the freedom to roam without worrying about parking, traffic, or draining their wallets.

One morning, they caught Route 11 headed east and rode it all the way to Fort Lauderdale Beach. Windows down, music in their ears, and laughter in the air, they were tourists in their own city. They grabbed iced coffees along Las Olas, laid out their towels under a shady palm, and watched the waves roll in. Later, they checked the real-time app, found the next bus, and decided to ride up to the Galleria Mall for an impromptu shopping stop.

It wasn’t just a ride; it was an experience. The buses were clean and air-conditioned, the

Sunset photo ops. And BCT was with them every step of the way.

So, if you’ve never tried riding with BCT before, consider this your invitation: Just Try It. Let us show you that public transit isn’t just about getting from Point A to Point B; it’s about discovering what’s in between.

Back to School, Back Online

The National Center For Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) New Animated Video Helps Kids Outsmart Fake Images

The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) is sounding the alarm this back-to-school season on one of the fastest-growing online threats facing kids today: the misuse of generative artificial intelligence (GAI). As children head back to school and spend more time online for homework, socializing, and gaming, these new and evolving risks are becoming harder to ignore.

In 2024, NCMEC saw a 1,325% increase in CyberTipline reports involving GAI. These included peer-to-peer misuse, where children used “nudify” apps and other tools to create and share explicit images of classmates, as well as sextortion cases, where offenders use GAIgenerated images to blackmail children for more content, sexual activity, or money.

To help families navigate this new reality, NCMEC has released a brand-new episode of its flagship online safety animated series, “Into the Cloud.” Titled “That’s Not Me!,” the episode follows characters Clicky and Nettie as they discover someone is using AI tools to create fake images of people. With the help of their friends, they work to stop GAI misuse and teach young viewers what to do if they encounter something concerning online.

The participation fee for qualifying families will be $15 per child, per year. For more information, please visit: https:// bgcbc.org/mods-partnership.

NCMEC’s “Into the Cloud” presents important safety information in an ageappropriate and entertaining way. Season 3, designed for children ages 10 and 11, focuses on preventing online enticement, sextortion and GAI victimization, as well as providing resources to report and access to support.

“Back-to-school is the perfect time to have conversations about potential dangers online,” said Stacy Garrett, Vice President of NCMEC’s content and community engagement division. “The more we talk to our kids about what they’re seeing and experiencing online, the better equipped they’ll be to handle it, including knowing they can come to us when some-

thing feels wrong.”

Back to school is a fresh start, and a chance to set healthy digital habits that last all year. By taking the time now to talk with kids about potential dangers online, including how AI can be misused, parents and caregivers can help them recognize red flags, know where to turn and feel confident about reporting concerns.

NCMEC has created free tipsheets for parents, caregivers, and educators to help start those conversations with children of all ages. Here are three easy ways to get started: Educate yourself about how GAI can be misused and talk to your kids about the risks.

Ask your child to show you how they use AI tools and what they know about them. Reassure them they can come to you if something makes them feel uncomfortable—no matter what.

A Meeting Of The Migraine Minds

Top U.S. Migraine Specialist To Present New Treatments At International Headache Congress In Brazil In September

Climate change, hormonal shifts, and increased screen times know no geographical boundaries and unfortunately, are a few of the most prevalent triggers that have been causing a rise in migraine incidences around the world. In fact, according to the National Institute of Health, in 2025, 3.1 billion people worldwide are estimated to be living with migraine, and it is the #1 cause of disability for women ages 18-50. To reverse this trend, top medical experts in the headache field will gather next month to share knowledge and learn about the latest advances in migraine diagnosis and treatment at the International Headache Congress (IHC) in Sao Paolo, Brazil from Wednesday, September 10th - Sunday, September 14th, 2025. One of those renowned colleagues is Dr. Fred Cohen, Founder of Headache Intervention, PLLC, a migraine specialty practice in New York and Florida, and Assistant Professor of Medicine and Neurology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York, who will be presenting a lecture on acute migraine treatments and will also chair and moderate sessions on the latest clinical developments in headache medicine.

“As a lifelong sufferer of chronic headaches, I understand the pain and frustration of what migraine patients experience on a daily basis,” said Dr. Cohen. “Finding relief by seeking a highly skilled headache specialist is what transformed my life back then and what inspires me to do this type of work today. Knowledge is power and this international conference will offer hope to billions of people as many new interventions will be discussed that can be used to alleviate their headache burden as well.”

Specifically, Dr. Cohen’s seminar will focus on the mechanism of action of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in treating migraines by discussing common over-the-counter options for headaches, such as ibuprofen, naproxen, and aspirin, as well as prescription NSAIDs including diclofenac and ketoro-

lac. His presentation will also highlight Symbravo, a newly approved combination therapy that pairs the triptan rizatriptan with the NSAID meloxicam.

Besides Dr. Cohen’s presentation, other innovative topics to be discussed at the upcoming IHC include:

• Exploring the role of Pituitary Adenylate Cyclase-Activating Polypeptide (PACAP) during the migraine attack cycle

• AI in the fight against migraine

• Gender differences in response to acute and preventive treatment of migraine

• Cluster headache and insights for the role of anti-CGRPs in acute and prophylactic treatment

• Migraine in pregnancy and lactation

• Migraine effect on cognitive functions

“Migraine research is advancing rap idly, with many fascinating new therapies emerging,” adds Dr. Cohen. “Just as eve ryone’s headache triggers are unique, so too are their treatment choices. No one should have to suffer in debilitating pain anymore.”

For 22 years, the IHC has attracted top neurologists, scientists and health professionals in related fields from around the world. This year’s conference entitled: “Headache Care for All: Embracing the Challenge,” reflects the organization’s commitment to improving the lives of all who live with headache from the most fortunate to the most underserved communities, by expanding their access to trained healthcare professionals.

Similarly, Dr. Cohen has also recently expanded his medical reach in helping headache and migraine patients by opening three independent offices in Queens, New York, Brooklyn, New York and Jacksonville, Florida under the newly created private practice Headache Intervention, PLLC. The practice offers personalized care, same day, evening,

for the treatment of all types of headaches and facial pain, including migraine, chronic migraine, tension headaches, TMJ disorders, cluster headaches, trigeminal neuralgia and many others.

“At Headache Intervention, I can provide care without the constraints imposed by insurance companies and large hospital systems,” said Dr. Cohen. “This independence allows me to offer treatments round the clock and to manage the prior authorizations and peer-to-peer evaluations myself, streamlining a process that in larger institutions is often delayed by multiple departments. As a result, I feel more confident, effective, and fulfilled in providing the focused, timely, and compassionate headache care that my patients deserve.”

It’s PAW Patrol: Adventure Play To The Rescue

Learn To Collaborate And Save The Day With The Heroic PAW-Some Pups

Children and families can now play and save the day with the heroic PAW Patrol pups at the brand-new PAW Patrol: Adventure Play traveling exhibit presented by Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital and sponsored by Florida Prepaid College Savings Plan and Chewy VetCare, open ing Friday, September 12th at the Museum of Discovery and Science (MODS). Based on the hit preschool series PAW Patrol, produced by Spin Master Entertainment, airing on Nickelodeon and streaming on Paramount+, this interactive exhibit gives kids and their grown-ups an opportunity to run rescue missions and work together to overcome challenges in a fun and immersive environment. The exhibit runs through Sunday, January 11th, 2026.

“At MODS, we’re always looking for innovative ways to ignite curiosity and learning through play,” said Joseph P. Cox, President and CEO of the Museum of Discovery and Science. “PAW Patrol: Adventure Play is a joyful, hands-on expe rience that empowers our youngest learn ers to develop problem-solving and team work skills while connecting imaginative rescue missions to the real-life heroes in their communities.”

Through the exhibit, families will visit Adventure Bay and meet the PAW Patrol, a pack of rescue pups - each inspired by a real-world job like a police officer (Chase), a firefighter (Marshall), a con struction worker (Rubble), a fearless pilot (Skye) and more. Just as the heroic pups, who believe “no job is too big, no pup is too small,” work together to protect their community in the show, families will work together to save the day with a can-do attitude. In the process, kids can learn about different jobs within a community and how those real-life professionals coordinate to keep people safe and happy.

“Play has the power to heal, inspire and teach,” said Caitlin Stella, CEO of Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. “That’s why we’re proud to present PAW Patrol: Adventure Play at MODS. Experiences like this create moments of joy and learning that benefit a child’s emotional and social development - whether in a hospital room or at a museum. We’re committed to sup porting healthy, happy childhoods in every way we can.”

Each of the PAW Patrol pups has spe cial skills, gadgets and vehicles to help them on their rescue missions. In the exhibit, families are invited to pop on a pup pack containing their own imaginary tools and check out the lay of the land from the lookout tower. They can head to Jake’s Mountain and scope things out near the snowy slide to see if anyone is in trouble. They can also board the PAW Patroller, push buttons, and drive it up the mountain to help Rubble and Everest res cue a snowboarder stuck in the snow. Those with a taste for foodie adventures can whip up tasty treats in Porter’s Café and help Adventure Bay win the Tallest Cake Competition by stacking cake layers as high as they can. Families can also cruise Adventure Bay aboard the Sea Patroller, steering it to rescue baby seagulls and turtles.

“A strong future begins with early inspiration,” said Kevin Thompson, Executive Director of Florida Prepaid College Savings Plan. “This exhibit allows children to explore the world around them and start thinking about the many roles they can play in it. Whether they dream of being firefighters, scientists or community helpers, PAW Patrol: Adventure Play sparks the kind of curiosity that drives lifelong learning - and that’s a mission we’re proud to champion, and to support families in saving for.”

The hands-on, immersive PAW Patrol: Adventure Play exhibit is a fun way for the whole family to learn about bravery and heroism. The whole family will learn how to combine their skills to problem-solve together and save the day.

Celebrate Real-Life Heroes!

On select days and times from SeptemberDecember, families will have the opportunity to meet the brave individuals - both human and furry - who help keep our communities safe and healthy. Activities will include: Meet & Greet: Connect with local police officers, firefighters, pilots, first responders and more.

Wanna Be Weekends in October and November: No Job Too Big! MODS will extend the PAW Patrol:

Adventure Play experience with Wanna Be Weekends, taking place every Saturday and Sunday in October and November. These themed weekends feature engaging, hands-on activities highlighting reallife community heroes and STEAM-based careers. From designing rescue vehicles and building homes to meeting local police officers, firefighters, first responders and even learning how to be a pilot, families will discover how teamwork, compassion and problem-solving shape the world around us. Thanks to support from the JetBlue Foundation, young aviators will have the chance to explore flight science and aviation careers through special programming and guest speakers.

On select days, Chewy VetCare will also host an interactive Vet Clinic, where children can step into the role of animal caretakers by practicing empathy and learning how to care for pets and other animals in need.

Each weekend brings new partners, fresh adventures and opportunities for children to imagine how they can make a difference just like the heroic pups of Adventure Bay.

PAW Patrol: Adventure Play was produced by The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis in partnership with Nickelodeon and Paramount LocationBased Entertainment & Experiences. The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis is a nonprofit committed to creating extraordinary family learning experiences across the arts, sciences, and humanities that have the power to transform the lives of children and families.

“The big takeaway for children and their grownups is that every team member’s skills are valued and serve an important purpose to help the whole team accomplish important goals,” said Dr. Jennifer Pace Robinson, president and CEO of the museum that produced the exhibit, The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis. “We want little ones to learn about citizenship, helpfulness and solving problems with the assistance of these res-

cue pups, who team up to help their neighbors who are in trouble.”

world’s loneliest (and wittiest) single woman, Carlo, as she crashes her exgirlfriend’s wedding to a man. Through a series of flirtations, conversations, and collisions with past lovers, old enemies, new friends and perfect strangers, Carlo strives to understand whether or not heartbreak is a permanent human condition.

New York Theatre Guide called At the Wedding “Bitterly funny... wisecracking and wisdom-sharing about the unbreakable bond between love and pain... there’s a fun time to be had at this wedding.” The New York Times shared, “Fresh and trenchant... The lines are funny; Turner has a boxer’s sense of the twopunch rhythm of jokes... Authorial patience is part of what makes At the Wedding so fresh; though there are plenty of one-liners, it is not a yuk-yuk comedy foisting its laughs at you or over-signaling its intentions... Also revivifying is the way Turner reshapes the wedding genre for our time, inviting new characters to the party.” Island City Stage’s premiere production of At the Wedding is directed by Rogow. An ensemble production, the show stars Hannah Benitez (Carlo), Sandi Stock (Leigh), Hannah Hayley (Carly), Timothy Mark Davis (Eli), Sheena O. Murray (Eva), Elizabeth Price (Maria) and Steven Guez (Victor).

At the Wedding’s Co-producers are Sue Wilder & Russell Vance, Lights and Sound Sponsor is Scott Bennett, Set Sponsors are Trevor & Margie Fried and Talent Sponsor is the DC Allen & Ken Flick No Gay Hate Fund at Our Fund Foundation. Additional funding is provided by the following: The Our Fund Foundation, The Schubert Foundation Inc., the SHS Foundation, The Maval Foundation, the Warten Foundation, OutClique and the Broward County Board of County Commissioners as recommended by the Broward Cultural Council.

Burning The Flag Or Torching The Constitution: Only One Destroys Freedom

Cancel culture—political correctness amped up on steroids, the selfrighteousness of a narcissistic age, and a mass-marketed pseudo-morality that is little more than fascism disguised as tolerance—has shifted us into an Age of Intolerance.

Nothing illustrates this more clearly than President Trump’s latest executive order calling for criminal charges for any one who burns the American flag— a symbolic act long upheld by the Supreme Court as protected political expression.

This push is not about patriotism—it is political theater.

For an administration under fire—from the Epstein cover-up to tanking approval ratings and mounting constitutional crises— flag burning serves as symbolic outrage staged as political cover, a culture-war diversion to distract from more serious abuses of power.

Consider the timing: on the very same day Trump announced penalties for flag burning, he also signed an executive order establishing “specialized” National Guard units to patrol American cities under the guise of addressing crime.

This is the real bait-and-switch: cloak military policing in patriotic theater and hope no one notices the deeper constitutional violations taking root.

In other words, Trump’s flag fight is a decoy.

Yet in today’s climate, where mobs on the left and censors on the right compete to silence speech they dislike, even this form of protest is under fire.

In 1989, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 5-4 in Texas v. Johnson that burning the flag of the United States in protest is an act of protected free speech under the First Amendment.

Today, that ruling matters more than ever, yet there is an important distinction: the First Amendment protects the right to burn your own flag as political expression but not to vandalize public property in the process. That distinction matters: the Constitution protects dissent, not destruction.

And it’s exactly that distinction—between lawful protest and punished expression—that makes the flag-burning debate so important.

formed for expressing views outside the mainstream, the message is the same: toe the line or be punished.

This new Age of Intolerance is not limited to the cultural left.

President Trump has been waging his own right-wing brand of cancel culture: sanitizing museums, scrubbing exhibits of “unpatriotic” narratives, renaming anything that doesn’t fit his preferred version

sion, it distracts Americans from the machinery of control being built in real time. The fight over flags and museums is not just about culture—it is the smokescreen for expanding surveillance, militarization, and police-state powers.

That is why the sudden outrage over disrespect for the country’s patriotic symbols rings so hollow. In a culture where the flag is already plastered on bikinis,

mantle our constitutional republic and shift the country into a police state. The irony is this: it’s not anti-American to be anti-war or anti-police misconduct or anti-racial discrimination—but it is antiAmerican to be anti-freedom.

What we are witnessing, in the flagburning debate and far beyond, is a culture war in which political tribes police thought, speech, and even symbolic protest. Those who refuse to conform— whether they burn a flag, take a knee, question authority, or simply refuse to parrot the official line— are demonized, deplatformed, and sometimes even criminalized.

Although the courts have held that symbolic acts of protest deserve the highest protection, the culture wars have turned those protections into battlegrounds. For decades, mobs, politicians, and bureaucrats alike have worked to silence unpopular or politically incorrect opinions.

Whether it’s a student disciplined for refusing to recite the Pledge, an athlete demonized for kneeling during the National Anthem, or a dissenter deplat-

What the left enforces with trigger warnings and deplatforming, Trump enforces with prosecutions, cultural rebranding and militarization.

They are snowflakes of a different political persuasion, but the result is the same: dissent is silenced, history is rewritten, and only the approved narrative remains.

And here’s the danger: when symbolic outrage is used as a political smokescreen for militarization and constitutional ero-

At the Humane Society of Broward County, two very different but equally lovable animals are waiting patiently for their second chance. One is a quirky, shepherd-looking pup with a heart full of loyalty. The other, a spunky little tuxedo kitten with a playful streak. While they may come from different backgrounds and have their own unique personalities, Sadie and Bubbles share one important thing in common: both are ready to fill a forever home with joy, fun, and unconditional love.

Sadie: The Short-Legged Sweetheart

Sadie may not fit neatly into any one breed category - she resembles a shepherd, but her short legs add a unique twist. What she may lack in pedigree, she more than makes up for in personality. At three years old, Sadie has already worn a few hats in life, including that of a loving mama dog. She arrived at the shelter after being transferred from another facility, and while her past remains a bit of a mystery, her future is looking bright and her heart is

The upshot of all this editing, parsing, banning and silencing is the emergence of a new language, what George Orwell referred to as Newspeak, which places the power to control language in the hands of the totalitarian state. Under such a system, language becomes a weapon to change the way people think by changing the words they use.

And while Orwell imagined it as dystopian fiction, we are living its early chapters now.

The First Amendment is being whittled down not just by government decree but by a culture that rewards conformity and punishes divergence.

In such an environment, burning a flag is not the real danger. The real danger is a society that no longer tolerates free thought at all.

The Framers of the Constitution knew very well that whenever and wherever democratic governments had failed, it was because the people had abdicated their responsibility as guardians of freedom. They also knew that whenever in history the people denied this responsibility, an authoritarian regime arose which eventually denied the people the right to govern themselves. Citizens must be willing to stand and fight to protect their freedoms. And if need be, it will entail criticizing the government.

This is true patriotism in action.

Love of country will sometimes entail carrying a picket sign or going to jail or taking a knee or burning a flag, if necessary, to challenge injustice.

As I make clear in my book Battlefield America: The War on the American People and in its fictional counterpart The Erik Blair Diaries, the real danger isn’t someone burning the flag.

this crackdown. It’s control.

Worse, it divides the nation and distracts us from the steady rise of the police state.

Let’s not confuse patriotism (love for or devotion to one’s country) with blind obedience to the government’s dictates. That is the first step towards creating an authoritarian regime.

There is nothing patriotic about the lengths to which Americans have allowed the government to go in its efforts to dis-

The greatest danger we face is the U.S. government torching the Constitution.

And Bubbles Are Ready For Their Next Chapter

full of love. For a brief time, Sadie found herself in a home with an older gentleman who was charmed by her gentle spirit and eager to give her a chance. Although it turned out that Sadie’s energy level and playful nature were a little more than he had expected, their time together revealed a lot about what makes this dog so special. She’s house-trained, sleeps peacefully through the night, and adores her morning and evening walks. Her love of toys, intelligence, and affectionate nature make her a joy to be around. Sadie also gets along well with other dogs and thrives in a loving, active environment. What she needs now is a family who’s ready to embrace her lively spirit—one that will take her on daily adventures, toss around her favorite toys, and provide the affection she so willingly gives. Whether it’s hiking trails or cozying up for a movie night, Sadie is the kind of dog who will be by your side through it all.

Bubbles: A Kitten with Big Personality

Then there’s Bubbles, a four-month-old

tuxedo kitten with energy to spare and a lot of love to give. When Bubbles first arrived at the shelter, he wasn’t in the best condition. A rough start and skin issues left him in need of some serious TLC, but thanks to the dedicated care of the Humane Society’s clinic staff, Bubbles is now healthy, thriving, and more adorable than ever.

His black and white fur gives him the appearance of a well-dressed gentleman, but don’t let the tuxedo fool you— Bubbles is all about fun.

He’s curious, playful, and endlessly entertaining. He’s also the last of his litter to be adopted, having watched his brothers and sisters find their forever homes one by one.

Kittens like Bubbles do best when they have a playmate, which is why adopting two kittens can be a great option. Whether you already have a cat at home or are open to welcoming another kitten alongside Bubbles, he’s sure to bring joy, laughter, and lots of antics to your household.

How to Adopt

Both Sadie and Bubbles are available for adoption at the Humane Society of Broward County, located at 2070 Griffin Road, Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33312. If either of these sweethearts has captured your heart—or if you’re simply looking to add a new furry friend to your family—the first step is to complete a pre-adoption application online at: https:// www.humanebroward.com

The shelter’s adoption kennels are open daily starting at 11:00 a.m., giving you ample opportunity to meet Sadie, Bubbles, and many other pets hoping for a home. For questions, you can call: (954) 989-3977 and speak with a knowledgeable staff member. Whether you’re a dog lover seeking a loyal companion or a cat enthusiast looking for a playful sidekick, Sadie and Bubbles are shining examples of the love and companionship that shelter pets have to offer.

Their next chapter is just waiting to be written - could it start with you?

The Curtain Rises On Upstage Productions

The New Theatre Company To Present Ira Levin’s Deathtrap At Empire Stage In October

Janice Hamilton – Actress, Singer, Auctioneer, and Business Woman, will add Producer to her resume when Upstage Productions – her brand-new theatre company - debuts with Ira Levin’s Deathtrap at Empire Stage this fall. The show will run from Friday, October 10th through Sunday, November 2nd at the popular Fort Lauderdale venue.

Ira Levin’s (Rosemary’s Baby) Deathtrap is an ingeniously constructed play that offers a rare and skillful blend of gasp-producing thrills and raucous laughter. It provides twists and turns and sudden shocks in abundance as it follows the machinations of Sidney Bruhl, a writer of thrillers, whose recent offerings have been flops, and who is prepared to go to any lengths and use any devious means to improve his fortunes.

Janice Hamilton, through her company Hamilton Fundraising Auctions, has raised millions of dollars for hundreds of Not-ForProfit Organizations and causes over the past thirty years. She also has an impressive film, television, and theatrical resume and has been featured in numerous productions throughout South Florida. Some of her credits include City of Angels and Crazy for You (Jupiter Theatre); RX and Gingerbread Lady (Boca Stage); The Savannah Sipping Society, Morning After Grace, The Long Weekend (Pigs Do Fly Productions), Don’t Dress for Dinner (Caldwell Theatre); Hotel on Marvin Gardens (Actor’s Playhouse); Mystery of Love & Sex (Primal Forces); Anton in Show Business (Red Barn Theatre); Dames at Sea (Shores Performing Arts); and Menopause, the Musical (G-Four Productions). She toured the US in the award-winning comedy Viagra Falls opposite Harold Gould and appeared OffBroadway in The Dutchman and Be Happy For Me. Her television and film

credits include As the World Turns, Miami Sands, Boynton Beach Club, Lost Everything, Life’s a Drag, and Just My Type, and the Hallmark film A Royal Makeover, which was recently released on Amazon Prime.

“I chose Deathtrap as our opening production because I adore the murdermystery genre and thought the timing was perfect in conjunction with Halloween,” Hamilton says. “Plus, Deathtrap is a comedy and pure escapism, something I believe we all need in the present social climate.” Deathtrap will be directed by

Hamilton’s long-time collaborator DK Kondelik, who has also agreed to act as prop master and set dresser for the production.

Kondelik shares Upstage Productions’ artistic philosophy: “Whether on stage or in the classroom, we strive for artistic excellence that entertains, challenges, and inspires. Our mission is to celebrate the joy of live performance while elevating voices and provoking meaningful dialogue,” she says.
