Dania Beach A City Rich In History Discovering The Timeless Charms Of Broward County’s First City, Dania Beach. With its charming streets, rich heritage, and historical landmarks, Dania Beach stands tall as the oldest city in Broward County, Florida. Steeped in a captivating past that dates back to the 1880’s, this quaint town has overcome various trials and tribulations to become the thriving community it is today. Pioneering Beginnings The roots of Dania Beach can be traced back to the late 19th Century when W. C. Valentine, a visionary pioneer and developer, recognized the strategic advantage of the region due to the laying of the Florida East Coast (FEC) Railroad Line through the area. Inspired by this newfound opportunity, Valentine envisioned a settlement he named Modello. Intriguingly, 12 Danish families from Chicago became the first settlers to move to Modello from 1898-1899. A few years later, in 1902, A.C. Frost, one of the early residents, built the town’s first general store and donated the first two schools. Dania’s growth was further propelled by the establishment of the Dania Methodist Church in the same year, which became the city’s first place of worship. From Modello To Dania A City Is Born In November 1904, Modello was officially incorporated as a Dania Beach, Page 6A

Hallandale Beach Residents There Are Programs To Help If You Are In Need If you struggle with providing food for yourself and your family, you may qualify for The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP). If you don’t qualify for TEFAP, Project Lifeline provides food distribution without registration. The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) is a federal program that helps supplement the diets of Low-Income Americans, including elderly people, by providing them with Emergency Food Assistance at no cost. Through TEFAP, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) purchases a variety of Nutritious, High-Quality USDA Foods and makes those foods available to state distributing agencies. Food Programs The Human Services Department offers two Food Distribution programs that provide tem-
porary assistance to residents of Hallandale Beach. The Food Pantry at The Hepburn Center houses a pantry consisting of canned items, staple foods and meats available to those in need. The pantry is open Monday through Friday, but you must see a Social Worker before receiving any food. Individuals are interviewed to ensure they meet eligibility requirements. The Center accepts donations from individuals, groups/organizations, and businesses. USDA Monthly Food Distribution Program - This is a Federal entitlement program that provides food items to individuals and families the first Wednesday of each month from 8 am – 12 pm at the Hepburn Center. If you are in need of assistance and to find out about the next food distribution at the Hepburn Center, located at 1000 Northwest 8th Avenue, Hallandale Beach, Florida 33009
or to schedule an appointment to determine eligibility for TEFAP, please call the City’s Human Services Department at: (954) 457-1460. You must pre-qualify through an interview process and be registered for the service.

Unleashing The Flying Disc Disc Golf Welcomes All To The Great Outdoors Have you ever heard of a sport that combines the thrill of Frisbee with the strategic finesse of Golf? If not, it’s kind of like what Pickleball is to Tennis. Disc Golf is a rapidly growing pastime that has captured the hearts of outdoor enthusiasts around the world. Picture a serene park, lush green fairways and players gracefully sending discs soaring through the air, aiming for distant baskets. Welcome to the captivating realm of Disc Golf! Disc Golf, also known as
Frisbee Golf, shares many similarities with traditional Golf. However, instead of using clubs and balls, players employ specially designed flying discs to navigate their way through a course consisting of strategically positioned targets. These targets, often referred to as “baskets,” are elevated metal cages with chains that catch the discs, simulating the hole in traditional Golf. The origins of Disc Golf can be traced back to the 1970’s when “Steady” Ed Headrick, known as the Father of Disc Golf,
