Written during a turbulent time in the composer’s life, the expressive brilliance of returning SFSO guest artist Siwoo Kim, will bring a passionate take on the demanding and dramatic work.

Siwoo Kim is an “incisive” and “compelling” violinist (The New York Times) who “plays with stylistic sensitivity and generous tonal nuance” (The Chicago Tribune). Kim actively performs as soloist and chamber musician and he is the Founding Co-Artistic Director of VIVO Music Festival in his hometown of Columbus, Ohio. Since his Carnegie Hall concerto debut with the Juilliard Orchestra, he has gone on to perform as soloist with orchestras in four different continents including Tucson Symphony, Houston Symphony, Columbus Symphony, Seongnam Philharmonic, Johannesburg Philharmonic, and Orchestre Royal de Chambre de Wallonie. As chamber musician, he performs regularly at festivals. He is the principal violinist of Music From Copland House. Habitat For Humanity Of Broward Celebrates

Completion Of North Lauderdale Townhomes

Habitat for Humanity of Broward held a dedication ceremony on Monday, February 9th, 2026 to celebrate the completion of North Lauderdale Townhomes in Broward County. The ceremony recognized the completion of eight townhomes, now home to eight families representing approximately 20 residents, all first-time homeowners. Joined by local dignitaries, volunteers, sponsors, and community partners, Habitat Broward officially dedicated the homes and handed over the keys to the families, each of whom completed 300 hours of sweat equity over the past year as part of Habitat’s homeownership program.

The event included remarks from Ralph Stone, Director of Housing Finance and Community Development for Broward County Government and Broward County Commissioner Michael Udine, who both spoke to the importance of affordable housing and public-private partnerships in Broward County.

“Homeownership provides stability for families and strengthens communities,”

said Stone. “Projects like North Lauderdale Townhomes demonstrate how collaboration can expand access to affordable workforce housing.”

“Safe, stable housing is the foundation of a strong community,” added Udine.

“Habitat’s North Lauderdale Townhomes is a great example of how public-private partnerships can create real opportunities for working families while strengthening neighborhoods and generating long-term economic benefits for our county.”

The North Lauderdale Townhomes are expected to generate $584,000 in property tax revenue over the next 10 years, reinvested directly into the local community and supporting long-term neighborhood stability.

The 28th Annual Afro Roots Fest In Islamorada

A Day Of Live Music Featuring Cortadito, Everglades Songbook Suite, Sanba Zao, And Famato

The NonProfit organization Community Arts and Culture (CAC) has by now become synonymous with curating and producing the longest-running world music event Afro Roots Fest. On Saturday, April 4th, 2026, the award-winning festival returns to the Morada Way Arts and Cultural district and the Florida Keys Brewing Company, located at 81611 Old Highway, Islamorada, Florida 33036, beginning at 12:00 p.m. Noon with a series of workshops, and featuring Cortadito (Cuba), the Everglades Songbook Suite (U.S.), Sanba Zao (Haiti), Famato (Guinea, West Africa), percussion and instrument-making workshops, vendors, and more. The event is a free event, with a few ticketed workshops, and all ages welcome.

“The flavor of this year’s festival is decidedly Caribbean, with a dash of West Africa, and I am proud to once again present these acts to the global music fans of South Florida,” says Grammy-nominated musician, composer, and producer Jose Elias. “It’s my pleasure to continue to bring world music programming to the Florida Keys, and I am looking forward to this year’s event.” Elias is known for his work with Cortadito and will perform with his other project, the Everglades Songbook Suite ensemble.

Since its origins thirteen years ago, Cortadito has evolved into one of the torchbearers of a pop culture phenomenon that is two centuries strong. A traditional folk and acoustic band named the Miami New Times’ Best of Miami “Best Latin Act” in 2009, the band focuses on performing one of the earliest styles of Cuban country music known as Son (pronounced sOwn), their sound can best be described as reminiscent of the famed Buena Vista Social Club. Last year, Cortadito released a full-length album titled The Guajiro Triangle which features guest performances by Nestor Torres and Aymee Nuviola, including a fourth single and video titled “Lo Que te Cuento es Poco.”

school called the Bazilo Ecole Communautairei, which was one of the first to reopen after the 2010 earthquake that devastated his home country. Sanba Zao has also sings and tours with Lakou Mizik and performed with other Haitian groups such as Group Sa, Foula Jazz, and Djakata.

Famato is a West African musical ensemble based in Gainesville, Florida that plays traditional music from Guinea, particularly from the Mandinka tribe. The group’s name is a Sanso word that means “come and see,” and is led by Aboubacar “Amo” Soumah, a master drummer from Guinea, West Africa. They play instruments such as the Djembe drum and the balafon combined with vocals.

Workshops include Percussion for Peace Workshops led by master artists Soumah and members of Sanba Zao, as well as community partner Power of Percussion. Families and youth can participate in instrument-building workshops through The Inheritants Project, CAC’s Miami-based AfroIndigenous youth music and dance initiative. Understanding low vision

You may have low vision if you can’t see well enough to read, drive, recognize faces, distinguish colors or see screens clearly.

Many different eye conditions can cause low vision, but the most common causes are age-related macular degeneration, cataracts, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy, a condition that can cause vision loss in people with diabetes.

The most common types of low vision are:

• Central vision loss (not being able to see things in the center of your vision)

• Peripheral vision loss (not being able to see things out of the corners of your eyes)

• Night blindness (not being able to see in low light)

• Blurry or hazy vision

On Sunday, March 8th, 2026 at 9:00 a.m. sharp, hundreds of volunteers will gather with a shared purpose: to ensure that more than 500 homebound seniors and Holocaust Survivors feel remembered, honored, and cared for this Passover. The Annual JCS Matzah Mitzvah returns in 2026 with renewed energy, deeper connection, and a clear message to the community — our seniors are counting on you.

Organized by Jewish Community Services of South Florida (JCS), this beloved initiative transforms the weeks before Passover into a hands-on experience of kindness. Volunteers don’t just pack food; they deliver dignity. They don’t simply assemble baskets; they carry stories, heritage, and human connection straight to the doorsteps of those who need it most.

And this year, spots are filling quickly.

A Morning That Matters

The day begins promptly at 9:00 a.m. at two community locations:

• North - Scheck Hillel Community School

• South - Bet Shira Congregation

From the moment volunteers arrive, the atmosphere is charged with purpose. Tables fill with Passover essentials — matzah, shelf-stable holiday foods, and thoughtfully selected personal hygiene items. Every box is assembled with care, knowing that for many recipients, this delivery is more than practical support — it is a lifeline to the community.

Clients expect their deliveries between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m., making punctuality essential. Delivery assignments are first come, first served. Arriving late may mean missing the opportunity to deliver. This is not a drop-in event. It is a coordinated mission.

More Than a Basket

Passover is a holiday rooted in memory, resilience, and freedom. For Holocaust Survivors in our community, those themes are deeply personal. A holiday basket is not simply a convenience; it is a reaffirmation that their lives and stories matter.

Many recipients are over 80 or 90 years old. Some live alone. Others are physically unable to shop or prepare for the holiday without assistance. Through JCS Matzah Mitzvah, volunteers bridge the gap between isolation and inclusion. Each knock on the door carries warmth. Each smile exchanged reinforces that no one is forgotten. Participation requires commitment — and that’s part of what makes it meaningful.

Volunteers will dedicate up to four hours to both packing and delivering Passover food and personal hygiene baskets. Packing only is not allowed; every participant completes the full experience. Delivery drivers should be prepared to travel 25+ miles if needed. Assignments depend on demand and geography, and flexibility ensures that every senior receives their package on time. All volunteers over age 18 must be registered in advance. Children under 18 no longer need to register, but must be accompanied by an adult for the entirety of the event. Registration closes on March 1st, 2026. There will be no walk-ins or guest changes after that date. All guests must present their registration ticket and photo ID at the door. Without these items, entry will be denied. These guidelines aren’t barriers — they’re safeguards that allow the operation to run smoothly and respectfully for the vulnerable clients who depend on it.

The Vibe: Community, Caring, Connection Step into the packing room and you’ll feel it immediately. Multi-generational volunteers working side by side. Parents teaching children about giving back. Teens lifting boxes. Adults coordinating routes. Friends laughing as they tape packages shut.

Then comes the delivery — often the most moving part of the morning.

Volunteers are welcomed into living rooms adorned with family photos and memories of decades past. Conversations unfold about childhood Seders, immigra-

tion journeys, grandchildren, and hope. Sometimes the exchange lasts just a few minutes. Sometimes it lingers. But it always matters. This is what a community looks like in action. Matzah Mitzvah is a reflection of this mission — practical support delivered with compassion.

The need is real. More than 500 seniors and Holocaust Survivors are expecting deliveries this year. Many rely on fixed incomes. Some have limited family nearby. All deserve to celebrate Passover with dignity.

The Historic Stranahan House Museum To Host Pineapple Jam

Party in paradise for preservation! On Friday, April 10th, 2026 from 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m., the Historic Stranahan House Museum will turn into a lively tropical paradise for Pineapple Jam, an unforgettable evening of open bars, live music and delicious food.

The picturesque New River will create the perfect backdrop for the casual tropical soiree at Broward County’s oldest and most historic home. More than 300 community leaders, adorned in tropical chic attire, will come together to celebrate both Fort Lauderdale’s history and the future. Guests will also have the opportunity to bid on one-of-a-kind items and exclusive experiences through a raffle and silent auction.

Co-chaired by Marianna Seiler DeJager and Brianna Reeves, Pineapple Jam is the Historic Stranahan House Museum’s largest annual fundraising event. Travel has a way of slowing time down, creating memories for loved ones that last long after suitcases are unpacked and regular routines return. For many Americans, their most treasured family memories took place on a vacation or trip rather than at home.

In fact, nearly 67% said they value a core memory more than a physical souvenir after a vacation, according to a survey commissioned by Holland America Line, a cruise line that has been exploring Alaska for nearly 80 years. What’s more, almost 86% of survey respondents said they have looked at photos or videos from a past trip to lift their mood, and more than 90% said positive travel memories can improve their mood during difficult times.

With Alaska on the travel bucket list of more than two-thirds of Americans, it’s a destination that is influencing experience-focused family adventures.

Explore Curiosities

Travel is about more than seeing new places. For many Americans, it’s also a time to learn, explore new interests and slow down. Booking a cruise can encourage those behaviors.

According to the survey, 61% of Americans are more likely to try new foods while traveling on a cruise, and nearly half (48%) said they’ve discovered a new interest or hobby during their cruise,

including wildlife, food, history or culture. For example, cruise guests may be able to try local specialties, like fresh Alaskan seafood, reindeer sausage, birch syrup and Alaskan berries, while on board.

Unstructured time is part of the appeal of cruises, with 28% of respondents sharing they read more during their trips.

Focus on Nature

Nature-focused destinations stand out because they offer experiences that feel rare and immersive, especially in places where wildlife and landscapes are central to the journey. More than 4 in 10 survey respondents said seeing wildlife in nature would be the most memorable family vacation experience, compared with about 12% who said meeting a character at a theme park would stand out most.

Whether spotting whales, watching glaciers calve or seeing the Northern Lights stretch across the Alaskan sky, the landscape being part of the experience helps define the journey. To help guests witness the majestic animals found in Alaska, including whales, eagles, bears, moose, otters, seals, sea lions and more, Holland America Line carries a wildlife expert on board. In addition to shared memories, more than 91% said travel had a positive impact on their mental and emotional well-being.
