Darron and Eliana Burke are Aventura residents and co-founders of Burke Brands Inc., a small batch roasting coffee company famous for their signature Café Don Pablo and Pablo’s Pride blends. Two decades ago, Darron Burke left Massachusetts to get away from the cold winters and moved to Miami. Amidst the palm trees and beautiful beaches, he discovered a zest for Latin culture where Darron met his future wife, Eliana, a native of Colombia. She brought him to her home country to meet her family of fourth-generation coffee growers and roasters. Enchanted with the beauty of the South American country’s lush green mountains and lush valleys, Burke was taken aback by how delicious the coffee tasted unlike any cup of Java he tasted in the United States. “I never tasted coffee so good; it’s rich, smooth and delicious.” At the roasting facility located six miles from Aventura, Darron Burke is sitting in his office and converses in Spanish as well as any native speaker. He drinks his coffee black savoring the flavors of his
favorite beverage and talks passionately about his family owned company. “Café Don Pablo coffee can be purchased at Sam’s Club and Costco in the southeast. We also sell to the Compass Group, one of the largest food service companies in the world who provide cafeteria services to institutions and big companies,” Burke said. Before starting the company, the Burkes traveled back and forth from Columbia to the United States where they would return with bags of coffee beans and give them to family and friends. Discovering the demand for the coffee, the couple decided to try their luck in the coffee business and bought their first Turkish built roaster seven years ago. Interested in learning the business ground up, Burke said, “We recognized an opportunity and began to travel more extensively in South America meeting with the farmers and forged relationships with coffee producers.” This family-owned business has small farms in Columbia and many of their friends supply beans from various growing regions. “We also have access to
the world’s finest Arabica coffee grown in Guatemala, Costa Rica, Brazil, Honduras and Peru. These beans grow high in the mountains and are more flavorful, smoother and less acidic.” Café Don Pablo is affiliated with a program called Sharing Certified. which voters elect their public officials. Districts are redrawn to accommodate population changes and ensure that district populations are balanced. Frustrated the border has been pushed further east, Margolis said, “The district I represent has not grown proportionate to the rest of the state and my district would have to pick up approximately 30,000 seats.” Currently there are only 12 Democrats in the Florida Senate out of 40 members, presenting more challenges for the Democratic Party. According to Margolis the demeanor in Tallahassee has shifted considerably.

Excitement was in the air at the 2nd annual ‘Fashion’s Night Out,’ held at the Aventura Mall. Considered a kick-off party for the fashion industry prompting everyone to start purchasing their new fall wardrobe. The idea to celebrate fashion and shopping was conceived by Vogue Editorin-Chief Anna Wintour. The event’s objective is to restore consumer confidence during this frayed economy. Since its inauguration, ‘Fashion’s Night Out’ tapestry has taken form to include: New York, Los Angeles and Atlanta among hundreds of U.S. cities and globally: London, Paris, China, Japan and Brazil. As guests gathered to sip wine and cocktails they saw and critiqued a glamorous runway fashion show in the mall’s center court. Health Answers to parents’ common questions about their growing child (ARA) - Newborn or tween, toddler or teen, a child’s developmental progress is always a source of questions for parents. Each stage of life comes with its own unique set of joys and challenges, and parents are always looking for information that can help them guide their children through every phase. Plenty of books provide parents with information on birth, infancy and toddlerhood. However, that time period just after toddler years but before they start school full-time is much more loosely defined. Parents may be unsure of what to expect in terms of their child’s growth and development, but realize their concerns usually don’t warrant a call to their pediatrician. “It’s important for parents to be able to have their concerns addressed about their child’s development,” says pediatrician Jennifer Trachtenberg, chief pediatric officer for RealAge.com and a member of the GoodNites NiteLite Panel, a group of pediatricians and parenting experts. “Many of the things that parents worry about are perfectly normal for growing kids, and children will eventually outgrow these phases.”

Thumb-sucking Sucking is instinctive for infants. It’s a way to get nourishment and is comforting for babies and young children. Treatment may include talking to your child about the side effects of thumbsucking, including teeth movement and germs, starting a rewards system or providing a visual reminder like a bracelet or watch. Most of all, be patient, consistent and provide encouragement. Speech development Children’s speech skills begin developing in infancy, long before they can actually talk. By the time they are 2 years old, most children can use two- or three-word phrases, name virtually everything around them and be understood by family members. At age 5, most children can easily be understood by
strangers and can communicate complex concepts. Parents may be concerned if their child mispronounces words or seems to struggle with expressing complex communications. Rest assured, it’s probably just part of the process of growing up. As always, discuss serious concerns with a pediatrician, who may refer your child to a speech pathologist or an audiologist for testing. “It’s perfectly normal for parents to worry about developmental phases,” says Dr. Trachtenberg. “Time, patience and some comforting tactics will usually help children continue to thrive as they outgrow common developmental issues.”

Family Caregivers Face Pain Challenges (NewsUSA) - Every day, many Americans find themselves in an unexpected new role. They become a family caregiver for a loved one suffering from chronic pain. Experts estimate pain affects 76 million Americans, more people than diabetes, coronary heart disease, and cancer combined. Pain can interfere with daily activities, and those affected may need help from family and friends. Providing care for a loved one experiencing chronic pain presents a unique set of challenges, such as making sure your loved one reports pain to his or her healthcare provider and that your loved one’s pain is taken seriously by those who provide care. “Each person may feel pain differently. Although it is a physical sensation, perceptions of pain are influenced by social, cultural, and psychological factors,” said Suzanne Mintz, president and CEO of the National Family Caregivers Association. “It can be difficult to make sure your loved one’s pain is evaluated appropriately.” Unfortunately, there has been little information and few resources available to help family caregivers cope with these problems. Caregivers Association has teamed up with the national pain management education program Partners Against Pain to create Caregiver Cornerstones, a new program that provides information, encouragement, and tools to family caregivers who are caring for loved ones suffering from chronic pain. The four Caregiver Cornerstones are: 1. Learning about pain management. Taking an active role in helping to manage a loved one’s pain may help you feel more useful and worry less. 2. Caring for a person with pain. This includes making sure that patients receive proper assessment and follow their treatment plans. 3. Caring for yourself. Being a family caregiver can be a demanding job. Allow others to help provide a support system. 4. Advocating for all people in pain. The Caregiver Cornerstones program offers guidance on raising awareness about the importance of access to appropriate and effective pain care. Weight-loss surgery communication lacking in doctor’s offices (ARA) - An estimated 72 million adults currently are affected by obesity in the U.S. Yet, significant barriers are keeping adults affected by obesity and their primary care physicians from talking openly about bariatric, or weight loss surgery. Bariatric surgery is the most effective treatment available for morbid obesity and can result in the improvement or complete resolution of obesity-related health conditions, such as type 2 diabetes and sleep apnea. Yet, only one in 10 who meet the National Institutes of Health guidelines for bariatric surgery have had their doctor recommend it, according to a national survey sponsored by the Obesity Action Coalition and Ethicon Endo-Surgery. The survey also found that health care professionals tend to underestimate patients’ willingness to discuss their weight and their receptiveness to discuss bariatric surgery. Six in
10 physicians believe most individuals affected by obesity are too embarrassed to discuss their weight with a health care professional. However, more than four out of five reported they are not too embarrassed, suggesting the conversation would be welcomed. “Health care professionals should be having detailed discussions with people suffering from obesity about all of their treatment options, including bariatric surgery,” says Joe Nadglowski, president and CEO for Obesity Action Coalition. “These survey results highlight the need for increased dialogue between patients and physicians around obesity, a disease where treatment can effectively manage symptoms and prevent untimely deaths.” The survey also found that the top perceived drawback of bariatric surgery for individuals affected by obesity is the

Falling home values are a cause for concern for millions of American homeowners, mortgage lenders and the federal government.
