City landmarks light up pink for good cause

Tauranga is set to turn pink this October, sending a message of support and hope during Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Seven prominent landmarks and buildings across the city are joining more than 90 sites around the country lighting up in pink as part of the Global Illuminatioons campaign

They are Beacon Wharf, Masonic Park, Waterfront Park North, Waterfront Playground, Tunks Reserve, Tunks Street Lights, and Wharf Street Lights, said d Breast Cancer Foundation NZ (BCNZ)

In additioon, the big screen at Mount Maunganui’s Bay Oval will display breast cancer awareness messaging throughout the month

Early

detection best

The displays are helping BCNZ to remind New Zealanders that early detection is the best way to save lives from breast cancer

The campaign also illuminates the charity’s annual Pink Ribbon Strreet Appeal, taking place on Friday, October

17, and Saturday, October 18, when thousands of volunteers will be out in force shaking pink buckets to collect donations for breast cancer research, education campaigns and patient support programmes

BCNZ chief executive Ah-Leen Rayner said this October her organisation was on New Zealanders to back their vision of stopping deaths from breast cancer

“While most people diagnosed with breast cancer survive and go on to live long, fulfilling lives, we still lose 650 Kiwis every year to the disease – our mission is to change that

“With support from the people of Bay of Plenty, and right across the country, we know we can make a bigger difference

“Please take a moment to take care of your breast health, or remind the women you love to do so, and get involved with Breast Cancer Awareness Month in any way you can ”

‘breast aware ’

BCNZ urged all women to be ‘breast aware ’ to give themselves the best chance of

surviving the disease – that means getting to know the normal look and feel of their breasts, regularly touching and looking for any changes, and getting changes checked by a GP as soon as possible For women aged 45-69, free mammograms are available through BreastScreen Aotearoa every two years

BCFNZ is a not-forprofit, non-government funded organisation that depends on donations and fundraising for its work in breast cancer education and awareness, medical research and training grants, advocacy, and supporting Kiwis with breast cancer BCFNZ’s programmes are evidencebased, and overseen by its medical advisory committee, said Rayner

Appeal volunteers

BCNZ was still looking for volunteers to take part in its Pink Ribbon Street Appeal For more information on this and other ways to get involved with Breast Cancer Awareness Month, visit: breastcancerfoundation org nz/ bcam

ChurchesActiveInOurCommunity

There’s no doubt about it; we live in an amazing country with stunning scenery

On a recent trip to the Far North, we woke to see the beauty of a sunrise over a town

We looked upon the mirror calm water of a harbour as we enjoyed breakfast on the deck in the sunshine We saw farmland, rainbows, beautiful coastline, new houses, old houses and stunning architecture.

We’ve been to that areabefore, but it’s changed a bit Our memories of the area sometimes did not help us find our way around because it was so different Roads, houses, shops, factories, vacant land All different from the picture in our memory

We found thatthings are changing in churches too Something is happening in churches all over New Zealand. People from all walks of life are headingfor church, as they are in many churches worldwide Big ones, small ones, ornateones, ordinary ones, are experiencing something amazing People are showing up and getting along to churches

And young people are a major group in that number

Some churches arehaving the largest Alpha Courses – a resource churches use to create a space where people are excited to invite friends into a conversation about

Jesus – they’ve ever had Others are seeing an increase in their baptisms It’s aprivilege to see this happening and to be part of it Ah yes, there’s change all right, and it’s changing for
