Ready, set, chop! Neville Bowen from Tauranga can cut a log of wood in about 51 seconds, while world champion Jack Jordan does it in 17 seconds. Jordan and his fearsome display of technique and power can be seen by all at the Mount Maunganui RSA on Saturday

from 12.30pm. The event is free to the public, with the RSA providing food and beverages. Plenty of action will be displayed, with six teams bringing their best to inside the Mount RSA. Woodchopping is a true family sport,

passed down from grandfather to father to daughter. “I taught my daughter,” he said. Bowen said a secret to woodchopping is not throwing the axe at the log but driving it into the wood with skill and precision.

“You stand back and hit it with speed,” he said. To prevent injuries, some of the choppers will wear chainmail leggings and socks, he said. All ages are welcome to attend. Read more on page 12. Photo: Bob Tulloch.
