‘It’s time for you Mum’ Tragedy and loss can be just the motivation some of us need to make positive changes to our lives. After sadness and grief, we can find meaning, pleasure and success again. Ask Karen Humphreys of Ōmanawa. After losing her son 11 years ago,
she threw herself into a robust health and exercise regime – triathlons, halfmarathons, mud-runs and boxing. Now aged 61, she’s off to the IPF World Classic & Equipped Masters Powerlifting Champs and the Commonwealth Powerlifting Championships in October to
defend her 2023 world powerlifting title. The lifter, who squats twice her own body weight, is hoping to build on her world championship wins in Mongolia last year. It’s a demanding routine – four gym sessions a week and each one up to three hours. And all that around her work.
Plus, her food regime is a science in itself. Her only problem is a head one. She will explain as we travel down Karen’s disciplined road to the world powerlifting championships in Sun City, South Africa, on page 9. Photo: John Borren.
