Glenn calls time He will still hear the Te Puke Fire Station’s siren wailing in the night, he will still wonder what’s going down, whether it’s a fire, an accident or a medical call-out. But Glenn Williams can deservedly resist

the urge to answer the call, he can stay in bed. Because it’s all over. After 44 years of service to the volunteer fire brigade, after more than four decades years of putting out house fires, factory

fires, of turning out to gruesome accidents and medical incidents, Glenn has retired. He’s handed over his Te Puke chief fire officer helmet to his deputy Dale Lindsay. This week Glenn talks to The Weekend

Sun about the sacrifices, the stresses, the tragedy, the enduring sadness and the fulfilment that come with being a volunteer firefighter. Glenn and his firefighter’s story is on page 8-9. Photo: John Borren.
