Māori cultural heritage manager Dean Flavell part of a waka, possibly dating back to the 16th century, was pulled from the Waiari Stream over
the holidays. “This is a true taonga. It’s a gift from the old people,” said Flavell. He believed that waka most likely
belonged to either the Tawakeptio or the Makahae marae and had floated away and got stuck beneath the water. Read more on page 4.
