Katikatiās memorial hall will become a sea of feathers, glitter, and architectural headgear on Easter Saturday, April 4, as her clubās newest community event gets under way
Katikati Lions Club is hosting its inaugural Easter Bonnet Extravaganza at Easter time ā with prizes up for grabs for preschoolers through to adults who create the best Eastern bonnet creations āRight now we need more peoplefrom youngsters to adult to register for the competition We want to see as many bonnets as possible created and entered,ā said Hurne
The competition is open to everyone, with three categories The Little Bunnies is for children aged 10 and under First place wins $50, second $30 and third $20
Creative Teens is for youth aged 11-17 year, with a single first prize of $200 up for grabs
For adults aged 18-plus thereās the Master Makers category, with the winner taking home $300. Lastly, the category winners could take home the Katikati Lions Supreme Award with a cash prize of $400
Fun and frivolity
Hurne said the Lions were on a mission to inject some much-needed āfun and frivolityā into the heart of the town after a period where community
spirits have been testeed
āWe really felt the coommunity needed something light-heartted,ā Hurne said
āThis isnāt just abouut winning a prize ā itās about the joy of making something ridiculous and sharing g a laugh with your neighbours
āWe want to see the most outrageous designs people can dream up!ā
Hurne urged people ā young and old āto register for the commpetition now and then get busy creating g ahead of Easter Saturday, April 4
āOn Easter Saturdayy, the Lions will have the Katikati memmorial hall set up waiting for entrants to o arrive with their creations
Easter Saturday y prizegiving
āFrom 9am to midday, the Easter Bonnet Extravaganza prizegiving promises to be a vibraant spectacle for all ages, ā Hurne said Entrants will need to o wear their creations, with three judges set to select winners The event wiill feature live buskers, local food venndors, and a coffee cart to keep the creative energy high, Hurne said
The Lions had also isssued a ācreative challengeā to local busiinesses to get involved by either entering their own corporate-themed bonnet or by sponsoring a maker ā providing local youth with ribbons, sparkles, and supplies needed to bring their visions to life

āKatikati has always been a town of makers and artists,ā Hurne said āWhether you ā re a professional crafter or someone who hasnāt touched a glue gun in 20 years ā we want you there Itās time to put our heads together and celebrate!ā
