A great many in the 20th Century tried to disprove the Bible’s historical claims through archaeology. There were times when criticisms seemed overwhelming. The sceptics were prolific writers, and the media loved it too! One example was how Jesus was supposed to have been born at the time of a national census when Quirinius was governor of Syria (Luke 2:1-3). The problem was that a census under Quirinius was found to have happened in A.D.9 – a dozen years too late. It was argued that there was thus (a) no such census in B.C.4, (b) there was no governor Quirinius at that time, and (c) that the claim that everyone had to return to their ancestral home for such census’ was
false (because it sounded silly). But then archaeology discovered the Romans had an enrolment of taxpayers every 14 years - and one lined up perfectly to the census Luke wrote of. Also that a man named Quirinius had been governor then too (whether the same man or another is not known). And a papyrus found in Egypt confirmed then that the crazy Romans really did make everyone go to their ancestral home for such census’. (See Josh McDowell, New Evidence That Demands a Verdict (Thomas Nelson Publishers, 1999), p63 or Ian Wishart, The Divinity Code (Moon Publishing, 2007), p128-132.) Today, there are more than 25,000 sites dating to Old Testament times alone. Contrary to popular criticism, in the words of sceptic Nelson Glueck, “… it may be stated categorically that no archaeological discovery has ever controverted a biblical reference”, yet scores have been found that have
confirmed the history, and in exact detail.” (See Jeffrey Shelter, “Is the Bible True?” US News and World Report, Oct. 25, 1999, p52.) There are a lot of reasons for having confidence in our faith – and it is a confidence that is needed. The Bible gives basis for value, purpose and hope, and we humans need such things! Stand tall – the book isn’t just stories – there is hope!
