Accepting responsibility Responsibility. Wow, what a word! It’s a powerful word, but sadly a lacking value in much of today’s society. In the face of some very difficult societal problems it’s easy to say, “it’s the parents fault”, “it’s the children’s fault”, “it’s the Government’s fault”, “it’s the council’s fault”, or “it’s whoever’s fault”. But interestingly, we never hear “it’s my fault”. Recently I came across an excellent quote: “Rich yet very poor: We have taller buildings yet shorter tempers; wider motorways yet narrower viewpoints; we spend more yet have less; we buy more yet enjoy it less. “We have bigger houses and smaller families; more conveniences but less time; we have more degrees but less common sense; more knowledge but less judgment; more experts but more problems; more medicine but less wellness. “We have multiplied our possessions but reduced our values; we talk too much, love too seldom, and lie too often. “We’ve learned how to make a living but not a life; we’ve added years to life but not life to years.
“We’ve been all the way to the moon and back but have trouble crossing the street to meet the new neighbour. We’ve split the atom but not our prejudice; we write more but learn less; plan more but accomplish less. “We’ve learned to rush but not to wait; we have higher incomes but lower morals; more food but less appeasement; more acquaintances but fewer friends. “These are times of tall men and short character, or more leisure and less fun, more kinds of food but less nutrition. These are days of two incomes but more divorce; of fancier houses but broken homes. “We spend too recklessly, laugh too little, drive too fast, get angry too quickly, stay up too late, get up too tired, read too seldom, watch TV too much and pray too seldom.” What this world needs is people taking responsibility for their own actions and subsequent consequences.
