New voter packs for the 2012 TECT Trustee election have been mailed to all eligible consumers from 26th July. They will be arriving in letterboxes over the next few days. The new voter packs have been designed to look significantly different from the originals. Consumers still holding original voter packs are asked to destroy them. Any votes cast on the old voting papers are invalid and wont count. The twenty-three candidates standing for election have remained unchanged. Hearing His words without tradition I became a Christian in Africa in the early 80s. It was a fabulous time. It was obvious how much God meant to those African people and He was changing people’s lives. I then returned home and found a church which, although different, was alive in many ways. Later, though, we became
focused on building our own hierarchical empire. Like the Israelites of long ago, we wanted leaders to stand between ourselves and God and like the Babylonians, we were building an impressive system. Most of what we believed and said was right but our focus was not on God’s kingdom. We need to focus on Jesus and His Word rather than on “church” and our

Beware the promises you make

A few weeks ago I was preparing a study for one of our home bible study groups on a man in the Old Testament called Jephthah.

He was one of the judges of Israel before they had a king and his story is found in the book of Judges chapter 11. He was a soldier and was asked to lead Israel in battle. The thing that interests me about him is that he on two occasions goes to negotiate with the enemy and see if the issue can be solved without the loss of life associated with war. Both times they are unable to come to an agreement, so the war happens and both times he wins. So it would indicate that he is a capable soldier but also a wise man in his dealing with others. In the middle of the story we see him make this rash impromptu oath to God that if he wins the war he will sac-
rifice the first thing that comes out of his house door. This happens to be his beloved daughter, which makes for a very difficult situation for him and it seems amazing that a man who is so wise in preparing for a battle should make such a rash oath. And it goes
to reminds us that we need to be aware of the promises that we make to God and to others. That they are not rash and we are able to keep the promises we have made. The bible says it is better not to promise than to promise and not be able to keep it.
