Some change we welcome – decaying fruit rotting to compost, a helpless baby becoming a friend as an adult; we call it development and progress. Some change we shun – failing memory and body parts, friends and family moving away or reaching the end of life’s journey; we call it deterioration and loss. Yet we have all grown up expecting the world to change. Creation has an in-built rhythm of change: the spin of the planet produces a kaleidoscope of shifting light and shadows, the constellations revolve round the night sky; the constant movement of water in river and ocean
holds our gaze. Institutions, including the church, can be hard to change. The challenge is to balance, retaining what is vital to our identity and important to being who we are, with the adaptation needed to stay relevant to the communities where we live and able to proclaim the message of the gospel: God’s love for all. As Christians we ask ourselves: what traditions and old understandings are no longer helpful? What new expressions of faith can convey the good news that God cares for creation, for you and for me? The last days, according to scripture In Matthew 24:3, the disciples ask Jesus: “What will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?” – referring to Jesus coming for the Church at the Rapture and to His second coming as the Lion of the Tribe of Judah, when He will receive the Kingdom from His Father in the Ancient of Days and when He begins His millennial reign. Jesus then points to a number of significant signs that relate to those last days including wars and rumours of wars, famines, earthquakes, great lawlessness, as well
as the apostasy of the Church which includes false prophets, teachers and apostles – and false Christs! He also speaks about the “abomination of desolation” referring to the anti-Christ standing in the Holy of Holies in the rebuilt temple in Jerusalem and pronouncing Himself as the Christ, the Messiah. In verse 8, Jesus says that when people see the signs He mentions, specifically rumours of wars, famines and earthquakes, then these signs are the beginning of birth-pangs. to point out in this (short) article. Firstly, when a woman is in labour, the birth-pangs increase in intensity and in frequency. Secondly, although there can be fluctuations in intensity and frequency, once the birth-pangs start, the birth process is irreversible. We live in a time where wars and rumours of wars, famines, earthquakes, lawlessness and falsehood have greatly increased in intensity and in frequency, like never before. The labour pangs of the last days have begun and the outcome is settled. Also, Israel is God's prophetic end-time clock. All biblical prophecies that relate to the last days require Israel to be back in the land that God gave them in an everlasting covenant; and they require Israel to be established again as a nation. It is also significant that preparations are underway, and discussions are in place, for the rebuilding of the temple in Jerusalem. Putting all the signs together, we are living in the last days and the Bridegroom is coming soon for His Bride, who must be ready and looking for His return. Are you looking for His coming?
