Greater expectations for the New Year Another year has rolled over and before us we have a blank canvas on which we and God can write another twelve month chapter in our history. What an exciting time to be looking forward with expectation to all that this year 2013 can bring. I love a verse published in 1908. It was written by Minnie Louise Hawkins and she gave it the title ‘God Knows’. But we more often know it by the name ‘The Gate of the Year. The poem came to public attention when the then Princess Elizabeth handed a copy to her father King George VI and he quoted it in is 1939 Christmas broadcast. In 2002, the words of ‘The Gate of the Year’ were read out at the state funeral of The Queen Mother. The verse says this: And I said to the man who stood at the gate of the year: “Give me a
light that I may tread safely into the unknown.” And he replied: “Go out into the darkness and put your hand into the Hand of God. That shall be to you better than light and safer than a known way.” So I went forth, and finding the Hand of God, trod gladly into the night. And we head into 2013 many will enter this year with a sense of the unknown and even a sense of trepidation. Perhaps 2012 was not a good year for you but the words of this verse could be your turning point. Go out into the darkness and put your hand into the hand of God, And may you know safety and peace in the way before you. You may have never trusted God to walk with you but could I encourage you to include him in your journey... He’s only a prayer away. Have a great year!
