The club is currently living out of containers at Waimarino Kayak Tours Adventure Park and cannot grow until it has its own space. It approached Tauranga City Council in January looking for help finding a site beside the river for a 250 square metre clubrooms with flat water access, where it can store canoes; house showers, toilets and changing rooms; and have car parking. The club’s approach to council coincided with Canoe Racing New Zealand and High Performance Sport New Zealand including the Wairoa River on the short list of locations for the development of a canoe racing High Performance Centre. The outcome of that process is pending. If the Wairoa is selected then the canoe club’s required building size is expected to double, but the cost will be paid for by the government. Club member Terry Newlands told councillors the NZ Olympic Canoe squad has visited and trained on the river for four days since the January meeting. The CEO and board members of Canoe New Zealand have also looked at it. “It’s still in the mix as far as we know,” says Terry. The canoe club focusses on flat water sprinting as opposed to slalom kayaking. The club formed in 2006 and was on the river with no base for six months before renting storage from Eastern Bay Rowing Club on the west bank. As the rowing club grew, the canoe club was squeezed out. It moved to Memorial Park and paddled on Tauranga Harbour before returning to the Wairoa in 2009, where it is still leasing containers at Waimarino for storage. Waimarino is also growing and this time when the canoe club moves it wants to be into its own space. Council planners have tacked the canoe club proposal onto Parau Farms where, with the neighbouring Bethlehem College, there is a possibility of growing a watersports hub. The city council approved the recommendation, and also resolved to engage with Bethlehem College to look at road access down by the riverside where the council land adjoins the college. Construction of the Parau Farms playing fields is expected to begin 2015/16.

When we turn worship into a song rather than a song into worship, we reduce worship from being the totality of one’s life lived before God. Notwithstanding that there is something powerful about lyric and melody, it is essential that we make space for people to connect with God in a variety of means. In our Sunday gatherings we try to mix things up. Sometimes we use set prayers, other times interactive stations with reflection questions or art installations. These are designed to create an opportunity to reflect and to point you towards God. Two out of three Sundays we sing together.
