Garage sales are a well-known New Zealand tradition in which the thrifty among us trawl through a stranger’s unwanted ‘treasures’. Deirdre Walker, of Arataki, was beset by heaps of those people on a recent Saturday after advertising her garage sale in The Weekend Sun. In about five hours on a cold morning, Deirdre turned costume jewellery, plates, clothes, linen, ornaments, tools and bits and pieces into $185. “We didn’t do too badly out of it in the end,” she says. “We are very happy with it. We put the signs up early and some people came because of the signs and the rest because of the advert they read in The Weekend Sun. Deirdre paid just $19 for the listing in The Weekend Sun, which is delivered to more than 63,430 readers every weekend. Church puts lessons to practical use Otumoetai Church of Christ parishioners are going out into the community on Sunday, July 1, to serve in whatever way they can. This is the third year the church has taken its normal worship time on a few select Sunday mornings to go into the community for what they call ‘Go
Sunday’. Andrew Gearhart, a minister at the church and organiser of Go Sunday, says it is a time for the church to serve as Jesus did. It is important for members to serve the community rather than simply sitting in a building talking about it, says Andrew. The church is making a list of projects for Go Sunday and Andrew says there are a number of spots still open. In the past, the church has completed 10 to
15 projects, such as cleaning up rubbish, baking for neighbours, gardening and singing in rest homes. Go Sunday is a church-wide event in which every member participates. “I’m proud to be a part of a church that has something like this that they do. “Everyone leaves feeling motivated, built-up, encouraged and challenged.” By Savannah Lee

Paul prays in Ephesians 1:17-21 to “the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, that He may grant you a spirit of wisdom and revelation (of insight into mysteries and secrets) in the (deep and intimate) knowledge of Him, by having the eyes of your heart flooded with light, so that you can know and understand the hope to which He has called you, and how rich is His glorious inheritance in the saints, and (so that you can know and understand) what is the immeasurable and unlimited and surpassing greatness of His power in and for us who believe, as demonstrated in the working of His mighty strength, which He exerted in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His (own) right hand in the heavenly (places), far above all rule and authority and power and dominion and every name that is named (above every title that can
be conferred), not only in this age and in this world, but also in the age and the world which are to come.” In the midst of these amazing statements about knowing and understanding by insight and revelation about who we are in God and who God is in us, Paul speaks about “the immeasurable and unlimited and surpassing greatness of His power in and for us who believe” which Paul goes on to say is the same power that raised Jesus from the dead. Can you comprehend that, brothers and sisters in Christ? The same
power that raised Jesus from the dead is both in us and is at work for us! Paul speaks again of this again in Ephesians 3:20: “Now to Him Who, by the (action of His) power that is at work within us, is able to (carry out His purpose and) do superabundantly, far over and above all that we (dare) ask or think (infinitely beyond our highest prayers, desires, thoughts, hopes, or dreams).” Visit us at http://www. jesusfirst.org.nz or see you at Jesus First on Sunday.
