Tauranga social housing boost Tauranga’s social housing stocks are set to be boosted following a Government announcement of plans to invest $25.3 million across the country. The bulk of the funds are going into social housing projects in Auckland, but Tauranga will get five new twothree bedroom homes within the next 18 months from Accessible Properties NZ Ltd – the organisation that manages IHC’s 1100 properties across the country. Accessible Properties has been allocated $8.25m for 60 new houses throughout the country for people with intellectual disabilities. The houses will be built in South Auckland (15), West Auckland (12), Hamilton (10), North Shore (7), Wellington (7), Christchurch (4) and Tauranga (5). General manager Andrew Wilson says the areas had been identified following a survey of the members of the disa-
bled community that established it was increasingly difficult for them to find affordable accommodation in major centres. Andrew says the sites for the Tauranga houses are still being finalised, and – along with all of its developments – is determined tenants will be in by January 2014. He says the houses are being designed specifically for people with intellectual disabilities as single storey properties and designed with large manoeuvring spaces, door-way widths and hall-ways. “We are also making sure these homes are located in areas close to shopping centres, medical centres and areas where they are less likely to be discriminated against.” Housing Minister Phil Heatley says over time social housing will complement state housing by providing a pathway to greater housing independence and, in some cases, home ownership.

Honouring the seniors in our community There are now more seniors in our community than there are teenagers. The United States census bureau projects that by 2018 there will be more older adults than children on the planet. This fact is already having a profound ripple effect on the economies of Western nations
and their superannuation schemes. Economists now argue the burden of superannuation will place an intolerable tax load on a shrinking work force and that the age of entitlement has to be raised. This leaves many seniors feeling unwanted, undervalued and a burden. Next we will see fresh arguments for euthanasia. However, seniors are healthier and more enthusiastic about life than ever before, and are an untapped and unrecognised resource in our community. They come from the ‘builder’ generation. They are the ones who sacrificed to build our nation. Now they are living longer, they still want to make a contribution to our community and leave a legacy that will outlast them. When I visit in the community and I meet a senior I ask these questions: Do you have any connection with any Christian group? Most often they no
longer have any close contact with a church. Did you go to Sunday school or Bible class when you were young? It is highly likely they did. A majority of seniors went to Sunday school. Then I ask, “Did it do you any harm?” This may seem a strange question but allows them to tell me of their past experiences. Finally my last question is. Do you know why people your age don’t go to church? Often, the answer is: “Because no-one invited me.” This is why at St. Enoch’s we are holding a Celebrate Seniors Sunday, which gives us a special opportunity to celebrate all seniors mean to God and invite neighbours along. Celebrate Seniors Sunday I am excited to tell you about the Celebrate Seniors Sunday on June 17 at 9.30am at St. Enoch’s Presbyterian Church. At St. Enoch’s we honour age. We are thankful we have older people in our congregation. We know the depth of experience and insight they bring. To show our support and concern for the seniors in our community we are holding a Celebrate Seniors Sunday. This will be a special service focusing on what it means to be blessed by God
with old age. It will be a celebration of age, including testimonies, humour and wisdom from the Bible. We will sing songs and hymns which will be very familiar to seniors. The service will include items that will touch your heart and fill you with a sense of awe and nostalgia. There will be humour that should bring a smile to your face. St Enoch’s are a friendly bunch of people and the service will be followed by a special morning tea. Please come.
Is unconditional love possible? I hear so many people saying “I fell in love” or “I was in love, and now I’m not” statements based on disposable feelings. But the reality is, real love, unconditional love is a commitment based on a decision. Unconditional or no
strings love isn’t based on the other person’s performance or behaviour, you love the person not their actions, actions that you may dislike or even detest. That’s why marriage is a covenant relationship based on trust, not a contract based
on mistrust that says I love you if you do this for me, or I love you because of the benefits, and if you don’t deliver I’m out of here. If there are strings attached, it isn’t real love. My family may disappoint me, and I may not always like their behaviour but my love for them is unconditional, a separate issue. As followers of the Way, the Truth and the Life our Messiah who shows us unconditional love and unconditional forgiveness in spite of our behaviour.
