The power of thanksgiving Psalm 100 is called a “Psalm for thanksgiving and for the thank offering”. In verse 4, God's people are called to enter His gates, the doorway into His presence, with thanksgiving; and to enter His courts with praise, to give thanks and to bless His holy name. Elsewhere in the Psalms, we read about the sacrifice of thanksgiving – that which is our offering of thanksgiving to God. The psalmist in Psalm 147:7 speaks about singing to the Lord with thanksgiving. This principle of offering up our declarations of thanksgiving to God is continued in specific detail in the New Testament. Paul says in Philippians 4:6: “Do not be anxious about anything” and then he instructs us what to do instead. He says: “But in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God”. Colossians 2:7 & 8 speak to us as those who have received Christ to “walk in Him, rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving”. So, our thanksgiving is not to be given to God begrudgingly – instead, we are to be “abounding in thanksgiving”. We read an astounding truth in
1 Thessalonians 5:18 where Paul instructs us to “give thanks in all circumstances”. Not just in the good times, not just when life seems to be going well, not just when circumstances appear positive, but in all circumstances. That is, give thanks when the battle is most intense, when it seems that everything is against you, when you are struggling to keep your head above water. If that isn't significant enough, Paul adds: “For this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you”. Friends, it is so easy to grumble and murmur and complain; and to focus on the battle and to have a pity party. A whole generation perished in the wilderness because of their murmuring against God and because of their disobedience. God's Word says to you and to me: “Enter His gates with thanksgiving in your heart, bring a sacrifice of thanksgiving to the Lord and sing to the Lord with thanksgiving in your heart”. We are exhorted to pray with thanksgiving and to be abounding in thanksgiving. In all situations, give thanks to the God who redeemed you by the blood of His own Son, who called you out of darkness into His glorious light, who now calls you His son or His daughter – “for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you”.

It is designed to save us from ourselves (from big feet in mouth), and from the courts. Now we real estate agents like tennis and squash courts, court shoes, even gentle people at HRH courts ... but we shy away from legal courts. Sadly for us it is not acceptable to say we “didn’t know” or that “the information given to us by a buyer/ seller has great big holes in it”, from conscious or unconscious data deletion, amendment or addition.
We are the new three wise monkeys. ‘See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil’ is no use to us. We must seek out all faults even those you don’t know of and see evil, hear evil and speak evil under the rules of full disclosure. We are ably aided in this, sometimes awful, task by the council, building inspectors and lawyers.
Potential issues
Now don’t crack open the bubbly while the ink dries on the contract ... that is just step one guys. Leaky homes and building materials, of potential issue, have changed the perimeters of inspections. A pass is getting harder to gain. Even our standard sale and purchase offer document carries a requirement for a building inspection. These inspections may be as scary as a visit to the dentist. Lurking unseen, unless by x-ray or invasive testing (ouch), may lie defects.
Dodging fault
The language of building inspection reports is by necessity full of possible future scenarios and potential failings. Why? Because the council and the building industry have big bills, and so everyone wants to dodge future fault. (Including me!) So don’t be surprised to find a scary bedtime read – and in some cases – a horror story. The trick is to interpret and understand either remedial or preventive action. It was a cool start for about 100 keen swimmers who braved the chilly ocean at Omanu to honour Mount Maunganui College student Jed Roberts on Wednesday. The 17-year-old passed away in 2011 following a 19 month battle with leukaemia.
