All drivers will come under close scrutiny in the upcoming Bay of Plenty Police three-month summer campaign which kicks off in mid-October. Western Bay of Plenty Police traffic senior sergeant Ian Campion says ‘Operation Profile’ will be focusing on both urban and rural areas in its campaign against drink and drug-driving. “We will be targeting both urban and rural, and reminding drivers that if they drink and drive – no matter where they are – they have a chance of being caught.” Ian says drink-driving continues to be more of a problem on rural roads largely because drivers do not expect to be caught. He says the greater problem in rural areas was confirmed by a recent drinkdriving blitz in rural roads around Katikati where 12 drivers were found to be over the breath alcohol limit – “a higher rate for the small township than in urban areas”. Ian says while it is generally socially unacceptable to drink and drive, there was still a culture of drink-driving in some rural areas which they wanted to tackle. “We are not going to say that we are going to be in Katikati on Wednesdays and Te Puke on Thursdays - but we will be out in rural areas.” He says drink-driving on rural roads – with the higher speed limits – leads to more accidents and “greater road trauma”. “My hope is that will send a clear message to rural drink-drivers, that they can expect to be breath tested anytime, anywhere.” By Hamish Carter

Brand new Kia’s no pest Kia Sportage Urban EX
Here’s the deal. I was hoping to pick up the new 2.4L Kia Sportage from Tauranga Motor Company after covering the Carrus Tauranga Open last Friday afternoon. But that version wasn’t available, so instead I was presented with the 2.0L version. The quick poke I had inside the 2.4L confirmed to me what I’d be missing – leather everywhere, keyless ignition and a 2359cc Theta II 2.4 D-CVVT Gasoline engine under the hood capable of producing 6000rpm. Still, the top-selling Urban 2.0L Petrol 4x2 auto did a pretty good imitation as I rolled out of the dealership and onto 3rd Ave. Trialling the slightly more modest version meant the leather was swapped for comfortable cloth, the keyless ignition replaced by the traditional variety and the engine exchanged for its 2.0L equivalent. Still, it roared down the side streets with me encased in great comfort until I returned to the office to spend a few hours slogging through stories while the Sportage waited outside. Finally, at about 5.30pm, the bell rang. I ran from the building and into the Kia, before doing a clichéd lap of The Strand and cruising over the bridge to the Mount beach. It was the first of many scenes the Kia blended seamlessly into over the next day. The following morning at the Carrus Tauranga Open, eventually won by Mark Brown after a sparkling 62 on Sunday, the new model was one of at least three SUV Kia vehicles at the Tauranga Golf Club. Centre, so shares the sporty low profile roof, flared guards and sculpted door panels that are unmistakably Kia. It comes with all the bells and whistles one would expect from a modern-day SUV, including reversing camera, simple MP3 and Bluetooth connectivity, six speakers for surround sound and trip computers – all accessible through the fully adjustable steering wheel. The whole gambit of safety features basically comes standard across all the models, with everything from ABS brakes to dual front and rear airbags making this an exceptionally safe ride for the family. The electronic stability feature, seatbelt pretensioners and reverse warning sensors add another layer of safety while allowing for a smooth and reliable ride. The engine’s low-weight aluminium construction contributes to frugal fuel consumption of 8.7L/100km – remarkable considering how substantial it feels as you sit high above the road with a great view of surrounding traffic. The horizontal dashboard layout creates a feeling of space, ensuring the large cabin feels more like a sporty sedan than a 4x2. The Spotrage is essentially a town car in 4x2 clothing, perfect for families, business, farmers and those who enjoy the great outdoors. Without a family, business or farm, I opted for one of the next best thing and took my fiancé Nicole and flatmates Dale and Daniel out for ice cream. The boys, at a combined 210kg and 12ft tall, easily slipped into the back seats of the spacious cabin. I strapped them in and headed towards the Welcome Bay shops. They moaned a little and squirmed; incessantly asking how long it would take and how many scoops they could get, but the Sportage’s impressive sound system more than compensated for that. Reminded why I don’t have children, I dropped off the ‘kids’ and took Nicole for a leisurely drive which was much more fun. The automatic 2.0L I drove retails at $38,240, so it’s not surprising it’s the version that sells most frequently, while for real value for money the entry 2.0L Sportage LX auto is priced at $34,240. But the extra comfort and bells and whistles of the up-market versions also make them well worth considering. Retailing up to $52,240 in the case of the top diesel model, the top-of-the-line versions include an AWD feature that thrives on sand, snow and other low-traction surfaces by distributing the driving force to front and rear wheels automatically. Some would have called it a wreck, but for Colin the ‘34 Ford V8 Coupe was a thing of beauty. It was just that it needed a little
tender-loving care after being rolled in an accident. For vintage car enthusiast and “tinkerer” Colin it was the beginning of a life-long love, which has seen him searching high and low for all sorts of rare car parts to finish work on the precious cars. As co-organiser of next Sunday’s Tauranga Vintage Car Club ‘Swap Meet and Market’ he is hoping the event will make it easier for car-lovers to find what they want. Colin, who unashamedly declares himself a Ford man - he’s got a 1939 Ford Deluxe Coupe “which is still in good nick and goes well” - can still clearly describe visiting the Ford assembly plant in Seaview, Lower Hutt, as a schoolboy in 1952. He remembers the bustling factory, where the workers assembled the cars from crates of Canadian parts with locally-made upholstery, electrics and other final touches. “It was like a big kitset,” says Colin. Within four years the family had shifted from Eastbourne to Tauranga, with Colin’s unfinished coupe in tow. “I never got the job finished. I had had it sitting in the

garage for a few years while I worked away on it. But it was too big a job and I just ended up selling it.” Ironically, in his search to find parts to finish the car he had unearthed a front door for the coupe he was looking for among the treasure stored in an attic above Tauranga Ford dealers EW Tappenden and Sons. “There were all sorts of things stored up there. You never knew what you were going to find.” Despite not finishing this first project it did not deter Colin from working on the series of cars he has had over the years. Next weekend Colin is hoping car-lovers of all persuasions will be able to find some of the parts they have been searching for at the Bay of Plenty Vintage Car Club’s annual swap-meet and market. “It’s definitely the place to go if you are looking for a part. We also have the parts shed at the clubrooms with all sorts of parts members don’t need, from engines to body parts.” The swap meet is being held in conjunction with a display of 20 vintage cars at the Cliff Rd clubrooms on October 14 (market starts 8am).
