More than 30 years ago, John McTavish became a diehard Alfa Romeo fan after being introduced to the Italian auto brand by a car-mad friend. These days his passion for Alfa’s is as strong as ever with three cars in his shed. And, along with other Bay of Plenty members of the Alfa Romeo Owners Club, he’s helping organise a track day to put the cars through their paces in Taupo next month. “The more I leaned, the more I became interested. It was the engineering – at the time they were pretty advanced with twin cam and twin spark. Everyone else has since caught up, but at the time it was pretty exotic,” recalls John about the initial appeal that saw him switch from being a Ford fan. “You had fairly ordinary saloon cars really kitted out like racing cars – and they were always nicely designed. They were pretty cars.”
John still recalls the excitement of getting his first Alfa in the early 1980s – a 1979 Giulietta with its powerful revving sound. “I was using it to travel between Hamilton and Galatea and there were some really nice deserted straight roads and it was really nice to just wind it out. I must have got it well over 100 miles per hour – 110-120 – but I shouldn’t really admit to that.” John has since replaced the Giullieta for a 1988 Alfa Romeo 75 3 litre model – which he got in the mid-1990s – which he describes

as “quite a little road rocket in their day”. Around the year 2000, he added a 1983 GTV and a 164 saloon car – which he uses as his main car - to his collection, reserving the GTV and 75 as “track or club event cars”. He regularly races his cars at club events – but plays down his talent on the track, describing himself as “never any good – too tentative really”. The first time he took a car out on the track he remembers being a bundle of nerves. “You start worrying about your car when
you are revving it hard out and braking hard. Maybe it wears off for others but not for me.” More than five years after the Alfa club’s annual March Mania track event in Taupo fell by the wayside, the group of Bay of Plenty members are starting a new non-competitive event on August 24 to attract both seasoned and new track drivers. “Having the event competitive puts too much pressure on beginner drivers. But our idea is to attract people who have never been on track before – and perhaps have never thought about it.” The field will be restricted to 60 cars with priority given to Alfas and other Italian cars. I have to admit it was a long time since my last outing in a Mazda. If memory serves me correctly, it was one my best friend’s dad’s RX 7 we had ‘liberated’ for a jaunt almost 20 years ago. Speed, style, sleek and sporty – we thought we were the sharpest lads around and were scratching our heads why all those young ladies didn’t quite see it too! Cody aiming for Germany Top international motocross rider Cody Cooper laid a serious claim to a place in the New Zealand team heading to Motocross of Nations in September. On a break from riding in the Australian Motocross Championships, Mount Maunganui-based Cody threw down a challenge to other riders with his top performance at the annual Battle of the Clubs event in Taupo on Saturday. While Cody’s Tauranga Motorcycle Club finished the event ranked fifth out of 21 clubs entered, his stellar riding saw him unbeaten – comfortably fending off attacks from Taupo’s former national champion Ben Townley and Rotorua’s former national champion Michael Phillips. Cody, the reigning national MX1 champ won both the combined MX1 and Veterans’ class race, and the combined MX1 and MX2 race as well. Based on his continuing top performance, he is a firm favourite to be picked in a three-rider New Zealand team to compete at the Motocross of Nations in Germany in September and he is excited about the prospect. “I hope I do get picked for the Motocross of Nations squad. I have raced at that German track before, although it was a Grand Prix event when I was about 17, so that’s a long time ago.” Meanwhile, after winning his last round at the Australian series he hopes to build on his current fourth overall ranking – firmly believing momentum is now on his side.
Great results for drifting duo Tauranga drifting couple Drew Donovan and Jodie Velhurst finished the extended drifting season well at the recent finale in Taupo; and are already turning their attention to next season. Jodie concluded her season with her third podium finishing ranked third in the D1NZ Pro-Am series. Drew – who also finished in third place in Christchurch – bet fellow Tauranga driver Cole Armstrong in a battle for top eight, before being knocked out in a tight contest with series leader ‘Fanga Dan’. The result saw Drew finish eighth overall in the series. Drew says they are both very happy with their results and he is already excited about next season – which will kick off in October. Jodie will be stepping up to the pro class next season.

Falcon hunting
With the last Falcons set to roll off Ford’s Melbourne factory floor in three years, it is a good time to get a piece of motoring history. New crown for diamond A change in ownership at Bay City Mitsubishi dealership should go unnoticed by customers, says new dealer principal Aaron Chatfield.
Aaron, a passionate Mitsubishi fan admits to owning quite a number of the Diamondbadged cars in his 11 years at the dealership. “I absolutely love the product. It’s an amazing brand and we’ve got some great new models coming out.” Aaron says providing great customer service on the lot, and in the workshop, continues to be the company’s top focus. “We are in an environment where it is very much customer-driven. So, focussing on looking after the customers’ needs is critical. I don’t profess to us getting it right all the time, but we certainly try our best.”
As sales manager for the last six years, Aaron has been a key part of the dealership’s success, leading the sales team which has helped the firm win Mitsubishi’s highest award – the Diamond Dealer trophy - in five of the last eight years. The award is given for sales success and overall top performance in dealership operations. “It’s always been an aspiration of mine own to have my own dealership – and the pinnacle is a franchised dealership, so I’m very excited,” says Aaron. Prior to his sales management role, Aaron had worked on the business side of things, organising sales documentation and finance, while he held various roles for more than 11 years at a Ford dealership in Auckland before shifting to Tauranga. The ownership change took effect in June.

After 32 days on the road in ‘Denise’, a 1500cc 1958 Morris Oxford, the pair drove into Paris on Saturday completing the 12,247 km rally they began planning over coffee at Gusto Café early last year. Corgi, who is based out of the Western Bay during the week, told Bay Driver he and Mount Maunganui builder and entrepreneur Steve, were delighted at finishing 17th out of the field of 54 classic cars (1941-1974) – and as one of only two cars in their class to earn a gold medal. He rated their placing as “terrific” considering the Oxford was one of the cars in the most original manufactured state – and had one of the smallest capacity engines. “Other cars that purported to be in the rally with small capacity engines, were actually modified to a larger cc rating but still remained in our class.” Corgi says many of their competitors
thought they were a joke, “and that we had no show of making it to the end, so it was satisfying to prove them wrong”. While having too many memorable moments to note, Corgi says the experience of dealing with a shattered windscreen – which immediately exposed them to a “merciless attack” by giant mosquitoes – was definitely an interesting experience. “We donned our goggles and got out of there fast.” They had not ruled out doing another endurance rally, but Corgi says after the torture Denise has endured they would need to find another car. Corgi thanked everyone for their support and messages of encouragement during the rally, saying it was a good boost, and also thanked Steve and his helpers for meticulously preparing the car. “This paid off so well. While other cars fell out of the competition the reasons for their failures were obvious.” Corgi also praised the organisers for all their work including bringing food and hot showers to the middle of the Mongolian desert, saying the rally had been a “fabulous expedition and experience” which he recommended to others. Daybreaker Rally delight A top performance by Tauranga driver Phil Campbell at Manawatu’s Daybreaker Rally has seen him reclaim the national 2WD championship series lead. The see-saw battle with Christchurch’s Josh Marston swung back to Phil on Saturday, winning the third round by 18 seconds. The drivers haves been taking turns winning in the three rallies this season. Phil and co-driver Venita Fabbro’s 30-points, earned in the latest round, took their series total to 105. This is seven points ahead of Josh – in what Phil describes as a “great outcome”. “It went really well. We knew we would need to start well in the first stage and we did just that.” But after taking the early lead, it was not all
plain sailing for the team, with a stray rock on stage four threatening to cripple the Letts Construction Ford Fiesta R2. Phil says it was another “great battle with Josh”. He expects more tight contests in the remaining three rounds but is determined to win - including the next round in Canterbury where Josh has hometown advantage. Fellow Tauranga driver Dave Holder finished third in the 2WD rally championships series, earning 19 points (behind Josh’s 21); and winning two of the round’s tight twisting stages. Meanwhile, former 2WD national champion for 2011, Ben Hunt, hit the big time winning his first national rally in his Subaru WRX STI in the main series. Phil next turns his attention to the Tauranga Clubmans Rally on July 20. The round continues in Canterbury on August 11. Details: www.nzrallychampionship.co.nz
