Paddon, who is currently competing in the FIA Super 2000 World Rally Championship, selected the Mt Maunganui-based Holder after being impressed by the young driver’s speed and commitment. Hayden says he had been fortunate to receive help from many people who helped his team get to where it is today.

“We still have a long way to go in world rallying and are fully focused on that, but I also enjoy helping where I can and hope to continue to help the growth of New Zealand rallying,” says Hayden. “We believe that David has huge potential to do well in the sport, with the World Rally Championship within his reach. While we are not in a position to help financially, we will help by giving advice and passing on the things that we have learnt, from driving training, promotion, media and other aspects away from competition that will help fast-forward his learning and experience. Continued ... works as an engineer for local firm Monit Rally Computers. He is currently competing in the New Zealand Rally Championship, (NZRC), in a 1600cc two-wheel-drive (2WD) Toyota Levin, and leads both the rookie and open 2WD categories going into round four, next week’s Brother Rally New Zealand. Counting this year’s three NZRC events, David has competed in just nine rallies in his career thus far. This limited experience hasn’t slowed his progress and he has been the pace-setting 2WD driver at several events, surprising many with his ability to learn and adapt quickly. “I’m stoked to be chosen by Hayden. I’m really excited to get this opportunity and very humbled that he has chosen me,” says David. “Having Hayden’s support is definitely going to be a huge help and being able to draw on his vast experience and advice will, without doubt, be beneficial in ensuring I reach the top level in rallying. I’m extremely grateful and look forward to working with him to learn more.” David’s plans for the future are lofty – he aims to be competing in the FIA WRC Academy within two years and his long

term goal is to win the main WRC drivers’ championship. The 2WD academy is one of the feeder series to the main World Rally Championship and is focused on drivers under 25 years of age. The winner’s prize is a fully paid drive in the higher level SWRC for the following year. “I’d love to be competing in the academy next year,” says David. “But realistically we need to look at the budget, and another year in the NZRC would be beneficial in terms of experience, building our profile and commercial partnerships. “We’ll look at upgrading our car to run a Ford Fiesta in the Fiesta Sporting Trophy section of the NZRC for2013, then at making it to the academy in 2014, and beyond.” Next week, both David and Hayden will contest the Brother Rally New Zealand, running 21 -24 June. While Hayden competes in the main event, David, with his older brother James as co-driver, tackles exactly the same rally route as part of the Possum Bourne Memorial Rally field for drivers with vehicles that are not FIA-homologated. Welcome to the 9th generation New 2012 Honda Civic

The new 9th generation Honda Civic is full of promise. But promises are like babies, fun to make and sometimes hard to deliver. She is a bit like a Ponsonby blonde – good looks, smooth moves and a quick pick up. Actually, maybe that’s an unfair comparison. The Civic definitely won’t be taxing your wallet like the aforementioned latte lass. An Eco option reduces the revs, trims take off, and generally makes little adjustments on your behalf to save fuel. Our introduction was like an on-line date rather than a casual café encounter and like blondes I was impressed early on. Her five-door body is substantial. Her form is more conservative than curvaceous but she’ll definitely turn heads. Doors open and shut with the clunk of quality and the finishing is top notch, especially the leather interior. The rear seating has a generous amount of leg space for even my 6ft frame. Her 2.0 litre performance is pleasing, responsive and agile. I would have liked to compare to the 1.8L model as these days there is little noticeable difference between the cc ratings. The Civic is also available as a hybrid IMA. When you do push her, there is barely a noise emanating from under the bonnet. If you couldn’t see the well-appointed display you wouldn’t really know you were breaking the speed limit. The engine is remarkably quiet, until you thrust your foot down and then the engine growls like an angry cat. The 17 inch alloys leak a little noise into the cabin, but quieter tyres are always an option if it bothers. The large buttons on the stereo

and steering wheel controls easily disguise any unappreciated external audio. The expansive LCD display is great. You barely move your eyes to take in the display. You’d be forgiven for thinking you were a pilot of a private jet. One cool effect is the change in colours from blue to green. Keeping the display on green means you are driving conservatively. The display looks like eye candy with useful driver information presented in your format of choice including speed, distance travelled, fuel potential, temperature and more. You can even upload your own back-drop wall paper to personalise the screen. Honda has always produced a nice car. Ever since driving a four-wheel-steer Prelude in the late-1980s over the chicanes between Hamilton and Raglan I’ve been a fan. Honda is a genuinely innovative marque. Instrument appointment is excellent on this model. Like her predecessors, every button and whistle on the new Civic is within thumbs reach or pointing distance. The steering wheel boasts cruise control settings, stereo tuning and volume control, bluetooth phone connectivity, options for the heads up display, manual gear change paddles and more selections than the average Wurlitzer. In the arm rest is a USB cable to charge whatever device you’ve just acquired and

below the dash are two lighter-type outlets. The new Civic is a sensible and somewhat sporty car. Slightly sexy, but really just a robust sedan dressed in designer duds. A fuel stop was required. We covered

183km for just over 10ltrs, not too shabby thinks I. Driving through the Bay of Plenty is like driving through a mine field. The Civic is definitely at home with the constant obstacles of city development. At any turn there is a lane closed, the motorway is poorly sign-posted and swerves and sudden turns are the norm. This baby handles like Diego Maradona on steroids. Sudden stops, unexpected swerves and detours are conquered like a Fifa final. This

baby can turn on a dime. Something to watch with lane changes or Aucklandesque re-routing is the rear blind spot, but a conscious effort to turn your head and the large wing mirrors go some way to overcoming this quirk, common to most modern designs. The Civic lines are divine and the handling superb. Her finish is polished and all things considered she is a lovely car. Does she live up to the hype? I’d have to say this baby delivers. British premium car brand MINI is rolling out the red carpet for the Olympians and Paralympians this year with a new edition of the iconic little car. A total of 302 medals for the Olympic Games and 503 for the Paralympic Games will be up for grabs between July and early-September, but the Games are about more than outstanding sporting achievement alone.
