Cody’s MX update A successful motocross season is continuing for Mount Maunganui rider Cody Cooper with another first place win at races in Conandale, Queensland in the Australian Motocross Championships last weekend.

The first placing, along with an eighth place in another race, earned Cody second place overall for the sixth round of the series – and fourth in the chase for the open title with 331 points. After six of the 10 rounds in the series, Cody hopes a podium finish for the series is well within his grasp – with third-ranked Billy MacKenzie just ahead of him on 340 points, then Matt Moss (372) behind leader Todd Waters (376). Fellow Western Bay rider Rhys Carter managed fifth overall on the day in the MX2 series – lifting him from 12th to 10th overall in standings, while Logan Blackburn is ranked ninth overall in the MX Development Class.

Racing in dad’s tracks

After proving himself on the North Island hillclimb circuit last year, where he won two 2WD rounds, Mitch James was always going to be one to watch at the recent Motorsport Bay of Plenty Clubman’s Rally. It was only the second rally for the 22-yearold – after completing the Gisborne national championship rally last year – and with experienced co-driver Venita Fabbro at his side (she normally races with Phil Campbell) he got off to a reasonably good start in the Mamaku race. In the first stage they were 16th fastest, and improved on that to be 12th in the second leg. “This was obviously our home rally so we were keen to do quite well here but we ended up hitting a tractor tyre around the TECT [All terrain] Park and bent a steering arm.” “It was just a bit gutting after we were doing

so well – but that’s rallying,” says Mitch, who knows about the ups and downs from his accomplished rally-driving father Danny. Despite his frustration at his poor finish – which saw him finish 21st overall (he had been aiming for the top 10) – Mitch still picked up the prize for the fastest novice driver. Looking back to the race on the upper Pyes Pa forestry roads, Mitch says he came unstuck on the third stage through TECT park when he clipped a tractor tyre on the finish line. “Then we had to limp through the next two big stages before getting it back to service and sort it out before the last round.” Growing up Mitch got a taste for rallying from his dad, who he went for his first run with at about 12. It was the age when he also entered his first event – a grass autocross in Te Puke – which he remembers being “lots of fun”. “But I don’t think I was on the pace, I was only a young fella at it.”

Tauranga’s upcoming driver Mitch James got the rallying bug from his father Danny. At about 15 Mitch did his first hillclimb on Harrys Rd. And, after last year’s success in the hillclimb series, Mitch is determined to compete again in the upcoming season. “We are going to have another crack at that, but the thing is whether we stick with 2WDing or have a crack at 4WD. “At this stage we are quite keen to get a 4WD car. If we buy a 4WD I would be keen to have a go at the Possum Bourne Rally and obviously have a decent go at the New Zealand hillclimb champs at the end of the year.” Next year Mitch would like to compete in the Extreme rally series. Motocross in a maize paddock The gate is being opened on the maize paddock for a fun day’s moto-cross riding next Sunday. Tauranga Motorcycle Club president Kelvin Meredith is expecting up to 200 riders will take part in the family ride day, saying the event has been a popular winter tradition at the club for about 25 years. “It’s just a fun day. It’s doesn’t have any jumps, so it’s safe for all riders and it’s not competitive so everyone is out enjoying it.” Kelvin says the day is ideal for all riders, with a separate children’s track offering a good spot for new riders to learn, while the main track offers an interesting layout with chicanes and challenging corners. Riders will be split into different groups, based on experience, for 10 minute ‘motos’. The club day follows on from a similar event on July 7, when the temporary track had its first run after the maize harvest. “We had so much fun in July, we’re doing it again,” says Kelvin, who describes the Welcome Bay maize paddock as one of the best. The day is open to all riders at 751 Welcome Bay Rd (charges apply), with a briefing at 9.45am and riding 10am3.30pm. All riders must be in appropriate gear. Details: www.taurangamcc.co.nz Meanwhile, Kelvin says the club is applying for grants to fund development of tracks for motocross riding at TECT All Terrain Park, where earlier this year it signed a lease for 40 hectares of land. The club hopes to have work completed on the first tracks by Christmas to be opened for riding in January, says Kelvin. The tracks will be mainly used during spring/summer – because the upper Pyes Pa tracks get too wet during winter.

The suspension systems, designed for the Giulietta, just ask to be put to the test. The advanced McPherson front suspension is built using lightweight materials designed to ensure both crisp entry to bends and

maximum comfort. The new Multilink layout, adopted for the rear, offers great road-holding with the overall effect being an extremely conformable ride in all conditions. Bruce’s summary was that it had a neutral balance, not heavy in the front or light in the rear. Safety is assured in the Alfa Romeo Giulietta, being awarded the title of Europe’s safest compact car, as confirmed by a score of 87/100 in the 5-star rating awarded by EuroNCAP. A large boot with back seats that fold down flat gives the Giulietta plenty of options for carrying large items. The boot also contains an opening, where long items such as fishing rods can fit through from the boot and sit comfortably over the seat dividers. A distinctive Italian innovation is the boot being released, courtesy of the Alfa Romeo motif on the car’s rear. The Giulietta start from a recommended retail price of $36,990 for a manual Progression. The Giulietta Distinctive with QV Sportiva pack, which we test drove, is a luxury car at a very affordable price of $47,990 which embodies the essence of Alfa Romeo’s great racing heritage. We will leave the last word to Bruce. “In my mind, the Alfa DNA device is the key to the car’s appeal as it lets the sports car genie out of the bottle. It is a driver’s car – no question – and I was very reluctant to hand the car back.”

On track for inter-school comp

After a strong start to the series when Otumoetai College won the first event in April with a total of 393 points – just ahead of Whakatane’s Trident High School’s 390 – a run of accidents has seen it fall back. Team spokeswoman Juli Tolley says despite poor performance in the last two rounds – including the latest event at the Awakaponga track on July 21 where Otumoetai slipped from third to fourth-ranked school behind Tauranga Boys’ College – she is optimistic of the team’s

future prospects. “We’ve got a lot of new, talented, up-and-coming kids coming through, so the college’s future is looking strong. But with a few top riders out for the remaining season we’ve got a challenge ahead to keep in the top standings.” Juli says despite slipping in the standings there were some great individual performances, including by team captain Cameron McCaskie, who finished third overall in the senior open event in only his second time competing in the 17-34 age group class. She also singled out Evan Hawkless, who after starting poorly had a great second race placing second in the Junior Open. A top performance by the Tauranga Boys’ College has their team on 664 points, only 93 points behind second-placed Gisborne High School, but 258

Tony says without alterations to Pirini park, Tauranga does not have a track that would cope with the number of riders they were hoping for. He is waiting to hear back from schools about who will be taking part, in what he hopes will become an annual event.
