Boosted by the arrival of the new Sorento R full-size, seven seater SUV in November and on-going demand for the compact Sportage SUV, Kia increased its passenger vehicle sales in New Zealand by more than 22 per cent last year – reaching 2907 registrations. Sportage took out the title of most popular Kia model in 2012, with 790 registrations, making up 27 per cent of all Kia sales. Together, the Sportage and Sorento accounted for almost 40 per cent of Kia’s total sales for last year. Kia Motors New Zealand general manager Todd McDonald says there has been a growing trend for SUVs, particularly compact models like the Sportage, which he says are just as handy around city streets as they are in rural locations. “New Zealand drivers love the styling, versatility and high driving position of SUVs, which gives them a better view of the road

Parents asked to step up safety Parents and caregivers are being reminded to keep a sharp eye out for children aged under five on driveways and streets this summer. Plunket national child safety advisor Sue Campbell says summer often means more friends and family visiting, and therefore more vehicles. “Often amidst all the excitement of celebrating and spending time together there will be more cars coming and going, and more children and adults around. This all increases the risk of a driveway run over tragedy or a child wandering off.” Sue says a child is hospitalised with serious injuries received from a vehicle driving on a private driveway in New Zealand every two weeks. In more than 30 per cent of cases, the car was moving forward. “In the majority of cases the driver was known to the child, often a parent or relative, and the incident usually occurred on the driveway of the property where the child lived. “Most of these children are toddlers, aged one to two years of age, and when death does not occur, the injuries they receive are often severe, sometimes resulting in permanent disability. “It’s terribly sad and there is so much we can do to bring this number down.”

Massive New Year Plunket is warning parents and caregivers to be extra careful with driveway safety this summer.

Sue says it would be great to see families or groups taking time to ensure an adult is watching out for children at all times. She urges drivers to where possible, drive forwards out of the driveway, always check behind the vehicle before reversing, and to know where children are before starting a vehicle.

What you can do:

Check: Count the children before you manoeuvre, making sure they are belted safely in the car or in a safe place with an adult. Understand the blind area around your car – your line of sight may be less than you think. Keep cars locked and don’t let children use driveways as play areas. Supervise: Ensure a responsible person is actively supervising toddlers and young children. Late afternoon and early evening are particularly risky times, so special efforts are needed. Separate: Try to separate children from all areas used for driving, perhaps by installing a child-proof gate at doors or exits leading to driveways. Infants and toddlers should have safe, fenced play spaces. If you’re visiting someone’s house, park on the road instead of the driveway.

When ordinary just won’t cut it

The Toyota Hilux OUTLAW looks great with custom chrome accessories.

For nearly three years, the creative geniuses at Pacific Toyota in Tauranga have been taking the Toyota Hilux to another level with their custom accessorised, Limited Edition, four-wheel-drive ‘Outlaw’ branded utes. Now, they’re giving a similar treatment to the all-new Corolla and buyers from all over the country who like to own a car that stands out from the crowd are queuing up to buy. The Hilux Outlaw is exclusive to Pacific Toyota and was originally created by Sales Manager, Chris Churchward, in late 2010 after receiving many requests from buyers to ‘dress up’ their new Hilux SR5’s with alloy wheels, sports bars and so on. “It’s not easy to choose a set of accessories that enhance the look of the Hilux without going ‘over the top’, and then the customer has to arrange all the fitting and so on,” says Chris. “It seemed to me that the best option was to just create a customised Limited Edition package which we could brand and market to the public, and at the same time,

Hilux Outlaw (above) and Outlaw Extreme (right).

offer it at one value-added price.” And so, the Hilux Outlaw was born and around 50 have now been sold to happy customers throughout New Zealand. The added value exterior accessories on the Outlaw include chrome sports bar and nudge bar, hard lid, tuff deck, bug guard, custom decals, Outlaw badge and 18” custom alloy wheels. Inside, leather seats and a reversing camera are added to the already comprehensive array of features that come with all new Hiluxes. They are produced in limited numbers to protect the exclusivity of the brand and are available in both manual and auto.

Another level

Last year, the Outlaw brand was taken to another level with the creation of the Outlaw Xtreme brand. Designed to tempt the ‘extreme’ Hilux Outlaw fan, the Xtreme is produced with a distinctive and eyecatching “all black” appearance, with the bars, rear bumper, door handles and front grille all treated with a specially designed matt Black paint. In addition to the interior features outlined above, the Outlaw Xtreme Hilux also comes with sports-style leather seating emblazoned with the Outlaw Xtreme logo for an added touch of class. “One of the interesting things that has happened now,” adds Chris, “is that when customers come back to trade in their first Outlaw on a new one, the popular-

ity of this exclusive brand has grown to a level where the traded ute is usually sold again within days while the hits on Trade Me are always in the hundreds.”

Not so ordinary

To build on the success of the Outlaw brand, this year the Pacific Toyota team have customised two further vehicle models and re-branded them as a way of offering a point of difference to their customer base. The first is the Hilux SR4 … a manual four-wheel-drive ute that has been accessorised with alloys, side steps and custom decals. It falls between the entry level Hilux and the higher spec’d SR5 and is being successfully marketed to local business owners for $39,990 plus GST and on road costs. Owners who want a Hilux as a work ute are enjoying the higher range of features offered at a great value price. The second, and newest, special edition model is the Corolla GXR. In a similar approach to that taken when creating the Hilux SR4, it is a brand new 2013 Corolla GX hatch that has been fitted with 16”

The Corolla GXR (above) and Hilux SR4 (right) are custom-accessorised versions of popular Toyota models and are exclusive to Pacific Toyota.

The OUTLAW XTREME features badged leather sports seats. custom alloys, a Sat Nav system, Bluetooth phone (which is not standard on this model) and a reversing camera. Once again, the all-inclusive package is pitched to attract small business owners or sales professionals who want their cars to be more distinctive on the road, and is offered at $26,900 plus GST and on road costs. They look great with signwriting too! For more information about the range of exclusive vehicles at Pacific Toyota, Chris suggests that buyers phone one of the new car sales team to arrange a personal demonstration, which can be at the showroom on the corner of Elizabeth Street and Cameron Road in Tauranga, or at their business or home if required.

Never say never By Liz French

Tauranga real estate agent and well-known charity auctioneer, Frank Vosper, may have the ‘gift of the gab’ but he sometimes has to eat his words. In 2011 Frank was awarded the Queen’s Service Medal in recognition of many years offering his auctioneering services free to charities, schools, and community groups for fundraising events, notably the annual Police Charity Auction which broke the one million dollar barrier for total raised in 2010 and keeps going from strength to strength, the last one netting $260,000 for worthy causes. “My first car was a Morris Minor,” Frank recalls. “I bought it in 1969 as I needed transport from home outside Matamata to my first farming job near Morrinsville. I was being paid $13 a week back then. On a monthly salary of $52 it took a while to save the $300 to buy the car. It was a ‘kacky’ green.” Frank got his first speeding ticket in the ‘Morrie’. He was holidaying at Mount Maunganui, “a magnet for Waikato boys”, when he was called back urgently for hay making. “I left at 6.30am and was tearing back through Maungatapu Road (this was well before the Harbour Bridge was built) when a motor cycle cop caught

me exceeding the 50km limit and fined me $13, a lot of money on my wage. He wouldn’t listen to reason.” Frank was not mechanically minded or interested in cars other than as a means of transport, but he was sufficiently vain to understand that a turquoise car would not be the most effective in impressing girls, so he had the Morris Minor painted British racing green. Frank was also aware that there were cars you simply did not buy without risking ridicule, and mechanical trouble. “I would never have bought a Skoda, nicknamed ‘ice cream Skoda’. We used to joke that the heater in the rear windscreen was there to keep your hands warm while you pushed it,” he laughs. “Lada and Singer were other makes we would not touch with a barge pole in those days.” Ironically Frank now drives a Skoda Superb and admits it is exactly that. “It is the best car I have ever owned,” he enthuses. His car is now also a bit more than a means of transport. “It is my office and vital to my profession.” After two years as a satisfied Skoda owner Frank happily acknowledges: “You can never say never.”

Paws for thought – tips for pet travel When families head off on their summer holiday, pets often come too. The Motor Trade Association, in conjunction with the SPCA, is offering suggestions for making trips with pets as stress-free as possible – for all involved. MTA spokesperson Jayne Murray says it’s just as important to consider the safety and needs of pets on a long journey, as it is for children and other passengers. Simple steps for travelling with furry friends: • Secure your pets in a well-ventilated crate, carrier, or harness. • Make sure your pet stays within the vehicle at all times. • Prepare your pets for a long trip by taking them on series of short drives first. • Take your pets with you when you park. • Pet travelling kit – include plenty of water, food, toilet bags, grooming equipment, bedding, bowls, a leash, a familiar toy, and any medication your pet needs. • Plan ahead and consider your destination, does it have what your pet will need. If you have any concerns about travelling with pets, consult your vet or local SPCA for advice.

Gearing up for a weekend of drifting Tauranga couple Drew Donovan and Jodi Verhulst are gearing up to compete in round three of the D1NZ National Drifting Championships at Baypark Speedway this weekend. Drew (Mag & Turbo Warehouse Tauranga Nissan S15 V8) and Jodi, the country’s top female drifter (Mag & Turbo Warehouse Toyota Supra) say the exhilaration of sliding round corners at speeds of 140km/h has them addicted to the sport.

Taurang a Drew D drifters and Jodi onovan V are pro erhulst grassroo moting ts d with mo rifting n practice thly days through their Dr ift Motorsp ort NZ Compan y.

“Having the foot flat on the floor and smoke billowing out of the car, it’s addictive. The more you do it, the more you want to do it,” says Drew. They love the sport so much they want to share it with others, conducting grassroots drifting practice days through their Drift Motorsport NZ Company, after spotting a gap in the sport. “There was nothing local going on and we had to go to Taupo or Hampton Downs. “We wanted to get some practice in and wanted to get to where we are now. So we went out on a limb with a couple of mates and approached a race track and hired the venue.” They hold practice days at race tracks throughout the North Island once a month to promote the sport and offer a venue for up-and-coming drivers to keep off the roads. “We have 400 people on our books. I’ve seen it evolve and now there is no way near the same amount of guys on the road.” Drew began drifting in 2007, while Jodi followed suit in 2008 after watching Drew compete on the national circuit. The couple both admit the sport is addictive, but would not have it any other way. Check out Drew and Jodi’s skills on the Baypark Speedway track this Saturday and Sunday from 7am-7pm.

Racers take to the hills Tauranga driver Ben Thomasen (Subaru Impreza WRX) and current leader of the Motorsport New Zealand National Hillclimb Championships will be competing in round two in Waihi and Rotorua this weekend.

Motor racing enthusiasts will tear across the Bay of Plenty this weekend in round two of the Motorsport New Zealand National Hillclimb Championship. The championship, consisting of about 30 competitors, can be seen in Waihi and Rotorua during two days with competitors using the same car to compete on both the tarmac event on Golden Cross Rd, Waihi (Saturday) and the gravel stage on Manawahe Rd, Rotorua (Sunday). The North Island drivers will be hoping to maximise their points, before the series moves to the South Island for the final two rounds next month. Ben Thomasen in his Subaru Impreza WRX (150 points) heads into round two of the North Island section with a slender lead over Scott Jones (134 points) and Michael Tall (129 points), and says he is pretty happy following a clean sweep in the first round in Gisborne. “I want to try and finish up well this weekend before we head to Westport. But there will probably be a few local drivers who are not in the competition and might

be pretty fast. I will just try and not do anything silly.” Having been on the two tracks before, Ben is hopeful of two clean days of racing as he looks to push on and claim the championship. Motorsport Bay of Plenty executive member and championship competitor David Loughlin says the hillclimb competition has been running for three years in its current form and is one of the oldest types of motorsport racing in New Zealand. “It fell into a hole where no one did it for five years or so and it went into a lull, but I think we are growing again. We are not seeing as many of the hillclimb specials as we would like just yet.” The stages, roughly 5km in length up hill, sees each competitor permitted one practice run and three timed runs with the serious competitors changing the dimensions of their vehicles between the two races including suspension, tyres and transmission. David says the range of cars is pretty significant with rally cars, hillclimb specials and 500 horsepower Subaru’s right down to 2WD Toyota Starlets. “From a spectators point of view it’s pretty quick because the cars are coming through every minute.” By Luke Balvert

The call is going out for owners of special collectable cars to get involved in a new ‘Dream Machines’ car show at Bethlehem Town Centre in January. The new Rotary Club of Otumoetai event is on Saturday January 26 (Auckland Anniversary Day) with gold coin donations for entry going to buy Shelterbox kits for international humanitarian emergencies. Already cars have been confirmed for display from the Jaguar, Mercedes, BMW and Lexus clubs – but project convenor Terrence Crosby wants to hear from others with special cars to put on show. “Our aim is to get as many cars in the extra special Ferrari, Lamborghini, Aston Martin class on show. We want some cars that make the petrol-heads go wobbly at the knees.” The Shelterbox kits cost $1500 and include a domed tent, blankets, sleeping bags, a stove, water carriers and purification equipment, crockery and cutlery, cooking equipment and mosquito nets. For details on displaying your car, phone Terrence, 07 579 2347 or email The.Crosbys@xtra.co.nz

Preventing vehicle thefts this summer Residents are being reminded to lock their cars and be extra vigilant in not leaving valuable items visible in their cars. Western Bay of Plenty Police are warning motorists not to let their relaxed and carefree attitudes this summer become a temptation for others. Police have seen an increase in thefts from vehicles. Prevention manager inspector Scott Fraser says in the majority of cases it is small items left in cars attracting thieves, as they make easy pickings. This includes items such as wallets, phones, sunglasses, coins and navigation systems. “Our advice is simple; just remove the temptation. Lock up your vehicles and make sure that you take with you anything that might appeal to a thief. If you can’t carry it with you, at least make sure you stash it away from view.” The Bay of Plenty region attracts a large number of tourists who police say are particularly vulnerable. Scott says people in a holiday mood tend to neglect the basic safety precautions that they would take at home. They also tend to become more relaxed and less aware when driving rentals instead of their own vehicles.
