Statistics New Zealand says wholesale trade sales increased in March 2012 for a second consecutive quarter. Wholesale trade sales, after adjusting for seasonal effects, rose 2.4 percent ($496 million) in the March 2012 quarter. This follows a rise of 2.6 percent ($527 million) in the December 2011 quarter. “Most industries had higher sales. Motor vehicles and parts accounted for over a third of the overall increase,” industry and labour statistics manager Blair Cardno said. “This increase coincided with changes in the rules for emission standards for imported cars.” Motor vehicles and motor-vehicle parts wholesaling sales rose 13.1 percent ($193 million) from the December 2011 quarter. We’ve got a lot of new models coming onto the market this year and that has helped generate more interest too.” John Cross Managing Director of the Ultimate Motor Group says year on year total sales are up 15.7 percent. Total new car sales are 39748 at the end of May compared to 32832 at this time last year. Ford and Mazda sales are up 32 percent compared with last year. The only industry to have lower sales in the latest quarter was machinery and equipment wholesaling, with a 2.4 percent ($100 million) fall. The trend for total wholesale sales has generally been rising since mid-2009. The 1.8 litres engine produces 104kw and 174Nm of torque, while the 2.0Litre engine delivers 114Kw and 190Nm or torque. Importantly, this engine design increase brings increased torque to the important 2000-4000 rev range, where most driving occurs. This also contributes to improvements in fuel economy. Both engines are 2-stage i-VTEC with Drive by Wire electronic throttle control for better engine management.

Nothing boring in Swedish style Volvo XC60
There is an almost cultish loyalty among long time Volvo drivers to their beloved Swedish machines, but the XC60 promises to throw open the door on that cult, exposing it to a whole new market of impressed new vehicle owners. Perhaps the early appeal 20 years ago in driving a Volvo lay in their advanced (for the time) safety systems that were well ahead of the tin boxes the rest of us drove. It surely can’t have been for the practical but awfully boxy look that accompanied most early Volvos, particularly the station wagons. Today though you’ll get state of the art safety systems in cars worth $20,000 as the rest of the world caught up to Volvo – meanwhile Volvo has caught up and passed many marquees when it comes to putting out sexier, good looking vehicles that deliver in practicality as much as their new found looks. The XC60 makes a nice union between the more estate looking XC70 and the big brother XC90, keeping in mind its use will be more for practical everyday motoring, but delivering the visibility and driving position that has made larger SUVs so popular. The XC60 is no exception in the looks
department either. That fast growing “soft roader” niche is one Volvo have moved, met with a handsome machine that while having a very compact foot print actually serves five occupants very well. It comes packed with practical, user-friendly features that are not so much “nice to haves”, and more “why didn’t anyone else think of this?” features. Built into the rear seats are a couple of pop up booster seats that easily stow back into the cushion and can be activated even when your hands are full of wriggling kids and school bags etc. The centre rear console folds down with a handy map tray and cup holder, while anyone sitting in the middle can activate a pop up head rest that stows neatly out of the driver’s rear view when not being used. Even the rear seats offer more options than most, with a 40/20/40 split that provides lots of load carrying flexibility.
Roomy and smart
There is ample leg and head room, more than the compact profile would suggest, while the rear boot space is significant, with access simplified with another handy, and useful, touch in an electric opening-closing operation – excellent for when managing groceries, kids and tight spaces! But it is also the smart stuff you can’t see that really impresses with the XC60. This is the
first model to come with Volvo’s City Safety accident mitigation system – it is almost an auto pilot for accident avoidance. Sensors constantly monitor surrounding traffic motion, and should you come around the corner to face a vehicle where it should not be, the XC60’s system will clamp on the brakes to minimise, or even better, avoid the inevitable. It is the first vehicle in the world to be offered with this system, and sets the scene for future developments in auto control that help take the inevitable lag in human response out of the accident experience. The system operates at speeds between 5-30kph, detecting if vehicles 6-8 metres in front are moving in the same direction, or at a standstill. It is a long way from the original safety foundations that Volvo built its reputation on, but the safety spirit lives on, with the manufacturer aiming to have no-one killed in a Volvo by 2020, a noble and (with this sort of technology) attainable goal. The driving position is well sorted, with plenty of adjustment through the leather electric seats and multi-positioned steering wheel. In typical Swedish style the dash layout is simple and understated, with nice integration of the leather finish in the seats and W
the cabin fabrics giving a sense of a stylish, modern Scandinavian look that is fresh, modern and light.
Comfort
Seats have had input from orthopaedic surgeons, and deliver a very comfortable, supportive feel, regardless of road conditions and corners. Get the XC60 out on the open road and you will soon find that there is no Swedish reserve about its performance. The turbo charged engine is matched well to the six speed transmission, and is backed up by the security of an AWD system and multiple roll over control devices and software. The XC60 defies anyone to claim Volvo is a boring, distant marquee – when other European brands like Saab have fallen away, Volvo has evolved to produce good looking practical vehicles that nevertheless continue to hold true to the brand’s aim to produce the safest vehicles on the planet – and ensure safe most definitely does not mean boring. BMW success Thrilling duels, excitement right down to the final lap and another podium for BMW: the fourth DTM race of the year was a thriller. Martin Tomczyk (DE) of BMW Team RMG crossed the line in Spielberg (AT) in second place. Driving the BMW M Performance Parts M3 DTM, the German finished just a second behind Audi driver Edoardo Mortara (IT), who achieved his first win in the DTM. This was BMW’s fourth podium finish of the season, while BMW Team RMG made its debut on the podium. Tomczyk’s team-mate Joey Hand (US), at the wheel of the SAMSUNG BMW M3 DTM, finished ninth to score his first DTM points. Augusto Farfus (BR, Castrol EDGE BMW M3 DTM) also added another point to his tally, ending the race in tenth. In contrast, the remaining BMW Motorsport drivers leave Austria empty-handed. Both Andy Priaulx (GB, Crowne Plaza Hotels BMW M3 DTM) and Dirk Werner (DE, E-POSTBRIEF BMW M3 DTM) were involved in incidents shortly after the start of the race, and had to give up early on the proceedings. Bruno Spengler (CA, BMW Bank M3 DTM) was also hit by a rival on the first lap, resulting in damage to the front of his car. The BMW Team Schnitzer driver was initially able to continue. However, numerous attacks by other drivers meant he was ultimately forced to retire during his second pit stop, while running 11th. BMW motorsport director Jens Marquardt says the fourth race of the season once again proves that the 2012 DTM is hard to beat when it comes to excitement. “The drivers pulled off a lot of overtaking manoeuvres, including some pretty fierce attacks,” he says. “I am delighted for BMW Team RMG, who put on an impressive show with both drivers today. Martin Tomczyk claimed his first podium of the year, while Joey hand finished ninth to score his best DTM result. “Augusto Farfus also picked up a point in tenth – and all that against a magnificent backdrop. Coupe couple – a pigeon pair When it comes to hot rodding, Paul and Ngaire Gibson are not the type of motoring enthusiasts who finish a car rebuild then keep it wrapped up in cotton wool in the garage. As Ngaire says, it is all about getting out and enjoying the classic cars. “What’s the point of having these lovely cars if you’re not going to get out and use them? That’s the fun of the whole thing – we’ve been all over New Zealand with our cars including all the way down to Invercargill.” The couple has been into old classics for more than 40 years, starting off from when Paul bought his first car - a 1947 Ford Coupe, which the young couple used to cruise in as Paul’s everyday car. “I was 14 and he was 15 when he bought that car and it’s still his pride today.” But rather than being confined to the passenger seat, Ngaire is now behind the wheel of her own classic Ford Coupe – a 1946 model which is just back on the road after a two-year rebuild. Ngaire is as big a fan as the rest when it comes to cruising in the old Ford coupes. But she leaves the rebuild work to Paul, his brother David and her son Scott, while elder son Grant takes care of the painting. At Christmas, after a two year labour of love, Ngaire got her own finished 1946 Ford Coupe to almost match Paul’s 1947 model. The pair’s main difference is colour, with Paul’s orange, while Ngaire’s is a chameleon shade – looking black in dark conditions, but turning a bronzey-green in the bright sun. Paul says it was the car’s shape that he fell in love with when he first saw it, but was soon
playing around under the bonnet to soup it up. “I had it probably for two years then we started playing around with the engines and parts and mixing it up from there to improve it.” Shortly after this he and his two brothers (David and Rob Gibson) got involved in Tauranga’s hot rodding scene and the Bay Rodders group. They have been involved ever since, aside from a small gap when Paul and Ngaire’s family were growing up. “We’ve all had hot rods for donkey’s years

– we all help each other with the work and just enjoy older cars. Most weekends we will go on a road trip – they don’t just sit in a shed.” Older brother David has a ’38 Ford Coupe and a Model A Pickup, and does a lot of work on other rods as a certified welder, while Rob has a ‘48 Dodge. Over the years cars have come and gone, including a ‘T Bucket’ (Model T) and other cars which he has fixed up and sold. “I’d get the odd one as a good deal and do a bit on them and flick them off. David has had more – including a 1947 Merc Sedan, which a guy from Scotland fell in love with and took back to Scotland.” Ngaire got her ’46 coupe 23 years ago when Paul’s car was out of commission being rebuilt. “So that was our family car, shopping hack and what-not. We drove it for years like that then we decided to update it – jag rear, jag front, falcon motor 302 injected with a four stage auto. “It’s great being part of the crowd – we all get together and we think the same, we are petrol-heads or hot rodders.” Paul says the group go to as many events as possible and will be displaying the cars at next Sunday’s Bay Rodders display at the Durham St carpark (June 24, 9am-2pm). With Ngaire’s rebuild complete Paul has turned his attention to a new project – a 1948 Mercury convertible. By Hamish Carter

More than 1000km on a tank of petrol
Subaru’s fuel efficient technology passed another test last week, when the latest model Impreza sedan and XV crossover vehicles drove from South Auckland to Timaru on just one tank of petrol. The Impreza averaged 5.1 litres/100 kms for the nearly 1100km journey and the XV recorded 5.3 litres/100 kms. Both had the advantage of the latest generation, two-litre, four cylinder Boxer engine with variable valve timing and the automatic
Subaru Lineartronic Transmission (SLT), which allows the cars to cruise at open road speeds at low engine revs, thus saving fuel. The result is miserly consumption, even while travelling around 90km/h. The stop start engine technology played its part too. The Impreza’s multi function computer showing it saved 60ml of fuel over the journey, even though there were minimal stops – even for traffic lights – en route. From the start, the two cars headed down Sate Highway 2 through Maramarua and then onto State Highway 27 up the Hauraki Plains to Tirau. From then on the route
followed Sate Highway 1, all the way to the Wellington to Picton Ferry and then down the Kaikoura Coast, around the outskirts of Christchurch and down the Canterbury Plains. Before setting out, the team was cautiously optimistic it could make the Timaru target, even though the Impreza only has a 55 litre fuel tank. It finally rolled to a stop in the southern outskirts of the South Canterbury city. The XV, with its 60 litre capacity got a little further to Makakihi, 30 kms south of Timaru.
