Reece Killingback will be rubbing shoulders with V8 Supercar drivers when he races his Hillman Imp at Pukekohe this weekend.

It’s your classic David and Goliath tale, but this time the battle has been on the motor track. Tauranga’s Reece Killingback may not have won the Independent Race Classes (IRC) series class, but he did the next best thing – coming second in the NZGT ‘all-comers’ class in his zippy Hillman Imp, defying the odds to beat a range of late model high-performance cars from Subaru WRX’s to Trans Ams. “It was a lot better than we expected, because we had missed the first round in Manfield,” says Reece, who climbed the rankings each round since winning the second event in Taupo. “We were aiming to make the top five but this has been beyond our expectations. It’s pretty good for the smallest car with the smallest budget.” Reece’s success, coming behind Wellington’s Brock Cooley in his high performance Mitsubishi EVO, has earned him a spot to

race at Pukekohe in the GTRNZ support class – which combines the fastest cars of the all-comers, GT1 and GT2 classes – when V8 Supercars return this weekend. “It’s the big event. I usually watch it on TV, but it’s going to be so much better being there with my car. It’s really going to be great with the whole atmosphere.” Reece is all geared up to give the series another shot next year and while his success on track has drawn a lot of attention, he is not expecting anyone to copy his lead and install a 300 horsepower Subaru WRX engine in the small Imp body. “It’s the kind of car that only appeals to certain people,” says Reece, who drives another Imp as his everyday car. The modifications to the Imp have given it a legendary powerto-weight ratio which enables it to go from 0-100 kmph in 3.5 seconds. ‘Silly old bugger’ races on Te Puke’s John Feaver can still clearly remember when he first fell under the spell of engines. It was 1948 and the eight-year-old Taranaki boy was spellbound by the lawnmower with a motor which his father had brought home. “Since I clapped eyes on that motor I’ve been mad on motors and things that go round ever since.” At 16 he bought his first motorcycle, a 1955 Matchless 350 which he got his taste for racing around Taranaki country roads on special closed race events, including reaching 81.82 mph at his first event. “I remember that like it was yesterday. I was very happy with that speed.” It was the beginning of a life-time love for motorbikes and speed, which has seen his collection of bikes grow over the years with well-known classics, others he has modified and those he has made completely himself. Among them was a homemade bike he built using a 500cc Triumph engine which he raced on the Taranaki back roads at 119.6mph 45 years ago. “I make things. I love it, that’s what I do,” says John, who still has the bike among many in his collection and hopes to give it a well-earned “birthday” spruce up. But with so many projects on the go he is unsure when he will have the time. His love for engineering and improving, together with a passion to follow in the path of his hero Burt Munro, has seen John rebuild a written-off EX 500 Kawasaki twin to “better than original” performance to race on the salt flats at Lake Gairdner in South Australia. Speed Week, which had all seen racing cancelled due to rain, John, 72, finally achieved his dream earlier thsi year setting a record of 123.174 m/h (198.22km/h) for his stock production class bike. “It’s the most awesome place I’ve ever been, especially with the sun coming up on the salt in the morning, it’s awesome,” says John, describing the striking setting. But he could have done without the searing heat, saying “people were dropping like flies” and as result, hopes the meet will be pushed

back to its traditional March date instead of February. John describes the Kawasaki as “just a baby by current standards” but with a good heart, and is focusing on the 500cc class because it’s not a glamour class but is one he’s familiar with. “I followed old Burt Munro all my life, I’m a big fan of the old bugger, it was just one of those things I had to do but I still need to do it on the old Triumph – that’s’ what I want to do- to get the ultimate speed out of the thing.”

At next year’s event he wants to take his favourite bike – his 1961 pre-unit Triumph, and is already working on a pre-55 special construction frame and alcohol-fuelled motor for the class he wants to race in. “There’s no prize money, you just do it for the achievement, for the record.” When he is not toiling away in his workshop John is often out riding with his mates from the Tauranga Classic Motorcycle Club. “We’re just silly old buggers who will never grow up.” By Hamish Carter

Euro meets Japanese With visions of Japanese motoring in his mind, Sideline Side got a real surprise when he picked up the latest vehicle to test drive from Bay of Plenty Honda. “Wow” was Sid’s reaction when he was given the keys to a brand new, out of the box Honda Euro Civic to put through its paces on a beautiful autumn day. Sitting in the control position gives a feeling of being in a cockpit seat with all the gadgetry easily at hand. A Multi Information Display (MID) takes centre stage on the dashboard with a clock wallpaper display where you can post a photographic background and a trip computer.

Economy is trumpeted as a cornerstone of the Euro Civic with an impressive official ADR figure of 6.5 litres per 100 kilometres. Growing up in a high octane family it was always only a matter of time before James Key followed his dad down the drag strip. Te Puna-based James, who was named Bay Rodders’ ‘Drag racer of the Year’ last year, finished the summer drag-racing season on a speedy note at Meremere last weekend setting his fastest ever time in his 1966 Chevy El Camino pickup. James shaved a tenth of a second off his previous fastest quarter mile, to set a new personal best of 13.4 seconds (102 mph) but despite his blistering speed he got knocked out in his eighth round after

making it to third place. “Unfortunately, I red-lit in the round before the finals so I was disqualified.” James knows from experience how easy it is to ‘red light’ taking off before the light turns green, and is more annoyed about missing the $500 first prize in his 1972 American origin class against other muscle cars. “I was really happy how it went and setting my fastest speed,” says James, who describes it as a good way to round out a successful season, which included winning his class at a Meremere competition meeting in February. Last year, he made the top eight in his class at the Nostalgia Drags out of a field of 60.

“The Nostalgia Drags is pretty much just for fun. There are no points up for grabs, but you still want to give it everything you can. I always race to win – if you relax too much that’s when you slip up.” The Meremere meet attracts rodders from across the North Island and sometimes a few from the South Island when great weather is guaranteed. He got a taste for motorsport competition as a motocross rider in his younger years and did not hesitate when his father offered him his 1966 Chevy El Camino for his first drag racing season. “My dad (John) has done it for 30 years and I’ve just grown up with it. He had a car and he said one day ‘do you want to start

doing it yourself ’.” James had a great debut season when he began as a rookie five years ago, finishing second overall in points and making it to the final at his first meeting. He has had his “ups and downs” since, but remains as passionate about drag racing as ever and has raced almost 600 passes since. “I just love it. It’s the adrenaline rush more than anything. It’s about being able to push the car to its limits in a controlled safe environment.” After his first year racing, James bought his own 1966 El Camino, which he restored with the help of his panel beater father and a car painter friend who did the work for free. On track for Australian karting Rising Bayfair motorsports star Callum Hedge has returned from the national karting championships with his eyes set on the Australian circuit as his next step to the top of motorsport. Callum, 9, won the cadet class title at the national championships in Wellington over Easter – beating some competitors more than two years his senior in the under 12-year-old class.

Bayfair’s karting champion Callum Hedge will soon be racing regularly in Australia to help build on his recent national and North Island titles.

His national title builds on his success during the past year when he has become a major force in cadet karting. He won the North Island championships late last year following a season where he dominated his competition winning every race. His father Carlos says winning the national cadet title had always been the goal and their carefully-laid plan has paid off. “We have put a lot of planning and work into it over the past months but we never took anything for granted. We

had everything organised – we had a good kart, a good engine, a good driver and we had our driver coach Nicky Irwin there – we had a good plan and we stuck to it,” says Carlos. After winning the national title – smashing his opponents in the final by finishing 11 seconds ahead – Callum has decided to turn his focus to compete in a Melbourne circuit every month on a more advanced kart chassis. “Callum has decided he doesn’t want to race a cadet kart anymore and would prefer to race once a month in Australia so he’s pushing himself and learning something new.” It will mean giving away the second place he currently holds in the lower North Island ‘Goldstar’ karting series which they travel to compete in every week, but for the Hedges it is all

about pushing yourself to retain a winning edge. Carlos says racing on the more advanced chassis – which is a smaller version of a full-size chassis – will allow him to make adjustments for driving conditions that will affect camber and caster. “It will help him when he goes to the next class in New Zealand in seven month’s time, when he starts racing in the Junior Restricted class.” “We see he’s not going to get any more gains in staying in that class so we are going to shift him and start again.” Callum has received some sponsorship to help cover his costs for his Australian races – which he plans to start competing in, in about six weeks. Carlos says the family pours thousands of dollars into karting every year to help give Callum his best chance, but stresses that they do not pressure him as parents. “He puts pressure on himself. He’s got the drive and the will to give it everything. If he’s made a mistake in a race we never have to say a thing – he takes it on board himself and he’ll be upset himself. He is very determined about his karting.” Carlos says karting is a great sport for anyone and you do not have to spend a lot of money with entry-level kart packages available for about $3500. Ultimately, Callum would love to make it to the top of international motorsport and Carlos is already thinking about racing cars as soon as he is eligible at 12, but for now the focus is on karting. “All sports these days are dominated by young people and we would like to keep him in the highest class possible for his age so he continues to be challenged.” By Hamish Carter
