Waitawheta Angus tops in steaks Waihi Angus breeders Alistair and Patricia Sharpe, who produce some of the country’s tastiest steaks, were finalists in this week’s national Steak of Origin Producer of the Decade competition.

The yearling heifer the Sharpes entered in the Queen of Hearts Competition, run in conjunction with the steak event, came sixth out of 23 and sold for $4000 at the Beef + Lamb New Zealand Beef
Waitawheta Angus is among the smaller of the studs to enter, having just 160 breeding cows, grazing on 121 hectares in the foothills of the Kaimai Ranges near Waihi.
Distinction – one of the breeding bulls at Waitawheta Angus Stud, which has made the finals of the national Steak of Origin Producer of the Decade competition.
Pat says the decision to breed Angus cattle came about almost by accident. “We bought the farm at the time of the 1981 floods which went right through this area and took out houses in Waikino. We had only three paddocks which weren’t flooded and the cows had to get up into the bush margins. When we finally brought them down again it was the black ones which had survived the best, so we decided to concentrate on them.” Thirty-one years on they are still happy with their decision. “Angus have a great nature and are easy to handle. They are excellent mothers and great foragers.”

Mini tornado hits Papamoa homes A mini tornado ripped through Papamoa on Monday night destroying house roofs during a wild storm. Firefighters were called to Longview Drive at about 8.30pm as residents
heard loud bangs and swirling winds. Three Fire Brigades including Mount Maunganui responded to the call and worked for about two hours to put tarpaulins on damaged house roofs. Several houses in one street were damaged in the storm.
Class sizes set to increase Class sizes in Bay of Plenty schools are set to increase after the Government’s pre-Budget education changes announced on Wednesday. Education Minister Hekia Parata says a total of $511.9million will go into education in the next budget with $60million going into boosting teacher recruitment and training. Teachers will also be required to have minimum postgraduate qualifications to train. Hekia says in the current economic climate the Government is required to make some trade-offs.

but she prepared well and invested her time in me and my mates. When I think of women who have been a ‘spiritual mother’ to me, I always think of Mary. As we celebrated Mothers’ Day at St Peter’s on Sunday, we honoured biological mothers, adoptive mothers and spiritual mothers and we talked about what the Bible means by honouring your mother. Ephesians 6.2 “Honour your father and mother.” I think there are three things that we should do post Mothers’ Day to honour our mums. 1. Speak well of our mums. It seems obvious but actually a lot of people subtly put their
mums down. What would you want to say in honour of your mum? What do you usually say about your mum? What is the tone of voice you assume when you talk about your mum? 2. Expect good things of your mum. Our expectations create a platform for each other to succeed on. My mum’s a lovely woman, but she’s recently been widowed and it would be easy for us to assume that she won’t manage so well now. Obviously there’s a lot of adjusting and grief to go through, but I’ve been encouraged to see my mum still keeping up many of the ways she helps others. We can help our mums age well by having positive as well as real-
istic expectations. I expect that my mum will still have words of wisdom to sow into my life. 3. We can overlook a few faults. My mum was always good at picking her battles and knowing what mattered and what didn’t, let’s keep extending that grace to our mums. Let’s be careful not to make too much of an occasional unusual choice our mum’s make. I think that these are very important biblical principles, that if we apply in our lives we can turn Mothers’ Day from a commercial excuse into a way of life that honours our Whaea. Scripture declares in Proverbs 14:34 that “righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people”. The Amplified Bible enlarges the meaning of the words: “uprightness and right standing with God (moral and spiritual rectitude in every area and relation) elevate a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people”. Therefore, righteousness and sin are not relative terms based on whatever criteria we choose to measure sin and righteousness by. Righteousness that elevates, builds up or lifts up a nation or sin which is a reproach or a shame to any people are not measured by our own standards or society’s standards. Rather, it is righteousness before a just and holy God - it is uprightness and right standing with the God of heaven and earth that exalts a nation. Likewise, it is sin that is self-seeking rebellion and unrighteousness before a holy God, that is a reproach to any nation and which ultimately will bring God’s just judgment on a nation. God is love but God is holy and He cannot express His love and deny His holiness - nor can He express His holiness and deny His love. In His great love, He gives nations every opportunity to respond to His love and kindness that leads to repentance, that leads to a turning away from self-seeking rebellion and opposition to God and that results in a nation turning to God. But a time
comes when God’s justice and judgment must be outworked otherwise He would not be a holy and just God. Former Prime Minister Helen Clarke declared that New Zealand was no longer a Christian nation and that we are in fact now a secular nation. Laws passed in our nation that are contrary to righteousness and right standing with God and leadership in the nation that flouts God’s Word and His holiness, leaves us as a nation who are in sin and are thus a reproach to God. The writer to the Hebrew Church says in Hebrews 10:26-27, “For if we go on deliberately and willingly sinning after once acquiring the knowledge of the Truth, there is no longer any sacrifice left to atone for (our) sins (no further offering to which to look forward). (There is nothing left for us then) but a kind of awful and fearful prospect and expectation of divine judgment and the fury of burning wrath and indignation which will consume those who put themselves in opposition (to God)”. Biblical righteousness needs to be restored to our nation but it will take a move of God that begins with revival in the Church for that to happen. Dr Andrew Murray who wrote much on prayer stated that “a revived Church is the only hope for a dying world”. We need to be praying for such a revival.
