SPACES Repurposed
COVID-19 has shaped and affected the future of home interior design, writes
Ntaba Phili

The world of design is a rapidly changing one. New technologies, greener, more efficient products architecturally and aesthetically, as well as awareness of repurposing and optimising, were setting the scene even before COVID-19.
But since the pandemic, this is even more so. In an industry that prides itself on innovation and continuous development, even we in the design world have had to adapt to a new market, with a different set of requirements, functions and limitations. And that’s where we thrive. It’s the perfect melting pot for creative solutions.
Not only has this inspired adapting and reshaping our businesses, services and roll out, but it has broken new ground in exposing our greater social responsibility. A home should not only be a place of refuge, but should reveal form and function in ways that now encompass so many more complex – and often opposing – needs.

“Home owners have a newfound realisation of the need to renovate, refresh and reorganise rooms and flow, and can now engage more actively in the creative process.”
Privacy for home office set-ups, Zoom calls, appropriate surface space and storage, and task lighting for working from home. Healthy mind and body solutions incorporating home gyms that don’t eat up valuable real estate in the home. Multi-purpose furnishings that transition from useful to setting the scene for relaxation and restoration.
Beyond aesthetics, interior design is essential for the impact it has on the occupant’s mood, productivity, quality of life and interactions with other members of the household. Time spent inside your home opens your eyes not only to those items that need seeing to, but also investing otherwise unspent vacation budget on your immediate and ever-present surroundings. Getting away is now redefined as a “staycation”. Interior design creates such a sanctuary space within your walls.
The work of interior designers has always been to improve quality of life by merging beauty, comfort and functionality. However it has become imperative for us in the industry to design with empathy at the forefront of the creative process, where spaces now evoke confidence, comfort, vitality, and a sense of security.
Interior designers are gaining insight from these challenging times, so we may inspire a new generation of innovation, bringing calm to the chaos. This paves the way for interior design to become ever more critical, as the collaboration between designers, developers and builders creates cohesive spaces that speak to more complex outcomes.

Home owners have a newfound realisation of the need to renovate, refresh and reorganise rooms and flow, and can now engage more actively in the creative process.
Interior design is at the forefront of remodelling the approach to a “new normal” in the way of living, and using space, responding to challenges brought on by the pandemic. Finding solutions to problems that have arisen in our society through extraordinary expressions of design go beyond the aesthetic. Q

latest local and international styles and design trends. Our young and dynamic team constantly learns and evolves.
What should readers keep in mind when looking for an interior designer? Firstly – rapport. A project can last anything from six to 18 months, depending on the size of the build. Find a professional who carries you, echoes your enthusiasm and brings joy to your encounters and processes.

Secondly, capacity and reputation. There are so many little details that need to be taken care of. If it is a large build, you have to employ a reputable company with capacity and enough staff to assist throughout the entire build project. What elements do you always try to include in a design? We design with functionality, but never forgetting beauty. For example, for a focal kitchen in the middle of reception areas, it is imperative for it to complement its surroundings and look more like cabinetry than a conventional kitchen.

In our designs, we use high-end stone surfaces, luxurious mirror cladding, fabulous bespoke lighting, top-of-the-range appliances, clever storage and integrated technology – all combined into a functional and aesthetically luxurious space.
When working on a home, what’s the most important factor? A beautifully textured look with a strong play of depth, using height and thickness of units and materials, which create interest. Lighting is important as it completes a design.
South African design is… Dynamic. South Africans love natural elements, and enjoy bringing in international styles with a modern touch.
Where do your source inspiration from? Our clients are our inspiration. They travel, aspire, dream and work hard at their relevant professions, and graciously allow us to become a part of their stories, and then let our creations interweave their hopes and dreams into reality.

A-Z Design Boutique
A full-service interior design studio, A-Z Design Boutique creates beautiful and functional residential interior spaces.

How would you define South African design? In a word, I would say “conscientious”. A design style that is meticulous about being practical with the available resources, while being creative and innovative in its application.
A-Z Design Boutique’s design philosophy… I believe that a home is its owner’s refuge, an escape from today’s fastpaced life. My aim is to create meaningful spaces that appeal to the senses and are uplifting. A designer should work closely with the owner to better understand their specific lifestyle requirements in order to conceptualise tailored designs and create the home of their dreams.
What should home owners keep in mind when looking for an interior designer? Look for someone you are comfortable communicating with and who has a proven track record of delivering on time.
What elements do you always try to include in your interior design? At A-Z Design Boutique, our mission is to create spaces in a home that would give the same feeling as a visit to a favourite five-star hotel. We want to purposefully include elements and finishes that will create spaces where a home owner can relax and get lost in the beauty around them. When working on a home, what’s most important to you? The most important factor is to understand the owner’s vision and lifestyle to create a space that would represent the best of our skills and their dreams. We ensure this is achieved through our collaborative planning and conceptualisation phase during the design process.
Where do you source inspiration from?
As a travel enthusiast, I draw most of my design inspiration from the different countries I have visited and cultures I have experienced. I always curate the best local and international elements and experiences, and translate that into fresh, bespoke designs.
Good design is… Memorable and functional.

Audi Snÿman Interior Design
An internationally recognised interior design company that provides luxurious solutions for bespoke homes.

What first drew you into the world of interior design? Twenty-five years ago I removed my microbiology laboratory coat to pursue a passion of interior design. Quality, sustainability and innovation are high on my agenda when considering clients’ needs and aspirations.
Underpinning these factors is meticulous planning. I engage with my client as the project moves through many layers of design, from conception, to implementation, completion and the great reveal, touching the process at every level until an exquisite space has been developed for my client, their family and friends to enjoy.
Audi Snÿman Interior Design’s design philosophy is… With no planning, there’s no performance. I have experienced the value of meticulous planning and constantly inform clients of this critical success factor. It saves a lot of time and money. My 25 years of experience have taught me many things, one thing being the invaluable role experience plays in the interior design industry. This is another cost-saving factor long-term, I might add!

AUDI SNŸMAN FOUNDER AND CEO
Leading the way by making clients’ dreams a reality through high-end expertise, fun experiences and integrity-driven partnerships, Audi Snÿman Interior Design provides inspiring, eclectic and timeless spaces ensuring clients can live their best lives.

Audi Snÿman Interior Design’s signature style is… Modern with a classic edge. Designs that incorporate sustainability and nature, and are completely bespoke. When working on a home, what’s the most important factor for you? Planning! Spend time with the client, planning the entire process with their input. Get to know their needs and then follow through and bring their dream to life. I am always available afterwards should they wish
to elevate and refine their dream down the line. What inspires you? My clients and their special dreams. I watch the local and international trends with keen interest. Nature and textures exhilarate me. I am also enjoying watching the global competitive space and recently was shortlisted in three categories for the International Design Awards in London. The awards ceremony takes place in September so we’re very excited about that… watch this space!

Carné Interior Design
An established residential interior and office design company with a local and international presence.

What drew you to interior design? I just love design, décor and creating cohesive colour schemes and spaces. I have a way of working with indoor spaces, making them functional, safe and visually appealing by calculating space requirements and furnishings, colours, lighting and materials.
Carné Interior Design’s design philosophy is… One word: creative. We are sensitive to what is correct, what the space allows and most importantly, what the client’s needs are.
Keeping up to date on current styles and trends is an important part of my job, as is a knowledge of complementary colours. It is also necessary to be able to translate my artistic eye into a design that conveys ideas to clients.
Part of being successful as an interior designer is being able to see what the space could be. I can be looking at an empty room or office and envisioning what can work in that space, or I might be looking at a decorated space and imagining something significantly different. Unlike looking at a blank canvas, this requires the ability to see potential in natural lighting, the angles of walls and ceilings, and more. What elements do you always try to include in your interior design? It’s a combination of soft lighting, mirrors, accent walls as attention-drawing features and showstopping art pieces. These elements add a wow factor to any space.
When working on a home, what is the most important factor for you? Focal points, balance and quality.
South African design is… Demanding, world-class, creative, competitive.
Good design is… Using and incorporating unique designs. Invest in a bespoke piece of furniture or art that has an utterly unique design. Then make it a focal point of your interior decoration and place it in an area where it will be easily noticed.

Ebotse Interiors
An interior design and décor company specialising in flower arranging and home staging.

What drew you to interior design?
My love for interior design came about when I was a little girl. I used to pick flowers from the veld and adorn our family home with beautiful arrangements. After 16 years of working at a government entity, I resigned and decided to pursue my passion and completed an interior design course.
I love being creative and expressing it, working on residential projects and seeing my clients happy with the outcome. It brings me happiness!
Ebotse Interiors’ design philosophy is… The name EBOTSE - which is a Sepedi word meaning “it is beautiful” - inspires, captures and reminds me that every time my potential clients invite me into their already elegant, beautiful, opulent, tranquil, stylish, enjoyable homes, I get the opportunity to use my flowers to epitomise and enhance all these qualities. I see this as bringing the “art” out of artificial flowers and this is satisfying for my clients and myself - it is the essence of EBOTSE.

MANOKENG MAKHOANA DIRECTOR
In mid-2020, Ebotse Interiors was born despite the many challenges that could arise during a pandemic. Director, Manokeng Makhoana strives to bring elegance to a home.
Define your signature style? Elegance. It’s what we strive for. What should a home owner keep in mind when looking for an interior designer? Experience and knowledge. A professional who can transform any space into one where they can live, work and play, and most importantly, a space they can truly call home. When working on a home, what’s the most important factor for you? To create a home and not a museum. Guests must feel welcome and relaxed from the moment they step in. I like to keep things simple yet elegant.

As an interior designer, how would you describe South African design? The brightness of our traditional colours that convey a sense of jubilance and a vibrant energy – it’s so unique to South African design. What inspires you? I am often inspired by our very own South African designers with their unique and iconic styles. Their innovation by making the most out of whatever they have at their disposal is always admirable. Good design is… Innovative, and ensures the product or space is functional and useful to the owners.

Ground Floor Interiors
A full-service interior design firm with a focus on creating a memorable service and outcome.

Ground Floor Interiors’ design philosophy is… Design is a not merely a profession, it is a way of life –and being a designer is not about what we are, it is about who we are. Clients trust us with their interior spaces; they trust that we will give them the best design for them, and we should always remember that.
How has your design philosophy evolved over time? Over the years in the industry (and years in adult life), my philosophy has changed to creating personal sanctuaries for my clients, while trying to be as sustainable as possible in the process. This means trying to create long-lasting spaces, filled with quality pieces, as well as reusing and revamping existing pieces where possible – working against a throw-away society.
What should home owners keep in mind when looking for an interior designer? It is so personal: the designer chosen is the person you entrust to transform your aspirational idea into a physical reality. With this in mind, home owners should do their research, use a professional who is qualified, preferably registered with a professional body such as the African Institute of the Interior Design Professions, and get client references. How would you define South African interior design? I would describe South African style as highly underrated. The masses tend to always gravitate to internationally made products. With global media it is very difficult not to, but I think we all (clients and designers) should try to research more of what is available locally. South African design has a sort of unique happy vibe that engulfs it. It’s probably a reflection of our many diverse cultures and climate.
Good design is… Balancing the scale of aesthetics and function. This means applying our learnt skills, starting with basic design principles and elements. In an ideal world, good design should be available to everyone.

DALE DENNIS CO-FOUNDER AND CREATIVE DIRECTOR
Ground Floor Interiors aims to provide a personal design experience for its clients. Offering professional project management, the firm prides itself on guiding the client all the way through the design implementation, and completion process.

Larger than Design
A specialist in conceptualising interior spaces with product procurement and interior styling.

Larger than Design’s design philosophy is… Getting a detailed brief from a client and incorporating our design background while enhancing our clients’ preferences. This keeps our design fresh and alive throughout the duration of the project.
Our signature design style is… Timeless comfort, like hotel-style. I love coming home to a home, not a showroom – and this is what I want for my clients too. As a designer, each item that’s selected should be comfortable and appealing. A client shouldn’t feel the need to redo their home every three years to keep up with the Joneses. What elements do you always try to include in your interior design? I enjoy keeping my colour palette neutral and not over-cluttering a space. Keeping the colours calm gives room to change accent pieces or to make them stand out. When working on a home, what’s the most important factor for you? Managing the budget effectively and spreading it equally will ensure the end goal is achieved. There are many nice products on the market, and I am there to help a client prioritise which items will be vital for completion and which can be added at a later stage. Where do you source inspiration from? International interior design has always been my go-to source. European design is elegant and timeless. I like to incorporate designs that have been tested, which might seem like a simple approach, but it guides me not to over-design a space. Less is more.
South African design… Has evolved very much since I started in 2005. We are taking on more of the European trends with matt finishes and adding a lot of texture instead of patterns to our design.
Good design is… Balance. In colour, combining both light and dark. Balancing natural elements together with manmade products. Breaking monochrome interiors with a splash of colour or texture. It’s all about perfecting the balance of a space.

LIEZEL VILJOEN DIRECTOR
Renovating homes has been a fun family activity since Liezel Viljoen was a student. Celebrating 16 years, Larger than Design prides itself on offering personalised solutions for high-end homes.

Lynne Blumberg Interior Design
A well-established interior design company with an international footprint. The brand represents excellence, quality design and superb service.

What first drew you to interior design?

LYNNE BLUMBERG FOUNDER AND MANAGING DIRECTOR
As one of South Africa’s leading interior design agencies, Lynne Blumberg Interior Design won the prestigious International Design Et Al Award in 2019 in the high-end residential category.

Both my parents were involved in fabric. My mother owned and designed clothing for her store, Lady Cotton, and my dad imported fabrics. Naturally, I was introduced to fabrics as a toddler. As a young mum I decided that I needed to work and chose my career in interior design, which has always been and still is my passion, my business, my life. Lynne Blumberg Interior Design’s design philosophy is… I live and breathe interior design. My philosophy is simple: work with your eyes and your heart! Your heart has to be in every project you take on, be it large or small. I work with my soul. I believe every client who walks in or calls my office deserves the best of me and my designers, be it a huge project or a small one.
It is a privilege to be asked to design someone’s home and one needs to be respectful and give the client an experience of a lifetime. People say interior design is only for the super wealthy. I say that is untrue – good design is for everyone.
What do you always try to achieve in your designs? Simplicity. A stylish and practical space. When working on a home, what’s the most important factor for you? That it remains welcoming, skillfully designed, and, although beautiful, it must be lived in without fear or anxiety that it could be spoilt.
South African design is… So edgy and adventurous. We have amazing artisans with beautiful products. Good design is… Anything that makes you feel good! What inspires your designs? I love travelling to design shows in Italy and Paris – there’s always amazing inspiration. Fabrics and great design are inspirational too. People never fail to inspire me.

Wanda-Michelle Interiors
An elegant and thoroughly extraordinary interior design company

How would you describe your design philosophy? I believe an environment should cocoon its inhabitants, offering a soul-soothing reprieve from the world. For me, this means soft neutrals on textures that beg to be touched, lighting that seduces the soul and artworks that inspire dreams.
What is the first thing you like to do when you meet with new clients? I like to establish a connection on an emotional level. Working with a client, particularly on their main residence, is a journey of discovery. The deeper the connection with the client, the closer you get to their desired outcome.
When it comes to interiors, do you feel we’re all still very trend-driven or is there a move towards developing personal style? Although I wouldn’t classify my own style as trendy, I find myself drawn towards the latest colours and textures, new innovations and style that add a “pop” away from the mundane. Trend evolves and renews and adds a measure of anticipation for things to come. It’s important, however, not to be defined by trends rather than one’s own unique style.

WANDA-MICHELLE HADLOW OWNER
Awe-inspiring innovation, elaborate detail and phenomenal inventiveness are the hallmarks of Cape Town- and Gautengbased maestro of design, Wanda-Michelle Interiors (WMI).

Trends aside, what is the one thing you’d like our readers to take on board when decorating? That individual furniture pieces may, in their own right, be sculptural and create a focal point but it’s really about the layering, the elements around it that are necessary to create the whole. Good design is… A sublime and sensuous coming together of form and function, a celebration of an idea given the freedom to “become”.

WCHRISTELLE AFANA FONKEM OWNER
Christelle Afana Fonkem of At Home with Christelle was destined to be an interior designer. She believes a space is an extension of one’s personality and needs to be designed accordingly.
hat inspired you to become an interior designer? I was born to be in this industry. I come from a lineage of architects and developers. My father, Claude Afana, was an architect and engineer, and my grandfather, Joseph Essono, was a developer.
Growing up in this environment where plans, designs and aesthetics were discussed, I shared in their love of fine things and beautiful interiors. Interior design and décor are a huge passion and each time I’m decorating, I’m at my best.
At Home with Christelle’s design philosophy is… With regards to a space, the outside is sometimes chaotic, so the interior has to be a safe space, bringing harmony, happiness and peace. As an interior designer, I am there to create that feeling, mood and comfort.
What is At Home with Christelle’s signature style? I adore a luxe style, but it doesn’t have to be lavish. It’s about the clever use of various materials such as steel, wood, iron, stone, mirrors and fabrics, among others. These elements bring the luxe feel to a space.
What elements do you always try to include in your interior design? Mirrors and art on walls as well as accessories –these are the elements that don’t date and add personality to a space.
Good design is… Going the extra mile. It’s also about taking risks and not being safe all the time.

DCARYN OVERTON
INTERIOR DESIGNER
KATHERINE MCINTOSH
INTERIOR DESIGNER
Dandelion Designs’ passion is to bring their clients’ visions to life through creating beautiful and functional spaces to live and work well in.
andelion Designs’ design philosophy… Design is a sensory experience. It is not only visual, it can be so much more. We want our designs to evoke emotions for the owner; whether it be feelings of relaxation, excitement, or cosiness and comfort.
How has your design approach evolved? Our design has become more edited. It is about being more conscious of what we put into spaces and why. There is a beautiful balance that can be found when you have just the right ratios of form, function and beauty.
What should home owners keep in mind when looking for an interior designer? It is important to meet with your designer upfront, to get a sense of each other, and discuss your likes and dislikes. You need to be able to speak openly about budgets; they are not targets, but a very real part of everyone’s life. Everybody has one!
When working on a home, what’s most important? We love to build relationships. We want our clients to be happy and fall in love with their home every time they walk through the front door. There is no better satisfaction than a happy home owner. What elements do you always try to include in your interiors? We love to make spaces feel alive with plants. Layers of lighting are also something we like to focus on, and should be considered and curated to suit the space or the feel one is trying to achieve.

House of Interiors – Bloemfontein

DKIRSTY LANGLEY DIRECTOR
With a passion for interiors, Design Hatch invests in each project with the aim of turning its clients’ design dreams into a beautiful reality. In a process such as design, Design Hatch builds a strong and trustworthy relationship with clients, to deliver spaces that meet and exceed all expectations.
esign Hatch’s design philosophy is... This is evolving for me. At the core, there must be the right amount of balance between functionality and aesthetic. However, in saying this, I am no stranger to introducing an element of luxury and surprise in a space.
How would you define your signature style? Sophisticated luxury! For me a good designer is one who can interpret what style the client is leaning towards and adapt to that. How has your approach to design evolved since you started? There is a lot more detail in each aspect of design. I try to think past just the initial look of a space right into the smallest of details, such as how a client will move and interact in the space, how we can add to the ease of daily living and how we can surpass the expectations of a client. What elements do you always try to include in your interior design? Texture. It is the one element in your home that you must have the right balance of. This could be balancing the polished floor tiles with elements of timber, a textured wall and a matt cabinetry finish. It is something that is easy to get wrong without the overall vision. Good design is… timeless. It must look good now and in many years to come too.

hat first drew you to interior design? My mother always had the ability to create beautiful homes with almost nothing. I believe the ability to design spaces is something you are born with. I love to see how small changes in a home can create a feeling of love and happiness.
House of Interiors – Bloemfontein’s design philosophy is… Although I can work with any design element, my approach is to listen to my customers and create an environment where the home owner feels that they have designed their own space with my magic wand.
Define your signature style? I do love to work with the classic aesthetic. However, it does not matter. I’m quite flexible and can adapt to a more ornate or contemporary style. My signature will always be to leave a trace of warmth.
What elements do you try to include in your interior design? I love to work with focal walls, exquisite lighting and varying textures.
Where do you get your inspiration from? I get inspiration from all over. It does not matter if I am in a luxury hotel or out hiking. We are always surrounded by designs. Sometimes it will be a client’s handbag or something she wears that will just get my mind going on designs. I also love to collaborate with other artists and designers. We learn every day.

HUGHES, DIRECTOR AND HEAD DESIGNER
Passionate about great design, Hughes Conceptual Interiors strives for unique design in every project. With the aim for the design to express the client’s personality and vision, director Emma-Jayne Hughes ensures functionality and attention to detail without sacrificing sophistication and beauty.
hat first drew you to interior design? From a young age I used to love going to my father’s furniture factory. My choice to study interior design stemmed from that exposure. I was always very aware of how a space looks and makes one feel, which is why I did my thesis on the psychology behind the use of colour in a room. I love that every project is different and exciting, that interior design is not just creativity but also requires technicality. It is so rewarding seeing my clients happy at the end of a project – this drives my passion further. Hughes Conceptual Interiors’ design philosophy is: “Form follows function” is always at the back of my mind – but I personally prefer to balance form and function. The spaces we work with are homes that are meant to be lived in; they are a place of comfort, therefore they need to be equally functional and aesthetically pleasing. What should home owners keep in mind when looking for an interior designer? Flexibility is key. A good designer is open to any ideas, suggestions, thoughts – and gives you what you want and need in your space. It is important to find an interior designer who is easy to work with and understands you. What elements do you always try to include in your design? When doing a full renovation or turnkey project, I always start with neutrals for the shell of the interior. This may initially seem boring, but it makes a beautiful base to add colour and texture.

nterior Bubble’s design philosophy is… Our philosophy is based on three things: to be instinctive; to focus on design that lasts versus replacement; and lastly, to show that good design should be experienced and not seen. What should readers keep in mind when looking for an interior designer? Be clear about your style. Communication is key. Trust should be a priority too. Design works better if there is transparency.
Interior Bubble’s signature style is… Eclectic and contemporary. I love incorporating elements from different cultures using different styles that are timeless and would give our client the warmth and comfort they are looking for in their homes.
What elements do you always try to include in your interior design? I love using different textures and patterns, because they have a way of integrating seamlessly and giving the room a different kind of look and feel.
When working on a home, what’s most important? For my clients to always feel at home and comfortable. We always make sure that we include elements that are warm, cosy and filled with things they love.
Where do you source your inspiration from? I’m a bush kind of girl. I love how nature is able to touch one’s soul without saying a word. Looking at how nature works to keep us calm – that inspires me. Nature helps me design to my best capabilities. Good design is … Timeless.

JENNIFER JONES
OWNER
Celebrating 20 years in the industry, Jennifer Jones Interiors prides itself on creating beautiful and functional homes for its clients. Owner, Jennifer Jones, who has over 25 years of experience in residential interiors, ensures each home completed reflects the owners and their personalities.
Jennifer Jones Interiors’ design philosophy is…
I have always remained true to the principal that the client inspires the look – not my taste. My work evolves and changes constantly as I embrace new trends and products to create original looks for every client, therefore it all starts with the client and their space – and it remains so.
The client’s responses to fabrics, colours and design suggestions are the source of my direction in creating a home that is uniquely tailored to each client. My role is then to offer them a vision that encompasses new trends and products, and is both practical and stylish, creating their ideal space. What elements do you always try to include in your interior design? The design process needs to be a cohesive process, and I take my initial inspiration from the architectural styling and the surrounding landscape of the home. It is important that the interior becomes an integral part of the exterior. My selections of all elements from floors, lighting and wall finishes right through to the fabrics and colours are all aligned with this principle. The end result is ultimately a flow through the home that feels natural and right. Good design is… creating magic!

Established in 2018, and with 10 years of industry experience, Jessica Boyer Interiors offers clients the opportunity to personalise their homes and private spaces with attention to detail through bespoke furniture and finishes. Each project is treated as one of its kind, with consideration of the brief and outcome.
Jessica Boyer Interiors’ design philosophy is…
To create something timeless, practical and functional, more than something “on-trend” or too current. I believe a strong interior won’t date and will remain beautiful and relevant for many years to come. It’s important to innovate and not imitate, and remain true to your own design language. What should a home owner keep in mind when looking for an interior designer? First identify with a designer’s style and their look and feel. They should do their research on what inspires them and where they find their inspiration. The relationship between client and designer needs to be open, with a good flow of communication so everyone’s expectations are managed and met. This will eliminate disappointment on both sides. Everyone needs to be on the same page to achieve the best possible outcome with the same end goal in mind. What type of elements do you always try to include in your interior design? I love bringing in hard-wearing materials and finishes, like fabrics with high rub counts, quartz or stone, as well as wood elements to warm a scheme. I feel you can’t go wrong with mixing it up with incredible textures and tones.

LLEANNE VAN NIEKERK OWNER AND INTERIOR DESIGNER
LVN Interiors creates custom interiors for new builds and renovations from floor plan development to interior drawings, custom cabinetry and finishes. The interior firm also selects furniture and window treatments, and provides styling and turnkey installations.
VN Interiors’ design philosophy is… To clearly understand the brief and aim for the wow factor. Everything else will fall into place.
What should readers keep in mind when looking for an interior designer? A large part of an interior designer’s role is to coordinate the project team and manage many elements of the project at the same time. Therefore your designer must be organised and have an eye for detail.
Lastly, style is one thing, but so is being practical. I often see designs that look amazing but aren’t suitable for everyday life. What elements do you always try to include in your interior design? My aesthetic is bright and clean. I like incorporating neutral colours, light fabrics and light furniture. I use the repetition of materials and textures as well as symmetry in spaces. Natural materials, earthy accent colours and organic textures are common in my designs. When working on a home, what’s the most important factor for you? Selecting pieces that not only bring the room to life, but are suitable to the scale and proportions of the room. One should curate a space rather than just decorate it. Ideally, this should be done from the beginning of a project with the architect.
Good design is… More than just aesthetics. It is all the things visible and invisible that make good design.

What elements do you always try to include in your interior design? I try to avoid too many inconsequential/ unnecessary décor items and try to find items like light fittings that double up as both a sculptural and functional element. Contrast and texture in design is essential for creating depth and visual excitement. When working on a home, what’s the most important factor for you? Continuity and flow throughout the space is essential through the use of a consistent colour palette, flooring and fabrics.

LOUISE SWEENEY OWNER AND CREATIVE DIRECTOR
With a small highly focused team, Lulu Maison Interior Design strives to create beautifully unique interior spaces based on the client’s requirements, ensuring projects are delivered on time, and without compromise and stress. The studio has worked on projects locally and internationally.
W Lulu Maison Interior Design
hat first drew you to interior design? My passion for creativity and design began at a very early age. I come from an artistic background and have experienced diverse cultures, by living in a total of 36 homes around the world.
Much time was spent by my mother and then me creating our own beautiful homes. Also, having worked in the fashion industry in London at 18 years old, I was exposed to beautiful fabrics and the importance of design, and interior design was a natural progression.
Define your signature style? We approach each design project uniquely. Each is original to that particular client so the styles can be quite diverse. My own signature style I would describe as characterful and timeless. There’s a lot of mixing and layering of colour and texture, modern and vintage pieces, as well as fabrics that speak to me. What elements do you always try to include in your interior design? I always start with the initial layout of the space. Looking at form, function, where the windows are, where is the light or lack of, and what redeeming architectural elements exist there. And how I can turn an ordinary space into a beautiful one. I always try to include layering of textures, fabrics, wallpapers and task lighting.
