CELEBRATING WOMEN

HEREʼS TO THE INSPIRING WOMEN IN HOME DÉCOR, DESIGN & BUILDING

CELEBRATING WOMEN

Building legacies one home at a time

T

Colleen Larsen explores the dynamics that women bring to the home décor and design industry

here is something incredibly powerful about the way women influence the home décor and design industry. In many ways, women do not simply design spaces, they shape environments that influence how people feel, live, connect and experience everyday life. Over the years, I have often reflected on how differently men and women sometimes approach products, environments and customer experience. In my book, Gender Matters, a Practical Response to the Slippery Ladder, I shared the story of IKEA. Men had built the company into a substantial global business, but one of the major shifts in its growth came when women brought a different perspective to understanding the customer journey. Women recognised that many consumers, particularly women furnishing homes, wanted to touch, feel and experience furniture before making purchasing decisions. The move towards physical retail spaces changed the business dramatically. For me, that story has always represented the real power of diversity in business. It was never about men versus women. It was about bringing different lived experiences and perspectives together to better understand human behaviour. I believe the home décor and design industry reflects this beautifully. Women often bring a deeper understanding of how spaces are actually lived in. While aesthetics matter, there is usually another layer being considered: warmth, functionality, flow, comfort, emotion and how people move through a space in their daily lives. Particularly in recent years, homes have evolved into far more than places we return to at night. They have become

172 AUGUST 2026

workspaces, places of healing, gathering places and environments where people seek calm in increasingly busy lives. Women designers seem to instinctively understand this shift. South Africa has also seen remarkable women shape the industry. Carrol Boyes is a powerful example of someone who transformed everyday homeware into something deeply emotional, artistic and globally recognised. She understood that design is not only about function, but also about experience and connection. What excites me most is that women are increasingly leading the industry not only creatively, but entrepreneurially. They are building brands, supporting local craftsmanship, mentoring emerging talent and helping create spaces that feel intentional and deeply human. The future of home décor and design will not only be about what spaces look like. It will increasingly be about how spaces make people feel. In many ways, women are helping lead that evolution, alongside men, through the strength of different perspectives working together. colleen@businessengage.co.za www.businessengage.africa Colleen Larsen is the founder and CE of Business Engage Association NPC, a pan-African business platform working with organisations across Africa to embed gender mainstreaming into leadership and business strategy. With more than 20 years of experience working alongside corporate leaders, Larsen is a recognised thought leader and author on the topic. Her work focuses on leadership, human behaviour, inclusion and creating sustainable impact through collaboration and diverse perspectives.

174 AUGUST 2026

How do you celebrate other women in the home industry? Definitely through collaboration and by celebrating them in all that they do whenever we can. Who or what has been your inspiration throughout your life? Family and fashion – the spark behind our story. This business started because a father believed in the dreams of his daughter. It carries on because the next generation believes in it, too. The words “dress up” and “show up” have defined us, and that is what we do. It’s what home does for us all, so why not make it delectably beautiful?

What is your life affirmation that you live by daily? Every day, we try to live with passion, obsession and grit. In the words of Maya Angelou: “My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humour and some style.” This captures our day-to-day in the most apt and poetic way. What is the one book that you recommend every woman needs to read? Year of Yes by Shonda Rhimes. As women, we can do anything if we give ourselves the permission to fly and fully experience our big, beautiful lives in all its realms. If your life were a movie title, what would it be? Blueprints & Bold Moves! What’s the one thing that makes you get out of bed in the morning? For us, every day is a new opportunity to craft the perfect space, impactfully curated for a new, happy client who will enjoy their dream home for many memorable years to come. A woman to me is … the connector between everyone and everything that truly matters. A woman is brave, she gives grace, she nurtures and creates.

Alexandra Home Edit Glass and aluminium products, and garage doors

ELIZABETH KROPF

Owner

With a focus on innovation, craftsmanship and exceptional service, Alexandra Home Edit (AHE) transforms spaces through frameless glass systems, luxury entrances, balustrades, cladding and custom architectural features.

What do you love about your profession? The fact that we get to make our clients’ homes more beautiful with our craftsmanship. What legacy would you like to leave in the industry? I would like to make an impact by creating an elite, high-end brand that is known to offer great craftsmanship while being a reputable, established business. My biggest goal is service, to leave a lasting impact once we are done with a project. How do you celebrate other women in the home industry? It is amazing to see other woman in my industry in their roles,

because I personally know how much harder we have to work to be respected in this industry and to build technical trust. As a young business owner, it is always personal, and I always make it my goal to support other women in business, not only in the home industry, but also in all industries. What is the one book that you recommend every woman needs to read? I am not a big reader; I follow podcasts and watch a lot of videos of successful entrepreneurs, such as Brian Luebben and his wife Nathalia Lopez who host the podcast Action Academy. Their relationship reminds me of the relationship my husband and I share – husband and wife as well as business partners. I also follow Leila Hormozi and her podcast Build with Hormozi, which is also a business-related podcast in collaboration with her husband. Through the podcasts, I learn the rawness of closing deals, making mistakes and handling big corporate disputes and challenges in every aspect. A woman to me is … superwoman. We are so gifted in all the challenges we face. We are capable of anything. We are built for emotional support and built to run companies. We are built to adapt, to dream big, be strong and succeed. ETRESIA JORDAAN

Owner and director CreateSpace Architects and Design Studio offers full architectural services from inception (stage 1) to close-out (stage 6), including concept design, technical documentation and contract administration.

How do you celebrate other women in the home industry? I celebrate women by amplifying their voices, sharing their work and creating opportunities for collaboration rather than competition. Whether it’s a word of encouragement, a referral, or simply holding space for their ideas.

What is your life affirmation that you live by daily? Create with purpose, lead with kindness, and trust the process. What is the one book that you recommend every woman needs to read? The Gifts of Imperfection by Brené Brown. It’s a powerful reminder that authenticity is strength, that vulnerability is courage. What’s the one thing that makes you get out of bed in the morning? Each day holds the potential to shape something better than the day before. A woman to me is … strength wrapped in grace. She is a creator, a nurturer, a strategist and a force of quiet power. What do you love about your profession? I love the creative aspect of interior design and the opportunity to apply the skills and knowledge I have gained throughout my career. I find great fulfilment in creating environments that are both beautiful and deeply personal to the people who use them. What legacy would you like to leave in the industry? I would like to be remembered for creating authentic, timeless interiors that enrich people’s lives, but more importantly, for building meaningful relationships and mentoring others along the way. What do you love about your profession? For me, being a window treatment specialist is about more than just measuring and installing. We transform people’s lives by making a house feel like a home. How do you celebrate other women in the home industry? If there is one thing we excel at, it is referrals and collaboration. We believe in uplifting one another within the interior design industry. There is always room for all of us to succeed; let’s choose connection over competition and network together. Who or what has been your inspiration throughout your life? Selma Zaifoglu Co-owner and lead architect

Linear Concepts creates bespoke European kitchens and luxury interiors, defining contemporary living through world-class architectural innovation and signature designs.

What do you love about your profession? I love the delicate art of orchestrating spaces. To me, a kitchen isn’t just a service area; it is a permanent structure and the heart of the home. There is immense joy in capturing the point where cold architectural rigour meets the comforting invitation of a home – what we call the “warm modern”. Turning raw spatial concepts into refined environments that connect deeply with a client’s everyday soul is incredibly fulfilling. What legacy would you like to leave in the industry? I want to leave a legacy of uncompromising spatial perfection and timelessness. I hope to be remembered for pushing the boundaries of traditional design by bringing a distinct European heritage into contemporary living, proving that true luxury is found in the hidden details that most never see, but everyone feels.

How do you celebrate other women in the home industry? By championing precision, vision and raw talent over convention. The internal architecture and manufacturing fields have historically been male-dominated, so I celebrate women by ensuring our studio provides an empowered space where female designers and architects can confidently express bold distinctions, shatter design boundaries and lead major structural narratives. SUZETTE HAMMER

CEO

SBE Africa creates bespoke luxury residences and developments, uniting international expertise with African context to deliver timeless, highly detailed homes.

What legacy would you like to leave in the industry? That we raised the standard for what a South African luxury home can be. Not imported ideas, but African innovation – homes that respond to our climate, our light, our way of entertaining. If SBE Africa is remembered for timeless design and uncompromising detail, I’ve done my job. How do you celebrate other women in the home industry? By collaborating intentionally. I live my life in service, and I find my deepest happiness in leaving people better off than I found them – whether it’s a client, a colleague or a stranger. What is the one book that you recommend every woman needs to read? I’m writing my own. It’s about humble beginnings in a mining town, surviving multiple recessions, 40 years of architecture, raising children, navigating marriages and building a global firm from a drawing board. No filters. My book will be unique because it covers the real stuff – hardship, work, love and the pencil lines that held it all together. Until mine’s published, read the story you’re living. It’s the most important one! If your life were a movie title, what would it be? Site Specific – because every great home, and every meaningful life, is a response to its unique context. A woman to me is … the client who signs off the final plans. She’s discerning, decisive and deeply invested in how her family lives. With a foot in the construction arm of the design industry, Beautiful Spaces with Beulah focuses on renovations and new builds, and offers client-centric project management, overseeing projects from concept to handover.

What do you love about your profession? The one thing that stands out is that I get to not only transform spaces, but lives as well. We help actualise people’s dreams by taking an idea and building it brick by brick until it is realised. It is a process that brings joy to my clients and fulfilment to me as a designer. How do you celebrate other women in the home industry? I firmly believe there’s no better celebration of another woman than a referral, and when I have the opportunity, I always refer women-owned businesses, from service providers to manufacturers. Championing means not only celebrating together, but also elevating one another. Who or what has been your inspiration throughout your life? My grandmother, who taught us prayer and that you can use the gifts you have to make a living. And my mother, who taught me resilience, in that no matter how many times you fall, you can always get back up bigger and better. What is your life affirmation that you live by daily? With faith and focus, you can do the impossible. A woman to me is … one who gives life: to her family, to those around her, and to all the spaces she occupies. CONTACT: 060 997 0564 www.bswithbeulah.co.za IG: @bswithbeulah

What do you love about your profession? It’s incredibly satisfying to match a client with a special antique or vintage item that they thought they would never find. Watching the transformation of someone’s home, using our exclusive pieces, is very rewarding. Sourcing pieces with architectural interest from Europe and locally is also an exciting process. What legacy would you like to leave in the industry? I would love to build up the widest selection of vintage and antique doors in the country. I believe I’m continuing the legacy of my late father and brother. I think they would have loved to witness our business, which they started 60 years ago, expand and grow the way it has over the past few years. They left me a solid base on which to build beautiful stock. Who or what has been your inspiration throughout your life? My parents and twin brothers have been my inspiration throughout my life. They have always instilled a strong work ethic and the notion of not being afraid to work hard. We grew up with a very strong family connection and being able to rely 100% on each other. A woman to me is … entrepreneurial, strong, resilient and hard-working. South African women, in particular, deserve to be recognised for all the daily challenges that they face. Maldini curates exclusive Italian brands, including Porada, Cattelan Italia and Qeeboo, all selected for how they live in contemporary and luxury Southern African spaces.

What do you love about your profession? Furniture is one of the few things we interact with every single day. Good furniture is never just about filling a space. It shapes how people gather, work, relax and experience their homes and workspaces every day. Great interiors are rarely defined by one spectacular item; they’re built through several considered decisions. I love helping clients see possibilities they may not have considered and guiding them towards choices they will still appreciate years later. How do you celebrate other women in the home industry? I believe in sharing knowledge, experience and opportunities. At Maldini, we have a team of women who work closely with our clients every day, and creating an environment where they can develop confidence, expertise and their own point of view is important to me. More broadly, I believe the industry is stronger when women champion one another’s work and celebrate each other’s successes. What is the one book that you recommend every woman needs to read? Founder and creative director

Professional architect and director

SV Interiors specialises in bespoke residential and commercial interior design, and creates timeless, functional spaces tailored to each client. Each project showcases luxuriously designed and beautiful interiors.

What legacy would you like to leave in the industry? One of creating beautiful spaces that genuinely improve how people live, while inspiring other women to believe they can build successful businesses in a traditionally male-dominated industry. I hope to be remembered not only for my projects, but also for the relationships I built, the integrity with which I worked, and the confidence I helped instil in both my clients and fellow women in the business. If I can leave the industry a little more inspired, supportive and empowered than I found it, I would consider that a success. What is the one book that you recommend every woman needs to read? You Are a Badass at Making Money by Jen Sincero. It completely shifted the way I thought about success, self-worth and the limiting beliefs we often place on ourselves. A woman to me is … kindness, grace and strength all in one. She is soft yet resilient, compassionate yet courageous, and capable of achieving extraordinary things while carrying more than the world often sees. I believe one of the greatest misconceptions about women is that we always have to be strong. True strength is also found in vulnerability, authenticity and allowing ourselves to be soft. A woman has the unique ability to nurture, create, inspire, lead and love deeply, and that balance of strength and softness is what makes her truly beautiful.
