Persistent challenges
The challenges are often practical and invisibleto thoseoutside the classroom.
Many schools still lack basic lab equipment, internetaccess, oreven reliableelectricity, makinghandson science nearly impossible.
We find that pupils often struggle to connect abstract STEMI (science, technology, engineering, mathematics and innovation)concepts to the realworld,meaning thatmathsand science can feel irrelevant to them.
Gender dynamics also remain a barrier. Girls arestill subtly steered away from STEMI careers, either due tostereotypes,a lackofrolemodels,or familyand culturalexpectations.
We haveto facethe question aboutwhetherpupils arebeingpreparedtoinnovate andthriveina rapidly changing economy.
Ourgoalis tohelpteachers,families andthe pupilsthemselves un-
derstand how these subjects foster problem-solvingand criticalthinking, andhow theycan connectto an interesting and exciting future career.Wealso wantthemtoexperience howmuch funSTEMI subjects can be.

TheNelson MandelaBayScience and Technology Centreexists to bridge the gapsin STEMI education and access in Nelson Mandela Bay. Through outreachprogrammes andworkshops,we bringSTEMIeducationdirectly tounderserved schools.We wantto createspaces where pupils can experiment, where theycanask questionsandseethe relevanceofmaths andsciencein their daily lives.
