An adventurer’s letter to his son, as he leaves for his first year of college.
No one voted for dirty air and water. The Trump administration is accelerating efforts to dismantle our bedrock environmental laws and protections. From clean air and water to public lands and climate action, the consequences of these decisions are showing up across the South, in the places we live, and the lives we lead. Here at SELC, we’re fighting back — in the courtroom, the halls of government, and in our communities. Because environmental protections aren’t political — they’re fundamental.

MAKING SPACE FOR EVERY PACE A Virginia-based group gravel ride with a relaxed vibe breaks down biking barriers and makes a reluctant rider feel welcome. BY ANNE LASSERE
WHEN A FRIEND INVITED ME to join a group ride on the mountainous backroads of Albemarle County in central Virginia, my first reaction was cold apprehension. I was new to gravel biking. I didn’t know the mysterious rules about riding in a peloton. What if I couldn’t keep up? I didn’t want to admit that this ride would be the longest mileage I’d ever accomplished on a bike. Then I showed up. People were milling about their cars in the parking lot, pumping up tires and securing their helmets. The first thing I noticed was that everyone was smiling. The vibe was playful and relaxed. My apprehension started to drain away when somebody I’d never met before
gave me a high five. “Welcome,” they said. That person was John Gulley, one of the organizers of Albemarle Gravel and Wine (affectionately known as AGW), the group that brought us all together. Every component on John’s bike—from the frame to the stem to the cogs and even the tires—was purple. When we started rolling, John was up for any adventure his fellow riders suggested. He would encourage us in his southern drawl with the most incredible food-centric idioms: “let’s blaze biscuits,” “you bring the sauce,” and “that’s gravy.” When we got rolling, I was immediately fortified by the easy conversation with other riders. We cycled past stunning views of
pastures, horse farms, and peach orchards in full bloom. I barely noticed the miles. My attention was trained instead on the wind on my face, the rush of leaning into a corner. By the end of the ride, I knew I’d come away with new friends. I’m not the only cyclist who’s found group rides to be intimidating. A lot of people hold back from the fear of not being able to keep up, or not fitting in, or not looking the part. But with AGW, you don’t have to show up in a cycling kit with perfectly matching spandex. Show up in jeans, show up in costume, it doesn’t matter— just come as you are. Now, after years of cycling, eventually working in a bike shop, and leading group rides myself, I
can confidently say that the AGW rides are the much-needed answer to a void that tends to form in the cycling world. When you buy your first bike, who do you ride with? Where do you go? These questions become a barrier to entry, especially when most group rides out there are geared toward experienced riders and populated with an already tight-knit group. AGW is a great way to learn the local routes and meet fellow riders without any pressure to perform. Their goal is something they call joy equity, defined as equal opportunity at joy in riding. Joy equity is not realized by helping people ride the same pace, but by creating the circumstances that allow all riders an equal opportunity

to enjoy the ride. It’s a feeling of happiness resulting from doing your own thing. Joy equity. That’s something worth striving for. And it’s working. AGW has caught fire and expanded through word-ofmouth. Their weekly summertime rides, about twenty miles long, host as many as fifty people. This big group tends to organically split up into smaller ones after it gets rolling, lending to a more intimate and conversational experience that ends with a toast at one of the local venues. On these rides, you’re not just an adult who goes to work every day, runs errands, drops your kids off at school. You have the freedom to ditch your responsibilities and embrace new perspectives. In short, you’re just there to have fun. Today, I’m a big fan of group rides. AGW helped me get over my fear of not fitting in. I went from
feeling wobbly on the drop bars to a confident, competitive rider. The best part is all the friends I’ve made. An amazing community is on offer for anyone who saddles up. Plus, Albemarle County is a picturesque setting for unique outdoor adventures—especially when they come with a little pinky’s-up glam, like a sparkling Blanc de Blanc in a crystal glass. On a recent ride with AGW, a descent down a gravel road led right to the doorstep of Stone Mountain Vineyards. I sat at a table surrounded by friends in bike helmets enjoying a stunning view of the Blue Ridge stretched out behind us. We all raised our glasses to being there, despite the fact that it was a cold day, some of us felt a bit out of shape, and we probably all had chores that needed attention. We chose to be there because, quite simply, the shared experience brought us joy.

And the transition from summer to fall brings peak riding conditions and colorful eye candy. Here, we help you make the most of the seasonal shift by spotlighting what’s new or about to improve at some of the Blue Ridge’s best bike parks and riding areas.

Its five upper trails have gotten a near total refresher, with added features and welcome enhancements that wowed this writer on a recent visit. A newly installed alpine coaster, expanded indoor-outdoor waterpark, and windowlined slopeside bar provide post-ride entertainment options for families and solo riders alike. The resort’s famed Western Slope XC area is also poised for improvements. The first phase of a comprehensive new trail plan launched earlier this year and boasts additions like new

Virginia mountain bikers also revere this Basye outpost near the border of West Virginia as a progression-minded
gem. Its 13 lift-served trails were designed by—and get yearly upgrades from—the Gravity Logic team and are chock full of features like wall rides, North Shore drops, skinnies, tabletops, and big berms. Dedicated blue, black, and doubleblack jump lines offer white-knuckle thrills for everyone from young learners to intermediates and elitelevel experts. The pedal-powered excitement got a boost this year with seven newly curated XC singletrack, gravel, and road loops that begin and end at or near the resort. The entries span around 150 miles of riding and bring incredible scenery in the Alleghany Mountains and George Washington National Forest. They combine with other resort offerings—like luxury cabins, a ridgeline golf course, or swimming

Hatley Pointe Mountain Resort
The wholly overhauled, upscaled, and recently renamed resort (formerly Wolf Ridge) just got a new bike park. Construction began in 2025 and was completed this past August. The system features a dozen routes crafted by Asheville-based Elevated Trail Design, which is owned by renowned veteran builder, Peter Mills. Contra to many lift-served parks, rides all begin at the summit. That lets novices or cruise-oriented pedalers catch 700 feet of vert on a breezy, 1.24-mile downhill green. A pair of less demanding blues bring ample skills-building opportunities. A quintet of challenging black and double-black diamonds are peppered with features like cannon jumps, road gaps, rock spines, and wooden drops. At just over 30 miles from downtown Asheville, the park is an exciting draw for residents and visitors alike. hatleypointe.com

Ride Rock Creek Mountain Bike Park
Pro downhiller and multi-time National Champion, Neko Mulally, co-founded this 300-acre MTB haven in late 2022—and the shuttle-served park has quickly gained legend status among elite gravity riders. It sits on the eastern border of acclaimed XC riding hub, Dupont State Recreational Forest, about 20 miles from the funky mountain town of Brevard. The park doubles as a training ground for Mulally’s Frameworks Bicycles Union Cycliste Internationale World Cup racing team and has hosted a slew of pro events, including 2024’s USA Cycling National Downhill Championships. As the accolades hint, Rock Creek is designed for ambitious learners and experts. Best of all, expansions have come quickly: Five new trails have been added since 2024 alone and brought total offerings to an even dozen. Warm up with a pair of aggressive greens— one smooth and flowy, the other tight and technical—that drop 700 feet over the course of about a half-mile. Things get gnarlier from there, with three blues, four blacks, and a purposefully

raw and unkept double-black with beastly features that will test even the most seasoned riders. A pair of progressive freestyle routes round out the action. riderockcreek.com
Rocky Knob Mountain Bike Park
High Country riders treasure this 185-plus acre park on the eastern outskirts of Boone. It features 11 miles of twisty singletrack that mingles rugged rock garden and short stretches of flowy downhill, along with four skills parks and an awesome pump track that got some upgrades in 2024. Volunteers from Boone Area Cyclists (boonearecyclists.org) have more park beta, as they keep many of the trails maintained.
TENNESSEE
WildSide Adventure Park
The Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge area got yet another powerful draw for mountain bikers when this 900acre, $20 million park opened in July of 2024. The adventure resort is the brainchild of the developers behind Gatlinburg’s popular, but more family-oriented mountaintop

theme park, Anakeesta. Build teams have been hard at work, already bringing Wildside’s tally of MTB trails to two-dozen—and many more are in the pipeline. A shuttle ferries riders up a mile-long gravel access road to a near2,500-foot ridge with soaring views of the surrounding mountains. An impressive fleet of nine progressiveminded greens provide plenty of runway for newbies and learners to level-up. But WildSide’s eleven blues and blacks are what shines. Wide, butter-smooth trails blaze across the mountainside’s steep slopes and brim with a perma-grin inducing array of tabletops, rollable doubles, optional wooden drops, gaps, rock bridges, and monster berms. A trio of double-black technical routes rollercoaster through forests of magical rhododendron at breakneck pace, and last but not least is a threeline jump park.
to one of southwest PA’s biggest state parks. Ohiopyle’s 20,500 acres presently hold about 80 miles of trails—25 of which were hand-built by an eponymous bike club and are dedicated to mountain biking. The park is also home to a sizable chunk of the Great Allegheny Passage bikepacking route. The new project is being spearheaded by the Pennsylvania Environmental Council and Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. They’ve tapped Kay Linn Enterprises—a Boulder, Colorado, design and build firm responsible for the award-winning Jakes Rocks trail system in the Alleghany National Forest—to lead the effort. Enhanced connectors are expected to break ground in early September, followed by a singletrack network wrapped around 2,934-foot Sugarloaf Knob. ohiopyle.org

Brad Smith and his wife Alys has brought a flood of new outdoor rec infrastructure around the state. And mountain biking has seen more love than any other activity. These days, it's easy for kids to think vegetables come from the grocery store and eggs magically appear in a carton. At Breath of Dawn, they can spend a weekend learning otherwise. Perched on 35 acres overlooking Clinch Mountain, the educational homestead invites families to experience the rhythms of life on a working farm. “I think people are craving a slower pace,” says proprietor Jessica Monroe. “We've become so accustomed to notifications, schedules, and constant stimulation that quiet has become a luxury.”
WHAT TO DO: Roll up your sleeves for a guided farm tour, where families can learn the basics of sustainable living. If you're ready to venture farther afield, tackle the Great Channels of Virginia, a 6.6-mile hike leading to a maze of towering sandstone crevices. WHERE TO EAT: Grab dinner at The Heritage Table, a kitchen in nearby Nickelsville serving rotating comfort-food specials like beef stroganoff and chicken Parmesan. In most places, telling your kids to put their phones away sparks a debate. In Green Bank, it's just the rules. Home to the world's largest fully steerable radio telescope, this tiny West Virginia town sits inside the National Radio Quiet Zone, where cell service, Wi-Fi, and other radio signals are heavily restricted to protect groundbreaking scientific research. The result? One of the quietest places in America. “Visitors really are unplugged,” says Jill Malusky, spokesperson for the U.S. National Science Foundation Green Bank Observatory. “They can pay attention to nature and each other while exploring.”

FEEL THE FLOW IN LAUREL HIGHLANDS, PA
From smooth rail trails to rolling mountain-bike routes, the Laurel Highlands offers cyclists plenty of ways to explore Pennsylvania’s scenic mountains, rivers and small towns. Whether you’re looking for a relaxed day on the trail or a more challenging ride, two destinations stand out: the Great Allegheny Passage (GAP) and the trails around Quemahoning Reservoir.
MILES OF SCENIC RIDING
The Great Allegheny Passage is the region’s signature rail trail, and for good reason. Stretching 150 miles between Pittsburgh and Cumberland, Maryland, the trail includes nearly 100 miles through the Laurel Highlands. Following former railroad corridors, the mostly gentle route offers a scenic way to experience the region without the steep grades of traditional mountain riding. The GAP was the first inductee into the Rails to Trails Hall of Fame and is frequently recognized among the country’s top rail trails. It has also become a national model for how trails can connect communities and transform former industrial corridors into destinations for outdoor recreation. For mountain bikers, the Quemahoning Trails provide another reason to put the Laurel Highlands on two wheels. The trail system winds around Quemahoning Reservoir, with 40 miles of riding ranging from beginnerfriendly terrain to more challenging routes. Seventeen miles of beginner-level trails have been open for a decade, featuring about 1,386 feet of elevation change. In 2026, another 23 miles opened for intermediate and experienced riders, expanding the area’s options for cyclists looking to test their skills.
MAKE OHIOPYLE YOUR BASECAMP
Few places combine cycling and adventure quite like Ohiopyle State Park. At more than 20,000 acres, it’s Pennsylvania’s largest state park and features more than 30 miles of biking trails, with terrain suited to beginner and intermediate riders. The park also provides easy access to the GAP, making it possible to combine mountain biking and rail-trail riding in the same getaway. And when the bike is parked, the adventure doesn’t have to stop. Ohiopyle is a hub for rafting, kayaking and canoeing on the Youghiogheny River, along with fishing, rock climbing and hiking on the 70-mile Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail. Nearby attractions such as Fallingwater and family-friendly destinations including Jellystone Park Mill Run and Living Treasures Animal Park add even more ways to fill a weekend.
REFEUL AND RESET
After a day on the trails, refuel at Falls City Restaurant & Pub, Ohiopyle Coffee Company or Twisted Spoke Cafe, or catch an event at Timber Rock Amphitheater. Whether you’re cruising along a historic rail corridor or tackling a new mountain-bike route, the Laurel Highlands makes it easy to turn a ride into a full weekend of adventure.
RIDE, THEN RAFT
Local outfitters like Laurel Highlands River Tours and Outdoor Center, Ohiopyle Trading Post and River Tours, White Water Adventurers, and Wilderness Voyageurs can get you on the trail or out on the water with bike rentals and paddling excursions!

MOUNTAIN BIKING AND OUTDOOR ADVENTURE IN MCDOWELL COUNTY, NC
There’s a reason more mountain bikers are putting Old Fort on their weekend ride list. For riders who enjoy discovering destinations before everyone else does, McDowell County offers something special: a trail town that’s still writing its story. Situated where the Blue Ridge Mountains meet Pisgah National Forest, Old Fort has become one of the Southeast’s fastest-rising cycling destinations. Scenic road rides, beginnerfriendly trails and technical terrain offer something for every skill level, and more than enough reasons to return.
THE MAKING OF A TRAIL TOWN
The growing Old Fort Gateway Trail System welcomes beginners to experienced riders alike. Classics like Kitsuma Trail and Heartbreak Ridge continue to challenge seasoned mountain bikers, while Point Lookout rewards road cyclists with sweeping Blue Ridge views. Momentum continues to build in Old Fort, where ongoing trail development is transforming the community into one of the Southeast’s premier biking destinations. Among the most anticipated additions is a planned shuttle-accessed experience connecting the Blue Ridge Parkway to downtown Old Fort with a 4,200-foot vertical descent, believed to be the largest of its kind east of the Rockies. Riders across the country are taking notice. And as the community continues to rebuild following Hurricane Helene, the vision is moving forward. During a recent visit, mountain biking content creator Jonathan Emery of
ProjectNortheast MTB showcased Old Fort’s evolving trail network, stunning scenery and authentic trail town atmospheres to thousands of YouTube viewers. With a start down Kitsuma, then up and over the Bernard Mountain Trail for another “awesome ultra flowy descent” into downtown Old Fort, he demonstrated what many riders discover after a single visit: McDowell County isn’t just building great trails. It’s building a mountain biking community. Foothills Watershed offers beginnerfriendly trails and pump tracks, but it isn’t just for riders. Live music, bluegrass jams, honky tonk dance parties and good food make it a destination all its own.
THE ADVENTURE NEVER ENDS
The adventure doesn’t end when the ride is over. Hike to waterfalls, paddle nearby rivers, cast a line in mountain streams or simply explore Pisgah National Forest. Refuel in downtown Old Fort or nearby
Marion, where locally owned restaurants, breweries and coffee shops welcome hungry riders. Grab a pint at Whaley Farm Brewery or Hillman Beer before planning tomorrow’s ride. Extend your adventure with an overnight stay at Hey Old Friend, a thoughtfully restored collection of cabins just steps from downtown Old Fort. For groups, the new Copper Ridge Cabins offers 10 cabins on a stunning mountain ridge just steps from bike trails and hiking. Settle in to luxury glamping at Wunderland Resort and Campground where forest villas and a spring-fed freshwater pond offer respite after the ride. Off the bike, discover Catawba Falls just outside downtown Old Fort; explore the Mountain Gateway Museum, visit the Arrowhead Monument or stop in at B Side Bakery & Books or Seeker Coffee. Around here, the ride doesn’t end at the trailhead. It continues downtown, around the fire pit and into plans for the next trip back. In McDowell County, the best rides may still be ahead. TUNE UP AND ROLL OUT
Need a tune-up before hitting the trail? Old Fort Bike Shop has you covered. Looking to maximize your downhill? Mountain Top Shuttles helps riders spend more time descending and less time climbing.

A RIDE AT THE CENTER OF IT ALL IN ASHLAND, VA
In Ashland, Virginia, the adventure starts at the center. Known as the “Center of the Universe,” this charming town offers an ideal home base for exploring by bike, with scenic trails, historic streets, public art, local restaurants, and plenty of reasons to linger after the ride. And with the Fall Line Trail connecting directly to downtown, Ashland is becoming an increasingly important stop along the region’s growing network of cycling routes. Ashland sits at the intersection of U.S. Bike Route 1 and Route 76, while the East Coast Greenway also passes through town, making it a natural destination for cyclists traveling through Virginia. Whether you’re looking for a leisurely family ride, a longer trail adventure, or a day spent exploring downtown on two wheels, Ashland makes it easy to center your fun around the bike.
RIDE THE FALL LINE
The centerpiece of Ashland’s cycling experience is the Fall Line Trail, a developing regional trail system connecting communities across Central Virginia. In Ashland, the trail offers cyclists and pedestrians a dedicated and accessible route into the heart of town, providing an easy way to combine outdoor recreation with shopping, dining, history, and entertainment. Ashland is also home to mile marker zero, where the Fall Line Trail Extension begins downtown and leads toward The Hub, a functional-art sculpture and gathering point that marks the trail’s connection to the community. The project represents more than a place to start or finish a ride. It reflects Ashland’s efforts to make outdoor recreation part of its downtown experience and economic future. For cyclists, that means the trail can be more than a standalone ride. Park the car, hop on the bike, and make your way through town, stopping along the way for coffee, lunch, shopping, public art, or a little train watching.

Several restaurants including Origin, Caboose, Iron Horse, Ash & Olive, New Cross Bros., Suzanne’s and HCI offer outdoor seating and patios, making it easy to refuel outside after a day on the trail. You don’t have to stay in the saddle all day to experience Ashland’s outdoors. The town offers a variety of self-guided, and easily accessible experiences that make it easy to explore at your own pace. Art lovers can follow the Art in Orbit tour or seek out Ashland’s murals and public art installations throughout town. These routes offer a different way to discover the community, turning a walk downtown into an informal art tour. The Ashland Farmer’s Market, held May through October, is another seasonal stop for visitors looking to experience local flavors and community. Depending on the timing of your trip, you may also catch one of Ashland’s signature events, including Ashland 4th Fridays, when downtown comes alive with food, entertainment, and activities. Families can build an entire day around Ashland’s attractions, from train watching and public art to seasonal events such as Train Day, Strawberry Faire, Light Up Tracks, and the Holiday Parade. And for those traveling with four-legged companions, Ashland is also welcoming to
dogs. The town’s dog-friendly offerings make it easy to include the whole family in a weekend getaway.
FROM CYCLING TO LOCAL CULTURE
Ashland’s character extends beyond its trails. Follow the Arts & Antiques Trail to discover local shops and galleries, or explore the town’s food scene through Ashland Eats. Catch a performance or movie at the historic Ashland Theatre, or visit the campus of Randolph-Macon College, where visitors can experience the energy of a small college town. There’s also Secretariat, the legendary racehorse whose connection to Virginia adds another layer to Ashland’s history and culture.
CENTER YOUR FUN
The appeal of biking in Ashland is ultimately about more than the ride. It’s about what happens when the trail meets downtown. With the Fall Line Trail extending into the community, major regional cycling routes passing through town, and a growing collection of outdoor, cultural, and culinary experiences nearby, Ashland offers cyclists a chance to slow down and explore. Ride a section of trail, grab lunch on a patio, browse local shops, watch a train roll through town, or follow a self-guided art tour before heading home. Ashland’s Center Your Fun campaign captures that spirit: Put yourself at the
center of the experience and discover how much adventure, culture, and community can fit into one small Virginia town. For upcoming events, local favorites, self-guided tours, and ideas for planning your visit, explore VisitAshlandVA.com and sign up for the monthly Center Your Fun tourism newsletter. Whether you’re cycling down a trail, walking downtown, or exploring by car, Ashland makes it easy to center your next adventure here. PLAN YOUR VISIT
The Visit Ashland app makes exploring easy with self-guided tours and recommendations for places to eat, shop, and stay, helping cyclists turn a ride into a full day of adventure.

LONG BEFORE SATELLITES, drones, and wildfire cameras, protecting Appalachia's forests often came down to one person in one lonely tower, scanning the horizon for the first curl of smoke. Today, those same lookouts have traded fire finders for weekend warriors chasing panoramic views. Whether you prefer lungburning climbs or quick walks with big rewards, these six Appalachian fire towers are worth adding to your hiking bucket list.
Wesser Bald Fire Tower Franklin, N.C.
Wesser Bald isn't much of a bald anymore. Over the years, hardwoods have reclaimed the summit, replacing open skies with a canopy of trees. Thankfully, the historic fire tower still offers a way above them. To reach the summit, follow the iconic white blazes of the
Appalachian Trail from Tellico Gap. The 2.8-mile round-trip hike climbs at a comfortable grade, making Wesser Bald one of the region's best view-to-mileage hikes. At the top, a 30-foot steel staircase leads to Wesser Bald's observation deck, overlooking the Great Smoky Mountains, the Great Balsams, and Nantahala National Forest. On clear days, you can even spot Fontana Lake shimmering nearly 3,000 feet below. Distance: 2.8 miles round trip Elevation Gain: 750 feet Tower Trivia: Built in the 1930s, Wesser Bald's fire tower served as a U.S. Forest Service lookout until it was retired in the 1960s. After the enclosed cab burned down, the remaining 30-foot steel frame was topped with a wooden observation deck in the 1990s, giving the historic tower a second life.

High Knob Fire Tower George Washington National Forest, Va.
If you're hoping to visit a castle in the Shenandoah Valley, High Knob has you covered. Completed in 1940 by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), this rugged stone lookout rises above the forest like a miniature fortress, a striking departure from the steel fire towers scattered across Appalachia. Even better, its wraparound catwalk offers sweeping 360-degree views of the George Washington National Forest, including Spruce Knob, Shenandoah Mountain, and Switzer Dam.

Of course, you'll have to earn your royal views. From Route 33, follow the yellow-blazed High Knob Trail for a 2.5-mile round-trip hike, climbing 643 feet through the forest before one final, steep push to the summit. Distance: 2.5 miles round trip Elevation Gain: 643 feet Tower Trivia: Bring binoculars. High Knob is a favorite perch for birders, with peregrine falcons, hawks, migratory songbirds, and other rare species regularly spotted from the tower.

Thorny Mountain Fire Tower Seneca State Forest, W.Va.
Skip the Comfort Inn. Thorny Mountain Fire Tower offers something far more memorable: the chance to spend the night in a historic fire lookout. For more than 90 years, Thorny Mountain Fire Tower has watched over Seneca State Forest. Originally constructed to help fire rangers spot smoke across the Greenbrier Valley, today it's one of the few fire towers in Appalachia that welcomes overnight guests. While there's no electricity, plumbing, or Wi-Fi, the wraparound
views more than make up for the missing amenities. To get there, follow the blueblazed Thorny Creek Trail before connecting with the orange-blazed Fire Tower Trail for a 2.4-mile loop. The route follows Seneca Lake before tackling a steep final climb to the summit, where 69 steps lead to sweeping 360-degree views. Distance: 2.4-mile loop Elevation Gain: 583 feet Tower Trivia: Reservations to stay overnight in Thorny Mountain Fire Tower often book up a year in advance, so plan well ahead if sleeping among the treetops is on your bucket list.

Fryingpan Mountain Lookout Tower has been cooking up adventure since 1941, when U.S. Forest Service fire watchers climbed its steel stairs to scan the surrounding mountains for smoke. RADFORD UNIVERSITY REPEATS WIN AS BRO’S TOP ADVENTURE COLLEGE BY CONNOR RUSSELL
Editor’s Note: For the second year in a row, Radford University was voted the region’s Top Adventure College by the readers of Blue Ridge Outdoors. Set in the foothills of the Blue Ridge in southwest Virginia, Radford’s location gives students access to a range of adventures, including paddling on the New River and networks of nearby hiking trails, all within miles of a charming downtown. The school also offers an impressive amount of outdoor programming for students. In the following essay, Connor Russell, Radford’s assistant director of Outdoor Programs, explains how the school’s outdoor programs shaped his college experience, and how he’s now trying to provide the same for current students. Before I came to Radford as a student in the fall of 2016, I was not an “outdoorsy” person. The joke I tell people is that the extent of my outdoor experience in my youth was staying at a KOA once with my family on a camping trip, where I played Ms. Pacman in the arcade the whole time. When I arrived at Radford, I didn’t have a plan for the future, and for almost two years I was undecided on my major. In the Spring of 2018, I joined the Recreation, Parks and Tourism (RCPT) major on a whim, because my friend was in it and my then girlfriend, now wife, had done something similar and encouraged me to pursue it. Through RCPT I became connected to Radford’s Outdoor Program, and from there it is history. I fell in love with it all, through both RCPT and Outdoor Programs I found a world of community, leadership and adventure. I finally found my place. It was very overwhelming at first. I had no experience, but through my professors and mentors I grew
confidence as a leader. I attribute a lot of my success to my mentor/teacher, Andy Borak, the assistant director of Outdoor Programs at that time. My first big outdoor experience, through Outdoor Programs, that shaped my perspective was a 10day expedition trip to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in upper Minnesota. It was a magical experience for me and one I hoped to share with as many people as I could. I also met my best friend to this day, my canoe partner on a whim, Mikel Mayo-Pitts. Through my RCPT major, I also have very fond memories of my time in a class called Wilderness Institute. It was a summer class that, during the course of 30 days, took the classroom to the trail. We learned about backcountry living skills, leadership philosophy, adventure programming skills and natural interpretation, all while backpacking, canoeing, biking and climbing. After graduating from Radford University, I went on my own journey for a while, but ultimately, I found myself back at my alma mater as the assistant director of the Outdoor Programs I had so cherished. Now I am the one crafting the program and paving the way for the next generation here. It is one of my greatest enjoyments to work with the students who come through this program and share with them the beauty of our backyard. Nothing is better than showing someone the view from the top of McAfee Knob or the bottom of New River Cave for the first time. I love watching the student leaders who come through my program develop as leaders and grow into highly capable and confident individuals. I love my job and I attribute all of it to the experience given to me here at Radford University.

OUTDOOR LIFE LESSONS A Letter to My Son
DEAR RIVER, I’ve been dreading this day since you were born. You’re headed off to college tomorrow. I’m incredibly happy and excited for you. You’re ready to fly. I guess that’s the heartbreaking success we hope for as parents: you don’t need us anymore. And you certainly don’t need any more advice from your old man. But Ma Nature has taught us a lot over the years. Before you go, here are some hard-won lessons we have learned together from our time outdoors. Run your own race. Don’t compare
yourself to others or measure your success by their metrics. Set goals for yourself, find your pace and rhythm, push yourself beyond your comfort zone whenever you can, and find out how fast and how far you can go. Keep taking those leaps. You were the first in our family to stand on the edge of the cliff at Paradise Falls. You felt raw fear in your chest as you stared down into the pool of water 50 feet below. Then your bare feet pushed off the wet granite, and you soared. Take smart risks. Pick the right cliffs. And when the moment
arises to face something new, step boldly into the unknown. Feed the fire. We always have more left in our tank than we realize. It’s usually mental barriers that stop us way before we reach our physical limits. You know this already—you have run triathlons and a marathon, and you endured long lonely slogs in the wild. When your flames start to flicker, your embers still burn, fueled by all of your wounds, grief, fury, and love. Savor the summits. Whether you’ve just climbed a mountain or finished a big project, take a moment
to catch your breath, celebrate your hard work, and soak it all in. The hills keep coming—be sure to cherish the views along the way. Find your line. At the top of each rapid you’ve paddled, you found a smooth seam of water amid the boulders and boat-grabbing holes, and you locked in. But the lines aren’t always clean, and the path forward isn’t always clear. Like Wudy the Wabbit, be nimble, light, quick, and ready to adapt. Your crew is everything. Surround yourself with big-hearted humans

who elevate your soul and make you a better person. They will carry you through the rough patches. Show up for them, too, and you’ll never walk alone. Scout ahead. Peak performances often come from learning the rivers and trails ahead of time. Get to know them like close friends. Scout ahead whenever you can for the pitfalls and possibilities that await. Learn every rock and root in your path. Grace under pressure. When Helene ripped through our farm, you dragged the goats through waist-deep water as our barn was washing away. You were the calm eye of the hurricane—a composure you forged on the pitch, on the mat, on the mound, on the river, and on the trail. Get back up again. I have lost races, crashed my bike, missed penalty
kicks, torn tendons, broken my nose, and been beaten down on the wrestling mat. Everybody fails, but not everyone picks themselves up and keeps bringing it. Don’t stay down for long. Use failure to fuel you. Find a way to get back on your feet and fight even harder. Deeper than the canyons. Wearing tire-tread sandals and loincloths, the indigenous Tarahumara of Mexico’s Copper Canyons can outrun the world’s most elite athletes. What’s their secret? It’s not their genetics, lifestyle, diet, or running form. It’s their mind. When they run, they are radiant. Running is prayer. Each footfall is sacred contact with the divine. They still sweat and suffer like the rest of us, but they tap into a power bigger than the pain. That source of strength is inside each of us if we dig deep enough.

Do the little things. Dream big and chase lofty goals—and then do all the little things to reach them: the workouts when you are tired, the extra study sessions, the quick text to remind someone you care. There will be big moments, but life is mostly little things that prepare you for them.
Keep asking hard questions— including Mary Oliver’s classic, which I still haven’t fully answered myself: “What is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?”
Stay connected to the real world. The real world is the natural world: the air, water, soil, and sky that sustain your blood and breath. Stay close to it. Know the names of trees that you exchange your breath with. Give thanks to the river that you drink from.
Five final words. Chris McCandless ventured solo across the continent by bike and boat. Later, he lived off the land in Alaska. He lived life fully—but had no one to share it with. He died alone in an abandoned school bus, leaving behind these last words scribbled in his journal: “Happiness only real when shared.” I guess that’s enough from me. I hope you ignore all my advice and find your own truths to live by. I love you past the stars. I love you infinity.
Keep looking up. Lying in the backyard, the dogs licking our faces, we’ve seen meteors streak across the sky, the faint smudge of galaxies millions of light years away, and uncountable suns spinning across the vast void. Mystery and wonder whirl around us. Stars shine through the darkness. Light is winning.
Be grateful for every heartbeat. Your life is a firefly’s flash.

HOW TO PLAN AN EPIC ADVENTURE BY G R A H A M AV E R I L L
PEOPLE THINK I’M WISE. IT’S THE white beard. They listen to me and thoughtfully consider the things I say. They shouldn’t. I’m basically a man child who has collected very little wisdom during my five decades on this planet. Ask me about the secret to happiness and I’ll say something like, “low expectations.” I believe most problems can be solved by either going for a run or eating cheap lo-mein. So, I’m not the guy you come to for life advice. But there is one thing I know how to do. I know how to plan an epic adventure. Because of my silly ass job, I have had the opportunity to pursue some amazing adventures all over the country, from trying to ride my bike around a snow-capped volcano to walking for days across a vast desert carrying not much more than a knife and a handkerchief. I’ve slept in caves (multiple times) and worried about where I would find my next meal. I’ve been humbled by weather and mountains and my own lack of cardio. And I’ve learned some things during my tenure. I’ve learned that there is an understated art to planning and executing a big
78
BLUE RIDGE OUTDOORS
ass adventure. It’s not just pointing at a map and declaring you want to go there. I want more people to undertake big, unwieldy missions in the great outdoors, so I’ve gathered the wisdom I’ve collected on the topic over the years and distilled it to seven easy points. Read on and you too can plan and execute something epic in the wild. Author’s note: I like to ride bikes so I’m going to tailor my advice to bikepacking, but I truly believe this advice is universal and can be applied to any endeavor. Just substitute the word “bike” for “kayak” or “donuts.” Really, whatever you’re into. 1.Make it Hard Harder than your rational brain can understand, but not so hard that it will break you spiritually. For safety reasons, you need to keep the terrain within your skill level, but you should push the mileage and effort just beyond what you think is reasonable. If you’re not sure you’ll be able to cover the miles to reach the campsite, then it’s the right amount of miles. 2. Ignore the Weather This is the Southern Appalachians, so of course there’s going to be a
storm at some point on your trip. That’s fine. In fact, that’s ideal. If the weather doesn’t make you feel like you packed the wrong gear, then you’re not on an adventure at all. At some point, you should spend an uncomfortable amount of time trying to shelter from lightning. 3. Invite a Diverse Group of Cohorts Imagine you’re casting a reality show. That’s the sort of array of characters we’re looking for here. You need one hardened veteran who’s seen it all and can hopefully fix everyone’s bike in a pinch. You need a wide-eyed newbie fresh off the farm and new to riding bikes. Preferably he says “golly” while pointing at big rocks and waterfalls. You need a pessimist. This is important. The pessimist will question every decision and suggest you take an Uber to your next campsite, which sounds annoying, but that layer of negativity is key to the group dynamic. The rest of the group will feel compelled to counterbalance his dark energy and be super positive about pushing their bikes up a 20% grade on day three. 4. Don’t Get Married to the Route Yeah, make a plan but don’t be
obsessed with it. If there’s a chance to hit a swimming hole or casino that’s slightly off route, go for it. 5. It’s OK to Lie to Your Friends The friends you’re riding with are going to be inquisitive. They will want to know things like, “How many miles are we riding today?” Or, “Do we have to ride up that mountain?” Only provide vague answers to direct questions, and pepper in phrases throughout the day like, “we’re making great time,” and “looks like that was the worst of the climbing.” It’s especially important to use these phrases if they’re not true. Maintaining high morale is key, even if it’s a false sense of morale. 6. Bring Treats Candy bars are good. Beer is better. 7. Embrace Failure Summiting a mountain is cool. But having to turn back 200 yards from the top because the newbie you brought on your trip can’t stop shivering and keeps talking about leprechauns is even better. Failure makes for great stories. And an epic adventure is all about creating great stories.

FALL FAVORITES Best New Music from the Blue Ridge and Beyond BY JEDD F ERRIS A ND DAVE STAL L AR D
IN EVERY ISSUE, OUR EDITORS curate a playlist of new music, mainly focusing on independent artists from the South. This fall we’re highlighting new tunes from Alabama Shakes, Jim James, and Colby T. Helms.
COLBY T. HELMS “Clouds” Up-and-coming tunesmith Colby T. Helms, who hails from a small town in the Blue Ridge foothills, sings with the soulful grit of Tyler Childers, but he writes lyrics with a folksy endearment reminiscent of the late bluegrass troubadour John Hartford. "Clouds,” the first track to surface from his sophomore record, “One for the Losers,” is an acoustic porch song with a fun, upbeat cadence, but Helms is singing about tough times—when the truck breaks down, the fish won’t bite, and you have your heart set on the wrong girl. – J.F.
ALABAMA SHAKES “I Feel Hope Coming” Right on time, Southern soul explorers Alabama Shakes have reunited to release a new album, “I Must Be Dreaming,” the group’s first since 2015. This record standout has a soothing groove with Brittany Howard flexing her inimitable vocal range as she delivers a much-needed message of hope. – J.F.
BILLY STRINGS “Mill Town Flood” Bluegrass juggernaut Billy Strings blends fiction with fact in the haunting “Mill Town Flood,” the sad tale of Darwin Lyn, a lumberman who finds love before drowning it in the bottle. The second single from his recent release, “So

Much for Goodbyes,” this tale of woe unfolds in Muir, Michigan, the songwriter’s hometown, and features stunning guest work from vocalist Lindsay Lou and guitar wizard Bryan Sutton. – D.S.
J.P. HARRIS “Say Darling Say” Honkytonk troubadour J.P. Harris has spent years traveling the country sharing his vintage take on country music. More recently, Harris has delved deeply into the old time sounds of the Appalachian Mountains, swapping his guitar for an open back banjo on classic Appalachian tunes. “Say Darling Say” has Harris’s rumbling baritone vocals and plucky banjo intertwining with Chance McCoy’s fiddle, giving this Appalachian standard a foreboding feel. – D.S.
RISING APPALACHIA “Chance at Wholesome” There are no harmonies sweeter than those bound by blood. Sisters Chloe Smith and Leah Song, stewards of their folk collective Rising Appalachia, have delighted audiences with heavenly harmonies
rooted in world music, mountain folk, and all sounds in between for two decades. “Chance at Wholesome,” from their new release “Trade My Troubles,” ripples with old time banjo and ethereal vocals, a slow and easy missive about a good love missed. – D.S.
JIM JAMES “Come Again” The My Morning Jacket frontman is back with his first new solo album in eight years. According to James, the new effort, “Wowed Out,” is about pushing back against our phone-addicted culture and being amazed by simple, real things like a walk in the woods. That sentiment is conveyed in the lead single, “Come Again,” a psychedelic pop tune about the alluring pull of embracing reality. – J.F.
DOGWOOD TALES “McMemories” This emerging Virginia band is a fine addition to the thriving indie-
country movement, led by the likes of MJ Lenderman. The group is built around the songwriting chemistry of childhood friends Kyle Grim and Ben Ryan, who both write heartfelt alt-country songs played with a grit influenced by Neil Young and Son Volt. “McMemories,” from the August-released album, “Every Star in Rockingham County,” channels childhood nostalgia through distorted, drawl-hued twang-rock. – J.F.
THE NERSHIS “I Drive Me Crazy Too” For his latest side project, Bill Nershi, longtime leader of jamgrass genre benders The String Cheese Incident, didn’t have to look much farther than his own living room. Joining him in The Nershis are his wife, Jillian, and their daughter, Lauren. “I Drive Me Crazy” is a country-tinged two stepper, with the band being joined by Andy Hall and Jeremy Garrett of the Infamous Stringdusters and Jason Hann and Keith Moseley, Nershi’s mates in SCI. – D.S.
